Tasted by MusicAndWines on 5/2/2022: Gone bad (557 views)
Tasted by travisgm on 6/25/2020 & rated 86 points: Needs a few hours to open up. Pretty good but won’t last much longer. (959 views)
Tasted by Winojunko on 9/18/2017 & rated 92 points: This wine which was god awful in its' youth, has evolved to a very balanced drinkable shiraz. (2140 views)
Tasted by G_Talbot on 9/16/2017 & rated 88 points: Very Good.

Clear, deep, ruby to broad garnet rim, legs.
Clean, developing nose of earth, damson, plum and vanilla.
Dry, medium acid, medium persistent firm tannins, medium (+) alcohol, medium body, medium intensity flavours of damson, blackberry and vanilla. Alcohol sticks out a little on the medium (+) length.

Very good, though alcohol sticks out a little. Further developed than I expected, the whole thing seems a little 'over cooked'.

Screwcap. (1525 views)
Tasted by Bsmith457 on 6/9/2017 & rated 90 points: Deep crimson red colour, little hue. Aroma of dried oak and musk, bay leaf and herbs. Black fruit, raisin and clove. Pepper, licorce and leather. 14.4% alc but not evident in the aroma. Medium body, strong slightly harsh tannin. Acidic finish. The acidicity disappears after a couple of hours and becomes smoothly and slightly fuller. (2132 views)
Tasted by flussier on 9/29/2016 & rated 87 points: Robe bourgogne violacé. Nez sur la violette, fruits mûrs et prune. En bouche on est sur le boisé et le sous-bois. Bonne astringence, besoin être décanté au moins 1h. (2295 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 4/2/2016 & rated 89 points: Nice. Still good performance. Deep dark red/black color. Some fruit on the palate. Medium finish (2306 views)
Excellant vin. Pourrait facilement vieillir encore quelques années selon moi. (2255 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 10/17/2015 & rated 88 points: This bottle was a little bit off. (1691 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 9/10/2015 & rated 90 points: Very nice. Same as last note. (1565 views)
Tasted by CentreIce on 4/5/2015 & rated 91 points: Outstanding bottle. Decanted for 1 hr. Well balanced with black cherry and a slight hint of oak. Wish I had another bottle. (1753 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 2/13/2015 & rated 90 points: Very good. PnP. Needs air. Almost black in color. Powerfull yet smooth, well balanced and nice black/red fruit. Medium finish. (1355 views)
Tasted by LFCHALA on 2/1/2015 & rated 86 points: Bold, high abv and very ripe. (1358 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 9/24/2014 & rated 91 points: This was better than the last bottle. Decanted 1 hour. Drank over 2 days, night in the fridge. Second day the best. Smooth, well balanced and nice black/red fruit. Medium finish. (1550 views)
Tasted by Brettski80 on 9/22/2014 & rated 92 points: Refer previous notes. In prime drinking now. (1526 views)
Tasted by Brettski80 on 6/27/2014 & rated 92 points: Yummy after a little time in air. Savoury spice, big black and red fruits, the oak not overstated and the finish bright, vibrant and earthy. (1583 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 4/7/2014 & rated 89 points: Decanted 2 hours. Medium dark opaque red/purple color. Spice, Cherries, Licorice. Acidic. Medium finish. (1623 views)
Tasted by GlenGarry76 on 1/14/2014: Tastes good. Bro thinks it smells funny (1930 views)
Tasted by Rowchan on 9/1/2013 & rated 87 points: Clear, lovely dark purple with pink rim, streaky thin tears.
Clean, med intensity, with aromas of dark cherries, blackcurrant, sasperilla, whiff of egg yolk, and dark chocolate.
Dry, med body, med + tannins, med alcohol, tiny acidity, with further flavours of dark plum, earthy tones, black pepper, licorice. It has all the makings of a fine Shiraz but body a bit light. However a nice finish (med+) once you give it good time for opening up. Excellent for red meat BBQs on warmer evenings. (1999 views)
Tasted by henrygjeffreys on 4/29/2013: purple red colour
n - spicy, TP, minty
good fragrance, grippy, ripe fruit, plenty of acidity
light-medium body
nicely-balanced,
savoury finish (2496 views)
Tasted by Brettski80 on 4/5/2013 & rated 91 points: - Brick color - A burgundy beauty in disguise. A real unique drop of Mclaren Vale heritage, and what a deal for $13 on a good day. An acidic afterbite may not sit well for some, but paired with the right food, the balance and elegance really begin to shine. The sweet fruits will help carry this wine the distance, and only just coming into drinking space now, but another 5 years and I cannot wait to try it on. Vanilla raspberry tones and dark purple hue with medium length and years to go. A deadarm it's not, but at $13 its a huge hit above anything else in its class. (2372 views)
Tasted by JNgai on 3/7/2013 & rated 81 points: - Crimsom color. It's overly acidic with a light/medium body. Round texture with a medium finish. (2216 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 2/11/2013 & rated 88 points: Blind at store: Black-red opaque; bit of bubble gum, cocoa, anise, pepper; full, ripe, big tannins, with cocoa and meat. Classic, fuller bodied; guessed Aussie Syrah. (2250 views)
Tasted by special juice on 1/25/2013 & rated 88 points: I can understand how this wine has garnered divided opinions, as it is atypical of most Australian Shirazes. It could definitely blindside a drinker who is expecting a dark, rich, inky experience. Instead, this wine delivers incredibly bright cranberry and raspberry flavors accompanied by sharp acidity. I enjoy and appreciate that this wine makes a strong stylistic statement- it is well made and unexpected. This fits perfectly with my tastes but will not appeal to everyone. (2014 views)
Tasted by tomahawk.chop on 1/19/2013 & rated 88 points: Spicy heat, fruit. Good (1644 views)

One of the most significant wineries in McLaren Vale founded in 1912. The winemaking processes of the past have been maintained, capturing the unique small-batch character of the wines and the true flavour of the McLaren Vale region. All grapes, red and white, are basket-pressed. The reds are still traditionally fermented with the grape skins (caps) submerged in open wax-lined concrete fermenters utilising the age-old technique of foot-treading.

Winemaking duties are carried out by fourth-generation Chester d’Arenberg Osborn. In June 2004 Chester’s father, d’Arry was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his contributions to the wine industry and to the McLaren Vale region. After more than 65 consecutive vintages d’Arry is very proud of his achievements in creating an internationally recognised wine brand commonly known as the ‘Red Stripe’ due to the distinctive diagonal red stripe that adorns the label. d’Arenberg’s art of being different extends to a range of fortified and dessert wines, which have legendary status worldwide.

d'Arenberg Shiraz The Footbolt

Before being renamed The Footbolt Shiraz in 1996, the Old Vine Shiraz (as it was then known) was the first wine to use the term ‘Old Vine’.
When this became common practice it was altered to honour a racehorse that changed the Osborn family forever.
The founder of d’Arenberg, Joseph Osborn was a successful racehorse owner and Footbolt was the pride of his stable.
In 1912 he made the hard decision to sell his stable of horses to start d’Arenberg, so it is only fitting we pay homage to Joseph and his prize horse, Footbolt.
