Community Tasting Notes (average 90.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 21 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by dalemosier on 2/19/2013 & rated 92 points: Delightful full bodied pinot; not as fruit forward as typical pinot. Let it breath 30-60 minutes (557 views)
Tasted by Rich S on 12/27/2012 & rated 91 points: Consistent notes with previous bottle. A very balanced and food friendly pinot. Drinking very well right now. (727 views)
Tasted by Sniffy-Sniff on 11/22/2012 & rated 91 points: This wine rocks for 25 bones. Very much a Kosta Browne look-alike, and for less than half the tariff I'm a bigger fan. Needs about 45 minutes of air before it comes to life. Has the chops to pair with grilled meats or a pan seared rack of lamb. (878 views)
Tasted by Rich S on 10/26/2012 & rated 91 points: Dark ruby color. Definite pinot nose of cherry, strawberry, a touch of earthy forest floor notes and some sweet spices. Similar flavors on the palate with a definite red fruit profile but with a nice balance of earthy, mineral driven flavors with a nice kiss of vanilla oak on the back end. Medium+ acid, medium tannins and a smooth mouthfeel. Sonoma Coast pinots tend to bring out the best in Cali pinot for me due to the higher acid levels. Great qpr pinot at the price paid. (1052 views)
Tasted by domco on 7/1/2012 & rated 86 points: Seem to have way overrated the first bottle of this we had. Not sure if it was the bottle, the meal, the company, or all of the above, but we didn't enjoy this bottle nearly as much. I liked it better than C for sure. It's a big wine, not delicate... much better day 2, so would give it a bit more time. (1582 views)
Tasted by dalemosier on 4/19/2012 & rated 90 points: Excellent pinot, probably in its prime although could last 1-2 years more. Great balance, slightly fruity for my preference, but classic pinot done well. (1558 views)
Tasted by Mugwump on 2/9/2012 & rated 91 points: Tart cherry and strawberry, with some hints of earth and minerality. Nice acid balance. Good value. (1839 views)
Tasted by wineglas on 10/28/2011 & rated 88 points: Hennepin Lake's Annual Tasting (Tons of Napa Cabs) (Minneapolis, MN): Not a bad base bottling. Spice, floral, forest floor and minerals. Medium finish. (3130 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 10/27/2011 & rated 90 points: This thing is dark, very dark in color. I can smell the earth, cranberries, toasted oak, ripe plum and cherry. Medium full body with a soft roundness and silky nature. Big flavor here. The aroma to palate transition is nice. Throw in some flint and grapy-ness and that'll sum it up. The acidity is tame yet does it's job. Let this one open up. It drinks so much better after half an hour. Overall this thing boasts 14.6% abv which is way too high for my liking. A concentrated PN? Not what I'm looking for. It does offer much enjoyment, I can't deny this fact. (2588 views)
Tasted by RobertDwyer on 6/28/2011 & rated 87 points: Disappointingly dour personality. Lacks richness you'd think would come with the color and replaces it with a peculiar bitter finish. (3181 views)
Tasted by Bob Fyke on 5/12/2011 & rated 92 points: Nuanced and elegant with a complex nose of strawberry/ cherry tart, warm earth, grilled meat, some clean floral notes, charred wood, and a tiny hint of barn floor. A solid mid-weight with a somewhat soft texture followed by gentle tannins and acid. The palate has spicy cherry fruit, aromatic charcoal, and sandelwood, with a finish that's solid and lingers for a bit. Complete and very enjoyable, with nothing over-the-top. Probably not enough stuffing to age long term, though...Incredibly, after three days, this is still beautiful, with lovely herbs, sweet strawberry aromas and aromatic charred wood. The palate is still balanced, with complete structure and enjoyable cedar / sandelwood aromatics. (2962 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, Austria, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

California

California Wines (Wine Institute of California)

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in over 100 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
