Community Tasting Notes (average 92.5 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 112 notes)

Tasted by JBD on 6/11/2020 & rated 93 points: Extremely smooth for a Syrah. Feels young for 2008. (1595 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 5/4/2019 & rated 94 points: This wine was in a surprising sweet spot right now. Better than our previous tasting, The color was deep, smooth sweet tannins. Rich fruit in the nose and flavor. Blackberries, black cherries, plums, licorice, and chocolate. The 16% alcohol level completely disappeared. Full bodied, well balanced, and a long finish. Delicious. 93/94 (1916 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 9/27/2018 & rated 97 points: My last of three bottles of this outstanding mature Syrah. Drank with grilled pork loin chops and sauteed fresh garden carrots. This is a wonderful bottle of CA Syrah so good and fairly priced that it defines QPR. Flavors perfectly integrated with loads of rich dark fruits, licorice and earthiness. So satisfying. Defiantly drinking at peak for my taste. If I had more I would be drinking these. (2357 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 8/29/2018 & rated 94 points: Delicious mature syrah. Dark fruits, earthiness. Just beautiful. Drinking at or near peak. Drink or hold. (2210 views)
Tasted by ljl203 on 2/3/2018 & rated 93 points: One of the best Syrah's I've had. Berry nose. Meat, baby powder, tea, honey & lemons, a wet earthiness with fruit, and a nice finish. (2529 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 12/31/2017 & rated 92 points: Blackberries, licorice, chocolate, and coffee. Full bodied and a medium to long finish. (1640 views)
Tasted by btock on 11/21/2017 & rated 94 points: Excellent showing. In a flight with the '07 and '08 Carlisle James Berry and the '08 Papa's delivered the purest fruit expression. No rough edges, well made wine. Silky purple fruits, a fun drink. Some light floral top notes but really all about the fruit. Holding up extremely well. (1545 views)
Tasted by WineGuyDelMar on 10/8/2017 & rated 92 points: Wonderful layering a flavors. Dark purple still and just a great Syrah. We had this side by side with a 2008 Cardiac Hill which was much harder and more one dimensional. Papas has very soft integrated tannins where the Cardiacs tannins were more pronounced and harder. Carlisle Papas Block is the best Carlisle Syrah and the only one I will be buying going forward. (1852 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 9/2/2017 & rated 96 points: Drank my first of these last night with barbecue chicken thighs. What an outstanding bottle of Syrah. Give this beauty an hour or two after opening then get ready for a blockbuster syrah. Dark fruits, cassis, licorice, earthiness. Tannin fully resolved. Beautiful balance. Happy to have a few more to drink over the next 3-5 years. (1835 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 3/24/2017 & rated 93 points: Deep purple. Grilled beef, lavender, stone minerals and ripe plum on the nose. Young, tannic, big, dark fruit, tart, and finishes with black raspberry and ripe black cherry. Needed some air time. No hurry to drink this. Amazing QPR. Mike Officers' Syrahs are as special as his Zins. (2073 views)
Tasted by Quiet Lion on 8/21/2016 & rated 93 points: Fruity, accessible, nice chocolate and berry notes, crowd pleaser. (2579 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 5/2/2016: Decanted 45 minutes, consumed over next 2.5 hours. Inky dark in color. Olives, coffee, herbs, blackberry, blueberry, and cocoa. Integrated tannins at this point. Nice balance. Only when you sit and focus on it do you really get a sense of the 15.1% alcohol otherwise it hides it pretty well. Delicious new world syrah. (2722 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 3/24/2016 & rated 94 points: Opaque purple in color. 15.1% ABV. Savory nose of herbs, iron and olives. Medium to full body with strong acidity. Rich and plush with fantastic mouth feel. Blueberries, cassis liqueur and roasted meats on the palate. The finish is exceptional. Gorgeous Syrah that should drink well for another 2-4 years. (2734 views)
Tasted by tcarter on 2/27/2016 & rated 95 points: This wine is singing right now! Utterly perfect compliment to BBQ--ribs, pulled pork, tri-tip and all the fixins. Really great stuff. (2633 views)
Tasted by hdchappy on 12/24/2015 & rated 92 points: Tasted side by side blind with the 2008 Relentless from Shafer. This wine was slightly preferred. Loaded with deep dark fruit, took a bit to open up so needs a few hour decant. Very good (2342 views)
Tasted by cab blends on 9/27/2015 & rated 86 points: Olives metallic (2253 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 9/27/2015 & rated 86 points: Color: Deep purple with a red hue
Nose: Olives, raspberries, very light
Palate: Soft, ok tannins, ends med palate for me, occasionally goes to end with a metallic finish
Opinion: Honestly, for my first Carlisle, I am not impressed. I would not buy this again. Coravinned. (1924 views)
Tasted by rwerner on 9/4/2015 & rated 93 points: Coffee, rich dark fruit with a long finish. Smooth tannin, a long finish and delicious. (1964 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 8/25/2015 & rated 87 points: Coravin: Alcohol is coming on strong, I will have to try this with a few hour decant (1907 views)
Tasted by cab blends on 8/25/2015 & rated 86 points: Dark red/purple. Ginger and raspberry on the nose. Metallic and vegetal in the finish. (1803 views)
Tasted by Ed B on 5/9/2015 & rated 92 points: PnP as second wine with cheese and hummus after golf. No detailed notes. Huge dark fruit, which opened up quickly and became very expressive. This wine deserves more attention than I gave it. (1866 views)
Tasted by sp4388 on 3/16/2015 & rated 93 points: Super delicious blackberries blueberries and leather plus mouthwatering acidity and a healthy dose of tannin. Carlisle delivers again. This should be very good for at least another 5 years (1946 views)
Tasted by mdaniel on 3/15/2015 & rated 94 points: Pop & pour: This has softened a bit since we last had four years ago, but it still a beautiful wine in a less in your face style. (2111 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 3/11/2015: Big and rich with blackberries, blueberries, charcoal, and some olive notes. A good amount of acid but still on the decadent side. A little over the edge for me but my wife liked it. (1816 views)
Tasted by rwerner on 1/18/2015 & rated 93 points: Everything you could want in a syrah. Rich dark fruit flavors, leather in the mouth lingering through the a long finish. Very balanced tannins
The wine looks ruby colored. There is no sediment in the bottle. (2006 views)
Tasted by oski on 11/26/2014 & rated 94 points: In a good place right now. Good fruit, nice acidity and tannins (2157 views)
Tasted by GoldenTbne on 11/23/2014 & rated 92 points: Decanted for 30 minutes or so. The alcohol is still apparent, but the wine is in a good place right now...and still has enough going to age nicely for a few more years. (2518 views)
Tasted by Matt Scott on 9/26/2014 & rated 95 points: This, frankly, is aging healthier than the desired '07. (I had my last bottle in June and it has fallen apart! I loved its unctuous profile, however, she is not for the cellar - I couldn't write a note.) Sultry, and evocative. Blackberry, dried basil, charged meat, white truffle and crushed rock. Agile, yet the core shows obvious concentration. This will continue to age nicely. Better now than ever! Drink now - 2022. (2517 views)
Tasted by Dale B. on 9/8/2014 & rated 88 points: I had a hard time getting past the alcohol on an otherwise very well made wine. A 2 hour decant showed a mostly blueish fruit profile. Good length and smooth tannins, but still a hot wine IMO. (2730 views)
Tasted by Giggs on 8/31/2014 & rated 92 points: Decanted 45 minutes. Floral/sweet/sugary black fruit nose, quite meaty, with strong black slate/graphite mineral. Palate picks up roasted espresso bean, dark chocolate, asphalt, and melted licorice... all the notes you might associate with a big, ripe, aggressive Syrah. It's a nice big wine that would certainly be a crowd pleaser, but it's not complex or unique enough to garner a higher score. Drink now-2019. (2188 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 8/17/2014 & rated 93 points: Excellent syrah. Decanted about 90 minutes. Fairly opaque. Still with some alcohol. Rich black fruit that is a bit overwhelming and can be paired with spicy food. Lingering finish. Quite enjoyable. (2206 views)
Tasted by bubbachumps on 7/6/2014 & rated 93 points: Dark fruits, smoke, tar and some BBQ on the nose. In the mouth, well integrated, but still some structure present. Long finish. Has plenty of life left in it, but in a nice place now. (2922 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 6/11/2014 & rated 92 points: Decanted over an hour and still going full throttle. Purple hues, lots of bold fruit with a not subtle new world finish. Would be interested to see how this would evolve over another 5-8 years. (2563 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 11/17/2013: Well, I'll admit some confusion with my palate or bottle variation--not sure but the bottle last night didn't taste really anything much like the bottle from this past June. Last night's showed a wine more like syrah, nothing much like zin. Had a blood and iron aromatic, along with lavender. Spicy black fruit with a roasted quality and a finish of light chocolate. All of this doesn't say zin so either take my June note with a grain of salt or maybe some bottle to bottle variation. In total, was drinking well and should show some further improvement, too. (3295 views)
Tasted by drrobvino on 11/2/2013 & rated 91 points: Nice. Smoky, black fruited, deep and complex without being syrupy. Drink now, tho. (2920 views)
Tasted by jaumealaska on 10/28/2013 & rated 93 points: Game and dark fruit to the nose, extracted body with some heat but decent balance and long finish. Enjoyed it but probably will wait for the 2009 to cellar 5 or 6 years before trying. (3073 views)
Tasted by Bob & Sue Atlanta on 6/28/2013 & rated 96 points: Outstanding. Needs a few more years in the cellar. (3126 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 6/15/2013: This wine reminds me of the 2004 Carlisle Bennett Valley Judge Vineyard syrah, tasting as that wine did a few years back, seeming more like a plump and dark zin than a syrah. And as I look at my previous note from Dec 2010 on this 2008 Papa's, I did comment about some acidity but I don't find much of any now. What is here is a core of sweet leather-tinged dark fruit that is plump and on the sweeter side, finishing with a blueberry note and a light chocolate. It's got a juicy, punchy element to it and drank blind, I could be fooled into thinking this is bold and riper toned zin. I'm taking this to dinner to have with probably a turkey sandwich or mac and cheese so for that kind of food, this oughta do great...over dinner, this did not change much, however, there was a surprise food pairing moment we had over dessert. We ordered what I'd call a dark chocolate creme brulee with a dusting of salt and this created a nice discussion around how food can impact a wine's experience, making the wine here less fruit-centric and restrained. As for a drink window, I'd say now, as much as I did when I drank the 2004 BV a few years back. Don't age this any further, but instead enjoy it for what it is now. (3108 views)
Tasted by Mattshank on 5/12/2013 & rated 92 points: Nose: Just like last bottle drank recently the black fruits are there with earth and tar. Palate: Ahhh, this is Papa's Block and markedly better than the last bottle (3/27/13) as this is not showing the alc levels nearly as bad. Flavors of meat, black fruits and spice on the medium length finish. Good stuff and my last bottle of this. (2759 views)
Tasted by S R U D I N on 5/6/2013 & rated 92 points: Silky ink velvet texture with a crimson/plum color is as beautiful as it is captivating. Coffee, berries, flowers, and leather both in the nose and the flavor. (3090 views)
Tasted by nectar14 on 4/11/2013 & rated 89 points: Dark purple. Expressive nose, though not all that focused. Blackberry, cured meat, and a floral quality as well. The wine included a lot of flavor, but had a coarse and unfocused quality. Touch of bitter oak and slight alcoholic heat. Not as polished as other versions of this wine, and I wonder if the heat of '08 wasn't it's undoing. (2626 views)
Tasted by t_moderne on 4/2/2013 & rated 88 points: Pop and pour and tasted over two days; first day was with food (a homemade gyro, in case you were wondering, with grilled lamb and tzatziki).Dark purple color; nose of spice and a slight medicinal note. Good fruit, rich and sweet, from the ripe fruit, with a touch of spice and pepper on the finish. On the second day, it had a bit if heat as the sweetness of the fruit faded slightly. (2363 views)
Tasted by Mattshank on 3/27/2013 & rated 90 points: Nose: Black fruits with earth, moss and mineral. Palate: Big tannins and the black fruits show with a bit of a bitter quality. The monster alc levels of 15% showed but did dissapate after a great deal of air. Nonetheless this is not the '07' by any means. Too bad the alc levels are so high as this has good breeding, but those attributes are obscured by alcohol heat in the absense of which this would score much higher. I am surprised by all the high scores listed (many with no prose which is telling). (2609 views)
Tasted by pgb67 on 3/1/2013 & rated 90 points: Winter 2013 Wine Parties: Rich and deep with well-integrated tannins and balanced structure – classy all the way. Plums, black cherries, & spice were just some of the characteristics detected. Nevertheless, I think I have a slight preference for Carlisle zins over the syrahs. (2566 views)
Tasted by Uglypinga on 10/5/2012: Wow nose of beef, vanilla, tobacco and dark fruits. The palate is thick and lush with beef, blackberries and sweet vanilla notes. Delicious. (2893 views)

Tasted by DPMc on 8/22/2012 & rated 95 points: A great wine. Dark and rich with layers of flavors, but very fresh and balanced. Not a hard edge to be found. No need to wait on this. (3233 views)
Tasted by michigan dogs on 6/15/2012 & rated 92 points: Excellent, took to a tasting at WOW, everyone was very impressed, dark ink black color, dark fruits, a little mineral, one of Carlisle's best; and ready for drinking now or much later (3174 views)
Tasted by dhammer53 on 4/30/2012 & rated 93 points: Drank this at Lasher's in Long Beach. Inky color. The best ever perfume nose! Very smooth, with taste of chocolate and berries. This was an 'oh my' wine. The short pour leftover wine was pretty delicious the following day. With the Papa's Block reputation, I should have bought more. I'm sitting on other vintages, so I'm somewhat covered. Thank you Mike for making affordable wines. (3277 views)
Tasted by ews3 on 3/23/2012 & rated 93 points: Very fruit forward at this stage, but well balanced acid and a nice sweet spice note behind the fruit. Very pleasant. Finish has a nice spice that interacts well with the acid. (3076 views)

2008 Carlisle Papa’s Block Syrah (3)[2]
2006 Rhys Syrah (2)[1]
2004 Shafer Relentless (0)[3]

Quick Notes:
All of these were run through a Vinturi and left to sit in glasses about an hour before service.
The Rhys was really outstanding and to be honest I expected to have it place 3rd in that lineup as I love the Carlisle and Shafer, but it was indeed my favorite. Well made and drinking beautifully.
I’ve tasted the Carlisle and Shafer again day 2 and 3 as there were leftovers and these continue to improve.. just stunning wines in my opinion. (3491 views)

Tasted by Outplaying on 12/11/2011: After a trip to a urologist and sitting around all weekend with a bag of peas in my lap, I couldn't think of a more appropriate cork to pop. The only question was the year. I went with this one as I had two bottles. Decadent, rich, lush yet its not near being over the top. The wine stays fresh and pure with blue and black fruits and some charcoal. Far from a rhone styled syrah. This is just so much fun to drink and the 15.1% alc is hidden really well. Excellent. Will try to hold my last bottle for a while longer. (3424 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 11/16/2011 & rated 91 points: Very vibrant and fresh. Well balanced and tannins are soft. Still seems quite young. (3958 views)
Tasted by jrobs7777 on 11/12/2011 & rated 92 points: Blind Price Test (Our House (2033 Brandywine)): A year since our previous bottle of this. Maybe it has mellowed a bit based on our previous notes. It has what I enjoy in a Carlisle Syrah. Their goal is not subtlety but at the same time, they do not seem out to make over the top wines. We had this double blind. Darker blue fruits, espresso like color, a touch of mocha. Good sweetness. I think the consensus appreciated this wine the most in the flight. (4207 views)
Tasted by ews3 on 11/12/2011 & rated 94 points: "Does price matter?" Blind Tasting (Roberts House, Philadelphia PA): tasted blind in flight of 3 CA syrahs. decanted ~6 hrs. carlisle syrahs continue to impress me, especially papa's block. really nice plum and sweet spice. nice black pepper notes linger on the medium (+) finish, which unfortunately shows some heat. correctly identified as the mid-range (and carlisle since i was single blind on this). We finished this on day 3 and it was still holding up well with very primary fruit. Will last. (4613 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 11/11/2011 & rated 88 points: nose: very rich and dense while being rather chunky as well. Big and tight with tones of licorice, black cherries and black fruits.

taste: full bodied with big and grippy tannins. The palate is a bit rough and chunky right now with tones of licorice, black fruits, liqueur tones and some black cherries.

overall: I figured this for a new world syrah blind. It's rough and pretty young right now. It does need time to smooth out the rough edges as the structure is bigger. (2182 views)

Tasted by Scott Butler on 10/2/2011: Decanted for 2 hours, and would suggest 3-4 hours. Stunning nose of fruit and flowers, with a hint of chocolate. Eventually opened up and wow, was this good. Blackberry, black cherry, pepper, roasted meat, nice depth of flavors/ Good acidity, this is young, and will clearly improve over time, but just wonderful tonight! (4312 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 9/26/2011 & rated 94 points: Rich, delicious, round, smooth, opulent blackberry fruit with soft chocolate, meaty, and toasty vanillin oak flavors, excellent structure, very well integrated fruit and flavors, drinking superbly right now, long finish, best of the Carlisle Syrahs that I've had (3648 views)

Tasted by Li6 on 2/5/2011 & rated 91 points: Very pure notes of stewed strawberries and raw meat that become olive tapenade and raspberry liqueur with some air contact. Full-bodied but very fresh, the mid-palate and finish could both be a bit more pronounced. Outstanding nonetheless. Am hopeful it'll flesh out with some cellar time. (4508 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 12/26/2010: I think this wine had been open for at least a day before I tried it, although it had a gray stopper in so I think it had been pumped out. Seemed to be lighter in weight and tone than the 2007 that I had recently drank from my own cellar, documented last month. Color is not as saturated as the 2007, but the flavor is there, with some olive, cooked meat, mix of black and red fruit and nice finishing acidity. Finish showed some grip too, even with the storage comment I made but this is a 2008 so not a surprise. I didn't get to sample a whole lot of this but these were my short impressions. (4278 views)

Tasted by jrobs7777 on 11/13/2010 & rated 91 points: Rhone Varietal Tasting (Our House (2033 Brandywine St., Philadelphia)): Inky dark color. Nose of a lot of dark fruit and oak. The nose is an in your face type, with huge dark fruit, but there is a nice little floral note that emerged with some swirling in the glass. The palate does not let up. Big big fruit with menthol and pepper. Everything seemed to be within balance, though. It is just too big for my tastes, and lacked some nuance. Very nice long finish, but there was some heat on the finish. (5406 views)
Tasted by ews3 on 11/13/2010 & rated 95 points: Syrahs and other Rhone varietals (Roberts House): decanted 6 hours. really nice. wonderful perfumed quality to the nose that launched blackberry and other black fruits up into the nose with some floral violet notes. the palate is dominated by rich black fruit and offers mint and menthol notes to keep it fresh and lively. med-long finish is stunning. a delicious wine. (5659 views)
Tasted by Jody Smith on 10/20/2010: Nice after a 4 hour decant. Rich and decadent blackberry and plum fruit is tempered by an everpresent beam of acidity. Finishes with chalky tannin and creme brûlée notes. Chewing on it a bit releases some floral and mineral notes. Approachable now, but will offer more in another year. No need for long term cellaring, but can gain some complexity without comprimsing any fruit with a short rest. (4766 views)
Tasted by wineguy58 on 8/15/2010: Committed a vino sin. Opened up way too early and improperly decanted. Flavors barely came through. Will be better in a year or two. (4420 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 6/9/2010: An excellent young syrah. In fact, all of the 2008 Carlisles I have tried have been very good. Blueberries, blackberries, and a touch of charcoal, herbal notes and faint vanilla. I can see the whole cluster influence. Huge nose. This is very drinkable now but will surely drink well for a while. Big and rich but not an over the top fruit bomb. Over the last few years this has become one of my favorite Carlisle bottlings. Nice job Mike and Jay! (4686 views)

2008 Carlisle Syrah Papa's Block

Our 2007 Papa’s Block Syrah created quite a stir last year. But you know what? As good as it was, Jay and I think the 2008 is even better. The 2008 exhibits the same wonderful aromas and flavors as the 2007 but possesses greater balance. Unfortunately, however, we don’t have much to offer. As mentioned earlier, Papa’s Block was hit hard by frost in this vintage, reducing yields to nearly half of what we were expecting. Only 22% new oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Dark ruby-purple. A perfumed, captivating nose of blackberry and cassis is highlighted by savory herbal notes (no doubt from the whole clusters used in fermentation). The wine enters smoothly, quickly enveloping the palate with its creamy, berry goodness. This is already very difficult to resist. Enjoy from release through 2017.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
