Tasted by RAB007 on 2/9/2024 & rated 93 points: Superb. Way over expectations. Candied violets, floral, spices. Maybe at maturity at only 15, but just pull corks and enjoy. (415 views)
Tasted by RAB007 on 2/9/2024 & rated 95 points: Candied violets, floral, spices. Gorgeous. Can't edit last note so will try to delete. (479 views)
Tasted by spnm on 12/25/2023 & rated 96 points: In excellent shape. Wonderful! (513 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 5/27/2023: Vertical/Horizontal Tasting of Chevillon Nuits St. Georges Premier Crus (San Francisco): Ruby. Spicy ripe blueberry on the nose. Medium weight. Beautiful fruit/soil/saline interplay and balance with excellent acidity, fine grained tannins, and excellent length. Wonderful complexity and fluidity already. Delicious, and for me, the top wine of the 12 Chevillons in the first two flights. (1837 views)
Tasted by LB88 on 5/9/2023 & rated 94 points: It was as the previous bottle powerful, layered and long. Great vintage, but can be cellared more. (1130 views)
Tasted by Jonny Cash on 4/14/2023 & rated 95 points: Lovely Nuits Saint Georges, fruit, mushrooms, earth, acid everything on the right place, just starting to make fun. (951 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 3/3/2023 & rated 95 points: Mark's excellent btl at our Old Guys Lunch @ The Kenwood. 5 members in good standing present! DM,MA,LI,JV & CV. We brough the wines we wanted and then figured out how to make the menu work :). The Kenwood's lunch menu is desperately missing some seafood! PnP at venue & slow ox in btl till later course & after food sips & sniffs. A little slow out of the gates but this really came on strong and was still evolving till the end. Aromas of rose petal, berries & forest floor. Packed w/ Grand Cru material! Raspberry, cherry, mineral, mushroom, forest floor & licorice. 13-1/2yrs out this is in the middle of its prime drinking and a complete and stunning pleasure to behold. Paired w/ David's gorgeous 10 Mugnier Clos Marchale this made for a memorable study in Nuit St Geoge 1er royalty and the subtle differences of 2 master producers side by side. Both wines very earthy NSG while The Mugnier seemed to have Freddy's signature silky suave textures. Bravo. My co-wines of the lunch! (1275 views)
Tasted by GuWin on 1/24/2023 & rated 92 points: BYO Centropa (Centropa, Deichmann, Oslo): Lys rød med brunlig skjær. (1293 views)
Tasted by ThomasA on 12/24/2022 & rated 95 points: Best until now. Sherry, licorice and forrest ground, mushrooms. Perfect acidety/fruit balance. (948 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 4/29/2022: Tawny color. Marvelously poised, laid back wine speaking softly but powerfully. Middle weight. Mix of black and red fruit, soil, and citrus with long, gently tannic finish. Very expressive but not yet fully developed-little in the way of secondary much less tertiary notes. I’m glad I tried one and am amazed at how open and supple this was tonight. Outstanding even it might not be the most profound Les Saint Georges. (2021 views)
Tasted by rc@ughey on 11/15/2021 & rated 94 points: Fabulous showing and the future promises even grander fireworks. This is ripe and even a touch sweet, almost like 02, but the balance is superb, with enough acidity and fine structure to keep things in proportion. It also has an inner density that gives this energy and a very bright future indeed. It's long with Grand Cru intensity. (2222 views)
Tasted by robferguson1 on 12/11/2020 & rated 92 points: Stared undecantered , mistake, quiet heavy but mellowed, good but heavyness hid the fruit somewhat. (2288 views)
Tasted by LB88 on 11/13/2020 & rated 94 points: Floral, feminine but only after a one hour decant. Is such a big wine with lovely structure. Definitely a fan and need to get more! Beautiful (2181 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 1/25/2020 & rated 94 points: Had this once before 4yrs ago but this is the first of my 3. Opened a few hours before leaving for dinner and tried slow oxing in blt for 45 minutes. It remained fairly closed so I decanted it for another 2 hours and that did the trick. Then back into the btl until I removed the cork at Kevin's where it sat for 90 minutes+ before we got it. The color is a semi opaque ruby red. Aromas of rose petal, berries and forest floor. Packed with Grand Cru material. Raspberry, cherry, mineral, mushroom, forest floor and licorice. Could maybe use a touch more energy for my palate likely true to the ripe vintage. All & all pretty dam tasty and intriguing. Seems to have room for upside so Ill wait 2-3 years to open my next. (2452 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 1/25/2020 & rated 94 points: Making the Most of Dinner Without Dad (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Medium ruby color. Drank a glass over an hour. Same bottle as Chablis28, so I'll refer you to his note for the full decanting info and a more dietailed note. I will echo his sentiments along with my previous note on this from a few years ago though. Very, very good, high pitched berries on the nose and I mean that in a good way, spice, earthy mushroom, cherry. The palate is medium plus bodied, bright ripe berries but also some more tart currant and cherry fruit, anise, earth and spice. (3094 views)
Tasted by LWI on 11/2/2019 & rated 93 points: Fully mature, lovely and layered. (2036 views)
Tasted by GArpaia on 5/29/2019 & rated 93 points: Fresh and sappy at the same time. Wild small strawberries, spices, dry fruits (figs) and a touch of volatile. Ripe tannins. Great balance.

NB
Dry growing season with consistent warmth and no early season hail damage. (2037 views)
Tasted by vinkeger on 1/12/2019 flawed bottle: Funky nese. Lukter som en svett armhule. Ikke korrekt flaske. (2517 views)
Tasted by burgcamel on 7/7/2018 & rated 94 points: I really enjoyed this wine. While still young, I found it very approachable. Nice red fruit, spice and earth. Well structured with a persistent finish. (2352 views)
Tasted by LWI on 4/21/2017 & rated 94 points: Blind. Deep PN smell, wonderful spice, juicy, complex, splendid. Moderate+ body, airy. Much more developed than the last bottle. (3243 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 2/9/2017 flawed bottle: I noticed quite some bottle variations on the 2009 Les St.Georges and Vaucrains. The best are fresh, ripe and sappy, combining warm vintage charm with earthy complexity. However, quite a few bottles seem tired and evolved. I did not get that variation in other vintages. If you don't own 2009 already, better buy 2010, 12 instead. (3613 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 1/27/2017 & rated 91 points: Pnp. Am much less enthusiastic here than most of the previous reviewers. This came across as very herbal with some earthy notes. Did not seem close but lacked a (sweet) fruit which I found surprising for a 2009. More interesting than attractive. Perhaps not the best bottle? (3299 views)
Tasted by hajoha on 11/9/2016 & rated 92 points: Mye power her - maskulin med skikkelig pondus.
Føles for ungt nå.
Hadde fortjent fokus på egenhånd - druknet litt i dette selskapet av fantastiske modne røde.
92p med oppside. (2944 views)
Tasted by sehill on 12/25/2015: Opened and poured, this wine gave a compelling and outstanding showing. The bouquet shows youthful fruit and spice notes with some underlying maturing elements that give this wine nuance and depth. The aromatics show dark cherry, spice and underlying earth notes. The fruit elements are youthful and detailed. The color is a youthful but slightly tarnished dark ruby that is appropriate for the wines age. The medium (full) bodied palate shows detailed youthful fruit combined with sappy, forest elements on a long finish. Overall the wine shows a rugged, masculine character combined with refined, detailed elements. Outstanding now, this wine will develop and improve with additional bottle age. (3187 views)
Tasted by LWI on 12/9/2015 & rated 94 points: Animal fur on the nose, asian spices, quite big bodied, tannins present, wonderful balance. Masculine wine with great future. (2646 views)

Domaine Robert Chevillon

Producer website

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

The adventure started with Symphorien Chevillon who started working approximately thirty acres of vines at Nuits-Saint-Georges in his own name.
Then, Eugène-François (around 1914), following 2 years of military service and 5 years of war, took over the domain and bought a few plots as Premier Cru.
In 1946, the vines were taken over by the 2 sons (they separated later on).
Maurice bought 2 stills (39) and (46) and became an itinerant distiller. He continued to expand the Domain by buying new plots of Premier Cru.

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
