Lovely perfume of ripe red berries, cherry, loam and a hint of tobacco. On the palate this has tons of grip but also very good acidity, providing excellent definition and focus. Whilst quite powerful, the tannins have an elegant and refined side to them, perhaps influenced by the stems. Great balance. Already a classy effort, this will be even better in 8+ years. Seemed fairly closed down at the moment, even after left in the glass for an hour or so and some slow ox'ing of the bottle before that. Fruit is muted with lots of earthy notes and good acidity. Tannins are quite prominent at the moment and the air didn't seem to help tame them much. I can see this turning into something special in the future, but we're probably talking a decade or more. My recommendation would be to lay these down for the long haul. (1954 views)|

Easily the most impressive Ile des Vergelesses I've ever had, and showing more personality at this stage than either the '08 or '05 did, for sure. This has the perfect mix of richness and tension. So much grip and sève to the fruit it seems to stick to the roof of your mouth, but it's also got a great spine that pulls it taut and gives it a fantastic sense of precision. It kept getting more and more refined as it sat in the glass and by the end it was almost satiny, bordering on a grand cru presence. (4051 views)|

Fairly quiet on the nose, and comes across a little boxy and structured, although I didn't pick up any stemmy notes or other telltale whole cluster signatures to give this away as the Chandon de Briailles. It picks up more flesh with air and softens up, too, with the fruit turning a little plummy. (4107 views)|

Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, Austria, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

Pernand-Vergelesses 1er CruThe appellation
At the confluence of two valleys, the appellation of Pernand-Vergelesses, perched between 290 and 360 meters, is in the northern portion of the Côte de Beaune. The AOC Pernand-Vergelesses covers 123 hectares: 90 hectares of red of which 44 are Premier Cru and 53 of white of which 17 are Premier Cru.
“Sous Frétille” has been classified as a Premier Cru since 2001 (but only for white wines.) The word “Frétille” is a derivation of “forestelle”, or forest in old French. Hence, “Sous Frétille” indiquates the geographic location of the parcel, just under the forest.
