Tasted by MC2 Wines on 12/22/2023: 1953 Dinner: Milestone Birthday (Gemma Fish + Oyster): We’ve returned to the ‘young-uns’ by which I mean I was alive when the wine was made although of course this has lots of great age as well. It’s a wonderful bottle. Drinking great and really intriguing. HB is one of my favorite of the first growths and this shows why that would be. The only nit picking is maybe a touch too young which you realize especially after the older wine. (1326 views)
Tasted by Richard Nabavi on 11/24/2023 & rated 94 points: Decanted a couple of hours before dinner. The cork was in very good condition and came out whole, but there was some seepage up it which hadn't yet reached the top.

Very good colour, with just a little light browning on the edges. Superb bouquet with complex notes of blue fruit, tar and sandalwood. Quite fresh on the palate, very elegant and well-balanced, and with a lovely long aftertaste. Fully mature.

It could perhaps have done with a little more concentration on the mid-palate, but this was jolly good stuff! (1132 views)
Tasted by Francophile1 on 11/19/2023 & rated 95 points: Thanksgiving Mondo Dinner 2023 (Atlanta, GA): Tasted double blind. Very similar to wine #1.  Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/5/2023 & rated 97 points: So, this is what a cigar smoking lounge smells like on a night when everyone seems to be enjoying their favorite Cuban cigar. Add to that, cherry pipe tobacco, burning leaves, currants, blackberries, leather, tar and scorched earth and you get an idea of the perfume, The palate is loaded with elegant, silky, fresh, spicy, sweet red fruits with a delicate edge. This was a very good bottle, though, I’ve had even better examples, as this wine can be majestic. Drink from 2023-2042. (2943 views)

Tasted by LTTC on 6/19/2023: (SYP) Blind tasting. Small glass. I guessed 1982 La Mission Haut Brion.
The nose is beautiful with notes of dark plum, tobacco leaf and ocean air. The tannins are silky and the concentration is remarkable, which leads me to the conclusion that this is from one of the best vintages in the 80s. 94 (1765 views)

Tasted by acyso on 5/18/2023 & rated 95 points: Some Bordeaux (Chicago, IL): A few years ago, I preferred the 82 LMHB to this in the same side-by-side. Unfortunately today, the LMHB was oxidized. In any case, this was my favourite of the 1982 flight. Red fruited and relatively light, with classic Haut-Brion minerality with a lifted quality that I really liked. (2298 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 5/18/2023 & rated 93 points: Top Mid-Aged Bordeaux ("Chateau La Grange" - La Grange IL): In 1982 flight. This took a while to strut its stuff, with more and more forthcoming over time as the wine's sturdiness softened. Black fruits throughout with some meatiness and a distinct minerally character. Very good. Sadly the Mission in this same flight was not good. (2201 views)

Tasted this at Mark’s yearly Bordeaux tasting. Sampled 12 vintages each of Château Haut Brion and Château Margaux. Great wines and comradeship, what an exceptional event to be part of!

Tasted by Eric on 3/18/2023: Haut-Brion and Margaux courtesy of Mark Taylor; 3/18/2023-3/19/2023 (Atlanta, GA): Lighter color, fabulously complex, horse, roasted earth, tobacco, coffee, the quintessential Haut Brion nose. Saddle leather and brett, too much for some but absolutely right in my wheelhouse. So pretty, light, ethereal, racy, delicate, exploding with inner mouth perfume. It was obviously the 1982.

My #1 and the group #3. Guessed correctly as 1982. (2171 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 3/17/2023 & rated 95 points: Another great wine dinner with Bernard Burtschy (Taberna del Alabardero, Washington D.C.): Fully mature nose displaying warm red fruit with a hint of black, strawberry jam, cherry, plum, a hint of crème de cassis, leather, tobacco, ash, sweet spices, leather and earth. There is a hint of Brett that is not terribly bothersome. Fully integrated palate, nicely layered mature red, warm, fluid and soft, bright acidity, medium mineral, and a long sweet red fruit driven finish. This is a perfectly mature example. (1752 views)
Tasted by N.Bonaparte on 1/27/2023 & rated 95 points: This needed a couple hours in the glass to open up. A perfectly stored bottle revealed how long lived this wine will be.  Tasted by LWI on 12/17/2022 & rated 97 points: Julebord: Ingen merkbar ullage og spenstig kork. Grafitt, aske og mørke bær, noe brett, kompleks nese; stor fruktkjerne, men overraskende strukturert til å være en -82. Utrolig lengde og finish, og ettersmaken sitter til dagen etter. WOTN (1898 views)
Tasted by KenK on 12/14/2022 & rated 92 points: Quite good, but served along side a 1989 Leoville Las Cases, this was somewhat faded. Spicy, dried black fruits, and tasty. The increasing advice to drink up the ‘82’s is proving true based on this example. (1518 views)

Tasted by shifter on 11/15/2022 & rated 97 points: Decant off sediment. Cork was almost fully saturated which was worrysome, but there was good fruit on the nose. Seemed a bit tight so rested in the decanter for 2 hours then back in the bottle to the restaurant. Poured 2 hours later and absolutely singing on the nose, in a perfect place. Black and blue fruit, fresh tobacco, saddle leather, herbs on the nose. Luxurious mouthfeel, velvety, fully integrated tannins, fruit and spice with some charcuterie on the palate. Finish goes on and on and on. Followed over 2 hours and didn't really drop off, but didn't improve. I think we got it right in the sweet spot with the decant time. Extremely sexy in a masculine way. Like finding your favorite, worn leather gloves that fit perfectly and you thought you lost. (1923 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 11/11/2022 & rated 96 points: 1982 Bordeaux (Jason's house): Decanted about an hour. Blue fruit is evident, which I always seem to get from Haut Brion. A touch of rubber, meat, mocha, black currant and tobacco. Quite outstanding. (2013 views)
Tasted by WineBurrowingWombat on 11/10/2022 & rated 97 points: Wine weekend in the Twin Cities; 11/10/2022-11/12/2022 (Where the frosty air is refreshing.. kind of): N: So pretty on the nose, gentle yet intense and dark with red fruits, crushed stones like rubble, dark green brambles and stems. Surprisingly, did not pick up much, if any, tertiary notes. If there were any, it was very subtle compared to the other bottles.

P: Fresh and still lively with dark red fruits, gently spiced oak, damp wet earth, and gently steeped tea. A nice essence of burnt, floating embers as well as floral aspects on the palate. All these flavors show so much pretty, but also some serious, elegance.

The dark fruit is on a different level of brooding and menacing. This fruit has been around for a long time, making a name for itself, almost something of a legend, having a weathered and serious characteristic on the palate. It is nothing like the youthful, brooding fruit where it exhibits tons of dark and ripe fruit with ambitious energy. There is much nuance and finesse to the palate but with power as well. So damn intriguing. Drink now or soon. This may hold fruit better than the other bottlings in this tasting but not sure as to how long. (2233 views)
Tasted by I'd Rather Be Drinking Wine on 11/10/2022 & rated 96 points: Guys Night - 1982 Bordeaux! (Jason's House): 3 hour decant (decanted when we sat down to dinner...was part of our last flight 3 hours later). This wine was part of a special flight...I only had one of each of the following: This wine, a La Mission Haut Brion and a Lafite, which quite honestly wasn't sure it would even be good, so I really wanted to compare the La Mission to its cousin Haut Brion, and I added the Lafite as a blind wine, because it seemed good when I opened it, and was curious how it would compare to the other two wines in the flight, without any bias. Of course, per the theme of the dinner, all were 1982's.

We had already had impressive showings from a few other 1982 Bordeaux wines (How can you ever go wrong with this epic vintage?) Although, as with most tastings, you end up giddy, like a kid in a candy store who has just been told to eat what you want! I will say all three wines were outstanding! Score one for getting lucky, as none were purchased on release! This trio reminded me of a horse race....the LMHB took the early lead with a strong nose and a glorious palate...then the Lafite drove up along the rail to challenge with a perfumed nose and some awesome fruit on the palate coupled with tertiary goodness...the Haut Brion tried to challenge late, but was just slightly outclassed by the other two, although it remained only a step behind the leaders throughout the race! In the end, it was a close race, but the aromatics coupled with a well-balanced palate between fruit and tertiary flavors pushed the Lafite to front of the pack by a head! OK...so back to this wine....

TN - This wine showed the gravelly notes you expect from Graves and from Haut Brion, but it was never as intense as the La Mission HB. The nose also showed plenty of old leather, sweet tobacco and tar to go along with some red and blue fruit (a cross between dark red cherry and blueberry) coupled with dry herbs and hints of spice. But it was the earth and gravel that stood out most, as this wine, like the LMHB, leaned slightly on the tertiary side of the fence. On the palate, this had slightly more fruit than the LMHB, but not nearly as much as the Lafite. While I typically favor older wines with more fruit, I found the LMHB to be the more compelling wine. IMO, it showed off the terroir much better. This is a great wine, and I likely would have enjoyed it even more if I was drinking this alone, and not comparing it to other wines. It was heads and tails above the wines from previous flights, but always seemed a half step behind in this flight. 96+ points, and that is being conservative (plus, to date, my highest rated wine is 98) (1916 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 11/10/2022 & rated 97 points: Guy's Night: 1982 Bordeaux -- One for the Books (Jason P's, St. Paul, MN): Very dark red plus color, 4mm transitional margin. Three hour decant, then drank a glass plus over 3 hours plus. This was in a trifecta of killer '82's including '82 LMHB, '82 Haut Brion, and '82 Lafite. The Lafite was a mystery wine ringer drank blind in the grouping. Lovely to start, but not the powerhouse that the LMHB is on the nose out of the gate. The nose builds reaching a zenith some 3 hours later. But the palate is driving everything from the start. Dried herbs, dried forest floor, fine tobacco, leather, cassis, deep cherry, and scorched earth on the nose. The palate is sublime and so refined, cigar, cassis, leather, youthful in its 40 years, red cherry, loads of well defined scorched earth and creosote, a little herbal, with a very long, intense finish. This all continues to evolve over the evening with the nose hitting new heights and the whole package showing a harmony that was right there with the LMHB at its peak.

For the first two hours or more, the LMHB at its peak was clearly the stand out, By the end of the night (4hrs in) the the HB and Lafite had come together more harmoniously as the LMHB lost a little of the nose whilst the other's evolved further to make things very interesting. The Haut Brion and Lafite were nearly on par with each other giving a subtle nod to the HB, and the LMHB was just a step behind then. None of these wines are in any danger of falling off in the near future. (1512 views)

Notes: This magnificent wine was breathed in the bottle for around 30 mins before consumption. Condition was decent despite a bin soiled label. In recent days I'm a little skeptical if 1982s could really continue to perform in the 2020s and the 2030s which many have previously predicted. Haut Brion 82 is probably not among the very top notch in the vintage but certainly it performed very well this evening. Classic and signature notes of HB and Graves, I would imagine that right now we're in the second half of the optimal drinking window of this wine and I would remain doubtful if the wine is worth further cellaring. If you have access to this bottle you should sell or drink up. It is delicious and would once again remind the drinker that an excellent aged bordeaux is always a delight! The palate, despite becoming quite medium bodied is still able to withhold an elegant structure and could still pair with strong flavored cuisine.

Clearly, this is now a top vintage of Haut Brion packed with layers of ripe, smoky, earthy fruits, tar, spice, smoke, tobacco leaf, cigar box and red fruits.  Tasted by JRockEsq on 3/20/2022 & rated 89 points: Method: bottle purchased on release (I believe) and stored professionally; pop and pour; opened about 1 - 2 hours before I tasted it; I got a small pour from the bottom of the bottle; red wine glass

Look: medium to light+ garnet with a slight tawny tint

Nose: forest floor / leaves, iodine, dry cherry, light green olive, nutmeg, allspice, clove, bay leaf, dry dark cherry; great and complex nose

Palate: dark cherry, cigar box, forest floor, nutmeg, graphite; long+ finish of graphite, pepper, dry tobacco, baking spice; dry; medium- body; medium+ acidity and slightly tart; medium+ fine tannin

Overall thoughts: I feel weird being in the minority here, but while this wine was very good it didn't really impress me. Great nose with a ton of complexity. Complex note on the palate, but not quite as refined as I'd prefer and the concentration of the flavor might have been a touch less than I'd prefer compared to the still very present structure. It's possible this needed some serious air and/or more time in bottle. Very good wine. (2729 views)

Third Flight - Lynch Bages, Pichon Lalande, La Tour Haut Brion, Haut Brion

My TN from Jan 2021 was on point “…paired with an excellent looking 1982 Pichon Lalande and what a lovely pair they were. The PL was a dark fruited, perfectly proportioned, luxuriously textured Pauillac, showing maturing complexity while retaining an energetic youthfulness of a far younger wine. The HB expressed the same remarkable vintage characteristics as well looking half it’s age with a bouquet filled with dark red fruits, intense cedar and tobacco, wet stone and herbal notes. A more elegant palate than the richer styled PL. Silky tannins, perfectly balanced, layer after layer of still youthful fruit, long haunting finish. This pair certainly confirms to me that well stored 1982s are far from over the hill and still show the magic of the vintage“

Haut Brion was my WOTN edging out an excellent bottle of Canon. (2124 views)

Held up well for its age, but virtually all its fruit was gone by this point. Still burly, dark and meaty. Paired with duck breast beautifully. We had four 82s side by side, this, a Margaux, an LLC and a Certan de May. While this was not the best (LLC took the honors), it was my favorite pairing with the duck and the first to vanish.  Tasted by Benoit Hardy on 8/19/2021 & rated 94 points: The nose is intense on tobacco and cigar.

The palate is massive but has a silky feel. The fruit has completely disappeared to give way to powerful aromas of smoke, dried meat, and above all eucalyptus and menthol, which take over during the tasting. The wine appears to be fresh, well built, mature and complex. However, you have to like this mixture of leather and menthol which becomes invasive on the palate, even if it remains digestible and very balanced. Huge finish on menthol which inevitably gives a big length to the wine but which lacks finesse.

It remains objectively excellent but I have already noticed that I am quickly tired of those herbaceous aromas which are heady and mask the rest. Trotanoy or Cheval Blanc 1982 are much more elegant and complete from my point of view. (2363 views)

Instead, there’s a nice core of firm red fruit gently framed by well judged acidity and tannin. Fragrance is very pleasant amalgamation of dark fruits. Obviously fully mature and while energetic to start, it faded a bit after an hour. It’s lovely but not as distinctive as I would like. Quite disappointing, since I selected this wine to drink for a 40th Wedding Anniversary Dinner. I stopped buying wines at auction over a decade ago because of provenance. This bottle supports my decision. I bought thousands of bottles of futures for vintages 2000 through 2010 and have yet to had a bottle this undrinkable. Maybe a couple of bottles slightly off.
For this bottle, no blame to the Chateau which makes exquisite wines. I hosted, along with H.R.H. Prince Robert of Luxembourg, a dinner at Restaurant Daniel on December 10, 2014, and we celebrated and enjoyed many wonderful wines and vintages of Chateau Haut Brion.
Beware when buying at auction. Caveat emptor! (2774 views)
Tasted by fclarity on 3/20/2021 & rated 96 points: Tasted blind, I don't recall the last time I had this wine. It had a deep red/purple center with light red/orange rims. The high- intensity nose generated mocha, black currant, plum, and mineral notes.

In the mouth, this wine was medium+ bodied with great balance. It had incredible intensity and complexity.

I was told this bottle was given at least 3 hours of air before the tasting started (so + another 3 during the tasting). This wine appears to have been misread by RP and is another in a long line of great HB bottles. It even appears to have 1-3 points of upside! (2690 views)

Tasted by paul195 on 1/10/2021 & rated 97 points: #1 of 6. Decanted at 4:00 served at 7:00 This was paired with an excellent looking 1982 Pichon Lalande and what a lovely pair they were. This pair certainly confirms to me that well stored 1982s are far from over the hill and still show the magic of the vintage (2843 views)

First and foremost, the nose on this baby was as great as I have ever experienced. There was rich earth, warming river stones, dark red and black fruit, tobacco, cigar box, tobacco spice, baking spices galore, and an uncanny bacon fat aroma that made me think of the 1898 Chave I shared with FMIII a couple of years back! The wine was so great to drink, as well, as the noble dark red and black fruit came to attention in such a sure way, with no rough edges, just perfect symmetry and great length. Every sip lingered, and has stayed with me for months. I cannot wait to drink another bottle. I believe this wine is still on the young side of its aging curve! Great to drink this with Robert on his birthday. (I wish he would post his notes here!) (2083 views)

This started with a nose of blood pudding and a palate of an ashtray (in the best way possible). An intensity on the palate that was quite shocking, cigarette ash not cigar. The ashiness transformed into old leather, blood, and fireplace in an hour, all supported by enough fruit to be there but now get in the way. I am honestly stunned by how good this was even though I had massive expectations. Going to go buy more now. (2489 views)

The nose is fully, but not over-developed. Notes of tobacco and gravel right away, but with a bit of air in the glass it starts showing lots of herbal elements, some hibiscus and nice dark fruit (dried plum, blackberry compote). Palate is silky smooth, unbelievable. The wine itself offers superb depth and complexity, but it drinks like a fine Pinot. Still grippy and long on the finish. The cigar box descriptor is often used for Haut Brion and its particularly applicable here. Tannins are fully resolved and there is a very pleasant sweet fruit that you get from mature Bordeaux on the palate. Fully mature nose displaying sweet red fruit with a hint of black, strawberry, plum, black cherry, crème de cassis, tobacco, ash, milky chocolate, leather and earth. Very soft and round palate with subtle red fruit, silky and warm, perfect amount of acidity, subtle mineral and a medium to long sweet red fruit driven finish with tobacco and ash at the end. Nonetheless, for my taste, now is a splendid time to open this, with its beautiful leafy quality. There are also some tobacco notes, as well as a hit of minerality on the nose. The palate is complex and concentrated, with ample amounts of material to work through. The fruit is a little demure now, and the palate feels to be dominated more by the dried fruit and leathery flavours. There doesn't seem to be enough sweetness and fruit for further aging, and I think that having the touch of ripe fruit that is remaining today makes this a far more enjoyable wine. (3721 views)

Tasted by sdr on 6/29/2019 & rated 92 points: From a recent acquisition of Wine Watch, this bottle looked great, ullage 1.5 centimeter, clean label and capsule, cork almost soaked through and tight. The color indicates a mature or over mature wine, though, being maroon to brownish. Unfocused at first, it gradually unwound as it breathed to reveal the classic Haut-Brion profile of gentle smoke and brick, amazingly mesmerizing if you like it. Slightly high in acidity and a tiny bit of a drop off in the mid palate, it’s still a very fine drink. Losing its grip and not as silky as some examples but lovely anyway if you adore Haut-Brion. Nothing is better than this wine. It’s beauty cut through the fatigued palate, the food, my self-hatred, the noise, and Made Moot all the envious glances of people NOT brash & seated near our able host with absolute authority — at hour 1 and again at hour 3. Consensus Wine of the night.

[The 1999 Rousseau Beze and 90HB (as well as anything called Salon) had a similar effect on me.]

I think I caught this bottle right on the edge of sliding into 'tired, on the way down' territory. Thankfully, it was still on the right side, and we had a great time with this wine.

Wonderful nose with the whole spectrum of fruit, balanced with more teritiary, earthy notes and laced with Haut Brion's signature smokiness. Tannins fully resolved but the structure was still there, going down effortlessly on the palate.

I think I would have preferred just a little more freshness and vibrancy - but that may just be personal preference. Still, an excellent HB and a wonderful treat for a Mayfair evening. (1014 views)

Some inky darkness but with pretty florals and violets. This is curiously very Margaux in character, although coming back there are give away Haut Brion spices and cigar box red cedar. This palate is deeply flavorful, but the edges are a touch sharper and the texture is just a bit tougher than that on the '82 Margaux which is round and silky (finally a good one). I stylistically prefer Haut Brion, and between these two perfect bottles tonight the HB has a more interesting and expressive personality whereas the Margaux is a straight up beauty. (4679 views)

Tasted by UTPK on 2/27/2018: Had it together with Montrose 1989 which it completely blew away. The 1982 HB is perfect now. Sweet nose with beginning tertiary aromas of forest floor, chantarels but also seconday aromas of cedar, pipe tobacco and muberries. On the palate it is very silky and hamonious. Medium body with sweet fruit and fresh acidity. There is still enough tannins to give some grip. The finish is so balanced and very, very long. A testament to the great 1982 vintage. (2850 views)

Tasted by Jeff Leve on 12/16/2017 & rated 98 points: This is just a beautiful wine. It's pure silk on the palate. The fruit is ripe, sweet, fresh, subtle, and the smoky, cigar wrapper, wet earth, burning campfire and sweet, cherry notes just sing. it is hard to say what is better, the nose or the palate. And who cares? Both are equally stunning! Popped and poured, this is in the sweet spot, and it should get even better, if well stored. (4888 views)

Tasted by tinybubbles on 9/27/2017 & rated 96 points: Enchanting nose with tar notes, super saturated dark fruit, cedar, white and black pepper, black earth, and tobacco. Deep and dense palate with a long finish. (5083 views)
Tasted by vinhslee on 8/24/2017 & rated 98 points: The bottle is of pristine condition (high fill level, perfectly soaked but intact cork). The cork is a lot softer than expected. It is so soft that I could pull out the cork without using the lever, and put the cork back in.

PnP:

Classic smell of blackcurrant, cedar, leather, dried spice and alcohol leaps out of the bottle.

On the palate, it has wonderful layers of blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, cassis, dried spice flavours, followed by undertone of leather, cinnamon and earthiness. Nicely balanced by high acidity. Fully ripened (but still high) tannins. The finish goes on for at least 2 minutes. It hardly feels alcoholic. It is energetic and expressive yet elegant.

This is a very good wine. But there isn't anything that makes this wine unique or distinctive. It isn't intriguing enough to make me wonder how it was made. It just doesn't connect with me and stops short of moving me as a magical or religious thing. (5392 views)
Tasted by BradE on 8/1/2017: A very good 82 HB, which is normally outstanding. Decanted four hours ahead of drinking, it improved marked over the four hour lunch. More air next time. (5965 views)
Tasted by sdr on 7/15/2017 & rated 92 points: This bottle, from the WW "The Collection," was very good rather than great. Firm, moist cork which I extracted in one piece. Good mature color, orange rim. The classic Graves fragrance was there when first opened but after a few minutes retreated into the bottle. Still, nice, firm red fruits. Good palate presence until it unfortunately got too warm at the restaurant and lost all focus and interest. Based on this well stored bottle, the '82 Haut Brion is not destined for further decades of longevity. (5762 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 6/2/2017 & rated 96 points: Fantastic bottle, with the fruit, tar and spice notes combining to lend an aromatic perfume to the nose. Quite a bit softer at this point than the '89, but with every bit of complexity, if not more. (6413 views)
Tasted by DrZett on 5/25/2017 & rated 92 points: Great 1982 vs 1990 Vintage Tasting (Rare-Bordeaux-Weine, Wachtberg (Germany)): Nice aging notes and a beautiful body. Soft tannins, medium-long finish. A little over its peak in my opinion but still a great wine with a great structure after all these years. (3026 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 4/25/2017: Miscellaneous Wines from a France Trip-Burgundy, Alsace, and Paris; 4/20/2017-4/29/2017: Gorgeous dark ruby core with gentle gradation toward the outer third. Wow, what a hit of tobacco right out of the decanter joined later by secondary perfume. Round, completely harmonious, gently sweet fruit, outstanding acidity and freshness for this iconic year, superbly refined tannins. This picked up both more wintergreen and bitter chocolate over several hours, and its mineral core became more obvious. This perfectly cellared bottle could have easily aged for another 20 years. Does Bordeaux ever get more complex and elegant than this? Superb. (6271 views)
Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 4/24/2017 flawed bottle: Barnyard. Somewhere on the spectrum between sauvage and corked. More towards the latter in my view. In spite of this just so much red fruit and red cherries. Could tell this was/is special but this bottle was off. Second bottle of HB I have had with this unfortunate aspect (other was an 85). More barnyard the longer this sits. Hard to get away from it. (4747 views)
Tasted by Ary on 4/8/2017 & rated 97 points: Haut-Brion Vertical (semi-blind tasting) (Amsterdam Wijn Antiquariaat): Classic 1982, classic Haut-Brion. Ruby red with orange-brick on the rim. Typical Haut-Brion in the nose; cigar box, iron, earth and smoke. Powerful palate with excellent elegance, softness and intensity. A longlingering finish with well-integrated tannins. Should hold well for at least another ten years. (4783 views)

Tasted by dchain on 1/7/2017 & rated 97 points: Wow. This is a fantastic wine. Still deep ruby. Very open and inviting. Guessed this one semi-blind as it was served in the HB/LMHB flight. Clearly different from LMHB. More depth, brooding dark cherry, cigar box, hot cement/tarmac road minerality. So seductive on the nose. Deep dark also chocolate infused cherry fruit on the palate. So long, true first growth quality here! (4223 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 12/25/2016 & rated 96 points: Aha! A great Haut Brion. This took 2 hours to get started but when it did, it offered plenty of classic HB notes. Rich black cherry, mineral, oak, loam, lavender, baked brick. Crystalline quality to the nose, the Merlot really coming through. Plenty of depth and precision on the palate. A wine with good breeding. 96-7 (4893 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 12/7/2016 & rated 98 points: For our Bordeaux First Growth Dinner, Chateau Haut Brion, Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Margaux, and Chateau Lafite Rothschild, nose of blackberry, black currants, saddle leather, cigar box, and a hot gravel road, same on the palate, big body, silky and rich fruit, mouth filling, complex, opened from the beginning and got better as the dinner went on, great with the Beef Bourgogne, tied with the Chateau Margaux for the first 45 minutes, long finish.  Tasted by RockinCabs on 11/19/2016 & rated 97 points: Nose: soaring out of the glass you could smell this before your nose approached the rim. Perfumed blackberry, currant, damp earth, tobacco, cedar and gravel. Complex nose hints at what is in store next. Palate: Silky feel with a little tannin remaining. Gorgeous black fruit, smoke, tobacco and leather notes. Florals and a bit of tarry rock and macerated cherries as well. Finish: Detailed and precise on the finish.

This wine is the whole package. Classic, elegant pessac with tons of complexity, good balance of power and terroir characteristics. Loved it! (4405 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 11/3/2016 & rated 96 points: Château Haut-Brion Vertical (Bouley): Gorgeous bouquet of red cedar bark shavings, maturing currant fruit, damp leather, damp earth, cigar box, chocolaty notes, and distinct bouldery minerality. Savoury too. This is all there. Dense, precise, and very generous on the palate. Loads of ripe blackberry and currant fruit for the finish. Looking like wine of the night. (4526 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 10/25/2016 & rated 95 points: Double decanted for one hour. Could be bottle variation. The nose was initially the most open in the first growth lineup. But the wine quickly declined in the glass. After 3 hours, it woke up and was so beautiful with finesse and power. (4045 views)
Tasted by Comte Flaneur on 10/17/2016 & rated 97 points: Bright garnet, quite a subdued nose, wonderful expansive rich chocolatey mouth feel, beautifully resolved, with red bricks, earth, a silky texture and luxurious finish. This wine was opened at 6pm while the other 82s were opened and double decanted around mid-afternoon over a concern that this might fade. It was the most advanced wine of the flight but was in my opinion in a perfect place. It may have lacked a bit of mid-palate oomph compared to the other wines last night but overall it was glorious. Drink now. (2008 views)
Tasted by Peliot on 10/14/2016 & rated 100 points: Tres Ninos '82 bdx tasting (HB, Margaux, L'evangile, Mouton). The Haut Brion was unanimous wine of the night. The wine was in amazing condition for 34 years old, with no bricking and smokey purple color. Nose of gravel, tobacco leaf, dark fruits, anise, menthol, and lots of other nice things that are hard to name. This evolved and changed in the glass. No two sips were alike. Very silky, powerful, and elegant in the mouth. The finish? It's the next day and it's still with me. My first 1982 and the vintage lives up to the hype. (3786 views)
Tasted by fokker on 9/16/2016 & rated 96 points: Mid-Autumn Festival and 2 days after my wife's birthday. Dinner with nice friends in a Teppanyaki restaurant. Needed to drink great wines.
So,after the 67 Latour, I opened the 82 Haut Brion to go with the Iberian pork chops. This bottle had good appearance with high fills.
Dense, sweet with the exquisite Haut Brion tabacco/cigar/oolong tea/stewed prune smokiness, it had a lingering finish which lasted hours. Very smooth, and can last a few more years.
Confirmed again as my favourite first growth. (3950 views)
Tasted by Nicholas81 on 9/14/2016 & rated 98 points: An amazing wine. The nose was huge on plums, cassis, blackberries and exotic spices. A totally seductive, sexy and wild wine. Smoky, cigar wood, camphor, menthol, gravel and undergrowth. The Haut Brion is the exotic arabian counterpart to the Cheval Blanc '82's very classical roman profile. If compared to whisky, the Cheval Blanc would be a Speyside and the Haut Brion an Islay. Equally good but very different. The finish was flawless and left a lingering smokiness and spiciness. Drunk together with the '82 Cheval Blanc. I can safely say this is the best experience in wine I've had so far. The extra 2 points above the Cheval Blanc's 96pts that I gave it is based on preference. (3009 views)

Tasted by dcwino on 8/12/2016 & rated 97 points: Mostly Bordeaux dinner with Bob (Magdalena restaurant at the Ivy Hotel, Baltimore): Softest and warmest of the 82s. Beautiful harmonious nose displaying warm red fruit, plum, strawberry, raw button mushroom, mint, smoke, ash and earthy. Good concentration, fully integrated harmonious palate, ware and soft red fruit driven palate impression, good mineral presence, nicely integrated tannins and long finish that ends with a hint of ash. A great example of textbook HB, all about finesse and warmth. Drinking beautifully. (4846 views)
Tasted by blanquito on 8/10/2016 & rated 97 points: Quintessential Graves bouquet of smoke, warm brick, forest floor, cedar, black fruits. So expressive, complex, distinctive and compelling, pretty close to a perfect nose. The palate was resolved and silky, giving a tremendously classy and seamless display, though still a notch down from the bouquet. I kept coming back this and it seemed better each time. A real treat and worthy of a mature 1st Growth in a great year. (3628 views)
Tasted by sdr on 8/10/2016 & rated 94 points: From the same local source as a recent spectacular bottle, this one started out shaky but fortunately gained altitude and soared to outstanding height although still short of spectacular. Ullage was just into neck and the cork came out easily (a bit too easily) in one piece. Over several hours the bouquet woke up and eventually exhibited the classical Haut Brion campfire smoke, tobacco, cedar and cinnamon spice, catnip to those who adore the Graves. Elegant texture, really fine, surely at its peak of development now. (3672 views)
Tasted by sdr on 7/2/2016 & rated 96 points: Fantastic showing for this Haut Brion, sourced from a recent private cellar acquisition from Wine Watch. Incredibly youthful, it seemed more like a vintage 2000 than an '82, so clearly it had been stored in a cold environment for its entire life. When first opened, the characteristic bricky, smoky Graves character was on display, but at the restaurant, it sunk back in the bottle for almost two hours. Instead, there was a more classical left bank fragrance of blackberry, cassis and dark raspberry of supreme elegance. Medium to full bodied, silky, exquisite. A revelation. (3951 views)

Tasted by sdr on 4/30/2016 & rated 95 points: I underestimated the '82 Haut-Brion when it was younger. Now it has filled out tremendously and seems more akin to a great La Mission in its power than the usually more polite Haut-Brion. It sacrifices some of the elegance it usually has but the trade off is worthwhile. Starting to lose color yet the bouquet is intensely smoky, almost overwhelming. On the palate, deep and intense with sound underlying acidity and well integrated tannins. The fruit is in its secondary phase. While no hurry to drink, I don't see any value in aging it much further. (4018 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 4/28/2016 & rated 97 points: Drinking beautifully today, the tobacco, smoke and cigar box notes perfectly frame the fresh, sweet, plums and cherries. Medium-full bodied of mature, well balanced & smooth textured, ripe, fruit flavors of sweet cherries, dried cranberries & dark plums with herbs, exotic spices, earthy, mushrooms, gravel/stony &minerals. Long lingering & silky smooth finish.  Tasted by BradE on 10/12/2014: Four great 82 BDX tonight, flighted together. Haut Brion was WOTN for me. Simply incredible, as always, and ridiculously enjoyable. A tie for #2: Margaux and Pichon Lalande. The Margaux was the most primary, and seems to have literally 25 years of life ahead of it. Relaxed a bit in the glass over an hour or so. The Pichon Lalande was in some respects the classiest of the group, and was terrific, but lost a little in the sexiness rating. The 82 Leoville Poyferre was terrific, and in most dinners might contend for WOTN, but tonight was a very high class last place. 82's of perfect provenance are such a pleasure. (5466 views)

Tasted by nortonnose on 12/10/2013 & rated 96 points: My first ever '82 HB taste - woohoo! :) Friend's bottle - 750ml, VTS fill. Decanted for 1 hr, then put back in bottle to serve alongside '82 Cheval Blanc over steaks and laughs and hours. Dimly lit room but color still noticeably dark (!). Very open and expressive on the nose, showing dark fruit and charmingly grungy cedar/smoky/herbal components. Palate is deep and rich and balanced and very clearly from the left bank. Awesome tannin and structure to this bottle. Wonderful, long, lingering finish. Both wines literally continued to improve with each passing minute - we finished them 3.5 hrs after we began sipping them. I love the CT suggested "until 2075" window - if only we had a time capsule to see what this would be like 60 yrs from now. I wouldn't wait that long if given the choice! But this bottle easily suggested it has the stuffing to drink beautifully for the next 10-15 yrs minimum. (5686 views)

Refined, elegant, soft and expressive, thee wine remains on your palate serving up a healthy dose of sweet, silky, pure red cherries. Fully mature, there is no hurry to drink it, but I am not sure how much better it’s going to get. This pristine bottle was one of the best examples of 1982 Haut Brion I've tasted. (5856 views)

Elegant, perfumed, graceful, fully mature, refined, pure, soft and silky, this was a very nice wine, but it was not going to be confused with a great bottle of Haut Brion. It is important to remember that not all bottles are created alike. The next bottle could be the same, or it could be better. (6156 views)
Tasted by BradE on 11/12/2013: Drunk the 82 Haut Brion and 82 Mouton side by side. The nose on the Mouton was exquisite, and both were perfect bottles. The HB was broader, and for me the favorite. Others like the intensity and purity of the Mouton. Both were fantastic, and a reminder of how good bdx can be. (5357 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 10/20/2013 & rated 97 points: 1982 Bordeaux dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): A very fresh example, expressive nose displaying ripe sweet red fruits, plum, graphite, smoke, mushroom and earth. A hint of green that keeps the wine interesting and accentuates graphite and smoke notes. Medium concentration, silky and nice integrated tannins. This is a classic HB that seems to show less of the 82 vintage characteristics than the other FGs. Not having the same degree of concentration and more ready compare to the other 82 FGs. Nevertheless a classic HB with great balance that is drinking magnificently. (6611 views)

Tasted by Dubie on 6/22/2013 & rated 94 points: Stunning bottles, served following a pair of 1978 Palmer that were excellent. This pair, sourced from the chateau in 2005, was in perfect condition with mid-neck / 1cm fills. The HB perfume was in the air as we poured the wine into their glasses. A complex wine, having now developed some tertiary yet etheral aromas, and adding to the balanced fruit and well melted tannins. I don't often drink Bordeaux, but this is the type of wine that reconciles you with Burgundy's ugly sister! (5887 views)
Tasted by senna22 on 4/27/2013: Decanted for 4 hours before our meal. Both wines bought on release and consistently cellared. (6553 views)
Tasted by BradE on 4/26/2013: A trio of 90 Latour, 82 Haut Brion, and 89 Lynch Bages. All were great, but the 90 Latour was head and shoulders above the others in this flight. The Latour had depth, and focus, and is likely still on its upside trajectory. The 89 Lynch was very good, and is a wine I love, but it couldn't match up. This bottle of 82 Haut Brion was good, but I've had much better bottles over the past couple of years. Nonetheless, I do think 82 first growths are past their prime (even the HB) and encourage drinking them sooner rather than later. (6174 views)

Tasted by Jeff Leve on 3/16/2013 & rated 95 points: This bottle seemed lighter in color and more advanced than other bottles tasted recently. The nose offered an array of smoke, tobacco, cigar box, ah, blackberry, cherry, earth and wet forest notes. On the palate, the wine was pure silk and velvet, but it was missing the depth found in other bottles I liked more. Once again, it's all about the provenance. (6499 views)
Tasted by fclarity on 3/3/2013 & rated 94 points: Tasted blind, this wine had a deep red/purple center with red rims. The medium+ intensity nose displayed black cherries, minerals, soil, and some Provencal herbs. It did not show obvious Graves stones even after 4 hours of decanter time.

In the mouth, this wine was medium bodied with great richness, rounded tannin, and great length. The great balance and integration of this wine will make many think it is ready to drink. However, the evidence indicates that this wine is still an adolescent. While this comment may surprise some, tasting the youth of the 1961 is educational.

If you are going to drink it now, I would suggest 6+ hours of decanter time. It should pick-up 2-4 points with 20 -30 years in the cellar. (6154 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 12/28/2012 & rated 95 points: With a captivating, smoky, tobacco, tar, wet earth, black berry, spice, plum and cherry filled nose, the wine is pure elegance. This is not the most concentrated vintage of Haut Brion, but there is a beauty to the finesse textures coupled with a purity of spicy, sweet, ripe cherries in the finish that makes this a treat! While there is no hurry to drink this wine, at 30 years of age, I'm not sure how much more evolution will be gained by holding it longer. (7309 views)

Medium-bodied, with a round, lush mouthfeel and velvety texture. Incredibly elegant, with great depth, layers of flavor, and perfect balance. Great grip and focus on the amazingly long finish. Bit of raisin on the finish to show the age ad well as stewed plum.

Tasted by Paul S on 12/27/2011 & rated 96 points: Wine Bash of the Year 2011 (Jade Palace): This was crazy good. The best bottle of Haut-Brion I have had thus far, it would have been wine of the night on most other nights but this one. Popped an hour or so before serving, I snuck my nose into the glass and wow, what a bouquet! Pure Graves, it showed drifts of tobacco and spice, some black tea and damp leaves, dark cassis and plums, all layered over a beautiful undertone of earth and wet gravel. Incredible - amidst all the wonderful Burgundies, this had a bouquets to match the best of them. I actually liked the nose more than the palate, but that is not to say that it was not wonderful as well. Here, melting tannins and beautiful acidity seemed to melt over a core of delicious cassis and dark cherry flavours ringed by a wonderful waft of tobacco. A complete wine, it had all of the incredible sense of light and transperancy that only the first growths seem to show. The finish was first class too, floating over the back-palate on a bed of damp gravelly notes alongside a wonderful waft of dark berries and cherries. Wow. What I especially liked about it was that it came across as a classic Graves, even a classic Haut-Brion in spite of the heat of the 1982 vintage. A great wine at a lovely place now, though it should continue developing effortlessly over the next decade or more. (11500 views)

Dark ruby red with light brown hue, bright! The nose was awesome, palate showed good depth and complexity but the finished is clipped at first. Without any worried, the wine continued to gain weight with better transition between mid palate and finish after getting more air. Captivating aromas of gravel, scotch earth, sweet cigar box and tobacco perfectly intermixed with Asian spices, violet, dried roses, creme de cassis and touch of refreshing mineral for the lift, this was every bit as good as the Burgs tonight! Aged Bordeaux rock! Stunningly fresh and intense on the palate, with layer and layer of sweet cassis, blackberry, herbs, tobacco, spices intermixed with inner perfume of violet. The palate is getting lusher and silkier for the enticing, sappy mouth feel. There were still some very fine tannin for better grip as well as further development for the next 3-5yrs. The finish is full of succulent juicy sweet dark fruits and tobacco, very long and lingering. This is a top class Bordeaux, perhaps just a touch smaller scale than the very best one. Still, amazingly delicious. (10695 views)

Tasted by VdB on 10/9/2011: Clear, dark ruby/garnet with still barely a hint of brown (still a young look); legs/tears noted though this clearly has none of the high alcohol levels so often seen today.
The nose was very clean on both bottles. Wonderfully stored at the Wine Cave. Fully developed, with beautiful secondary aromas of smokiness, tobacco, pencil leaf, but also some muted deep black fruit, cassis.
On the palate, the wine is very elegant with deep black fruit/cassis flavors, smokiness, tobacco, and a hint of pepper. Beautiful and still remarkably young. This has another 15 years of beautiful development ahead of it, probably even more. Still tannins in there.

Light-medium brick color with some ruby hue remaining in the center, fades to orange towards the rim, very glossy, medium viscosity. After several hours of decanting and some time in the glass, the wine was completely opened and held on strong to the end. The nose was classic but exciting mature Bordeaux with sweet fruit, earth, stone, mushrooms, gunpowder, cigar tobacco and a distinct cola aroma (the first time I've encountered that in a wine). Medium-full on the palate with a perfect level of acidity, completely integrated tannins in the background and some sweetness towards the end. The mouthfeel was unique, without better words I'd describe it as a Cos d'Estournel brought to Graves. The aftertaste goes on for over a minute bringing layers of pure oak, gunpowder, mineral notes and lingering acidity.  Tasted by gutt22 on 10/22/2010: 12.5% alcohol. Shockingly youthful color. It remains purple-tinged red. The bouquet tells you from the outset that you're in for a treat: this wine is perfect. It has a sappy, rich fruit note that floats out of the glass, followed by a perfume of herbs, minerals, graphite, tobacco, and earthy spice that screams Graves. Close your eyes as you smell this wine, and your mind will transport you to Haut-Brion, regardless of whether you've ever set foot on the grounds. This is how loudly the wine speaks on the nose. In the mouth, you cannot ask for a more perfect combination of power, balance, weightless concentration, attractive fruit, and intellectual complexity. This is a wine for all seasons and moods. The fruit leads the way, cool and inviting, relaxing your palate and allowing it to just sit back and enjoy the ride. And what a ride! The complex layers of earth dart in and out, constantly at play with the ever-present fruit. There is acidity and structure, but it is so refined, it's like a great waiter: ubiquitous yet invisible. The finish is so outstanding, you don't feel like you're tasting the wine's finish. It's almost as intense as the palate. Without a doubt, the best Bordeaux I've ever drunk and one of the handful of most memorable wines to cross my lips to date. A treat and a treasure. A+ (9585 views)

Tasted by sdr on 6/5/2010 & rated 95 points: The star of the Haut-Brion mini-vertical we did at Wish South Beach ('90, '89, '82, '70). After discarding a previous bottle from the same lot (Acker retail) because of VA, it was a relief to open this perfectly preserved bottle which also had a slightly loose cork but minimal ullage. Archetypal Haut-Brion from the wood smoke and cranberry aromas to the middleweight velvety slightly earthy dark berry fruit mid palate to the soft, satisfying finish. Unlike most of the other '82 Firsts, the HB is clearly fully mature, so the only question is how long it can hold on at this lofty level. (7890 views)
Tasted by dream on 2/12/2010 & rated 96 points: A perfectly stored bottle purchased on release and held in my cellar ever since. Showing quite youthful and not yet at its peak. Classic nose of warm bricks, smoky, sweet earth, and red spice. Surprisingly full-bodied and deeply concentrated with wonderful smoke and red brick flavors. Quite fresh with good intensity and richness. Finishes complex with rounded tannins that are almost resolved. This wine just keeps getting better and better but is still about 5 years from its zenith. 96+ (8857 views)

Tasted by wbq8f on 11/23/2009 & rated 96 points: Apart from the fact that the cork disintegrated when I tried to open the bottle, everything else was perfect. The nose was earthy and suggestive, not overwhelming; the first taste was exciting, some mushroomy and plum flavors, and then it just kept on evolving. The wine was like honey (not that it was so sweet, but almost viscous), it coated the tongue, and then layers of flavors would come forth. This is the first of the HB 82s that I have had that was fully ready to drink, the tannins, slightly noticeable when first opened, faded away pretty quickly. Someone said that Parker underestimated this wine. I agree. This is now right up there with the best. (8448 views)

Tasted by Jeff Leve on 6/28/2009 & rated 97 points: This is deep ruby in color with hints of brick around the edges. Aromas of smoke, spice, cassis, plums, coffee, hot wet stones and a faint hint of licorice make an incredible perfume. In your mouth, the texture is akin to letting ripe fruit melt over your palate with countless layers of velvety, plush fruit. Everything is in balance.  Tasted by dream on 6/7/2009 & rated 97 points: From a case just purchased at Zachys spring auction: Hauntingly complex nose of warm bricks, tobacco, roasted red fruit and char. A very good very young bottle of this wine that is still black in color although with browing edges. It needed a good 45 minutes before the guts of the wine kicked in and then just a gorgeously complex melange of charred wood, tar, tobacco and spices emerged. The texture of the wine is such that it literally rolls over the tongue bathing it in the hauntingly decadent flavors that are so unique to this vineyard. Parker has underrated this wine as it reaches maturity. Drink with barbequed steak and get ready for a taste of heaven. (9340 views)

Tasted by PurpleHaze on 9/2/2008 & rated 98 points: Medium ruby, a bit lighter than the Margaux served the same evening. I was a little worried about this bottle, as it exhibited a definite "funk" on the nose, which persisted for at least 45 minutes after decanting. Eventually, this "stank" blew off to reveal a stunning nose of dark fruit, currant, spices and saddle leather. In the mouth, more dark fruits and earthiness followed by a finish of close to a minute. Tied for the best HB in my experience with the Philly bottle of last year. Killer stuff. (10045 views)
Tasted by sdr on 8/23/2008 & rated 94 points: It seems this wine is gaining weight, complexity and interest as it arrives at middle age. Good color with some definite brick orange at the edge of the meniscus. A big wine in HB terms; immediately forthcoming aromas of dark berries, cedar and woodsmoke. The palate is outstanding with a wealth of rich, ripe and juicy blackberry fruit in perfect harmony. Distinctly a step up from the '85 we had next to it. Haut Brion is an elegant wine at the opposite end of the Pessac-Léognan spectrum from the equally fine but raw La Mission Haut-Brion.  Tasted by Stirling on 4/14/2008 & rated 100 points: I have to give the '82 Haut Brion a perfect score. To me it is THE reference point wine, the one by which all other scores are calibrated. I think this was my seventh time with this wine, and the last two times have been surreal. Brick/red in colour fading to orange at the rim. The nose is a wonderful mixture of cedar, wet stones, cassis, plum and other vinous delights. On the palate the complexity rises a notch as even more flavours come forth. It is so smooth: Haut Brion's trade mark balance comes through brilliantly. Everything is in its proper proportion, giving the sense of the "iron fist in the velvet glove." Perfect. (11250 views)

Tasted by noppakit s. on 12/19/2007 & rated 98 points: ...1982 is not the good vintage for Graves !!!

My 1st time was tested on 31 December 2005 along with Haut-Brion Blanc 1994. Both were great and very powerful. Same feeling of the amazing aftertaste. We two can not finish it...unbelievable.

2nd testing is wonderful...time passed by... It's sweet, getting more elegance but still deep powerful aftertaste in a softside.

Great nose of Haut-Brion. Beautiful cassis intermixed with Truffle, mud, stone and mineral, flowers. Very little greeny, pepper, so elegance, seductive and charming.

Full-bodied, very round, complex and balance. Lots of tannin, hints of some aged, sweetness, a little bit spicy and very delicious too. I love this fine wine than Mouton 1982 ( when it's in peak position between 1 - 2.30 hours.)

At this time, aftertaste is very smooth and go down very slowly to the heart. After full-filled the heart then stuck there, Slightly twist same like the last two years but less heavy...more gently...I mean.

After 2.30 hours, it shows some sign of weakness, more sweet, more flat but still very very nice when compare with Haut-Brion 1997 that I tested last few days ago. ( 89/100 )

I rated this wine the reversed score 98-94/100...Drink it now - 2011...

...and I want to tell you the secret ( 1982 is not the good vintage for Graves )...1990 is the answer !!! (10397 views)

Tasted April 13, 2007 at an offline. Opened and decanted for sediment right before serving. Garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Young nose, very clean with what I call that “Haut Brion perfume”. Nose of cedar, crushed dark fruits, whetstone and just a little leather early on. Much later in the evening picked up some secondary aromas of toasted caramel and/or coffee. Flavors of black cherries, black berries, currants and minerals. Excellent acidity, tannins and body make this wine a true pleasure to drink. Just about perfectly balanced in my opinion. Still quite young so can be drank now or held with ease. Tasted over a 4-5 hour period and never faded one iota during that timeframe. As a matter of fact, I made sure this was the last wine of the evening I tasted after cleansing my palate. Red wine of the night for me. (11010 views)

No more. This is by a wide margin the best example of '82 HB I've tasted. It probably helped that this bottle was purchased on release and properly stored. A four hour rest in the decanter proved just right, as the waves of classical woodsmoke, hickory and tobacco burst from the glass. On the palate, there's no trace of weakness.  Tasted by CSteefel on 11/11/2006 & rated 94 points: Right out of the gate, this wine showed a complex, multi-layered nose of old Cuban tobacco, mint, and faded saddle leather that had me immediately guessing Haut Brion. Should have stuck with my guess, which I changed later as I started to over-analyze. On the palate, this medium to full bodied wine was not quite the powerhouse one normally expects from a 1982, but it continued to improve in the glass as it seemed to gain more delineation, complexity, and weight with time. By the end of the flight, the building smoky multi-layered, aristocratic profile made it hands down the best in the flight in my opinion. (8295 views)

Tasted by BradE on 8/14/2006: For dinner, Diane strongly requested some HB. We pulled out the 82 HB and the 90 Baron, and with the Baron corked, we grabbed the 82 GPL. These had a quick 30 minute decant as we lingered over flight 1. Both were a touch tight as we started, but over dinner and after, they opened up nicely. It won't win a 1982 taste off against other first growths, but the 82 HB is a lovely wine. I like the way the tobacco/smoke plays off against brighter berries. (8020 views)

Tasted by jrufusj on 1/20/2006: 61/82 Bordeaux Dinner (Luxor in Marunouchi): Like the ’61, this is lighter than its peers with some rust orange at the edge. Among the expected earth and dust and baked plum and cassis fruit, the nose shows a distinctive green element – of green tea or coffee beans or tobacco. In other words, not leaves or stems, but something we are more accustomed to seeing in a softened, fermented state rather than a raw state. On the palate, this shows a lot of dusty, iron-tinged tannin balanced by a tremendous mid-palate glycerin sweetness. It is not hot at all, but shows more alcohol body than any other wine. Slurping vigorously brings out lightly stewed red fruit and some earthy spice. At this point, this is good and interesting, but disappointing. Revisited much later, the green element seems more exotic and less jarring. The palate has picked up a great black fruit depth that makes a major difference. The last sip of this was the best by far; this one needs a lot of air to show well. (9294 views)

Medium weight as it should be and nice finish.  Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 3/20/2003 & rated 96 points: 1982 Bordeaux Tasting - 1st Growths & Super Seconds (Los Angeles, California): Rich, spicy, spice box, plum nose; fig, black fruit, rich plum palate with some higher notes and mint showing up toward finish; long finish (1904 views)
Tasted by sdr on 2/1/2003 & rated 92 points: Premier Cru bottle. Good color, bricky now. Slightly shy, gradually blossomed in the glass. Really elegant. Fully mature. Gentle and subtle but unmistakable Haut-Brion character. Delicious. (2133 views)
Tasted by sdr on 8/1/2002 & rated 88 points: At Bistro 17. Unusually aromatic Haut-Brion. Wood right from the tree in addition to the usual smoke. Medium weight. Finishes a bit thin. Very good but swept aside by the ‘82 La Mission Haut-Brion. (2148 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 6/14/2002 & rated 95 points: Tasting of five 1982 Bordeaux blind, fourth place, more brick color in the glass than it's peers tonight, lots of leather, cedar, currants, and brioche on the nose, great mouth feel, great fruit and flavor on the palate, medium body, slight amount of soft tannins on the long finish. (3126 views)
Tasted by MikeATL on 4/28/2002: 1982 Bordeaux retrospective (Capital Grille, Buckhead): Haut-Brion has always been my favorite first growth, so it was no surprise that I loved the 1982 Haut-Brion. Strikingly elegant, and classic Haut-Brion, with loads of minerals, smoke, and tobacco overlaying rich raspberry fruit. Not a blockbuster, but a beautifully elegant, perfectly integrated wine that just sings right now. I wish I owned some. (3256 views)
Tasted by sdr on 4/1/2002 & rated 93 points: Genuine power and strength. Stood up well to the Asian style salmon at Roy’s Boca Raton. Classic Haut-Brion. (2135 views)
Tasted by sdr on 11/1/2001 & rated 95 points: I’m beginning to think this wine is actually fairly consistent but the impression I get varies with the setting and the other wines. This time served second after the ‘82 Cheval Blanc at the ‘82 First Growth tasting at Ocean Grand Palm Beach and it showed very well. Very classic Haut-Brion. Elegant in its own way. Archetypal. Maybe the best vintage of Haut-Brion for drinking now. Clearly à point. Outstanding but not mind blowing like the ‘89. (2194 views)
Tasted by sdr on 12/1/2000 & rated 95 points: Fabulous this time. Döppelganger for La Mission Haut-Brion. Roasted coffee, spicy. Fully mature, great future. (2167 views)
Tasted by sdr on 10/1/2000: One bottle from the ‘82 Pomerol/St. Émilion/Graves blind tasting. I forgot to score it. Advanced light color. Soft and smooth. Completely different from the bottle last year. (2131 views)
Tasted by sdr on 10/1/1999 & rated 95 points: Drunk at Masa’s San Francisco. Huge wine today. Smoky. Seems more like a top vintage of La Mission Haut-Brion. Marvelous. (2140 views)
Tasted by sdr on 1/1/1999 & rated 88 points: Rare Wine Company Sonoma bottle. Medium color, looks mature. Very pinched nose. Slowly woke up. Modest cedar and smoke. Medium weight. Lacks volume and fat. Short finish. Seems like it’s 25+ years old. But good harmony of fruit, oak, acid, tannins. Should be better than this, though. (2106 views)
Tasted by dbg on 10/11/1998: Great mature Bdx, super Graves nose with great complexity on nose &
on palate, awesome 60-second or more finish, I liked it best of
flight, voted 2nd to '86 Mouton (I thought not quite at peak),
beating out '90 Montrose (too young) and '90 Dominus (4243 views)
Tasted by mnh on 6/1/1997: aspen: eucalyptus nose. Needs time (3694 views)
Tasted by sdr on 5/1/1997 & rated 94 points: Medium ruby. Closed at first but got better with time. Real character. Much better than 2 years ago. Still young. Should plateau in 2-3 years and last well thereafter. Better than ‘82 LMHB today. Complete and long. Not chunky or inky at all. Quite splendid if not at the very top of the tree of ‘82 Bordeaux. (2098 views)
Tasted by sdr on 5/1/1995 & rated 88 points: Modest red cherry, bricky bouquet. Large scaled but a “hole in the middle.” A good, not great Haut-Brion. (2085 views)
Tasted by mnh on 1/1/1995: medium color, ripe plums, long finish, very nice (3713 views)
Tasted by dbg on 10/9/1994: soft, ripe, typical (4594 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 4/9/1991 & rated 96 points: INCREDIBLY RICH AROMAS AND FLAVORS THAT NEEDED LESS TIME THAN THE '82 PICHON IT WAS TASTED WITH TO BLOSSOM. LICORICE IN THE FLAVOR AS WELL. LONG FINISH. WILL FURTHER BENEFIT FROM 5+ YEARS OF AGING (2422 views)
Tasted by sdr on 2/1/1990 & rated 86 points: Strangely brown. Looks 50+ years old. But clean. Powerful, earthy, leathery. Roast chestnuts. Very Graves. Medium body. Good balance, not too tannic. Hard to predict future. (2087 views)

(Château Haut-Brion) Light medium brick red color with pale meniscus; mature, beckoning cassis, cedar and dried berry nose; lovely, elegant, mature but delicious, glimpses and echoes of lush tart berry, blackberry and cassis fruit; medium-plus finish 95+ pts.  95 points

Rockss and Fruit (3/20/2007)
(Chateau Haut Brion) Shows of the opulence of the vintage with it's ripe fruit profile. It was dense, concentrated with great refinement and waves of dense fruit on the palate. Easily the fruitiest wine of the night which was very interesting as the '02 was the most austere of the nigh with the least fruit. Well the '95 . . . but that is a special case.

Rockss and Fruit (10/28/2005)
(Haut-Brion) This was beautiful with great supple texture and a wonderful femininity. Loads of tar, weedy tobacco and delicate cassis fruit with almost fully resolved tannins and a very long finish. This is an '82 that is rarin' to go.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
