Dark purple in the glass, no bricking or aging notes colorwise. Nose was a tad muted but had sweet dark red/black fruit notes prevalent. The palate was full of smooth, integrated dark red fruit, great depth and concentration. It's fully integrated and in its window. I don't know if it gets any better from here. Another perfect while. Tannins nicely integrated, but still a little chewy. Unlike the Shafer from the night before, this wine had some darker fruit flavor. No sign of burnout, could easily have aged 5-10 more, who knows. Very pleased since the last bottle I'd tasted was flawed. Wow, was this good. I like this one slightly better than the 2007 Shafer Hillside Select, whereas Joe preferred the Shafer. Hard to go wrong, 2 beautiful wines. (1371 views) | |

This is everything I expected from To-Kalon fruit, but the wine is still very young, and perhaps still in a little bit of an awkward phase. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Thick legs. Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of sweet coconut oak, cassis, black licorice, sweet spices, sweet earth, mocha, black cherries. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, highly commendable hardly noticeable high alcohol (15.3%!), very smooth and exceptionally soft cotton-like high tannins, concentrated full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of coconut oak, sweet spices, cassis, black licorice, mocha, black cherries, blackberries, blackcurrant. Seamlessly smooth mouth-feel on the mid-palate. Long finish with the lingering soft bouncy tannins. No alcohol heat! Or maybe the full on concentration just distracts you from it? Outstanding quality. So this is what To-Kalon is about. Extremely rich concentrated ripe fruit style, but commendably I would consider this not overly done. Not like some Aussie monsters that veer into Amarone-like raisinated or even burnt fruit flavour. Lots of obvious oak here that kind of achieves a good balance with the concentrated fruit. I can see this ageing well over the next 10+ years. Last thoughts: How does a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon achieve such softness of the tannin? Soft tannin is just such an un-Cabernet characteristic. (2843 views) | |

Pop and pour, incredible youthful pitch black fruits, crmes de cassis, licorice, menthol which I assume reflecting high % alcohol, dark spices, lead pencil, noticeable oak, liquid smoke and earth. With air, it comes together nicely. Exceptional concentration, somewhat monolithic and dense, intense cassis fruit driven palate impression, noticeable but fine tannins and long finish. This is Cab equivalent of the high end Saxum. Clearly those who love and those who hate. It is a really impressive young wine. There is a good freshness so I hope it will age well. At first it was a fierce wall of tannin and alcohol, with hints of fruit and a huge finish. As this opened up the complexity unwound into currants, bing cherry, mocha, with beams of graphite and spice. At it's best this had a good attack which lead to a superbly fine middle palate that was elegant, but persistent and concentrated, not weighty. The finish sailed on for a minute plus, outstanding. Initial nose was wet gravel, tons of stony mineral. After serving, the gravel element had been supplanted by powerful, sappy shrub leaves, as if it contained freshly-cut overgrowth of green weeds and herbs. Behind this strong note was concentrated cassis and dark red fruit, heavy cream, asphalt, and smoke.
