Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 64 notes)

Tasted by macliii on 5/29/2019 & rated 91 points: Good balance with dark fruit on the nose and on the palate. Dark purple with a medium finish, and a little spice. Still drinking nicely. (751 views)
Tasted by devraj on 2/13/2016 & rated 92 points: Dark reddish purple. Intense blackberry rock candy, dark cassis compote, tar/charcoal and white pepper on the nose. Full bodied, spherical, thick and chewy in the mouth with gobs of ripe and stewed small black fruits, savory pan drippings, low acidity, dissolving tannins with a long, fruity/charcoal tinged finish. This wine is not shy and is best drunk next to a burning fireplace on a winter's day. (2407 views)
Tasted by The Drunken Cyclist on 10/8/2015 & rated 92 points: Consistent notes.... (2714 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 6/24/2015 & rated 92 points: Very nice and drinking well. Quite the inky purple wine. Adequate nose. Very plush black and blue ripe and integrated fruit. Still with tannins and alcohol. Bold and beautiful. Long and very nice finish. (2894 views)
Tasted by devraj on 2/20/2015 & rated 93 points: Coravined. Soaring aromas of black currant preserves, black olive paste, bacon fat and graphite make up an enticing nose. The palate shows satin textured, sweet crushed black small fruits, low acidity, melting tannins and a long spicy and charcoal tinged finish. What a great showing and a good value to boot.  Tasted by ogres3 on 2/2/2015 & rated 92 points: In a great drinking window. Decanted 60 minutes. Deep hues with lush fruit. Up there with the Carlisle wines. (2529 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 1/24/2015 & rated 92 points: Opened about an hour before drinking. No need to decant or aerate. Seems to be peaking. Rich, with a great finish. (1142 views)
Tasted by Ecoenophile on 9/19/2014 & rated 91 points: PnP. Deep purple with long legs. Nose is dark and rich... hints of bramble and pepper, loaded with blackberry, blueberry and cola. Palate is a muted reflection of the nose... with some tart cherry on the back end. Nice residual acidity (or the tartness) on the finish... with just a hint of tannins. Drinking very nice right now. Very good QPR at $25 (PA State Store close out price from 2012). (1260 views)
Tasted by The Drunken Cyclist on 7/21/2014 & rated 91 points: I went to the cellar and pulled this without consulting CT (which is usually a dangerous proposition) but it turned out great. A great nose of mocha, blackberry, vanilla, and even a bit of anise led to a palate with tons of fruit and depth. This is an enjoyable wine that I could drink for a while. Siduri/Novy will always be one of my favorites precisely because of this wine—perhaps not the finesse that I prefer, but balanced and fun. In the end, I can’t really ask for a lot more. Outstanding. thedrunkencyclist.com (1315 views)
Tasted by emdub on 4/28/2013 & rated 91 points: My favorite of the 07 Syrahs we had. Better than the Rosella's and Susan Hill. The Garys has by far the most pepper and reminds me the most of a rhone style with it still being very California. (2370 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 3/23/2013 & rated 92 points: Opened (not decanted) about an hour before tasting. At this stage, it should be decanted or aerated. A big boy! A lot of smoke on the nose, but most of it blew off over time. Black and blue fruits, some smoke, and maybe a little sage. Full body and a little sweetness on the long finish. Delicious, but it's a bruiser right now, and drinking it was a little fatiguing. Definitely needs another couple years. (2249 views)
Tasted by The Drunken Cyclist on 3/3/2013 & rated 90 points: Retail $32. We are big fans of Siduri/Novy wines and this was no different. Big, dark fruit—probably the biggest of the Novy Syrahs that we have had. Thick and rich, but still refined and balanced. We enjoyed this with oxtail stew at our “new” local BYOB, the Blue Cat. Excellent. 89-91 Points.

Tasted by Frank Murray III on 1/22/2013: Bottle opened last night, had a glass but decided to wait for tonight. It started out last night a bit rich, kind of a maple note and seemed a bit sweet. It picked up some complexity as it sat, pulling in blue fruit notes, and also an interesting stone pit note that I often find from Susan's Hill, which is south of Garys', up on the Pisoni estate. Tonight, aromatically some of the stem quality also emerges, which I didn't find last night but very much enjoy here. The palate? Lots of blue fruit that cuts a broad coat across the mid-palate. Cooked meat, some tar, garrigue and better structure tonight that freshens up the palate with the maple, sweet note disappearing from last night. The finish drops off some and so the star really is the mid-palate. In sum, I like the wine better than last night but the complexity here is not all that strong so I would offer a drink window of now (with some air to let the stems and more rustic notes emerge), through 2015.  Tasted by mjnickel on 9/23/2012: This is a nice bottle of wine. Very dark fruit and extracted. The oak is well integrated and helps balance its power. it opened a little more on 2nd night, but the alcohol is just a tad hot. Consider decanting and/or serving slightly chilled (2953 views)
Tasted by nogohawk on 8/1/2012 & rated 92 points: Popped & poured; Drank over several nights - excellent syrah; loads of dark fruit with smoke & spice - nice finish (2887 views)
Tasted by cbbrown3 on 7/21/2012 & rated 93 points: Deep, dark ruby to purple color. Blackberries, licorice, smoked meat, pepper, blueberry, dried herbs, and dark chocolate on the very nice and inviting nose. Medium to dull body with solid, ripe tannins and very nice acidity. Spicy fruit with a nice meaty presence on the palate with more pepper and some earthiness coming in later. Nice lingering finish which again highlights the meaty elements with chocolate and fruit in the background. Very nice and impressive. (1889 views)

Tasted by J2K on 6/3/2012: Needed at least an hour to open up but drinking beautifully now. Full bodied, lush, and smooth, layers of fruit and spice with nice acidty and maybe some charcoal and black olive on the finish. I'm down with it! hink I'll buy some more (1517 views)

Tasted by cbbrown3 on 4/22/2011 & rated 92 points: Decanted for about 2 hours. Deep, dark maroon color. Blackberry, blueberry, smoked meat, pepper, and olives, with some soy sauce and chocolate on the nose. Medium body with solid, ripe tannins and very nice acidity. This is a big and rugged wine. The tannins and acidity provide a solid backbone. Nice, lingering finish with the savory elements in front with the fruit providing a nice background. This tastes very nice now, but this will improve with cellar time. (2755 views)

Tasted by Frank Murray III on 3/10/2011: This note formed on the wine being open for the 3rd day--it's totally aerated. Last time I had this bottle was before it was released, in June 2009. Having waited over 18 months, that seems like a fair yard stick to measure the wine again. Pours very dark, which I like in my syrah. The plushness I commented on back in 2009 is still here. In fact, this is one of the key features of the wine. Along with it, lots of fleshy dark fruit, the kind that feels like a barrel sample in tone, framed out by some milk chocolate. There is some blueberry, teriyaki/soy and some light shadings of acidity but this wine is more about plushness than complexity. I actually think it's best tonight, even moreso than last night, as some of the tarry acidity has come forward yet I think this particular Garys' will be an earlier drinker, more opulent than rugged, sexier than lean. I'd pair this wine a hearty burger, something that has some steak sauce and a bit of pepper.....PS--FWIW, I finished this wine on the 4th day it was open. It remained together and the flavors held up very well, even the acidity. I told my wife, "this stuff is like petite. I could probably leave it out another 4 days and it would be solid". (3008 views)
Tasted by nogohawk on 2/15/2011 & rated 93 points: Popped & poured - last bottle after several nice cabs & a btl of Tig; a bit more spice & smoke than the cabs; nice finish (3055 views)
Tasted by emdub on 2/8/2011 & rated 91 points: Stems shine through to compliment the beautiful blue and black fruit. Needs some more air or time to develop as this was a pnp. Open next bottle in 2 years. (3057 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 1/30/2011: 14.2% alcohol. Opened six hours before serving but not decanted. Very dark purple color, completely opaque. Gorgeous, refined nose of meaty black fruit, with pepper, and an earthy edge. In the mouth, a textural surprise. Super refined, with a silky mouth feel and impeccable balance. Beautifully concentrated, with layers of black fruit that are laced by meaty, spicy, and peppery notes. The acidity is good and unobtrusive, but there is nothing flabby about this wine in the least. Continues strong through the finish. An exceptionally good wine. A (3050 views)
Tasted by ClassicWater on 1/4/2011: A beautiful teenager of a wine. Starting to look like an adult but not quite legal. A little more time and this will be a looker. Lovely meaty, savory, stemmy, plum, and blueberry nose. Wild and ripe on the palate - blue fruits, olives, a delicious salinity with plenty of grip and structure. Substantially enjoyable wine.  Tasted by MindMuse on 11/6/2010 & rated 91 points: Consumed over three nights. Inky purple black. Nose of black olive, earth, blueberry, charcoal, meat, and camphor. Very savory in the mouth, consistent with nose. Not really a lot change over time, opened up a bit but did not fall off much at all. (3403 views)
Tasted by brianngibson on 8/13/2010 & rated 91 points: Blueberry, blackberry . . . juice . . . but not quite the jam I would expect from this grape, vineyard, and vintage. Solid effort, but not quite up there with some of the other producers from this same terroir. (3699 views)
Tasted by rhit on 8/2/2010: A somewhat funky nose of black olive and heavy, sweet oak, neither of which blew off. [Update - the nose was considerably easier to take on day two.] Nice mouthfeel, and some savory tones that just end up sweet and flat. Didn't want to finish the bottle. (3775 views)
Tasted by jeanluc07 on 6/13/2010 & rated 92 points: Dark purple violet color; creamy oak, plum, chocolate, berry; medium-plus finish 92 pts. Would buy again. (3959 views)
Tasted by raydawgone on 4/16/2010 & rated 92 points: Burnt earth and minerals on nose. Dark red muted fruit with raw, Kobe strip steak sprinkled with Lawry's season salt. Similar notes to Northern Rhone, Cote Rotie style. Impressive. (4043 views)
Tasted by markandsusanw on 4/1/2010 & rated 92 points: Very nice Syrah. Dry, with big fruit and firm tannins, but still very smooth. Very balanced, rich wine that improved in the glass as the night went on. (Didn't plan ahead in order to decant.) (4104 views)

Tasted by cmr on 12/7/2009 & rated 90 points: A solid 90pts. Full bodied excellent black fruits some spice and meat aromas with some earthiness. Structure and balance are together, just very enjoyable and should last quite a few more years. (4057 views)

Tasted by stlbites on 11/5/2009 & rated 90 points: Opened up over time, but fairly tight on opening. Had a green funk that through me until it opened up and started releasing a bit of fruit. A bit more subtle style then many of the other Cali fruit-bomb syrahs. (4175 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 8/10/2009 & rated 90 points: 2007 Novy Syrahs Blindtasted w/Adam Lee (Tom's House, Palo Alto, CA): Group's #9 (my #5) – 106 pts; 1, 0, 1, 1 - opaque dark red violet color; nice floral, black fruit, tar, oak, blackberry nose; tasty, tart blackberry, black fruit and oregano palate with a green core and touch of herb, good acidity; medium-plus finish that shows some unresolved greenness 90+ pts. (40% whole cluster) (4279 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 6/15/2009: 2007 Novy Syrah Party + A Pile Of Other Things (The Murray Casa): Plush but seemed to laxk some of the complexity of the Rosella's. Consistent with Garys' terroir, blackberry, teriyaki and a blueberry juicyness. At 3 hours open, spicy, meaty, plush with beef jerky and teriyaki, which these last two characteristics being what Garys' is for me. I would be interested to re-try this wine in 6 months to see if it can add on some complexity. Good enough now but want more. (4564 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Garys' Vineyard

Appellation: Santa Lucia Highlands
Planted: 1997
Total Vineyard Acreage: 50 acres
Varietals: Pinot Noir, Syrah
Clone/ Rootstock: Pisoni Clone planted to 3309 and 5C
Exposure: Southeast
Trellising: VSP Bilateral
Spacing: 6x8 and 5x8

The Garys’ Vineyard is a joint venture between two
native growers of the Santa Lucia Highlands. Gary
Pisoni and Gary Franscioni planted this 50-acre
vineyard to Pinot Noir and Syrah in 1997. Its location
on a sloping hillside in the center of the 16-mile long
appellation offers a true representation of the Santa
Lucia Highlands.

From Club Testarossa June 2013 tasting notes:

In the hierarchy of great California vineyards, it doesn't get much better than Garys' - the eponymous
collaboration of winegrowers Gary Pisoni and Gary Franscioni - one of the most famous estates on the
West Coast. The Wine Enthusiast designates Garys' vineyard as the closest vineyard to an "American Grand
Cru."

Just off of Highway 101 about 80 miles south of San Jose takes you to the heart of the Santa Lucia
Highlands Appellation - home to Garys' Vineyard. Owned jointly by the Pisoni and Franscioni families and
managed by Mark Pisoni and Gary Franscioni, this is one of the crown jewels for Pinot Noir collectors.
"We view our vineyard as multi-generational commitments to growing grapes that can produce the most
remarkable and balanced wines."

Testarossa has one of the longest running, closest relationships with the vineyard - the 2011 vintage marks
our thirteenth release from Garys' The Highlands close proximity to Monterey Bay's cool climate make for
one of California's longest growing seasons. The vineyard's sloping orientation on the southeast facing
bench on sandy, gravelly loam soils provides just the right mix of sun, wind, and fog. Testarossa's section of
Garys' Vineyard is three pristine acres of the famous "Pisoni Clone" Pinot Noir, originally planted in 1997.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
