Tasted by walkerjfw on 12/31/2012 & rated 92 points: New year's Eve with a great group of people! Decanted for about 2 1/2 hours. Served with my smoked sausage cassoulet, needed something to please the crowd with enough guts for the spice. Turned out this did the trick. The extra decant time here made a huge difference from the last bottle. When we got to this wine at dinner it was really opened up and drinking beautifully.

Dark/inky color. Plush nose (especially on the decant). Consistent with prior notes - darker fruits, cherry and some earth/wood on the nose. Got more length on the finish with these bottles. Crowd loved it. Longer decant here made the difference. The wine is drinking well now and will probably continue to improve. last bottle form this batch, may look for some more (3682 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 5/6/2012 & rated 89 points: My first bottle of a batch purchased from the winery at release. Took about an hour to open up but proved to be decent wine. Darker fruits, cherry and some earth/wood on the nose. Medium length on the finish. My guess is it will evolve a bit more.

Nickel&Nickel keeps it interesting with the single vineyard offerings. Not all will hit it out of the park but are usually good enough to make it worth buying. My experience is they develop at 8+ years and add some complexity. (3862 views)
Tasted by huntly on 5/9/2009 & rated 90 points: The Vogt vineyard cab had a lovely full cherry nose, with some wood chips and a bit of tar. the mid-palate was not a nuanced experience with dark berries, tar, and some full on tannins. Overall, though the wine lacked much complexity and the tongue began to lose interest. The finish was of average length, with good structure and fruit. Overall, I suppose we were slightly disappointed, but will try again in a year. (4503 views)
Tasted by winoj on 9/21/2008 & rated 88 points: Deeply disappointed in this bottle. Opened it up with some wino friends of mine and tannis were quite weak and the wine simply did not stand up well at all to cheese, let alone steak for dinner. A bit past it's prime I assume. Ok wine for everyday drinker, but for $68 and high ratings it was not the wine that I had hoped for! (4401 views)
Tasted by schnittle on 6/14/2008 & rated 92 points: Great nose of dark fruits Beautifully balanced. Long finish. (4494 views)
Tasted by David S on 12/30/2006 & rated 94 points: a great Cal Cab - great nose, opened beautifully as the night went on - could use more time (1884 views)
Tasted by MBannon on 12/2/2005 & rated 93 points: 02 California Cabs (Liner & Elsen, Portland OR): Deep cherry aroma. Plush stuff, but lacking just a bit in the mid-palate, at least for a $74 wine. Needs time, obviously. (3345 views)

Nickel & Nickel

Producer website

The Nickel & Nickel winery, founded in 1997 but born from a tradition of exceptional winemaking, is devoted to creating wines that articulate the singular expressions of the vineyards in Oakville and beyond.

Established by the partners of Far Niente, Nickel & Nickel is based on a philosophy of producing 100 percent varietal, single-vineyard wines that best express the distinct personality of each vineyard. The winery’s current releases include Napa Valley Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Russian River Valley Chardonnay, Syrah and Zinfandel.

Nickel & Nickel represents a distinct departure from the flagship Far Niente estate wines that are produced from a combination of vineyards and varietals. The partners also felt it necessary to have a winemaker devoted to each winery – Far Niente, Dolce and Nickel & Nickel -- in order to produce the quality wines that are their hallmark. These factors, along with a noticeable upsurge in the market’s interest in vineyard-designated wines, led to the launch of Nickel & Nickel as a separate brand.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
