Community Tasting Notes (average 92.9 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 66 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Drankthewholebottle on 5/27/2022 & rated 96 points: You can see the well integrated texture that’s about to coat your palate in the bright rim. The nose is sharp and lively with sweet black fruit and rich wood. It’s lush then gripping in the mouth with black fruit, tea and mushroom. Took a couple of hours to open up and likely will hold on for a bit. (548 views)
Tasted by Redguy on 2/5/2022: I've been skipping over this bottle for years when rifling through the cellar looking for something to open. While I love Scott's Torrin wines, they consistently rank among my favorites from the area, it is the vintage I am not a fan of. This bottle showed in line with my expectations: Large scaled, with deep, fleshy, super-ripe fruit bordering on too sweet, smoky barrel notes, and those clunky tannins that seem to be a signature of the vintage. There's tons of meat on these bones, but the bones protrude nonetheless. My overall impression is of a massive, high-quality, fruit-forward wine that is out of balance and still disjointed 12+ years post-harvest. My last '09... so glad that's over. (600 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 4/29/2020: I don't want to score this wine because it was clearly a corked/bad bottle! (1143 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 1/20/2020 & rated 94 points: Terrific wine from a wonderful winery... so very much life left and time to go! (1212 views)
Tasted by CotoDC on 9/4/2018 & rated 94 points: This wine is all about tannin quality at this point, big black fruits with big but softened tannins make this wine an absolute addiction. Still has a ton of life ahead of it but there was so little produced it may not matter. Will hold remaining bottle for a few years. (1977 views)
Tasted by PinotPaul on 12/22/2016 & rated 92 points: Smooth, still full of fruit. Wonderful. (2753 views)
Tasted by Drankthewholebottle on 1/9/2016 & rated 95 points: Opaque purple drank with a bright ruby rim. Nose of blackberry liquor and camphor earthiness. Dark fruit that's still plenty fruity with dusted top notes. There's some restrained creaminess creeping through. Thick and rich palate with smoky oak. Wish I could articulate further but that's why I drink this stuff. (3477 views)
Tasted by Wine Sparty on 1/5/2016 & rated 91 points: Decanted for a little more than an hour before having with grilled skirt steak, then consumed over the next 4 hours. Nose has nice dark fruit with a bit of earthiness in there. Taste is nice as well - has the dark fruit, but it is not overpowering. This is a very good Syrah - my only quibble to take it to the next level is some more complexity. (3061 views)
Tasted by Kusian on 11/17/2015 & rated 96 points: Luscious, very elegant and smooth but still has potential to age. Still has tannins that will allow this wine to mellow in the years to come. A great wine! (3082 views)
Tasted by STM82 on 7/18/2015 & rated 95 points: Decanted for an hour. Ready to go! The same greatness we've come to enjoy from this producer. Hits all the notes with a persistent finish and streak of acidity keeping everything in check. (2878 views)
Tasted by PinotPaul on 7/6/2015 & rated 93 points: Big, big wine. Deep purple. Still has a lot of time to mature. (1903 views)
Tasted by cpsmith33 on 5/9/2015 & rated 91 points: Decanted and drank over a few hours.
Definitely ripe style, but I enjoyed it.
Some Syrah characteristics shined through, but overall hard to pin, except for dark ripe fruits. (1673 views)
Tasted by topher2411 on 5/2/2015 & rated 90 points: Very ripe. I generally have trouble picking out varietal characteristics when wines are this ripe, but this did have some classic Syrah savory aromas along with its dark fruit. Notable that the alcohol is not obvious on the nose or palate, except for the syrupy mouth feel. Nice tannic grip on the finish still. This is not really my cup of tea, but I think it is very good for the style. (1626 views)
Tasted by jeagle on 2/24/2015 & rated 89 points: Decanted through an aerator 10 hours prior to tasting. The muted fruit tasted mature through a heavy haze of tannin so I doubt this wine will ever come together. Personally, I think this style is a mistake and certainly eliminates all but the most optimistic of the senior crowd. So many Paso wines are beautifully accessible after several years. I truly wish this producer were one of them. (2566 views)
Tasted by samiamx_1999 on 1/24/2015 & rated 90 points: Given the notes, I ran it through a bev wizard (magnets), into a Houdini (aerator), and into one of those upside down "T" decanters for about 5 hours yesterday, before tasting it blindly against a bunch of other great wines, Linne Calodo Cherry Red, Booker, a Calcareous Tres Violet, and a WA 100 point Spanish Garnacha, the latter of which blew the field away IMHO. Had it before steak and with. It finished 3rd, and tannins were not the problem. From what I dimly remember now, it had good heft but just ok fruit. (1577 views)
Tasted by pdemaio on 12/23/2014 & rated 93 points: Big and rich. Long finish, with good integration. (1627 views)
Tasted by Go RedSox on 12/5/2014 & rated 83 points: What am I missing. This is totally out of balance. I get heat and muted fruit. Total disappointment (1820 views)
Tasted by wino121 on 9/2/2014 & rated 95 points: A show stopper, I'm getting on the alloc-list today!
I would advise to only drink this wine by itself, as you will not
stop drinking this until it's gone.. (1985 views)
Tasted by mhewitt on 8/16/2014: This wine has shut down in the last 6 months. Hold at least a year before trying. Was epic last time I had it but was super tight last night. (1662 views)
Tasted by mhewitt on 5/25/2014 & rated 98 points: This is an incredible wine. Massive concentration, incredibly long finish and very well balanced. (1928 views)
Tasted by STM82 on 5/7/2014: This wine was really hard to rate due to my inability to give it time. It shows what we all love about Torrin but was not giving up a thing after a vinturi decant, four hours, and then "vinturied" back into bottle to enjoy at a restaurant. It showed beautiful dark deep fruit on the nose, but was hollow and not composed. It was not until the last glass when it showed it's power, finesse, elegance, and depth. It was almost as if a light switch was flipped and it figured it's "go time baby!". Hold for another couple years or decant for the better part of a day. With time or decant 96+ (1741 views)
Tasted by The Wine Write on 3/9/2014 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured at restaurant. Dense, almost black hue. Spicy black cherry nose. Peppery red fruit on the palate with a very long finish. Very nice. (2069 views)
Tasted by GMGnyc on 12/22/2013 & rated 94 points: drinking terrific and has legs. gives all the plush deliciousness you expect from a high end syrah from this region but without being overbearing, hot or sweet. still tastes like a syrah. great wine. (2083 views)
Tasted by Etonian on 11/17/2013 & rated 92 points: Slow ox for 4-6 hours. Full throttle wine with lots of jammy fruit and heat. With more time roasted coffee and milk chocolate. Long finish. Very enjoyable if you like this style of hedonistic wine. (2036 views)
Tasted by kennyg on 11/14/2013 & rated 93 points: Just had a Sinequanon the weekend before and while it was fantastic this was probably just as good and less than a third the price! Does need a bit of a decant as suggested. Suspect a few more years to prime drink window (1851 views)

2009 Torrin Akasha

Vineyard Notes: 85% Torrin Estate Vineyard / 15% James Berry Vineyard
Winemaker Notes: 95% Syrah / 5% Grenache

For such a small property, Torrin vineyard enjoys the benefit of hillsides of nearly every possible exposure. This allows us to match up varietals to their ideal growing environment. Therefore, we have chosen to put all of our Syrah on our coolest aspects. The 2009 Akasha is a blend of our Syrah clone 174 from an east facing slope and Syrah clone 877 from a north facing slope. A small amount of Syrah from the incredible James Berry Vineyard adds yet another layer of intrigue. And for the first time, we have opted to blend in 5% Grenache from our estate simply to lift the initial aromatic presence of the wine. The result is simply fantastic. The wine highlights the best of Syrah with beautiful black fruits, intoxicating spice, unbelievable texture and depth on the palate and a finish that is remarkably energetic for such a potentially imposing wine. The wine was fermented with approximately 25% stem inclusion and aged on its lees in French 228L barriques for 18 months. With nearly one year of bottle age on release the wine is impressive, but will continue to evolve beautifully over the course of the next decade.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
