Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.4 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 46 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by cephomer on 8/13/2023: Drank at Copake with lunch yesterday. Pretty yellow color in glass. Reticent nose, slight aromas of citrus. No petrol. More oily, viscous & bigger weight on the palate than expected, lots of green apple fruit with notes of lime. A bit sweet on the long finish. Drinking nicely right now. Nice, easy drinking inexpensive riesling that has held up very well. (239 views)
Tasted by juffer on 3/29/2022 & rated 89 points: Nose is restrained. Maybe some lemon oil with coaxing. Pleasant mid weight mouth. Delicate but fairly long finish is still doing well with a touch of herbal bitterness. Not complex by Donnhoff standards, but very pleasant to drink. (547 views)
Tasted by UpfromtheCellar on 1/11/2021 & rated 89 points: Nice enough I suppose with a hint of petroleum on the nose, lots of crackling acids (somewhat muted) and sweet fruit still playing together nicely. It's surprising/not surprising how well these Kabinett's hold up. I have a few more bottles left and will be in no hurry to open them. (1032 views)
Tasted by collin on 1/14/2017: I very much enjoyed this. It's got a savory finish that keeps me coming back for more. And is remarkably fresh for 15 yrs old. Maybe a bit too open knit on the midpalate, but that's really a nit for this wine. (2260 views)
Tasted by nywine68 on 12/1/2016 & rated 90 points: Nice Riesling. Good balance between sweetness and acidity without being overly sweet or acidic. Still very young and vibrant with absolutely no hint of age despite its 14 years. Peach flavors with a short/medium finish. (2405 views)
Tasted by UpfromtheCellar on 10/20/2016 & rated 89 points: A hint of petrol on the nose, medium sweet, acids mellowing away, light but not cloying. Lacks punch.

I guess I am not a big Riesling fan no matter how hard I try, no matter which one I buy, no matter how famous the producer is, no matter how much it cost. Its just OK. As in not bad but not great either.

I scored it as high as I did because its held up well for 14 years. (2343 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 11/13/2015 & rated 93 points: WIML93

Tasted non blind.

Light yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of diesel, apricot and peach. Flavors of peach, kumquat and a little bit of cherry on the finish. Bright acidity, full bodied. Drink or hold. (3509 views)
Tasted by NoTrollingerPlease on 10/17/2015 & rated 87 points: Private Tasting (@Private location): Past peak IMHO. Not flawed but it lacks acidity to give it a higher score. (2419 views)
Tasted by cephomer on 12/4/2014 & rated 89 points: Cepages Holiday Tasting: Champagne & Riesling (New York City): I brought this to our Cepages holiday tasting. A bit of petrol & feint floral notes on the nose. Sweetness, but lacking somewhat in acidity. Some tartness, especially at the back end, but a bit on the flabby side. (might have waited too long to open this one). Not a great wine due to lack of balance and complexity. Too much sweetness, too little acidity to balance it. (3058 views)
Tasted by DoubleMagnum on 8/9/2014 & rated 91 points: Lovely lean Kabinett with both sugar and acid in balance. Great wine for a Summer evening. (2623 views)
Tasted by pifcho on 8/8/2014 & rated 92 points: This is a great kabinett! Flinty nose with quince notes. Lite to medium bodied, with great vibrancy, precision and modest sweetness. Long and expressive, it is drinking great on pop and pour. (2510 views)
Tasted by juffer on 2/28/2012 & rated 92 points: Most stiking feature was an unusual minty finish. Otherwise relatively restrained. Very enjoyable, but I suspect this may be in a dumb phase, and will improve substantially with a few more years. (3490 views)
Tasted by BradE on 12/24/2011: Riesling: #3. Drunk side by side with Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese. Initially the OB simply outclassed this bottle, and it was somewhat simple. While decent, it just didn't have much of a personality. But we left about half of each bottle for dinner, and with an hour of air time, the OL really improved. (3977 views)
Tasted by devraj on 12/31/2010 & rated 90 points: Pale yellow color. Ripe nose of citrus (tangerine and lemons) and minerals. Rich, fleshy palate with peaches, candied citrus and minerals with the weight/ripeness of Spatlese. This should gain further complexity with age. (3383 views)
Tasted by salil on 6/2/2010 flawed bottle: Corked. Score another one for romance and the Portuguese menace. (3234 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 4/4/2010: Pale greeney white. Fresh, floral nose, all wetstone and tropical fruit. Nicely sweet whilst retaining kabinet weight and freshness. Very drinkable. This is ripe and rounded on the attack to mid-palate whilst retaining a lovely balancing acidity and good line on the finish. Ready but lots of life yet. Top *** (3399 views)
Tasted by MRichman on 11/7/2009: Crisp, very clean. Green apple, tart pineapple. Beautiful acid offsets restrained tropical fruit. As good as kabinett gets. Drinking great, could continue to age.
A-/B+ (2527 views)
Tasted by La Grappe on 5/4/2009 & rated 87 points: Fresh, lively, with attractive, sweetish fruit: lemon and lime. This is a charming wine, with good fruit and acidity. Moderate length. (2355 views)
Tasted by subir on 3/4/2009: The cork fell apart as it was being pulled, seems some of the sugars had adhered it pretty firmly to the sides of the bottle. I had to rip into it and then filter the wine through a coffee filter. By the time I was done, it had been double flash decanted. Very annoying, need to figure out a better way to do this. (2369 views)
Tasted by salil on 2/20/2009 & rated 91 points: Very pale yellow-green colour and tastes as young as it looks. Beautiful green apple, citrus and pine cone flavours over a core of slatey minerals and green herbal notes with refreshing acidity and a silken texture in the mouth. Finishes very long with just a hint of sweetness. (2538 views)
Tasted by mmasterson on 1/31/2009 & rated 91 points: Rich Kabinett...green apples, peaches and minerals...very nice with good balance of acid and sweetness...I left it for a couple hours in the decanter before serving which I think it deserves (2451 views)
Tasted by bprosenberg on 5/30/2008 & rated 90 points: A nice wine. A bit rich for a Kabinett, but with enough acidity to balance things out. (2724 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 3/25/2007 & rated 91 points: WIML91. No tasting notes. Lovely little Kabinett. 1 bottle left and I might wine-searcher additional bottles. (3163 views)
Tasted by SVW on 3/2/2007 & rated 89 points: Enjoyed this Donnhoff as always, though this bottle didnt have the same haunting kersone notes as before which was missed on the palate. Good value as always. recommend this though nevetheless. (2751 views)
Tasted by BradKNYC on 11/20/2006: Roy Hersh comes to town- Raveneau, Donnhoff, Pegau, Beaucastel & more ensue. (Il Corso): Fairly tight on the nose, but it did show some mineral, yellow fruit and flower aromas with just a touch of petrol. Nicely vivid on the palate. The wine is mineral-driven, but there's also lip-smacking lime and passion fruit flavors, along with the prerequisite acidity. Still, like most '02 German Rieslings, I find it a touch loosey goosey in the middle, but this is good stuff. A-. (2237 views)

Rockss and Fruit (5/4/2004)
(Donnhoff Oberhauser Leistenberg Kabinett) White flowers, peach pit, other pitted fruits. Sweet apple on the fat, lush and very ripe palate. Little bit of an almost apple cider spice quality on the finish. Tremendous minerality and complexity to this wine.

Dönnhoff

Producer website

U.S. Importer (add'l info)

As a help to those who purchase and cellar these wines, let it be noted that the 'Goldkapsule' does not ofen designate a higher quality bottling from the producer Dönnhoff. Herr Dönnhoff uses gold capsules on about 99 percent of the l bottlings of certain richer wines from the vineyards Oberhauser Brücke and Niederhauser Hermannshöhle and perhaps some others. Therefore it is usually unneccessary and misleading to use the term 'Goldkapsule' with Dönnhoff wines, currently. Although, just to be confusing, David Bueker mentions that there may be one or two exceptions, especially in 2001 and 2003 vintages, where Donnhoff produced "white capsule" auslesen from the Leistenberg and Dellchen vineyards (later Dellchen auslesen have gone to the gold capsules - e.g. 2006). To have to list my notes on a Cellartracker page that has a non-necessary and meaningless 'gold capsule' designation is highly irritating for me, as I feel that if I list it correctly it won't even be picked up by a search.

Another example of the confusion above is with the frequent multiple bottlings of Eisweine from the Brücke vineyard. There were at least three bottlings in 1998 and three in 2002. They occur when prolonged cold snaps allow harvesting on successive days. Usually one of these is designated the 'regular' Eiswein and the best one is sent to the Auction. Each typically has a different style. They are informally referred to by the day of the week on which they were harvested. Thus in 1998 there was a 'Samstag' Eiswein, and one for 'Sonntag' and also 'Montag'. The last named is extremely powerful, and extremely expensive; it is the Auction lot.

It is STRONGLY URGED then that when referring to Dönnhoff wines one refers to the AP number If this terminology is not used, identity can be impossible to determine. JHT

#2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)

Nahe
