Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 14 notes)

Tasted by gcarl on 12/15/2014 & rated 91 points: Similar to my 2/19/11 impression at P&P, perhaps with a little raisin-like addition to the nose. Smooth on the palate with surprisingly bright fruit on the nose and palate after 30-60 minutes. Balance was topped w/Argon and consumed the next day, coincidentally as before, with rare loin lamb chops...a great match! (1750 views)
Tasted by NotNYC on 9/20/2013 & rated 85 points: Some wines are not meant to age.
This is one of them.

2013.. best as a pizza wine. Good pizza. (2366 views)
Tasted by gcarl on 2/19/2011 & rated 91 points: Nice barnyard nose upon opening, typical for this wine. A little tannic day one, very fruity and smooth with dinner of rear loin lamb chops on day 2. (3084 views)
Tasted by NotNYC on 4/30/2010 & rated 84 points: simple. woody. better than it was...but still, only a decent pizza wine. Doesn't stand up to scrutiny. (3301 views)
Tasted by gordoh on 10/18/2009 & rated 90 points: Perfect right now. (3510 views)
Tasted by TLHWG on 8/15/2009 & rated 86 points: day 1: moist prunes & some caramel/vanilla on the nose. nice nose
balanced and decent length of finish. but lighter bodied than I expected from an old vines mataro (mouvedra/monastrell).
not bad purchase on sale for $20, but wouldn't buy again even at $20.

update for day 2+ if significant change. (2863 views)
Tasted by NotNYC on 10/19/2008 & rated 87 points: Time has done this some favors. Not as rough or green..but still with some aeration this smooths ut and becomes a good food wine. More time may help. (1837 views)
Tasted by NotNYC on 8/20/2008 & rated 86 points: Good simple sipper. Lot of the tannins have backed off. So this works. Simple fruity and good. (1642 views)
Tasted by umazz on 8/21/2006 & rated 90 points: Big wine, tasted more of the sourness of a Southern Rhone wine, some tar, but definitely big fruit. (1551 views)
Tasted by umazz on 3/26/2006 & rated 85 points: A big, robust wine, very dry, not at all like a Mourvedre from France. Much more in the American style, although not as fruity as a syrah or zin. Had some sweettart-ness to it. S really liked it. (1556 views)
Tasted by cab on 2/27/2005: Too much oak, although the mourvedre varietal characteristics were there -- not like some over-oaked pinot disasters I've experienced recently where you truly could not tell what you were drinking. Decent backbone. Better with food -- moderately spicy mexican pork stew -- than on its own. OK, but way over-priced at $27-28. (2601 views)

Bonny Doon Vineyard

Producer website

Bonny Doon was sold in early 2020 to "WarRoom", a wine production and marketing entity formed in 2018. Per a January 2020 Decanter article - https://www.decanter.com/wine-news/californias-bonny-doon-sold-430550/ - "Graham will retain creative control of Bonny Doon’s wines, but production will change from 35,000 cases of 15 different wines annually to just four wines: the flagship red Rhône blend Le Cigare Volant; Le Cigare Blanc (based on Vermentino); Vin Gris de Cigare (a Rhône varietal rosé); and a 100% Picpoul."

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
