Tasted by super007 on 1/25/2024 & rated 93 points: Best of 2024; 1/1/2024-12/31/2024: Tasted blind

Nose: plenty of old world, burgundy rusticness. But had more bright, dense fruit if you focused (I missed it at first)

This was fantastic.

High alcohol for PN, close to 15% as I recall (222 views)
Tasted by jimmythesaint on 10/19/2016: Drank my last bottle of this wine and it did not disappoint. Color started to fade with hints of dried cherries, baking spices with a slight medicinal edge. Nicely balanced and enjoyed this with Duck breast and leg in a cherry sauce. Perfect match. If you like your Pinots with some age, I'd give this even a few more years to play out. (3788 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 7/6/2015 & rated 84 points: Bright cherry red. Nose is pure eau de vie de framboise - not raspberry fruit, but high test alcohol. I have never been a fan of this vintage at KB and this one follows suit. Too alcoholic. My favorite KB single vineyard, but not tonight. (84) (4460 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 6/14/2015 & rated 94 points: Crimson in color. 14.9% ABV. Gorgeous nose of dark fruits, brown sugar and cloves. Wonderful fruit held in balance by the right amount of acidity. Nice grip on the palate. Flavors of black cherry, baking spices and sarsaparilla. The finish is long and toasty. Really nice showing from a vintage that many proclaimed would not bode well for Kosta Browne over the long term. Drink over the next year or two. (4427 views)
Tasted by nfafoglia on 4/12/2015 & rated 89 points: Color is medium red with strawberries and cola on the palate. Nose of earth and red licorice. A bit past its prime with some oxidation. (4518 views)
Tasted by Mike V on 5/13/2014 flawed bottle: Corked (5592 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 4/20/2014 & rated 93 points: This was holding up quite well with aromas of strawberry, cherry, brown sugar and flowers. This was quite balanced and not super charged like some of the other KB's but definitely California. Displayed flavors of strawberry, cherry, sarsaparilla, and herb. Wasn't sure how the 2006's would hold up but this is aging quite nicely although I still prefer KB's with only 2-3 years of age on them. (3473 views)
Tasted by Screameagle on 4/9/2014 & rated 89 points: An overpriced wine from a weak vintage. Just one more left. (2769 views)
Tasted by addage on 2/10/2014: - Garnet color. (2917 views)
Tasted by Uglypinga on 10/23/2013: This is ok. It's got a good nose of berries and meat but the palate is a bit disjointed. Not a good year for Kb and it shows but a nice drink no less. (3173 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 8/24/2013 & rated 92 points: Delicious, rich, highly concentrated dark strawberry/black raspberry fruit, showed bottle age but disappointed wine wasn't more expansive (2676 views)
Tasted by dmatley on 7/7/2013 & rated 86 points: Big jammy profile but flat on the midpalate and finish. Wasnt especially hot just flat and not interesting. Waited too long to drink this one. (2535 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 5/25/2013 & rated 93 points: Huge rich nose of red berry, cola, vanilla, spice and cloves. Palate is richly fruited but exceptionally juicy, poised and fresh. Chock full of red berry and spice flavor. Long spice-filled finish. You know what you're getting with KB, and this delivers 110%. Delicious. While this is big and rich, the wine holds it's balance and never feels heavy or cloying. (2677 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 3/30/2013 & rated 93 points: In a great spot right now and just bursting with lush delicious flavor. Nose is full of black cherry, cola and toast notes. Palate is richly fruited with with vanilla, spice and cola notes. Seamless across the mid-palate into a long, lifted finish. Delicious. (2790 views)
Tasted by tanglenet on 3/10/2013: No formal notes as we were entertaining. In the sweet spot right now. Very Good. (2779 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 2/8/2013 & rated 93 points: WIML93

Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately. Followed over about two hours.

Dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of black berries, black cherries and a bit of plums. Flavors of black berries, plums and a bit of currant. Medium acidity, medium tannin, full bodied. Drink or hold. Pretty tasty right now! (2792 views)
Tasted by Screameagle on 1/4/2013 & rated 90 points: A very nice Pinot but certainly not worth the tariff. I've not been a fan of the 2006 kbs and this wine is no exception. (2901 views)
Tasted by Barry Notes on 12/31/2012 & rated 90 points: PnP w/1 hr splash decant. Clear, med purple/ruby red color. Typical and classic big KB Pinot nose. I was not as impressed w/this vintage compaired to the 05. It had the usual Kanzler power but seemed a bit heavy and rough around the edges. Certainly a very good wine just slightly disjointed. Dark fruit, some cola, some tannins, cab like. Very possible that it just needed more air time to open up. Nothing really off. $81 w/tax, shipping. (2709 views)
Tasted by daniel.jay on 8/19/2012 & rated 92 points: Drank with an hour decant. Showed a hint of bricking. Very good, but not exceptional. More restrained than other KB's. Beautiful nose, palate dominated by savory notes and earth/funk as opposed to cherry/strawberry. Nicely balanced, good acidity, well integrated alcohol. (2861 views)
Tasted by Knicksfan on 8/13/2012 & rated 93 points: Time has really favored this wine - really complex, integrated and well balanced (2788 views)
Tasted by TwistedArmadillo on 7/7/2012 & rated 93 points: Rich nose of candid tobacco, and cherry with chewy cola palate with a hint of cedar and a very nice finish. (2694 views)
Tasted by daniel.jay on 5/26/2012 & rated 93 points: Pop and pour at restaurant - which was a shame. This wine didn't start to open for 30 min, then continued to bloom into lush strawberries, cherries, baking spice. Great acidity, balance. (2698 views)
Tasted by Knicksfan on 5/12/2012 & rated 93 points: Lovely Cali PN - awesome fruit but nicely balanced. (2708 views)
Tasted by TwistedArmadillo on 3/3/2012 & rated 93 points: Not at the 05 level, but an outstanding wine. A little more cherry on nose and palate than the 05. After sitting for 30 min or so, the alcohol diminished and the wine opened up very nicely. (3006 views)
Tasted by tederf on 2/19/2012 & rated 90 points: Very nice. Cola, red cherry, and a bit of spice. Time to drink up. (3114 views)
Tasted by lewrose@gmail.com on 12/31/2011: Drinking Beautifully. (3615 views)
Tasted by Lax on 12/23/2011 & rated 91 points: My style preference has changed since I purchased these KB's, but this was still a good pinot. Entering a steady drinking state and chosen as best from a blind flight of 4 pinots by 3/4 tasters. Nose of red cherry, some of the typical KB cola, and a slight sweetness. Probably my favorite of the 2006 SVD's, but I chalk that up to timing of consumption as much as anything. (3574 views)
Tasted by mattyboy76 on 12/8/2011 & rated 93 points: Love this high octane style of pinot. Cherry on the nose with cola notes too. Same on the palate and big, big. Can't get enough of this, .but I agree with those who say the 06's are ready now. (3685 views)
Tasted by shaferguy91 on 11/28/2011 & rated 92 points: Not decanted. (4022 views)
Tasted by Bacchant on 11/24/2011 & rated 93 points: A bit lighter in color than many CA Pinots I have had. True garnet, with a clear ruby hue. Unremarkable nose, apart from a little fresh cranberry. Light to medium bodied. Never over-oaked. Palate exhibits great purity & depth of fruit, which is never over-blown. Some spicy flavors emerge early, along with some tangy acidity through the mid-palate. That said, the finish IS remarkable. Perhaps unlike any other bottle of CA Pinot I've ever tasted, the back of this vino blossoms into a grogeous crescendo of spice, tannin, oak & fruit. Nothing overstated to call it Explosive...Beautifully balanced wine. [14.9% abv.; $87.50]. (3717 views)
Tasted by KenK on 10/29/2011 & rated 94 points: Sweet cherry cola nose, good intensity to the nose with floral note.
Ripe soft rich balanced red cruits with creamy appeal. Good acid backbone and nice length. A pure wine all about fun and yummy flavors, not too serious, but fun. (4257 views)
Tasted by CRAUBER4242 on 10/24/2011 & rated 93 points: Needed 1+ hours of air to reveal a nice creamy nose of red fruit leading to a velvety mouth of red fruit. Nice intensity of fruit for an '06. Best '06 I've had, as the only '06 I have not had is the 4B which I will enjoy in the next few months. (3959 views)
Tasted by rralls on 10/23/2011 & rated 91 points: One of the better 06 pinots I've had to date, but was still oushined byt the same vintage Aubert UV. (3826 views)
Tasted by CADomer on 9/16/2011 & rated 93 points: Similar notes to previous bottle, but this one seemed even better. Beautiful wine and a pure joy to drink. (3999 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 8/27/2011 & rated 93 points: As delicious as the last bottle! (3732 views)
Tasted by g-man on 7/9/2011 & rated 90 points: Drank over a few hours. Great depth of flavor but retained a certain astringency that definately held it back. Regardless, it is a full throttle pinot that is pleasurable to drink now or wait another few years. (4179 views)
Tasted by CADomer on 7/3/2011 & rated 92 points: Opens with that classic beautiful KB nose, full of perfumed fruit. The palate wasn't as full and rich as previous vintages, but that certainly isn't a bad thing. It showed the progression of the winery towards a more refined style while still being true to it's foundation of being a 'tasty beverage.' Great. (4397 views)
Tasted by shk5157 on 6/26/2011 & rated 92 points: Big yet soft fruit (4290 views)
Tasted by gunnm on 6/4/2011 & rated 94 points: Flowery nose hits you right away - very nice sweet cherries and almost no heat on this wonderful wine. Medium to long finish. (4512 views)
Tasted by mattdathan on 4/9/2011 & rated 91 points: We drank this before a DuMol Pinot (Aidan) and it came off second in the comparison. Refined and complex, this seemed to lack a full body implying it may have passed it's prime. That said, it's still a great Pinot worthy of a special occasion! (4523 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 4/1/2011 & rated 93 points: As delicious as the last bottle! (4511 views)
Tasted by caboychuck on 3/14/2011: Cranberry and pomegranate with a little citrus zest on the nose. Delicious cherry, cranberry, pomegranate, nice acidty with a long finish. (5698 views)
Tasted by budman on 2/13/2011 & rated 93 points: Best 06 KB so far. Sweet cherries. No heat. Good stuff. (4944 views)
Tasted by pelwart on 2/6/2011 & rated 96 points: Decanted for over an hour, it opened up very nicely. It is definitely a food wine, not to be confused with a patio pinot. (4818 views)
Tasted by AWei on 1/28/2011 & rated 85 points: Alcohol 14.9%. Popped and poured. Dark ruby color. Red fruit on the nose, some spice and vanilla with a medium finish. Overall, one dimensional with dominating alcohol. Overpriced for what it is. (4987 views)
Tasted by jimmythesaint on 1/22/2011: This wine was a 10. Drank with about an hour of air time. Lush nose with long finish. This wine was very versatile. It went well with our dinner of duck confit and Loch Duart Salmon at Nick's on Main. For dessert, we had diced strawberries with aged balsamic vinegar and blue cheese. It paired nicely with the blue cheese as well. (4840 views)
Tasted by tanglenet on 1/15/2011: Opened and not decanted. Dark black fruit with orange zest and maybe kumquat. Good +

Better on Day 2. Some cola, black licorice and sour cherry with a bit of heat on the finish. Very Good. (4939 views)
Tasted by jshufelt on 1/7/2011 & rated 92 points: Decanted for one hour before service. In the glass, clear, dark ruby red. On the nose, nutmeg, cinnamon, plums, and cherries. On the palate, a smooth mix of dark cherries, spice, and a touch of minerality, followed by a medium finish, with a mild touch of tannins and a very slight alcoholic note. A couple more years in the cellar won't hurt, but this isn't all that far off from its peak. (4666 views)
Tasted by Javier on 1/1/2011 & rated 95 points: Wow! What a treat. Silky and full of flavors. (4527 views)
Tasted by KC Bloodlines on 11/10/2010 & rated 90 points: This is head and shoulders above their appellation Pinots. Pretty good acid and great richness. There's nothing subtle about this wine. A little bit of heat at the end. Made to be guzzled. (4777 views)
Tasted by yui on 10/18/2010 & rated 92 points: great kanzler, but overpriced (4800 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 10/14/2010: 14.9% alcohol. Dark cherry color. Expressive, big nose of black cherry, blackberry, cherry pie, vanilla, and baking spice. In the mouth, plush and rich, with overt dark Pinot fruit leading the way, backed up by a plush, earthy spice note, enough acidity to keep focus, and a long, smooth finish marred only by a touch of heat at the back end. Hedonistic and fun for sure. A- (4738 views)
Tasted by markjahnke on 10/1/2010 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured tonight with sushi of all things at Tsukasa…just because we can! We were craving a big, fruit forward pinot noir tonight, and we have a ton of the ’06 Kosta Browne’s in the cellar, so why not as I am trying to drink through the entire lineup by the end of the year, just to say we have had one of each. Typical gorgeous redish/ruby color in the glass, and a typical Kosta Browne nose. For whatever reason, this wine seemed a to have a bit more of the floral aromatics than some of the other vineyards from Kosta Browne. Tons of great strawberry and raspberry, on the nose, with of course some black cherry and cherry cola as well. The floral notes came in as well, with some hints of rose petal and lavender. Who doesn't like the nose on these wines? On the palate, to me, this wine still seems young. Call me crazy, but I think this wine is still going to get better. More cherry and cola on the palate, with a nice berry medley as well. There is definitely some alcohol here that still needs to integrate, but it is not overpowering in the least. I'd give it another year or so, and it will integrate nicely. Nice spice though, with some hints of cinnamon and tea. The shining star however on the palate is the cherry, and that is not a bad thing in the least. Nice pleasant finish, but again, the alcohol just needs a bit of time to integrate. Even so, this was delicious with all kinds of fruit oozing from everywhere. Gotta love fruit from Kanzler! 92 points! (4460 views)
Tasted by cadamson on 9/5/2010 & rated 85 points: I always struggle with what to say about these. Kanzler is a great vineyard for KB, about the only one I can tolerate any longer. Yes, it has cola, spice, dark berries, blah, blah, blah...I think the only thing that saves these from the fate of the other KB offerings is a bit of acidity seems to always exist to make these Kanzlers more than a one hit wonder. 2006 is not a good year for KB, and while this is better than others, it is no exception. It is a gawky wine, unsure of what it wants to be or become. Taste is okay, just everything does not seem in balance. It is awkward, and bigger than its bones can support. (4615 views)
Tasted by mbharris on 7/19/2010: A little hot to start, but mellowed out after 1/2 hour and very nice. Not "amazing" by any means, but a very good bottle of wine. (4902 views)
Tasted by mmurmac on 6/10/2010 & rated 96 points: Stellar. I wish this stuff never ran out. bright cherries, mineral and cola on the nose. It was so balanced, lively, and just delicous. Layers of cherry, cranberry and (for me) just the right touch of earth and mineral. Those accents just made it dance. (5510 views)
Tasted by jasonh on 6/4/2010 & rated 88 points: Hmmmm... did not find the joy I found in this wine last year. The goopy over-ripe mid palate really stood out this time. Still good for a glass and fairly pure but not much balance. Is the fruit starts to relent, the oak is becoming more dominating. A tremendous big pinot but it really needs to be at the right place at the right time. (5161 views)
Tasted by kennyg on 5/30/2010 & rated 89 points: Light to medium red, muted nose. Cherry and spice with pleasant midpalate. Good sipping wine but hot finish and limited acidity do not complement food well (4852 views)
Tasted by Acohen on 5/23/2010 & rated 92 points: Great garnet color and very nice cherry nose. Big cherry on the palate with cola, spice, earth and baking spice on the long finish. (4565 views)
Tasted by mmurmac on 5/8/2010 & rated 97 points: This was soooo good. Bright red fruits and a hint of earth exploded from the glass on the nose. It danced though the mid palate all in balance. Beautiful fruit and a touch of tea. Looooong finish. A touch of mineral. Winner of the night. (4641 views)
Tasted by Rob MacKay on 5/1/2010 & rated 91 points: A little bit harsh tonight. Seemed to come off kinda big and edgy. There's lots of great elements in this wine but at the moment they are a little bit discombobulated. Time in the glass did help and eventually it started to shake down into your typical KB wine. I suspect this one needs some time to come around but there is a lot of potential, which is what my score is based on. (4529 views)

Tasted by thomaskeil on 4/11/2010 & rated 90 points: PnP. Deep garnet. Strawberry/cherry and great bouquet of spices on leather. Honeyed fruit on palate entry that carries rich layering fruit, but lacks finesse or any real tensioning mineral/acid. Pretty sure that this will last a few years, but not get much better.  Tasted by muredskin14 on 3/18/2010 & rated 94 points: I have an affinity for the KB '06s and this one is no different. They are still fuller bodied, beautifully rich and with great straw- and raspberry fruit across the pallet as other vintages. But what I love about the 06s is that they have finesse. This sometimes missing from these full bore wines. Can't say I favor Kanzler KB over other ones this vintage, rather all their Sonoma releases in '06 share many of the same similar, fantastic qualities. (3867 views)
Tasted by JOJ on 3/7/2010 & rated 94 points: Excellent. Luscious nose of wild berries, clove, cinnamon, and flowers. Palate continues the wild berry / red fruit theme, with juicy raspberry showing through, complimented by a note of baking spices. Well balanced. Not hot at all. Almost delicate (relatively speaking, for a KB). (3928 views)
Tasted by Saul on 2/28/2010 & rated 89 points: A winner for sure. Excellent nose, powerful berry fragrance, followed by a wine that was well integrated with a great finish. Not a bombshell of a pinot noir, but a very solid wine. (4006 views)
Tasted by Mr Cabernet on 2/21/2010 & rated 95 points: This is what KB is all about. Much more than I was expecting. Perhaps my favorite KB ever. (4318 views)
Tasted by glg on 2/13/2010 & rated 91 points: I think this is still too young. Decent showing, but some tannic grip that suggests the wine will improve with more bottle age. Very powerful nose also suggests this has the stuffing and weight to go many more years. (4026 views)
Tasted by dontime on 12/31/2009 & rated 93 points: New Year's Eve at Monterey Bay with Vinnie, Patty, Rick, Leslie and Carol. Purchased from wine list after we finished a bottle of 05 Sea Smoke Southing that I brought. Bigger and bolder than the Sea Smoke, but not as complex, with lots of cherry, raspberry and other red fruit. Nice balance with a smooth, lingering finish. (3836 views)
Tasted by torcams on 11/26/2009 & rated 93 points: Incredible aromatics - flowers, spice, cherry fruit. Great overall balance and complexity in a lighter style typical of the 2006 vintage for KB. Not the blockbuster style of the 2005s. (3815 views)
Tasted by MCUBEB on 10/24/2009 & rated 93 points: Drank it over three days and the wine improved each day. It is a full throtle pinot with big red fruit flavors that are focused. There are some notes of flowers and spices which get overshadowed by fruit. This will definitely improve with some age. (3958 views)
Tasted by mebydef on 10/5/2009 & rated 94 points: Very primary and focused wine with great intensity. This should loosen up in the next couple of years gaining more complexity and elegance. Currently the layers of flowers, minerals, dark berries and, dare I say, licorice are bound very tightly together There is good length here. It's a bit hot, so serve cool. (3699 views)
Tasted by gorm on 10/2/2009 & rated 94 points: Dark red. Delicious and intense nose of cherry, raspberries, cola, spices and juniper. Long, great balance and intensity with the most complex array of tastes of the 06 KB's tasted so far. (3475 views)
Tasted by kris.h on 9/20/2009 & rated 91 points: Dark red. Quite an intense nose. Lots going on. Picking of aromas of cherry, leather, and spices. There's an underlying darkness to the aromas that make me think Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The palate has moderate acidity with smooth fine grained tannins. Finishes a little gritty with some spicy alcohol. On the second day the alcohol on the finish is toned down. Overall it's a big ripe CA Pinot that offers up some interesting flavors and shows good complexity. I'm not sure how this will age but it should be good for at least another 3 to 5 years.  Tasted by jasonh on 5/22/2009 & rated 92 points: Had at Michaels On Naples with the AIR boys.
I thought this was drinking very well. Full aromatics and full flavor. Everyone at the table loved this. Nice way to start the night off. The massive dark fruit was nicely in balance. Just enough red berries and acidity to keep it far from sloppy land. Long finish and although we didn't spend a lot of time with this wine, I didn't notice any heat or overt alcohol. This was drained very fast. This is a perfect one glass wine for my palate. I will probably open another bottle fairly soon. (3510 views)

Tasted by swp3 on 11/29/2008 & rated 94 points: Mid-palate too forceful, too sharp, even after a few hours of air. Flavor profile is black cherry, raspberry, chocolate, mocha and then dried cherry. Hints of creamy texture to come and even though they're a little unproportioned, the flavors surround your mouth in a great way. Will be a lot better in 6 months. (4187 views)

Tasted by Winetex on 2/9/2008: Tasted at the 2nd Annual Freeman Caves Dinner for VinoCellar.com - (Sonoma area, California). No rating as these have only been in bottle two weeks (bottled late Jan 08). Dark clear ruby color with big oak, spice and a candied note. Remarkably smooth for just being bottled and with very little perceptible heat on the finish. Less heat in these wines is a positive for the development of the wine IMHO. A bruiser like the Kanzlers have been in the past. (4938 views)

2006 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Kanzler Vineyard

Aromas of A complex array of fresh blueberry, blackberry and raspberry fruit grab your attention with a slight hint of orange blossom and mineral. On the palate, piercing ripe currants, juicy blackberry and sweet dark cherries with traces of cedar and dust. Thick and juicy on the midpalate with supportive, mouthwatering acidity. All of which leads to a long, bracing finish with a touch of minerality.

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Kanzler Vineyard

Kanzler Vineyard began in 1996 as the dream of Steve and Lynda Kanzler. The vineyard location is near the edge of the Petaluma Gap land channel known as the Sebastopol Hills, which is a microclimate characterized by morning and evening fog, breezy afternoons and bright, but mild afternoon sun. The cooler temperatures allow for an extended hang time and produce grapes of uncommon intensity and complexity. The Kanzler Vineyard is usually the last Pinot Noir vineyard we harvest. The gently sloping vineyard is a former apple orchard, near the town of Sebastopol. Consisting of clones 115, 667 and Pommard, this vineyard delivers complexity, strength and purity, along with wines exhibiting a sensuous mouth feel. Kosta Browne's first vintage of Kanzler Vineyard was in 2002.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
