Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 322 notes)

Tasted by Jhalpern27 on 4/2/2024 & rated 90 points: This was second bottle of these I’ve had, served tonite in a flight of 05,06,14,18,19,20. The 06 and 05 were so similiar however the 05 was slightly better on the finish and gave it a slight more edge in the head to head. (1505 views)
Tasted by Duncan H on 3/31/2024 & rated 93 points: Excellent - better than the previous time we drank a bottle. Smooth and well balanced (fruit and tannins) - tasted against La Lagune 2006 and this one was fuller and more balanced (335 views)
Tasted by La Grappe on 2/24/2024 & rated 93 points: Decanted for 5 hours. The colour is still youthful, with a touch of purple; with air, the wine opens up to provide, elegant, creamy, blackcurrant fruit, quite intense and with good length. Can be drunk now but is probably 5 to 10 years from its peak. (2069 views)
Tasted by KeyMaster on 2/24/2024 & rated 92 points: Decanté et carrafé pour 3 heures. Vraiment superbe! (2099 views)
Tasted by pgm on 2/4/2024 & rated 93 points: Seems at the beginning of maturity, with fresh notes of currant and blackberry, tertiary notes of loamy earth, and tannins that give the finish persistence. Definitely a long life ahead. (2992 views)
Tasted by Duncan H on 1/6/2024 & rated 89 points: Still dark red and very cabernet nose (even slightly new world) but lacking a bit of flesh on the taste - a bit underwhelming and quiet. Relatively austere - dry tannins (3291 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 12/31/2023 & rated 93 points: Opened, but did not decant, 1 hour before dinner (grilled Filet Mignon for Christmas Eve dinner). Dark red/black with a clear meniscus. On nose, pencil lead, sweet tobacco, blackberry and cedar notes. On palate, medium body, medium+ acidity, medium+ tannins and a long, persistent finish. This has aged beautifully. 93-94 range. (2640 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 12/29/2023 & rated 93 points: Drinking well now at its optimal drinking window. Still can improve. with proper storage. Pronounced nose intensity with notes of cassis, vanilla, black fruits, toast, spices. Medium+ acidity and medium tannin. (2596 views)
Tasted by Carson.McEvoy on 12/29/2023 & rated 92 points: A classic St. Julien, it impressed as a pop-and-pour option. Displaying the expected elegance of Léoville Barton, it featured soft, ripe fruit, cedar cigar box, and subtle hints of spice. Although I didn't delve into detailed notes, the wine was consistently enjoyable from start to finish. (2368 views)
Tasted by DFBW on 12/25/2023 & rated 94 points: Christmas day red along with a 2005 Rioja Alta GR and 2007 Il Poggione Riserva Brunello and this came out on top. Drinking pretty perfectly for me and right in it's prime with the deep layers of soft dark fruit sitting very nicely alongside perfectly resolved tannins. A very soft and silky wine without any excessive hints of sharpness, oak or leather. Very balanced. No signs of too much age so it has the legs to last a fair bit longer I'm sure but for my palate, it's right there for me now. (2129 views)
Tasted by La Grappe on 11/18/2023 & rated 90 points: This was decanted for 3 hours. More would have helped. The wine is still quite young, and not fully developed, but it has attractive blackcurrant fruit, some savouriness, plus some unresolved tannin making it somewhat subdued. Needs a few more years to be at its best, but is nevertheless good now. (2224 views)
Tasted by stamperb on 11/15/2023 & rated 94 points: Nose: Dark cassis and sweet figs, floral honey, crisp autumn leaves, wet soil, really incredible. Palate: Barely ripe blackberries, beautiful fruit with no trace of oxidation; fine grained tannins. (2584 views)
87 pts (2561 views)
Tasted by Matt T on 10/22/2023 & rated 93 points: This is in a great spot. Tannins have integrated and this is a lush, hedonistic St. Julien. Good acid and complexity on a medium to long finish. (2389 views)
Tasted by M. Schmid on 10/14/2023 & rated 92 points: Nach 2h dekantieren öffnete sich der Wein erst. Warten bis Ende 2024 mit der nächsten Flasche (2412 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 10/9/2023 & rated 91 points: Tough act to follow on after 2000 Léoville Poyferré. More angular in comparison, grippy, cooler in terms of fruit profile. Very classic claret as one might expect with good depth and length. No rush drinking up, but unlikely going to improve significantly. 90-92 (2844 views)
Tasted by Swintonblade on 9/17/2023 & rated 92 points: Opened up lovely after 2 hours. Still young with blackberry fruit, soft tannins and long length. (2599 views)
Tasted by SaltWine on 9/11/2023: Young, not quite ready (2668 views)
Tasted by Argrath on 8/26/2023 & rated 95 points: So classic left bank nose! Full, rich, elegant. Cedar, black currant, ink and sweet tobacco in perfect harmony. Pure, clean! Lovely.
Medium-fullish, fullish palate. Perfectly balanced. Pencil shavings, classic. Lovely, cool black fruit. Long and elegant. A joy to drink.
Based on this bottle, this is ready to go, and can be enjoyed at least 10 more years. (2069 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 7/8/2023 & rated 94 points: Bert's pension party part 2; Bordeaux (@ BV): In the bouquet beautiful rustic impressions, dark berries and some chocolate. On the palate cassis and other dark berries, beautiful acidity and still firm, but round tannin with a good bite. Beautiful and classical wine with still a good future. (3657 views)
Tasted by chatters on 6/30/2023: Coravin fun - Bordeaux (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Biscuit, toast, a little cream, touch of red hued fruit with earth, savoury blackcurrant and plum, cedar, bramble and very slight pyrazine and earth. A little savoury and slightly austere in the palate with dark fruits, cedar, slight leather backed by floury textured tannins that persists. All travels long. Nice. (3443 views)
Tasted by La Grappe on 6/24/2023 & rated 92 points: Decanted for 5 hours, which helped to open it up. It has ripe, concentrated blackcurrant fruit and a full, thick texture, with good length. The tannin is softening, but it will continue to develop over the next 10 years or so. Fine. (2990 views)
Tasted by signotim on 4/15/2023 & rated 93 points: From a half bottle. Drinking very well now and should improve with more time. (4208 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 4/12/2023 & rated 94 points: Drinking well now already with notes of black fruits, toast, spices, leather and vanilla. Pronounced nose intensity. Medium+ acidity and high tannin. Long finish. (4425 views)
Tasted by lozatron on 3/30/2023: Glancing past the wine cupboard and this jumped out and mugged me. On the nose, some pencil lead, a bit more fruit than I'd expect - plum and damson perhaps, and just a lick of cigar box. On the palate - proper, proper claret but with just a slight flamboyant oak note. By no means in the same class, but reminded me of the 96 Mouton - a rich oak note that seems incongruous at first, but when it sits there and refuses to look uncomfortable everyone realises it was meant to be there all along. (3721 views)
Tasted by La Grappe on 3/25/2023 & rated 92 points: A 2+ hour decant helps to open this up; it has ripe, elegant fruit, perhaps a little understated at this stage; quite savoury and with some tannin yet to be resolved. A fine wine now, with perhaps more to give over the next 5 years or so. (3438 views)
Tasted by Woodford on 3/11/2023 & rated 91 points: At the open:
Smells of graphite, spice, star anise, and a hidden bit of concentrated cassis
Tastes of a little green, lean modest red fruit.

After 1 hour (decanted)
Smells of concentrated dark fruit with a touch of raisin and forest floor.
Tastes of still present but fading green fruit balancing with a light back fruit with convincing minerality and leather.

After 2 hours (decanted)
Smells of light sweet black fruit and leather (a touch of smoke?)
Tastes of Modest, confident red fruit. Restrained and classic.

Medium bodied

This wine improved over three hours but stayed true to its classic nature. A “correct” claret. Enjoyable and traditional, but not overly impressive. (3816 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 3/5/2023 & rated 93 points: Académie des Cinquante Tasting and Dinner with the Académie du Vin de Bordeaux (Restaurant Entrepot, Amsterdam, NL): Walkaround tasting, brief note. Sturdier tannins than the 2005 at the moment, good fruit and lovely precision. (3901 views)
Tasted by Jake Barnes on 2/25/2023 & rated 91 points: Youngish and thoroughly dark with just the beginnings of some tertiary characteristics on the nose. The wine showed a good amount of black fruit (blackberry and some cassis) and was cool and minty, but everything was blocked on the finish by the stout tannins. Very good general balance. Better on the nose than the palate. This was in its early maturity phase.

This was my only bottle, and at about $120 US per bottle I won’t be buying anymore. It’s a nice enough wine, but at the end of the day, it’s only above average in quality. If you bought this en primeur you did very, very well. At about $29 per bottle it’s a fantastic wine. If I had a case, I’d be drinking at least one a year now. 12.5% ABV (very good; above average/***/16/91) (3440 views)
Tasted by chefdilletante on 2/11/2023: Decanted. Black currant and blueberry predominate. Tannins large resolved; what’s left is fine grained. In the drinking window but suspect that some more time will loosen things up and increase complexity. (3089 views)
Tasted by Cmca1 on 1/26/2023 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 2h prior to drinking, however tasted at opening and improved with decanting and air.

Paired with roast lamb and all the trimmings.

Colour: deep red-purple
Nose: immediate cassis, violets, green bell pepper/capsicum with tobacco and earthen undernotes
Palate: wonderful cassis and black cherry with green pepper edge and pepper. Cream and vanilla still evident. Savoury and earthen notes throughout make this a wonderful pairing with the roast lamb.
Length was medium as was the depth.

A great food wine, however I feel it was let down by the vintage with its depth and power (3885 views)
Tasted by Geniesser64 on 1/1/2023 & rated 94 points: Solider Bordeaux, tipp topp. (3878 views)
Tasted by JCR50 on 12/10/2022 & rated 90 points: Dark fruit, multiple layers with a slight leather on the nose. Had the entire bottle from a Coravin over a 10 day period. Lasted surprisingly well. (4051 views)
Tasted by Julian Marshall on 11/28/2022 & rated 93 points: One of the better 06s I have tried so far, this has a nice blend of classic LB Christmas cake aromas and tastes, lightened by the rather more creamy, elegant notes that I think they started with the 2004. For now, it's a little more narrowly focused than the 04 but with probably more underlying power. I did decant but not for long enough, this needs a good three hours or more to open up. (4298 views)
Tasted by La Grappe on 11/27/2022 & rated 92 points: Decanted an hour ahead and then poured into a jug before serving. A fine claret, still in its infancy although very enjoyable with food. It has elegant blackcurrant fruit with a slightly savoury character. Still rather closed on the finish and perhaps needing several more years to open out fully. (3879 views)
Tasted by Bob in NC on 11/16/2022 & rated 92 points: Drinking excellent with many great years ahead. Excellent nose, very smooth with nice layers of flavor with a tasty finish that have light plus tannins. Dark dried cherry and raisiny fruit, nice barrel presence with vanilla flavor, black pepper and a hint of leather. This wine went great with our game meats. (4009 views)
Tasted by Sun_Ship on 11/15/2022 & rated 91 points: Showing some signs of age, but still youthful with plenty of tannic grip - a focused core of dark cassis, enveloped by crushed rocks, tobacco and sweet floral and chocolate hints. Day 2 and 3 revealed some further complexity, with silkier tannins, cedar and wood, vanilla, pencil shavings and savoury notes on the finish. Classic in style, with a good few more years before this hits its prime. Decanted 2 hours. (3620 views)
Tasted by HOS on 10/21/2022 & rated 94 points: Decanted 1/2 hour from a six pack purchased on release. Nose of black cherry, leather, mushroom. Tastes of currant, pepper with roasted herbs and floral notes. Medium bodied , long grippy finish. Still young. (3554 views)
Tasted by Juliansi on 10/3/2022 & rated 89 points: Impressively, at 16 years old, this 2006 vintage still displays youth in both its colour as well as nose and palate!

Nose was a cherry bouquet with hints of graphite coming through too. There were blackcurrant, chocolate and vanilla on the palate. And the medium-long finish had cherries and plums too.

Tannins were not as rounded as its peers in the vertical, and presented themself as rather dusty. Overall this felt thinner compared to the 2005 and 2008/09/10.

LB 2005-2010 vertical, rank (of 6): 5th placed.
In terms of its ideal drinking window, this 2006 is in a good place now, and I would reckon to drink-up.
6 of us shared the purchase of this LB ex-chateau vertical box, the provenance was simply wonderful!

History and the family of Leoville Barton:
Tradition has always remained important at Leoville Barton. When Ronald Barton took over managing the Left Bank estate, he did not believe in any modern winemaking technology. I wonder what he’d think of winemaking in Bordeaux for many estates today?

Following Ronald Barton, Anthony Barton took over the estate back in 1983. He modernised the facility, despite the focus on tradition, and it was Anthony Barton who upgraded the cellars, whilst keeping the large traditional oak fermentation vats.

At a ripe old age of 91, Anthony Barton passed away recently in Jan 2022, and Lilian Barton Satrorius is presently in charge of the estate. Her 2 children, Damien Sartorius and Melaine Sartorius who are 10th generation Bordeaux wine makers, are gradually stepping forward into this prominent role.

Tasted by dagij on 9/29/2022 & rated 92 points: Deep ruby to black core, a hint of mahogany at the rim. Still youthful. The nose is pure definition of west side Bdx in the first phase of the secondary phase (!): an earthy tone consisting of warm earth, bricks and steel (pencil led) dominates, underneath there s a fine fruity core of cherries and blackcurrant. All is framed by tones of upbringing: coffee, some vanilla, and a hint of dark chocolate. Medium bodied attack, fine and smooth tannins up front. The fruit is surprisingly light and "red" most reminiscent of cherries, but with a sweet underlying tone of plums and blackcurrant. Wonderful balance. The aftertaste is long, fresh, framed by a n elegant dryness. The wine as a whole gives an elegant impression. Not a heavyweight, but still persistent and serious. This is probably starting to peak now and is a treat for those of us loving aged Bdx. Will still keep for a decade, and will start a slow decline into the early 2040s. Elegance defined. (3523 views)
Tasted by Duncan H on 9/18/2022 & rated 92 points: Showed surprisingly well, but still a bit austere towards the end of the palate. Some lovely crunchy blackcurrant and lead pencil. Needs time, but still enjoyable now. (3487 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 7/1/2022 & rated 93 points: Very primary still with dark fruit and oak spices. Opened up slowly in the glass but clearly this is not ready to drink. I like the mouthfeel, lush with polished tannins. Wait till 2026 before drinking this. (5352 views)
Tasted by j30 on 6/19/2022 & rated 92 points: The wine has grown denser than I remembered it from several years ago. The wine is still young with some secondary notes emerging. Unfortunately I didn't air the wine long enough to see it fully blossom, but the wine was already open and very enjoyable with dinner. The only thing keeping it from a higher score is the modestly astringent aftertaste which may be a feature of the vintage? Nevertheless the wine is not fully mature yet so there is still room for improvement. (4313 views)
Tasted by tphilca on 5/7/2022 & rated 92 points: This impressed me for a '06. Medium body, medium intensity and quite subtle when opened. After a few hours, it really opened up with some complexity with some tobacco and cool black fruits. I could not perceive any oak influence which surprised me. Not fully mature in my opinion. No rush on this. Not a monster but certainly something you would be happy to serve for guests. (4431 views)
Tasted by La Grappe on 4/16/2022 & rated 92 points: Decanted for 5 hours plus, which helped it open out a bit so that it could be drunk with food. It has ripe, still youthful blackcurrant fruit and a slightly smoky, gravelly finish. Classic, slightly austere claret. Still some years short of full maturity (5 or 10), but can be drunk now. (4525 views)
Tasted by chatters on 3/11/2022: Coravin fun - Leoville Barton; 3/8/2022-3/15/2022 (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. A little biscuit, smells a little dilute, brambles, a touch of forest floor, quite 'claret' for me, cigar box, graphite, spice, slight leather. Medium plus intensity acidity, juicy, dark hued fruit is fleshy, tannins are savoury, drying and emery paper raspy. There is a hard and possibly slight green quality here as well that lends complexity rather than upsets. very long. Nice. (5552 views)
Tasted by Caudalix on 2/22/2022 & rated 90 points: Bouchon en bon état. (4726 views)
Tasted by dleigh on 1/23/2022 & rated 92 points: Delicious; drinking well currently. (5141 views)
Tasted by jkoenen on 1/5/2022 & rated 93 points: 2 hrs in the decanter.
Coolish and classic nose. Kinda smooth.
On the palate sturdy tannines! Lots of minerality, yet very soft acidity. Black fruit, cloves, coffee, smoke, leather and graphite.
Give these bottles a few more years in the cellar to smoothen out the tannines. Potential plus. (4883 views)
Tasted by olebaer on 12/31/2021 & rated 95 points: From memory: decanted for one hour (will do 4 next time). pairing with Dave‘s famous pot roast from the Tajine worked well.
never had a wine with such an intense freshly cut bourbon-vanilla flavor on the nose. almost too much in the beginning. but along with the dark berries of black currant, plum, blackberries and a hint of white pepper it appeared very approachable already. acidity and alcohol were balanced, although I can’t believe the value of 12.5% is true.
the very high tannins were less aggressive than expected and will make the wine last over several decades. glad I bought a few cases even if I get it cheaper today than subscribed. (4929 views)
Tasted by sfern on 12/21/2021 & rated 94 points: showed great! purchased at K&L in 2012 as a late release. drank alongside a 2012 Saffreddi Maremma Toscana. Expressive nose, cocoa on the mid-weight palet, and spice and licorice on the finish. Paired great with a blue cheese burger -yum! (4612 views)
Tasted by VinhoVerde on 11/13/2021: Too Young and closed for a numerical score. Like the 2006 Pichon LaIande I tasted before it, the mid-palate seems lacking. Tannic finish. Needs 5+ years of additional aging. (4785 views)
Tasted by kcsteve on 11/5/2021: Last of 3 bottles. Wow, this was not good. Stored in controlled cellar since purchase. No aroma, no fruit, some tartness and minerals. Really disappointed as the other bottles were very good. Bottle variation? (4635 views)
Tasted by dagij on 11/5/2021 & rated 93 points: Deep ruby, almost black core. Classic blackcurrant fruit with hints of coffee and vanilla, with a clear tone of iron and stone/pencil. Very intriguing. Sweet fruit attack, lots of blackcurrant, very fine acidity, polished tannins, mineral tones on the finish. The aftertaste is long, fresh, almost a bit tart. A bit unbalanced in the mouth, but the aftertaste is long and fruity. All on primary fruit at the moment. A young version, fruity, minerally. This is going to be great. 92-94 (4405 views)
Tasted by VDLT Wine on 10/28/2021: A really fine, young Saint Julien. Tannic and structured but the fruit is energized and delicious. Very classical and seems poised to be terrific. (4603 views)
Tasted by Mhbeaune on 10/9/2021 & rated 90 points: Served with Pork tenderloin with morel sauce. Open 4 hours with a one hour decant. My devious TN was spot on. A typical of Barton not from a great year. Already lacking a bit of fruit in the mouth (4477 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 9/27/2021 & rated 92 points: 2006 Bordeaux Horizontal: The Léoville Barton is one of the successes of the left bank in 2006. It would be difficult to confuse this for a very good vintage of Léoville Barton, but on the strength of the purity of its fruit, the classically clean cedar it displays, and its persistence on the finish (without devastating tannin) there is something to be valued here. (5672 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 9/16/2021 & rated 93 points: VinoLaprisco Tasting (Restaurant Fifth, Eindhoven, NL): A blend of 78% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, 60% new oak. When I double decanted the wine in the afternoon, it filled the kitchen with marvellously pure Cabernet aromas, and when we tasted it in the evening six hours later, it delivered a well-developed, classical Saint-Julien profile, elegant in a masculine way, with the tannic grip and balance for a long life. Drink now – 2045. (4770 views)
Tasted by wineforth on 7/9/2021 & rated 93 points: Excellent note below from Putelgen! Strawberry, cassis and cedar nose. Sandalwood, rosemary and blackcurrant on the palate. Whilst fully ready to drink the fruit is a little light for the tannins and there's always the hope that they will come into balance with more time. Lovely long flavoursome finish. Trying the 'eto' wine preserver and decanter for the 1st time. (5008 views)
Tasted by Puteljen! on 7/3/2021 & rated 93 points: Decanted for 2 hours. Lovely nose of dark cherries, strawberries and cassis. Some brambles and bay leaf mixed with cedar, tobacco and rosemary. On the palate quite plush with good fruit. Tannins are beginning to soften. Earthy minerality, medium acids. Good lenght as well. Still on the young side but drinking well. (4691 views)

Tasted by Papies on 4/14/2021 & rated 92 points: Young still but definitely St Juliens of 2006 are not but wines to have in hand and ready. Not as charming to drink now are the 2007s but these will outlast the 2007s and especially the juicier St Juliens will be very charming with a bit more age. Still quite firm and on the fruit and definitely decanting is a must at this stage. A very solid wine and a great 92 for now (5968 views)

Purplish plummy and cherry fruits, inky. Smoke and bell peppers. Dried leaves. White spices too. Great elegance.

Good minerality, just the right level of acidity. Silky tannins.

Less fruits on palate. Good to enjoy now. 94 points. (4926 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 3/7/2021 & rated 95 points: Decanted 6 hours, classic Bordeaux in a classic year at a classic age; lovely; quite dark purplish red; fruity nose, dark berries; rounded, cedar, light tannins, sweet but slightly dry in the aftertaste; really tasty (4557 views)
Tasted by premiercruclasse on 3/4/2021 & rated 93 points: Yum very savory and elegant. Open nose right upon pouring. Still has fine tannins and grip.  Tasted by chatters on 12/21/2020: Coravin fun - Leoville Barton and new arrivals (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Brambles, blackcurrant, a very slightly jubey black fruit note along with toast, sweet spices, cedar, caramel and a little pencil shavings. Quite liquorice on the palate, wetly soft, quite savoury, tannins are drying chalky and pull at the palate. It's a little dilute. Hmm. (4469 views)

Tasted by dagij on 9/27/2020 & rated 92 points: Classic Bdx from a classic vintage. The colour is still very, almost shockingly, young: deep purple at the core with only a slightest hint of amber at the rim. Fresh nose with lots of blackcurrant and blackberries, a hint of eucalyptus/mint, tobacco and a tone of iron/minerals. Complex. Medium to full bodied attack, very fine tannins, almost silky mouthfeel. Black berries fruit all the way from the first attack to the long and fresh finish. The aftertaste is almost reminiscent of citrus with its high acidity, but also with nice tones of tobacco and vanilla complementing the fresh fruit. Still in its adolescence. Drink now with food (beef, lamb and the likes), or keep for five more years. This will be drinkable for the next two decades. However, do not expect a fruity wine. This is classic, dry Bdx. Complex and really impressive after long decant , requires patience give it time in the glass or in the cellar. Nose is full on developed with classic cabernet dominated St Julien markers, but also more opulent dark chocolate and some spice box. Quite generous in fact. On the palate there is much structure left to be resolved, and it is more strict. Drinking really well with grilled meat right now but there is a long term race going on between the fruit and the structure. If they find a harmonious truce it will be truly great.  Tasted by ovenmitt on 3/4/2019 & rated 90 points: This took about two hours to open up, pretty much showing nothing on the palate or nose in the beginning. Once open, it went from a medium dark fruit, (casis?) to a lighter cherry with some cedar and menthol notes. The wine never showed exceptional complexity, but was nicely balanced and enjoyable. There was quite a bit of sediment and I wonder if it's in a dumb phase or if it needs to be drunk up now. Drank with peanut noodle pork loin. (6699 views)

Tasted by englishman's claret on 11/12/2018: Tasted blind. Clearly cabernet dominated, bell pepper, chocolate from the oak. Quite oaky on the palate. Felt about 13.5%ish, though not sure if that's accurate. Definitely Medoc; guessed 2003 Calon Segur. I put this around 88ish but a recent bottle followed over a longer trajectory showed better - I think that's the more accurate representation of the wine in general. Easy to get these young wines when they're buttoned up or have had too much air; you need to sit with them a long time to access that window into what they really are. (6598 views)

Fuller on entry than the DdC and with more tension and energy. Savoury, graphite with blackberries, gravelly full tannins exert themselves on the midpalate, medium-plus bodied, good length. Palate: Elegant and balanced with red fruited notes, cassis, decent richness and a medium length finish. Super well made with none of the big tannins or leanness that many here comment about (thankfully).  Tasted by Helenachuck on 2/21/2018 & rated 88 points: Leoville Barton has stayed true to their roots and their style, making traditional wines in a leaner style. This wine is no exception, and lacks some ripeness that would help carry the more nuanced elements the wine offers. A medium ruby red color, red rim, very clear. Nose is meaty, earthy, has wood elements, graphite, some bottle age, lean. The palate is also lean. It is tight Cabernet fruit, graphite, chalk, some complexity. It is good but lacks generosity or purity of fruit. The finish is lean but correct. Even with food this wine wants for more. (6402 views)
Tasted by dagij on 1/14/2018 & rated 88 points: Decanted one hour before service, almost no sediments. Deep ruby colour with an almost black core, few signs of this wine being more than ten years old. Quite closed on the nose, not giving much before after almost two hours in decanter and glass. Still, there are hints of blackcurrant, blueberries and some fresher, more red berries (lingonberries?), combined with tones of warm earth and tobacco. Smooth attack, medium bodied with a tasting curve that expands through the mouth. Dark berries dominates first, then the acidity hits in giving a very fresh, almost tart impression, while the aftertaste is dominated by dark berries and tannins. Concentrated and long. This is perhaps what someone would call a "classic" west-side Bordeaux. In a year like 2006 when it was difficult to get ripe grapes, the traditional style of Leoville Barton seems a bit austere to me. I will let my remaining bottles rest in the cellar for at least five more years in hope of the wine opening up and becoming more inviting to drink. On a final note; this really shows how reliable Cabernet-based, classified Bordeaux is. Just don't buy new vintages if you're over 60! (6648 views)

Tasted by Burgundy Al on 2/3/2016 & rated 89 points: Flickinger Customer Appreciation Tasting (Casino Club - Chicago IL): Tasting, brief note. Very good depth and concentration, but I didn't particularly like the assertive tannins and the corresponding balance.  Tasted by Omar Khayyam on 9/6/2015: Bordeaux 2014 en primeur with Winefinder (Munchenbryggeriet, Stockholm): I liked this a lot, the nose is classic claret, the body is elegant with good freshness, sandpaper soft tannins that nevertheless provide quite some grip, very very fine. Should keep it still though. I had a second sample at the end of the showing and felt it was not as great but by then the room was much warmer, and it felt like the last bottle had as well so not sure I should take this into account. recommended. which is a relief since I have quite a lot of these classic bottles in the cellar... Overall cool vintage profile, in classic Left Bank style.
Nose with barnyard and stable, gravel, fine spicy herbs, cedar wood, touch leather and some dark cherries.
Palate is younger than the nose, with medium + tannins, fine fruit, good grip, acidity and a long finish.
Quite clean and fresh, with fine transparency.
Missing some of the very charming ripe fruit found in the 2014.
I would hold on to any bottles for another 5 years, at least, and see what happens, since this is still undeveloped and not fully unleashed.

After two days in the open bottle and decant for another hour the remaining half bottle, everything quite balanced.  Tasted by rikipedia on 12/1/2014 & rated 90 points: Terroir-istes International - France, Bordeaux, Léoville Barton (Rodwell House): Mid to deep crimson, the nose shows more tertiary fruits with tree bark, dried herbs, black fruits, a touch of chocolate and a hint of spice. A cooler entry with chalky powderiness and gravelly tannins that is chewy in a more classic Bordeaux mould.
Reasonably complex, some nice bottle development shows that herbal, brambly core, although the acid is quite tart. Upright with good concentration, this feels a more traditional house from a lesser vintage but is still well put together. Good length. (2570 views)

Tasted by Purple Tooth on 3/16/2014 & rated 93 points: This wine is still way too young, way young…Shows huge tannins and yet the big fruit stuffing still makes a big statement. The fruit is huge and the wine is just starting to make the transformation into Bordeaux and has all the elements to mature into a great St. Julien.  Tasted by acyso on 9/14/2012 & rated 90 points: Textbook bordelais nose, with a hint of leather and menthol. Muted fruit. On the palate, this is rather light for a young Bordeaux, with a lot of acidity balancing out the more savory flavours. There are also some earthy tones on the palate. The fruit again is muted on the palate as well, and the bottle needs plenty of air for it to come around. Somewhat coarse tannins. Decanting is a must. The opposite of a fruit bomb, this is a good cerebral bottle of drinking Bordeaux. (13235 views)
Tasted by pjaines on 8/13/2012: Surprisingly muted and medium bodied. These Leoville Bartons usually need years and years to come round, but the 2006 is already approachable, if a little mute and dumb. Medium palate - fairly closed down at the moment but lacks and real depth. Surprising, as these wines are tremendous usually. Reserving judgement for now. (13334 views)
Tasted by PSPatrick on 6/10/2012 & rated 90 points: Not exactly my luckiest Léoville Barton week. The 1997 I had a week ago was past peak, the 2003 I popped a few days ago was corked, and this 2006 was pretty tight. From a half-bottle. The wine was bright medium purple in colour. It offered nice floral notes, red berries, vanilla and cinnamon on the rather tight nose. On the palate the elegant, medium-bodied wine showed red and dark berries, pencil shaving, vanilla and cinnamon, with good acidity and fine, round tannins.

The wine started off floral and red fruits-driven right after popping the cork and I liked it quite a bit. It did, however, close down after a few minutes in the decanter and did not open-up again over the next five hours. This 2006 Léoville Barton might actually become superb in a few years, but currently requires another five years of patience. (13241 views)

Nose was uncharacteristically sweet, with maraschino cherries riding on a bed of earth, tobacco and smoke. There was some characteristic depth there though. Palate was well balanced, with good fruit in the form of clean cassis flavours with some stemmy tannins in the background. Just lacked some oomph somehow. overall: not backwards like most normal young leoville bartons, but this certainly does have a way to go. Lots of potential and could make a great compliment to the 05 20 years down the road. There is a real good richness to this with a good purity at the same time. A complete beast of a wine at this time though (14099 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 5/12/2009: Robert Chadderdon Selections (Denver, CO): Simply gorgeous. This is a BIG wine in an elegant, very well-structured kind of way. Nothing overdone or out of proportion. Classic St. Julien tannins with brooding depth and complexity. I bought a mag and a few bottles on futures (which haven't shown up yet) and I'll be sure not to open any of them for at least 10 years; this is going to be something else. If you do open one early, be sure to give it a long decant and spend some time with it, the integration is marvelous. Approx $65, drink thru 2035 (17900 views)

Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 1/18/2009 & rated 92 points: K&L Fete de Bordeaux (One Market Restaurant, San Francisco, CA): Opaque dark red violet color; lovely black berry, berry, black fruit poised nose; tasty, soft black fruit and blackberry palate with firm, sweet tannins; medium finish (drinking nicely now, but will clearly be even better in a few years) (9501 views)
Tasted by Oh Dae-su on 1/15/2009 & rated 94 points: Had this together with other four Medoc (Chateaux: Tour Haut-Chaussan, Bel-Air Marquis
d’Aligre, Segur de Cabanac, Moulin de la Rose and Léoville-Barton) wines.

(Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc - mostly new oak and some used)

It is hard to write something useful about this wine. Certainly it is by far too young, but hints
of its potential are already very present. It shows fragrances of dark cherries, light red fruits
and oak. The taste is now dominated by very fresh and intense cherry flavours and by its not
too strong tannins. Length and potential are absolutely great, although totally different to the
2005er. Next try in 5 years. (12780 views)
Tasted by aof on 10/19/2008 & rated 91 points: La Fete du Bordeaux- 2006 Bordeaux Vintage (Chicago Wine Company, Ritz-Calton.): Complex nose of earth, tar, chocolate and dark berries. Primary on the palate. Reasonable balance. This should evolve nicely. (13072 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Julien

VdB

Read more detailed information on St. Julien and its wines The seventeenth century pioneers Traces are to be found of a Saint-Julien de Rintrac, perhaps Saint-Julien's earliest name, as from the thirteenth century. But we have to wait until the seventeenth century pioneers, urban and rural aristocrats, discover the exceptional merits of these terroirs.
Traces of this system still exist today in the structure of estates within the appellation: by the side of the two villages of Beychevelle and Saint-Julien, the large estates are heavily preponderant, representing more than four fifths of the total surface of vineyards.

The terrain is practically identical over all the commune. Only the proximity of the estuary, sometimes close, sometimes further away, can cause slight variations in climate. In fact, Saint-Julien-Beychevelle's layer of gravel takes the form of a huge rectangle over 3 miles long and 2 miles wide. And the alluvial deposits are particularly well fragmented into ridges of Garonne gravel of the early Quaternary. Accordingly, the vines are safeguarded from stagnant water.

The wines from the Saint-Julien appellation may be recognized by their unparalleled bouquet, particularly harmonious and mild. They have a fine deep colour and combine the finesse of their aromas and a solid constitution. They have body, are very rich in flavour and have a delicious and delicate bouquet.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)
In order to have the right to the Saint-Julien appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:

- come from the commune of Saint-Julien and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cussac, and Saint-Laurent, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions: grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
