Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.7 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 65 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by RedLester on 4/25/2023 & rated 93 points: Still a bit tight out of the bottle, but opened up beautifully in the glass.
Soft tannins but still lots of structure. Some nicely developed tertiary character.
Really complex, rewarding, delicious. Drinking beautifully now, but I expect will not deteriorate for some years yet. (412 views)
Tasted by NickBurwood on 8/27/2022 & rated 91 points: 91+ - plenty of time here for yet further development. (821 views)
Tasted by hargy on 8/20/2022 & rated 91 points: not my favourite grape but it does improve quite significantly with time - this was quite delicious (870 views)
Tasted by alexc on 4/16/2021 & rated 90 points: Drinking beautifully now. No hint of burnt rubber............ (1387 views)
Tasted by rikipedia on 4/4/2021 flawed bottle: Kicks off with a classic toasted marshmallow note, then morphs to an earthy character. Soft on attack with a more mould note, still marshmallow, bit of bonfire, sweet finish, but possibly slightly scalped or faintly corked - had better. (1241 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 1/6/2020 & rated 93 points: Deep ruby red in appearance. A bit of minerality on the nose with dark berries, perfumed herbs, and spices. Medium tannins (6.5/10) and medium plus body. Dark berries on the palate with lavender, gravel and cherries. Long finish. Drink till 2028. (2189 views)
Tasted by Justinagogo on 10/25/2019 & rated 86 points: 由于轻微corked一级香气不明显
decant之后开始有橡木烘烤的可可和森林地表的气息,随后动物皮毛和轻微血腥的气息,入口后饱满圆润酒体,酸度很好,单宁柔顺 (1875 views)
Tasted by ricard on 6/19/2019 & rated 93 points: Every time I think Pinotage I think burnt rubber. I try really hard to not find this characteristic, but it's there every time. This is the least burnt rubber Pinotage I've ever had. It's there, undeniably, even dominant, but not as aggressive as other ones I've had. It's even pleasant (!!) The smokiness is not unattractive - almost like Côte Rôtie. Fortunately there are many other virtues as well: rich, deep, thick, almost treacly. Powerful. Still young. For sure this will age well. The fruit is intense and concentrated, and the wine has length and determination. Impressive and distinctive, although lacking freshness for my palate. How a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault, two almost completely antithetical varieties, produces this rather bizarre concoction is beyond my ken. (2241 views)
Tasted by Somm David T on 4/25/2019 & rated 94 points: Nice soft, ripe; blackberries, dark cherries, black plum, blue fruits, raspberries & strawberries. Very soft and understated baking spices, some black licorice, dark rich soil, sweet vanillin, steep fruit tea, light, fresh herbaceous notes, mint and beautiful fresh and withering dark and red florals.

The body is full, juicy lush with soft, rounded, sweet tannins. Beautiful! Ripe; blackberries, dark cherries, black plum, blue fruits, raspberries, strawberries, hints of purple fruits, very soft and understated baking spices, notes of black licorice, dark rich soil, sweet vanillin, steep fruit tea, light, fresh herbaceous notes, dark spice that has mellowed over 10 years, mint with beautiful fresh and withering dark and red florals. The acidity is excellent. The finish is gorgeous, balanced fruit & earth. It’s delicious ripe with soft dark spice on the long set.

Tasted at Kanonkop. (1991 views)
Tasted by NickBurwood on 9/5/2018 & rated 91 points: First from this case of one of my favourite wines. 2hrs aerated decant.
Just hitting its (almost invariably) very long plateau. Focussed blackcurrant and plum with cigar tobacco overtones and a touch of Pinotage lily-florals. Smoke. Integrated fine grainy oak and precise tannins all contribute to making this vintage particularly refined and complex.
Excellent and enjoyable now but should gain a point or two more over the next 5yrs or so as it opens up even more. Overall should easily make 20yrs from vintage at a high level. 91+?+ (2198 views)
Tasted by Mnawacki on 6/9/2018 & rated 90 points: Very easy drinking, big round fruit with well integrated tannins. 30 minutes decant sufficient, nice accompaniment to grilled meats. (2165 views)
Tasted by lmerriner on 8/28/2017 & rated 92 points: Always a favorite Pinotage of mine. This year had a strong wood note that spiked the flavors and really made it interesting. (2734 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 1/25/2017 & rated 91 points: PnP dark red with a fruit filled nose. Palate is full bodied and rich but in a interesting way. Fruit with some spice and a nice finish. Alcohol seemed much higher than 14%. (3238 views)
Tasted by KAP on 8/23/2016 & rated 91 points: Super smoke (3655 views)
Tasted by esquilo on 4/1/2016 & rated 92 points: Redondo. Excelente custo-benefício. (4008 views)
Tasted by KAP on 3/10/2016 & rated 91 points: Smokey. (3772 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 1/1/2016 & rated 92 points: Dark ruby red. Nose was coated with dark berries and chalk. Moderate plus tannins (7/10) and full body. Slightly dry with a very long finish. Well balanced and perfectly structured. Perfect example of what an excellent Pinotage is! Absolutely delicious. Drink till 2029. (3220 views)
Tasted by Andrew67 on 12/29/2015 & rated 91 points: Nice fruit definition, well rounded. Red fruits and plums. Not the most complex wine around, but very pleasant. (2450 views)
Tasted by SvenWine on 8/6/2015 & rated 93 points: - Crimsom color and aromas of blackberry, cherry, oak and butterscotch. It's balanced and has flavours of raisin, alcohol, smokey, tobacco and blackberry with a medium/full body. Satin-Like texture with a medium finish. (2516 views)
Tasted by jrick on 7/5/2015 & rated 91 points: Seriously good stuff, very serious, nuanced and long. Nose had cherry and cola and overall dark fruit. Taste had plum, cherries and tobacco. M avis and M+ tannins. Really well done oak treatment. (2002 views)
Tasted by KAP on 12/31/2014 & rated 90 points: Smokey (2699 views)
Tasted by Giggs on 10/2/2014 & rated 92 points: Not decanted, but probably would have benefited from 45 minutes to 2 hours. A great vintage for Kanonkop and all of the Coastal Region, tight and packed with fruit and dry extract, and still very tannic on the finish. Has the characteristic smoky-nutty-sweet banana, tobacco leaf, and plum sauce of Pinotage. Reminds me a bit of the 2003, but not quite as ripe. This is a more classic, even-growing vintage and should age nicely. Needs time, but I suspect it will be worth the wait. 92-93 points. Drink 2017-2030. (2862 views)
Tasted by Jayarr on 4/14/2014 & rated 91 points: My last bottle. Farewell my friend. (3432 views)
Tasted by cab blends on 2/15/2014 & rated 91 points: Blind home wine tasting with MOT Scoring sheet: Dark bright red - this was the second night of this wine. Decanted 24 hours before for 5 hours and then resealed.

Smooth and velvety with good tannins - 7/10. Violets on the nose which gave an indication of Pinot or Pinotage. Moderately long finish.

See notes from the previous night's pinotage tasting - this was not as good at the 2006 and maybe needs some more time to rest. (3699 views)
Tasted by cab blends on 2/14/2014 & rated 89 points: Blind home wine tasting with Scoring (sets of Horizontals - Napa Cab & Pinotage) (Our home): Little to no nose which is unusual for a Pinotage. Although it does open up a little over time. Ultimately very similar to the 06 in body - more tannins (6/10). The 06 won the taste off between the two given the great aromas and bouquet supported by the same bodies. (3626 views)
