Community Tasting Notes (average 88.3 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 102 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by flund on 4/19/2015 & rated 88 points: Mycket primärfrukt. Kan sparas flera år till. (890 views)
Tasted by MLipton on 12/3/2014: Still quite primary upon opening, the wine developed some notes of olive with aeration. Good acidity and a full mouthfeel promise a lot of life ahead for this wine, but with enough air it's quite delicious now, too. (1896 views)
Tasted by eljocco on 10/18/2014 & rated 90 points: Fortfarande väldigt fylld av frukt. (1850 views)
(1873 views)
Tasted by Ardross on 9/13/2014 & rated 91 points: Textbook Syrah . (2241 views)
90. (2191 views)
Tasted by Ramberg on 6/25/2014 & rated 88 points: Smokey nose, smoked ham, smoked sausages, herbs, cough medicine, olives, obvious burnt oak with vanilla and some rubber notes.
On the palate deep and powerful dark blue and black fruit, ripe red plums, oak spices and a smoky touch.
This is somewhat marked by the vintage, and will need time to come around.
Rather big and bold right now, in the typical 2009 style. (2170 views)
Tasted by PSPatrick on 1/3/2014 & rated 88 points: “Mixed Bag of Rhône Wines”-Tasting, Flight 3, Wine 2 (non-blind), in January 2014. The wine was dark ruby in colour and offered an expressive nose of burned rubber, red fruit, cherry, blackberry, coffee, spices, liquorice, leather and roasted note. On the flavourful palate the wine showed red fruit, cherry, raspberry and raspberry effervescent powder, paired with medium-plus acidity, medium-plus medium-grained tannin and good length. A medium- to full-bodied, balanced, medium-complex, well-structured wine. Drink now and over the next four to five years. (2774 views)
(2583 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 11/29/2013: finally opening up a bit (2591 views)
Tasted by dmalcolm on 10/27/2013 & rated 84 points: Red and dark fruits, peppery, and a little dry and austere. Good by unremarkable. (2639 views)
Tasted by Ramberg on 9/21/2013 & rated 88 points: Nice nose with somewhat warm but typical Syrah characteristics with smoke, bacon, herbs, olives and white and black pepper tones.
The palate however, at this point anyway, is slightly disappointing, compared to previous vintages tasted.
Perhaps a bit closed down on the palate at this point?
Still young of course, and will (might)hopefully improve, but not really up to the same bang for the buck as I thought the 2008 for instance showed.
This is something I have noticed in Graillot’s other Crozes too, La Guiraude, that has showed better in previous vintages.
Still, nice Northern Rhône wine, with potential down the road.
Let’s hope for improvement, as I really have enjoyed this wine in previous vintages.

Tasted by Anonymous on 9/19/2013 & rated 89 points: PnV & drank over 1.5 hours. Floral fragrance framed by notes of tart red cherry, graphite, white pepper, earth & herbs. Tannins well integrated w/good mix of acidity, medium-bodied & a medium finish. Fruit slightly reticent, but grew w/more air. Made in a more traditional way, & think this should continue to improve over next few years. (970 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 9/18/2013: Notes of pepper and pencil shavings. That black magic marker you'd take a whiff of at school. Very little fruit on the nose or palate. Very nice structure, however. A very well-made wine; just not my cup of tea. (2083 views)
Tasted by henrygjeffreys on 9/17/2013: smoky nose, plums
very fresh feminine, light
fruit, fun
still very primary

Tasted by Anonymous on 8/12/2013 & rated 90 points: P&P at restaurant, so conditions not conducive for noting color. Pulled from its slumber in the cellar and with no aeration, to my surprise the bouquet is singing Northern Rhone Syrah, with black olive, blackberry but also some red raspberry notes, roasted herbs, distinct blood iron, beef juice, black pepper, and minerals. A well-delineated and memorable nose I wanted to smell again and again. On the palate there was dense blackberries and licorice, with lots of blood, minerals, meat and some earth. Excellent concentration, some tangy acidity, and drying tannins that muscle stronger in the finish. Simply marvelous with loads of savory flavors and an excellent pairing with pairing with Polpette pasta and meathead pizza prepared in Northern Italy style. I would have scored it 91 but the finish tapers off rather quickly, which is a surprise given the concentration of flavors in the attack. Easily fulfilled its price point of 25. (2226 views)

Tasted by Haggis on 4/22/2013 & rated 90 points: A beautiful young syrah. Wonderful fruit, with raspberry, plum, pepper, and meat. The nose reveals a fragrance such that I thought it might be blended with a little viognier; however, I have learned that this is 100% syrah. The perfume is wonderful. This is an easy to drink wine when young, but it has the stuffing to age for a good 10 years. Grapes are hand-picked, unstemmed with pumping-over for Crozes Hermitage. I bought this one bottle just to see what it's like. I'll definitely be buying more. (1296 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 4/20/2013: About 1.5 years since my last bottle, and my first thought about this one is that it has lost its high notes, those N. Rhone Syrah floral and herb notes to the nose that are captivating and unique to Rhone Syrah. On the palate, this seems to have shifted from blue Syrah fruit to more black with traces of blue. This wine is good, but not special. On the second night, this has better focus and some tannins have emerged which better define the wine, along with a touch of red fruit to the palate, as well as brighter acidity than the first night. Good, but nothing especially memorable. I've not been as captivated as others by the 2009 N. Rhone vintage, finding it good but showing some degree of softness, and this wine seems to be in-line with my view, although the emergence of the structure on the second night would appear to cast doubts on that view.  Tasted by Conde on 4/16/2013 & rated 90 points: Härlig doft av mörka bär och viol.
Tasted by jtinto on 2/15/2013 & rated 90 points: Fresh, balancing acidity, medium weight, spice, medium long finish, tangy. Terrific value. (2514 views)
Tasted by rdewolff on 2/7/2013 & rated 90 points: Très joli vin a bon rapport qualité-prix.
(2266 views)
Tasted by Samsara on 2/2/2013 & rated 85 points: Sec, moyennement corsé, fruité et épicé. (2051 views)
Tasted by Henrycastro on 1/11/2013 & rated 90 points: Great olive on the nose. Smell some collection of herbs. Great smooth taste with balanced acidity. Glad to have 2 more bottles in the cellar. (2313 views)

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Rousanne, and Viognier.
