Tasted by Ridgerunner on 4/11/2024 & rated 96 points: incredible Australian shiraz by Ben Glaetzer. A masterwork that proves that Australian wines are age worthy wines of substance (156 views)
Tasted by funderwood10 on 3/9/2024 & rated 94 points: What a stunner. Someone described this as a sea of calmness but this particular bottle was more like a slender yet sleek, quietly powerful wine. The tannins have mellowed but still structurally supports gracefully with appropriate acid. The bouquet is one of berries, flowers and soft vanilla leather. One of the best new worlds I’ve tried. (397 views)
Tasted by Eckie on 11/27/2023 & rated 92 points: Finally my last bottle. Fun to witness the evolution of this wine over the years. It has now completely settled down, no more in your face fruitiness, just a sea of calmness. (659 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 10/30/2023 & rated 92 points: Wonderfully fresh black fruit on nose and palate with black pepper, anise, and clove notes. Rich and ripe, but managing to maintain enough subtlety and restraint. The old vine concentration here is particularly noteworthy. (1376 views)
Tasted by Dibbs on 10/24/2023 & rated 94 points: I really agree with Forceberry's note here. This was clearly New World, clearly a big wine but never went over the line. A great steak wine. Shared with my parents (non-winos) who thoroughly enjoyed it. Good memories! (826 views)
Tasted by Julien D on 7/30/2023 & rated 92 points: This wine does not look or smell like it’s almost 20yo. Nose is powerful and driven by red plum, dark cherry with a background of leather. With air the wine starts showing more dry fruit and nutmeg. Mouth is medium to full bodied. Acidity is gone and tannins fully resolved bc. It’s not heavy and it doesn’t feel 15%. Prune and baking spice flavors lead in a medium finish (915 views)
Tasted by RED AND BLACK on 1/22/2022 & rated 94 points: Fantastic wine from Barossa, agree with other comments saying this is as good as this region can produce. This is still full-bodied, dark-fruited, with black cherry and plum fruit, and notes of baking spices, mocha and cedar. Creamy and velvety in texture. Great wine and has more yrs to go. Maybe complexity not the best, but who cares! (2554 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 1/4/2022 & rated 93 points: Dense and very concentrated black fruit with so much anise, black pepper and clove. Clearly so ripe in the manner that is unmistakable for New World style, but with an enticing Old World flavor profile that really thrilled me tonight. Great length and balance. (3169 views)
Tasted by devraj on 12/8/2021 & rated 94 points: Purple in color. Soaring aromas of black cherries, black currants, violets bbq smoke and tar. Rich and dense in the mouth with sweet dark berry jam, charcoal, medium (-) acidity, fine tannins making its presence felt and a very long fruit filled finish. This has not aged one bit. Damn good for the genre. (2262 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 10/11/2021 & rated 93 points: 100% old-vine Shiraz from 50-130 yo vineyards in the Ebenezer sub-district. Fermented in open-top fermentors, aged for 16 months in new oak barrels (95% French, 5% American). Bottled unfiltered. 15% alcohol.

Deep, dark and almost fully opaque black cherry color. Powerful, spicy and remarkably intense nose with slightly sweet-toned aromas of ripe blackberries, peppery spice, some licorice root, a little bit of wizened dark plus, light inky tones, a hint of toasty oak spice and a sweet touch of blueberry juice. The wine feels dense, sinewy and more savory than sweet-toned on the palate with a full body yet not particularly big or weighty overall feel. The wine is dominated by intense flavors of black cherries, woody spice and peppery tones along with some gamey notes, a little bit of evolved pruney character, light licorice nuances, a hint of savory earth and a touch of sweet pipe tobacco smoke. The overall feel is quite structured, although the structure relies much more on the fine-grained yet quite firm and grippy tannins than on the rather soft medium-plus acidity. The finish is ripe, powerful and somewhat grippy with dry and savory flavors of licorice, dried prunes, some juicy blackcurrant tones, a little bit of woody oak spice, light peppery tones, a hint of earth and a sweet touch of blackberry marmalade. The high alcohol lends some obvious heat to the aftertaste.

A Barossa Shiraz that's obviously a very big and ripe, yet one that manages to avoid the pitfalls of being too soft, too massive or too oaky. Although the wine could be a bit higher in acidity, it never comes across as too soft or fat. And although not young anymore, the wine doesn't come across as particularly evolved either: it is in a terrific spot right now, exhibiting tons of ripe fruit flavors that are not yet tertiary; a nice backdrop of understated, not obfuscating oak influence; and good, not aggressive tannic backbone. Although I was afraid this was going to be another big, ponderous and heavily Parkerized oz red, this turned out to be a cult-ish Barossa Shiraz where the reputation actually befits the wine. Although very enjoyable now, I can see this wine being able to improve for at least another handful of years in a cellar. Recommended. (3034 views)
Tasted by ShadowIII on 9/6/2021 & rated 93 points: Big wine, plush, mellow, dark fruits, plum, spice, hints of cedar, long finish (2486 views)
Tasted by gteran76 on 3/20/2021 & rated 93 points: Short decanted for 30 min, consumed 2 hours after. Many confused it with a California Cabernet. Big body, very interesting and well balanced. (1820 views)
Tasted by faivre_eric on 1/17/2021 & rated 92 points: Big wine, deep purple color.
Lovely black current nose, sweet jam, integrated tannins, good acidity balance and long finish. (1928 views)

Tasted by roasted hill on 8/30/2020: Decanted 90 minutes. Lotsa sediment. Deeper than violet. Nose of cassis, dark berry, fresh flowers, bloody meat and stone. Dark berry, dark cherry, raw meat, and fennel flavors run through a long finish. Really drinking well and it's a great example of its type. (2212 views)
Tasted by Gbeechum on 6/6/2020 & rated 95 points: Needed aging and is delicious. Big, fruit forward and complex. (2149 views)
Tasted by Eckie on 5/29/2020 & rated 96 points: This currently is at the highest level the Barossa Valley has to offer. Truly outstanding in its sort, though not my taste anymore. (1870 views)
Tasted by cephomer on 1/15/2020 & rated 91 points: Popped & poured at Vt w/the professor's pasta dish. Big and bold, though not quite as over the top as it was with less bottle age. Still plenty of fruit, heavy concentration and long finish. Black pepper and spice abounds. Still could go another 5 yrs easily. Decant in the future (2258 views)
Tasted by roasted hill on 10/14/2019: Unchanged since my last note of three years ago. Remains primary. This wasn't supposed to be a subtle experience, and it is not.... (2275 views)
Tasted by srh on 9/21/2019: Winebar [1 Rosé, 3 Whites, 8 Reds, & 6 *shared* bottles] from 09/20/19 (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): WHAT an *awesome* wine, Torben! THANK you sooooooo MUCH for sharing it! :)

An unfiltered wine supposedly made from vines > 100 yrs old.

N: FUNK which pretty much blows to RIPE berries & other unparsables; Intensity lurking

p: LM, poss Med, body; VERY *nice*, ALMOST swtish frt met by an astringent/PUCKER which stays firmly in contact with the init frt as it SEAMLESSLY evolves into a VERY LONG, impeccably BALANCED finish with a delightful tangy/swtness (& notes of blk olives?) to the UNOFFENSIVE, yet firming, tannins. While it's tough to imagine this drinking BETTER, I'm guessing it could well approach its 20th. My Exceptional-/Exceptional (96-100/100 on that metric)! 17.5/20 Jancis Robinson, 89 RJonWine, + NUMEROUS other scores on wine-searcher's Tasting Notes pg (including a 99 from WA on 2/28/13)! Glaetzer Shiraz Amon-Ra Barossa Valley

AMON-Ra. BY BEN GLAETZER

Amon-Ra Shiraz is an iconic wine that epitomises Ben Glaetzer’s passion to create wines that are full flavoured, multi layered and intense but still elegant, stylish and finely balanced.

In Egyptian mythology, Amon-Ra is considered to be the king of all gods. The temple of Amon-Ra was believed to be the first temple to ever plant a monoculture vineyard to produce wine for the citizens of the temple.

The eye on front of the label is the all-seeing eye of Horus or wedjat ("whole one") - a powerful Egyptian symbol of protection. It is represented as a figure with six parts, corresponding to what Egyptians regarded as the six senses; touch, taste, hearing, sight, smell and thought.

Ben created Amon-Ra Shiraz to appeal to all these six senses.

Amon-Ra

As the King of all Gods, Amon-Ra is considered the most powerful figure in Egyptian mythology. The temple of Amon-Ra is recorded as the birthplace of commercial winemaking, having the first ever large scale vineyard grown specifically to make wine for the citizens of the temple. For the 2001 and 2002 vintages there were distinct McLaren Vale AND Barossa Valley bottlings, but from 2003 onward there has only been a Barossa Valley bottling.
