Tasted by speedywine on 12/28/2023 & rated 93 points: Fantastic wine despite it was a little bit too chilled. NB: I love Pessac-Leognan... (966 views)
Tasted by NBouras915 on 12/24/2023 & rated 93 points: Purchased recently as a one off. Very nice. Fully mature and ready to go after a one hour decant. (841 views)
Tasted by Tgood on 12/21/2023: 55F since acquiring on release - youthful red black - smoke and graphite and soy - savory AF - tannins both silky velvet and powdery fine - nice wine particularly for charred meats like this lamb (883 views)
Tasted by JulianSkeels on 11/21/2023 & rated 93 points: Lovely ash, tobacco, cedar and new leather nose. Bit light in the mouth but with lovely gravel and mineral finish. Come across that it’s a touch green but the oak has morphed into a lovely nose. A clear notch down from the 2000 rendition and couple of notches from the excellent 1998. Really enjoyable though. Drink now, it didn’t need air and there isn’t much depth of fruit. 93pts (1157 views)
Tasted by Invest on 11/20/2023 & rated 93 points: 13% Alc., natural cork, 5% soaked, still strong dark purpur red color with no ageing reflexes.

Nose: Smell of beautiful matured Bdx.

Palate: Very good freshness, good balance, ripe heart cherry to sour cherry, melty black chocolate, wine doesn't show tiredness, pleasant tones of ripeness and secondary aromas. Bottle was quite fast emptied.

Give it 1h in the decanter! That's what you desire when you drink well stored matured Bdx. Unfortunately my last bottle. (1106 views)
Tasted by Beachfan on 10/21/2023: Not my style (751 views)
Tasted by hkbob on 10/8/2023 & rated 93 points: From magnum. Showing some signs of age with lightening around the rim and some more tertiary notes appearing on the smoky, sous-bois and cedar-infused nose. Soft as velvet through the mid-palate with some fruit remaining. Just lacking a bit of structure and the length, breadth and depth on the finish to make this more interesting. An enjoyable bottle for sure, just not to the same level as one enjoyed a year ago. Drink 'em if you've got 'em as I can't see further upside from here, IMO. (713 views)
Tasted by ONEFIVE on 9/24/2023: PnP
Nose of dark fruit, tobacco, wet soil, cedar, and spice.
Med body, med- acidity, med- tannin.
This is sugning now. All elements are in line.
I would enjoy this Joe and over the next 10 years. (895 views)
Tasted by Chrysostomus on 9/5/2023 & rated 93 points: „Very classical“, that was in my mind during the drinking experience over 2 days with this one. Typical aromas of tobacco, wet earth and leaves, pencil shavings. Good structure and fine tannins on the palate. Not the most powerful wine but refined and in a perfect window now! 92-93 (1002 views)
Tasted by Pinot Peter on 7/14/2023: Nose of cassis/ dk berry. On my palate I first get a smokiness, then a sweetness that fills the palate and gives this wine good length. This is not a heavy wine but is packed with great flavours. Leather, tobacco, dk chocolate, dark berry to name a few. This softens and gains complexity as you finish the bottle. Excellent wine! A pleasure to drink. (1188 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 6/30/2023 & rated 95 points: it has been a long time since I had this. I remember it just like it was. A lighter, may be a touch diluted (like so often in 2001) version of the amazing 2000. Excellent aromas of farmyard funk, dark fruit, forest floor. Aroma 96+, palate 94, quite light and a touch too much acidity for the fruit. At peak now, drink up. (1735 views)
Tasted by nectar14 on 5/24/2023 & rated 94 points: Really beautiful bottle drinking very well, still with many years Still ahead of it. Solid acidity, lots of wonderful gravel scents. Drink or hold (1145 views)
Tasted by ayalao3 on 4/28/2023 & rated 92 points: Probably an off bottle. Past peak with a bit of VA (1323 views)
Tasted by MRichman on 4/14/2023: Fantastic. Great solid dark fruit. Good secondary herbal flavors. This is in a great place, hitting just perfectly. Drink or hod 10 years. (1190 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 11/13/2022 & rated 93 points: This is a terrific wine. Thank goodness after the past bottle which was all leather and no pleasure. Certainly a wine that is full of stewy, game and tobacco notes. Yet it’s mixed deliciously with black current and dark berry fruit. Masculine, stony finish. An old school claret that has nothing in common with recent vintages from this Chateau. Lots of tobacco on the finish. I like it. (93) (2152 views)
Tasted by hkbob on 11/12/2022 & rated 95 points: Explosive nose right out of the gate with lots of cedar, red currant, bacon fat, autumn leaves, fresh loam. Wonderful palate which mirrored the aromatics, well-rounded entry and lush on the mid-palate. This was drinking younger than other recent bottles with some tannins still to be resolved. Honestly, to my taste, the QPR on this wine is off-the-charts. Another "why I love Bordeaux" experience. (1801 views)
Tasted by Mbbarros on 10/11/2022 & rated 95 points: Four years latter, the same wine, at the same restaurant. The 2001 evolved well since 2018, and I believe It is at the peak of its evolution. If you have any bottles left of this beauty, you should open it now! (1960 views)
Tasted by ONEFIVE on 9/5/2022: Clean on the nose. Dried dark red fruit, tobacco, new leather, cedar, and vanilla.
On the palate this is wonderful. Medium body, medium acid, and light tannin. This is very refined and just slightly tart on the finish. Olenty of time left but this is great now. Drink over the next 10 years. (1892 views)
Tasted by Dibbs on 8/9/2022 & rated 92 points: Needs a lot of air. 1.5hrs in the decanter but only after about an hour in the glass to fully reveal itself. The pedigree is there but this felt like a classic BDX; nothing to write home about or any flaw that I could pick out. Didn't really speak to me but solid wine nonetheless. (2337 views)
Tasted by MRichman on 6/19/2022: Wow, freaking awesome. Full, juicy, almost lush, but still muscular and firm. Fruit is very dark with lots of iron and minerals and earth. Menthol. Gret depth. Powerful but also pretty. But mostly powerful. This is fully mature with great structure and feel. Drink now and over the next 10-15 years. Excellent. (1597 views)
Tasted by acc_123 on 5/29/2022 & rated 95 points: This was singing - really beautiful wine. Deep and rich nose of dark fruit and tobacco. Round and balanced on the palate with a loooong finish (1621 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 5/22/2022 & rated 86 points: I want to love this wine. Past bottles have been glorious and I love Pessac’s made in this style. Full garnet color. The nose is wonderful and classic: tobacco leaf, leather, red fruit and cut weeds. A touch green. Medium weight. There is some nice initial fruit but the leather and green structure take over quickly. Unexpected. Hopefully just an off bottle. Ok only. (86) (1606 views)
Tasted by jmoon on 2/12/2022 & rated 92 points: Solid showing, classic old school style, fattened out with age, showing basement and leather, smothers the fruit a little, saline tang coming through which added some freshness, probably more leather and cedar than I’d prefer. First One or maybe two glasses are good, then a bit tiresome at the three hour mark. No Decant, peaked at 2 hrs. (2093 views)
Tasted by egoya on 2/11/2022 & rated 90 points: Last of 3 bottles. Quite nice, but nonetheless disappointing in view of the high ratings of all the professional experts. (1675 views)
Tasted by Shugs_Claret on 12/27/2021 & rated 91 points: A touch of bricking. Red fruits dominate the nose with hints of loam and mint. Palate is well rounded. Fine tannins which persist a bit. Medium finish.

Not as opulent as the 09, 10 or 15. Classically built and enjoyable now.

Fades after 24 hours of slow ox. (1932 views)
(2477 views)
Tasted by Pinot Peter on 7/7/2021: Excellent wine. exhibits smoke, graphite, dark cherry, cassis, plum and slight vegetal flavours. A dense wine ,darker in colour, long finish that ends with a beautiful sweetness on the palate. Still going strong. A pleasure to drink. (2608 views)
Tasted by Jdwinedrinker on 6/5/2021: very good with nice fruit and tobacco, earthy notes. Didn't really need or benefit from decanting. Not sure this gets better? Would be interested in what others think. I have another case or so....

Cheers (2379 views)
Tasted by devraj on 6/2/2021 & rated 93 points: Still a youthful dark reddish purple in color. Initially a bit funky odor right on opening that blows off over 20 mins after decanting to reveal cedar, graphite, dark berries/cassis, charcoal embers. Medium to full bodied palate shows silky sweet dark red/purple berries, hint of mocha, smoky tobacco, good acidity, firm tannins and a very long finish. (2343 views)
Tasted by Blauweiss on 2/13/2021 & rated 94 points: Amazing classic BDX-feeling from this cooler vintage. Perfectly ripe by now, still with rich cassis fruit, leadpencil, leather, tar. Long and smooth, balanced and complex. Simply gorgeous! (2854 views)
Tasted by RED AND BLACK on 1/31/2021 & rated 93 points: Still in good shape and with years ahead. Fully mature, tannins are integrated, great bordeaux classic nose, nice fruit and density in the mouth. Love it! (2432 views)
Tasted by Invest on 1/29/2021 & rated 93 points: PnP, very good and classic Bordeaux. Fantastic bright Bordeaux red color, on the nose the same classic impressions. On the palate smooth, very good and precise cherry fruit, harmonious acidity, very good drinking flow, medium finish. BUT a bit of wood flavors and a slightly dark taste from the still noticeable toasting prevent a higher rating. Overall a classic and delicious Bordeaux drinking experience. As always 2001 doesn't disappoint. (2318 views)
Tasted by chefdilletante on 1/1/2021: Elegant typicity: Gravelly and crunchy. Ripe fruit but not stewed; plum and cassis. Just a bit of leafiness. Tobacco and sous bois. Hard to imagine it getting better than this—so beautiful now, consider pulling the cork. (2159 views)
Tasted by Frank Schneider on 10/26/2020 & rated 96 points: Thats bordeaux ! All in ! Drink ! (2747 views)
Tasted by Bugiman on 10/14/2020 & rated 98 points: Eine sensationelle Flasche. Bereits der Duft ist betörend, der Abgang hat eine wunderbare tertiärere Note. (2214 views)
Tasted by bordeauxmartini on 9/20/2020 & rated 93 points: 2001s just never disappoint for me. It’s a year that has many happy memories for me so I’m a bit biased. Classic Bordeaux that is now drinking at its peak. Some fruit, good tertiary characteristics. Really enjoyed it. (2385 views)
Tasted by VINNICK on 8/9/2020 & rated 94 points: Another Outstanding showing for an “off year”. This is one of may favorite off vintage bottles along maybe with maybe the 98. Lovely notes of everything you can expect from good BDX. (2504 views)
Tasted by Jdwinedrinker on 3/28/2020: This is drinking very nicely. Still primary fruit but very smooth and lovely. (3128 views)
Tasted by skifree on 2/28/2020 & rated 95 points: Wow, this is drinking so beautifully right now! This alluring mixture of fruit rouge, green olives, and this saline note through the core. This is not in-your-face, but very elegant and classic. (3023 views)
Tasted by jordanj on 2/7/2020 & rated 93 points: Delicious! At a great place right now. Everything you could ask for in a Grave with a little age. Enough fruit, smokey terroir and a hint of funk. Well balanced. Tannins and oak well integrated. Maybe a little light and dusty. Regardless, went down a little to easy. No need to wait on these but will continue to improve for a few years and drink well for another 7-10. 93 + (3037 views)
Tasted by VINNICK on 12/13/2019 & rated 94 points: Everything good bordeaux should be. Preferred over the 98 and 95, which I own more of than this. Terrific for an “off vintage”. Drinking beautifully now. (3354 views)
Tasted by MRichman on 11/11/2019: Wow, drinking great. A real treat. (3352 views)
Tasted by JJYoyo on 9/27/2019 & rated 94 points: 2.5 hr decant. Nose full of blackberry, cherry, saddle leather, cigar box. About an hour into it a lovely violet aroma crept in. Palate had strong minerality, dark berry and dark stone fruit, dark chocolate. Lots of very fine tannins. About 4 hrs after opening it started to fade/ shut down, So right now I would say a 2 hr decant would be sufficient. Really lovely wine for a 2001.
Score: 94. Relative to expectations: ++. (3261 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 9/22/2019: Vigorous 😉 decant woke this up fast
Nice fruit and good flavors and likely years to go (2891 views)
Tasted by Frank Schneider on 4/21/2019 & rated 96 points: Amazing bordeaux ! Needed 3 h of decanting. Than showed a whole forest bunch. Leather, structure, silky finish. The dark berries and big fun. Need more !!! Drink or hold (3626 views)
Tasted by srh on 3/29/2019: Friday Tasting Group: "Killer Bar" (#02 for me) (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): Typically, "50% C.S., 47% Merlot, 2% P.V., & 1% C.F.; Manual destemming berry by berry & use of a sorting table. Transfer into 30-70 hl wooden vats by gravity flow. Low temperature pre-fermentation maceration. Manual punching down. 30-40 day maceration. The wine is run off into FR oak barrels by gravity flow. Malolactic fermentation in oak barrels. Aging for 18 mos in oak barrels."

N: Attractively RIPE frt with minerals, toast, & pyrazines underneath; Intensity lurking

P: Med body; RNDISH entry with LOVELY, ripe, ALMOST swtish frt met by astringent pucker which, without losing contact with the initial frt, slowly evolves into a very, LONG tangy/SWT finish with perhaps OCCASIONAL *hints* of a very, VERY slight bitterness to the dusty tannins. In its window, but I can see it making its 25th. 16 (3x) & 17.5/20 (2x) Jancis Robinson, + numerous other solid reviews listed on wine-searcher's "Tasting Notes" pg. (3421 views)
Tasted by BradA on 3/9/2019 & rated 93 points: Simply sublime—. Gentle tannins a touch of cedar box and a long finish. Exquisite with a butterflied leg of lamb. Perfect pitch to drink now or over the next 5/7 years. (3168 views)
Tasted by MRichman on 1/14/2019: Excellent. In a great place. Good maturity with solid dark fruit, earth, tobacco. Round sweetness, leather. Drink now and over the next 10 years. (3286 views)
Tasted by Marc on 12/31/2018 & rated 92 points: New Year's Eve, 2019 Pokai Parera (Pokai Parera, Ekatahuna, New Zealand): Intense Cabernet - dominant wine, that is drinking really well, in a slightly herbal style. Intense currants, and earthy notes lead to an intense and beautifully delineated finish. Beautiful feathery tennis combine with a clear and pointed acid structure. The warm texture and soft, mellow and ripe mouthfeel of the wine are special features of this excellent 2001. (3570 views)
Tasted by rojoloco on 11/3/2018 & rated 92 points: Delicious, mature bordeaux. Took 15 to 20 minutes to soften up, but then was silky and delicious. Some tannins in the mid palate are still present but quickly fade.
Goes down easy. A lovely bottle. I have one more I will drink within the next year. (2999 views)
Tasted by g-man on 8/31/2018 & rated 89 points: Still rather primary but opened up over 3 hours. Has a very distinctive menthol, minty note to it. I'm not sure how well this will hold up over time. My plan is to drink 2nd bottle at the 10 year mark in 2021 (3498 views)
Tasted by Apollo5710 on 8/4/2018 & rated 93 points: A solid showing! Stored in a climate-controlled cellar since purchase in 2006. Some funky barnyard notes dominated the nose at first, but blew off quickly, at which point it went into a shell for 2-3 hours - it seemed light with not much of a nose during this time. And then, after decanting for 3-4 hours, this Pape Clement came alive to reveal a complex, expressive nose of scorched earth, graphite, cedar, and sour cherry and blackberry fruit. With time, coca and soy further complicate the bouquet, followed by a very smooth and silky textured experience in the mouth. It was never a big, super concentrated, or powerful wine, but very suave and seamless (on the elegant side, I suppose), showcasing earthy flavors of dark fruits, soy, and with time, a touch of chocolate (which lingers on the finish). It did put on significant weight and density at the 4-hour mark (the best glass was the last one), so decanting and patience is a necessity (or give it a few more years). (3728 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 7/30/2018: Decanted for an hour or 2 before dinner and then drunk over a couple of hours. Nicely mature/maturing red in a good spot. Secondary and tertiary starting to show and really nicely evolved. Good soft fruit and really easy to drink. I assume it's more merlot, but whatever, really good and really enjoyed by all (3371 views)
Tasted by rojoloco on 7/16/2018 & rated 93 points: A lovely wine with sufficient age to soften it. Only took 20 minutes or so to hit its stride. Then had that lovely taste of graphite and silky tannins. Still a little tannic bite on the middle palate, fading to back palate as it opened up.
Very good wine. Glad I have one more. (3535 views)
 Tasted by Raizes on 4/29/2018 & rated 91 points: (3667 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 3/7/2018 & rated 94 points: Tasted blind. Left bank Cab with some years on the hip. Thought it could be a good 2000 or 2003 left bank. Learning that it is a 2001 I thought this could be a first or strong second growth given its quality. Dark, smooth, fresh, balanced, very enjoyable. Lots of facets (but still not nearly as complex as the Montrose 03 drank alongside). Nevertheless, a great joy to drink. In such a good place. I will for sure buy some bottles. We popped and poured and it was instantly good. No decant needed. 94 (4045 views)
Tasted by BradA on 12/25/2017 & rated 92 points: A really solid showing from a producer I adore! Popped and left sitting 90 minutes before Christmas dinner. Deep cedar and cigar box aromas mixed with a rich and luxurious palate coating mid palate. The finish showed cool ash and was dynamite! Drink now or thru 2020. (3384 views)
Tasted by devraj on 11/21/2017 & rated 93 points: Deep purplish red in color. Aromas of plums, reddish black berries, new saddle leather, tar and smoky wood. Perfectly medium bodied showing sweet dark crushed berries, bbq wood smoke, good acidity, no tannins and a long finish redolent of perfumed wood and leather. (3590 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 9/23/2017 & rated 95 points: 4th Saturday group uptown tasting (R&D's): Double blind. Deep red color, no bricking. Aromas of red and dark fruit, iodine and roasted herbs- a heavenly bouquet which immediately took me to Graves. Full-bodied, with medium tannins and flavors of iodine/beef blood, red berry fruit and earth. Long finish. Balanced. 95-96 pts. I guessed 2000 Pape Clement.

I don't know how much, if any, air this had before the flight was poured, but this is wonderful now, with a long life ahead- may not necessarily improve, but certainly change/evolve. Now-2030. (4330 views)
Tasted by Frank Schneider on 6/3/2017 & rated 95 points: Drank over 4 h out ofthe big decanter. Needed the air. Developed very well. In the end we had an amazing wine with dark fruits , herbs, tar und a looong silky finish. Will improve even more wth more cellar time95 + (4792 views)
Tasted by MRichman on 5/12/2017: This is really excellent. Great nose. Really nice toasted oak, herb, mint, solid strong red fruit, just a touch of sweetness in the middle and a bit of acid on the finish. Classy toasted French oak. Well rounded, well put together. Drinking great and will go for at least another 10-15 years. (4227 views)
Tasted by CerveloGuy on 3/19/2017: The oak is starting to fade showing lots of dark fruits and earthy flavors. Still tannic and a little tight. Has years ahead of it. (4545 views)
Tasted by Blauweiss on 3/18/2017 & rated 93 points: Fantastic, rich, beautifully balanced bdx. Cassis, fresh herbs, leather. Full bodied, long, fantastic aftertaste. (3998 views)
Tasted by Philip67 on 3/13/2017 & rated 92 points: Quite over powering aroma of oak, rendering the wine with a very dry and quite harsh palate. (3718 views)
 Tasted by k H i L o on 2/22/2017 & rated 90 points: Très joli nez mais pas assez d'élégance en bouche. Trop jeune, peut-être...(?) (2949 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 12/4/2016: 3 hour decant then to restaurant. Wine is remarkably young and dark at 15 and even after a decant. Wonderful earthiness, with some cedar/tobacco but quite a bit of deep dark fruits and continued to evolve and improve with time throughout dinner (3575 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 11/6/2016 & rated 92 points: Lovely wine with excellent depth and long earthy finish. Seems to be at peak as it faded after an hour or so. (3231 views)
Tasted by Dale M on 10/9/2016 & rated 94 points: Decanted 2 hrs. Soooo nice to finally have a Bordeaux that with out question, tastes like a Bordeaux. So many recent vintages have me scratching my head. Aromatically inviting, open aromas of cassis and wood smoke, and a small touch of horse saddle. Dark cherry and the classic Graves 'scorched earth' is really an appropriate descriptor, the fruit is lively and has a great lift in the mouth. Precise and well focused on the finish. I loved this and should drink well for quite some time. (3482 views)
Tasted by jmoon on 9/29/2016 & rated 95 points: Continues to drink brilliantly. Dark blue fruit, perfectly ready now, needs an hour decant. Tasting notes v similar to my last bottle, just a little fatter. Like me. (3655 views)
91 pts (4596 views)
Tasted by XPEDITR on 5/8/2016 & rated 93 points: Amazing wine. Died after 1 hour. Would buy again
Lots of Fruit on the nose the entire time. Chalky plum and dark berries. Rich Flavor but light. (4085 views)
Tasted by djdaqm on 3/19/2016 & rated 93 points: Don's 48th (Home): Decanted and aerated for about 2 hours before drinking. Solid example of aged Bordeaux although maybe a little closed at this point. Some pencil lead and autumn leaves on the nose. More earthy than fruity. Nice balance of acidity, concentration, and flavors. (5130 views)
Tasted by Arcturus on 2/13/2016 & rated 94 points: Oak was prominent at first, needed about 3 hours to integrate then beautiful nose of flowers, graphite, tobacco, black cherry. Elegant and delicious wine. (4559 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 1/21/2016: Graves and Sauternes Dinner (RSJ, Southwark, London): Opaque ruby. Nose shows creamy blackcurrant, blueberry, vanilla - certainly "modern" but not OTT. Medium/full bodied, clean, plush, layers of pastilley black fruit, vanilla, cream, soft on mid-palate with moderate acidity, finish is marred by furry tannin which is concerning for ageability. ***? (4882 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 1/21/2016 & rated 88 points: Graves @ RSJ (RSJ, London): Deep ruby to purple at the core. Plush nose. Plum and tobacco. Certainly padded, but no monstrosity. The tannins are quite dry and increasingly prominent with air though. After an hour in glass, sawdust on the nose. Drink on its youthful fruit before it dries out, I think. ***? (4370 views)
Tasted by djdaqm on 12/25/2015 & rated 95 points: Excellent Pessac. The wine has plenty of structure and complexity. It kept changing and changing as time went on. It gained weight as the night progressed. Food friendly and aristocratic. Still has plenty of life on it. (3740 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 10/10/2015 & rated 95 points: Unfortunately my only bottle but wow is this beauiful! Explosive nose of dark cherries, cassis, toast, sweet spices, scorched earth, some horse saddle and graphite. On the palate there are similar notes. It's medium-full bodied without any heaviness, has still medium-high acidity and medium tannin that is polished. Good and long finish. A beautiful, layered, fresh and elegant wine that's drinking perfectly right now. It's relatively modern in style but super aromatic and polished. (4715 views)
Tasted by Redguy on 8/25/2015 & rated 92 points: Decanted 7 hrs. Fairly big and intense, especially for an '01... This radiates with youthful energy. There is good length and power, no holes or weak spots, and sturdy structure which is supported nicely by fresh acids. Paired well with grilled lamb chops. While not the most complex today, all signs point to a wine with plenty of time left to develop. (4238 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 8/11/2015: Big dark wine....can definitely see some of the negative comments in terms of this being not especially Bdx and certainly ripe and full and barely showing age. 1/2 in fridge 2 days later...will see how it developed (4006 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 5/16/2015 & rated 90 points: My last bottle of this wine. Big graphite and muted fruit which to me caused it to be a bit out of balance but none the less an enjoyable bottle. (4741 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 4/26/2015 & rated 94 points: Tasted Blind - this was a Bordeaux tasting with a Rudd ringer, and I mistook this for the Rudd. The color was deep purple with black ink swirling in the depths - very curious. Sweet purple fruits and violet floral notes on the nose. Double-decanted, but still tight with raspberries along with vanillin on the finish. Delicious, and the wine of the night according to the group. (4487 views)

On palate, medium bodied and elegant mouth-feels, exhibits earth, blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, some herbaceous notes and subtle tobacco. Some hints of sweetness showing good ripeness from the fruits. Long lingering finish with fine chewy tannins. Drinking very well now but it will continue to improve. (3933 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 4/1/2015 & rated 89 points: Hmmm. Will this knit together? I'm not sure - today it was disjointed and rough. Coarse, heavy extraction with too much new oak for its own good. Almost Californian in its composition. It has a bawdy kind of appeal, but the Pessac isn't really coming through here and that's a problem. So if all of this ruckus integrates and lets Pessac character come through, it might work. But I wouldn't bet good money on it. (4258 views)

Dark fruit and tobacco notes more dominant; leather and tobacco on the palate. Guessed 2000 Bordeaux. 94-95 pts.

At first, I'd not have guessed Pessac. I had set a glass aside though, and by the end of the second flight, the wine developed a dominant tell-tale road tar/scorched earth note. Just fantastic. Still a few years from peak drinking I think...perhaps 2019+. 95+ pts. (5491 views)

After Parker and Quarin rated this "same or better" than the 2000 I stoked up and never regretted it. Pape Clement, like many Pessac-Leognans, has a very special aromatic profile. Toast, smoke, forest floor, horse saddle, dark fruit, you either like it or not but you will never scold this wine for being bland/boring. I often serve this wine blind with guests, also next to first growths and it always keeps up. Delicious, medium body. (4998 views)
Tasted by acb on 1/12/2013 & rated 94 points: Deep crimson in the glass. The nose is relatively sweet and fruity, with some hints of graphite and tar. The wine really took me aback in the mouth, it grows and grows on the palate, to reveal many different layers of classic bordeaux flavours of cassis, black cherry, tobacco, leather etc, and really packs a decent punch. Then the real star of the show is the finish, which lasts for well over a minute. Wonderful. Drinking beautifully. (4655 views)

Tasted by Faryan on 6/28/2010 & rated 93 points: 2001 Bordeaux (Lavandou): The controversial specimen of the night. The nose retains classic Bordeaux elements of earthy tobacco, saddle and leather. It is delicate but well knit and fairly expressive. On the palate, there is a polished sense of roundness that some called international and modern Bordeaux. I think that it is a valid point, but one that should not be said disparagingly. I find the wine to be a stylistic preference. Those that have enjoyed Smith Haut Lafite and (perhaps less so) Lascombes of late will also enjoy this Pape Clement; it has that sense of craft to it while still retaining its left bank heritage. Others who prefer rustic wines that have a track-record of adding depth, complexity and pitch with significant bottle age may understandably approach this with skeptical caution. (9505 views)

Tasted by bsherwin on 1/23/2008: Haut-Bailly & Pape Clément (Compass): This wine is packed, but shows itself in a fairly restrained way. Not to say that this isn't made in a modern style, it is. The fruit is sweet bordering on jammy, but I didn't feel that it got out of hand, as there were ample tannins and good acidity. Common sense says to wait on this one, although it is certainly drinking well now with some fine secondary characteristics of spice and licorice. The aromas burst out of the glass poured just after opening of the bottle but then it closed down slowly over the next hour although not fully. We still enjoyed it and drank it up before it could make a comeback. Waiting 3 to 5 years seems the right thing to do. But it's a super wine, with lots of fruit and soft but noticeable tannins. Not too sweet, somewhat dusty ripe tannins, ripe black fruit, refreshing citruslike acidity, herbs and spices, liquorice etc. The aftertaste is maybe a bit short for so big a wine. But all in all certainly a very good wine that's drinking well already. (7986 views)
Tasted by pgm on 3/2/2006 & rated 95 points: Beautiful youthful color, dense purple with a bright magenta rim. Upon opening the bottle, it was all charcuterie and smoke, and a curtain of oak and tannin covering faint black cherry and hints of currant. The fruits took two hours to make a showing, but after 5 hours of decanting, the fruit really started shining: ripe black fruits and currant. The smoky, meaty complexity remained. Wonderful now, but I'm going to try to save this one until 2010; its potential is enormous. (7630 views)
Tasted by psmith on 12/29/2005 & rated 91 points: Eating and drinking my way through San Francisco; 12/26/2005-12/30/2005 (San Francisco, CA): Inserted as a ringer amongst Cali Cabs, though I doubt anyone was fooled. A bit tight, but expectedly so and certainly showing potential. Nose shows heavy coffee ground, black liqueur and cassis, and chocolate-covered cherry notes. Well balanced by rougher Bordeaux tannins. (8815 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 11/5/2005: '99 and '01 Bordeaux at Taverna: Coffee aromas. Concentrated compared to the Sociando tasted alongside. Currant fruit. Where will this go? (3210 views)
Tasted by Spencer on 3/20/2005 & rated 94 points: Doug brought this to my house, and we drank it along with some '02 Bordeaux that I had opened the night before. Even better than I hoped, the nose was just bursting from the glass with notes of smoke, cassis, raspberry jam, menthol, and an incredibly strong earthy/stony element. Sexy, voluptuous texture, with loads of red and black fruit that just coat the palate. Complex and beautifully proportioned, with a very long, expansive finish. I'm sure this will improve with age, but it's oh-so-good right now. Right up there with Latour as my wines of the vintage. (7938 views)
Tasted by Blair Curtis on 2/12/2005 & rated 90 points: The STG and Me take on 2001 Bordeaux (Susan's House, Seattle, WA): What a funky nose on this. Stinky. Some urine and ripe cheese. Reminds me on the nose of Bandol. Decent fruit, but again the horsey/sweaty profile comes through on the palate. Unique, especially in this tasting of young, "clean" Bordeaux. Enjoyable on its own terms. (9016 views)
Tasted by Jason on 2/12/2005 & rated 95 points: STG Does 2001 Bordeaux (Susan's house): Last year my wife called me from Costco and said that she had 6 bottles of this in her cart. I told her that we had bought enough 01 Bordeaux, so she should put them back. Why? This was the wine of the tasting. The nose showed wonderful campfire and black fruit elements. The palate had strong minerals with roasted fruits. Like many of the other wines it was long and sweet. What separated it from the other wines were the silky tannins. Yum. (9597 views)
Tasted by tanth on 11/29/2004: Smoke, graphite, tobacco and vanillin.Fullbody and high glycerin.Overwhelming acidity on the attack like most 2001s.Palate of mocha and minerals.Good structure and fine tannins.Good finish.Withhold rating as acid is just too much for my liking. (8431 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
