Community Tasting Notes (average 90.4 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 13 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Rob and Meg on 3/5/2013 & rated 88 points: Similar to our last bottle, but seemed to carry a bit more freshness. Lively aromas of sweet raspberry, rosehip, and violets. The palate nicely balances riper mixed berries with underlying savory earthen tones. Though this is somewhat ripe, it performs well in that context. R&M88 (296 views)
Tasted by Rob and Meg on 10/19/2012 & rated 87 points: The nose is contrasting, with sweet raspberry overlying horseradish, balsamic reduction, and violets. Ripe mixed berries open the palate, continuing against underlying elements of bay leaf, lavender, and root vegetables. There is a bit more of cedar presence on the finish in addition to flashes of earth and dried berries. Though medium bodied with adequate acidity, it feels as though the palate needs a bit more direction. This seems to be firmly new world in flavor, and certainly performs within that context.  Tasted by mkmast on 10/17/2012 & rated 92 points: Similar to previous notes. Nose is a little less prominent but the wine is a joy in the glass. (696 views)
Tasted by relieb on 9/8/2012 & rated 92 points: Smooth, well-balanced pinot (831 views)
Tasted by Richard Jennings on 8/4/2012 & rated 89 points: West of West Wine Festival; 8/4/2012-8/5/2012 (Occidental Center for the Arts, Occidental, California): Light medium cherry red color with pale meniscus; sous bois, forest floor nose; tart cherry, forest floor, mineral palate; needs 3 years; medium-plus finish (50% whole cluster) (1037 views)
Tasted by bundydavis on 5/26/2012 & rated 92 points: Fantastic, well balanced Pinot. Womderful fruit, but not overpowering. (1239 views)
Tasted by Tudz Drkl on 4/28/2012 & rated 90 points: What a nose! Pungent and earthy with mushrooms and mint predominating and dark cherry fruit providing a base. On the palate, the wine was very well balanced and rich with dark meaty fruit quietly supported by ample acidity and comfortable tannins. An extremely enjoyable wine. (946 views)
Tasted by iWineReport on 4/28/2012 & rated 90 points: Very pretty with fresh strawberry and wild berries backed by spice, earthy and herb notes. Beautiful and silky on the palate with mouth-watering acidity backing the fruit. Love the juiciness this brings. (Drink 2012-2017) - April, 2012. (JD) (979 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 4/16/2012: Blend of La Cruz and Suacchi vineyard. Sweet pinot fruit nose. Mushroom and black cherry says Ryan. Tart and tangy on the palate. Young, a touch clipped, sweet fruited finish. Seems a bit off, but yet, it is delicious. (1013 views)
Tasted by mkmast on 11/13/2011 & rated 92 points: Love the funk on the nose. Beautiful earthy quality on the nose and the palate. Good acidity to pair with food. A great mushroom with cream or butter wine. Not much to complain about in this wine. (1466 views)
Tasted by RobertDwyer on 7/9/2011 & rated 92 points: Perfectly ripe sweet cherries and pipe tobacco on the nose. Ultra-soft mouthfeel. A little CA Pinot twang with rich fruit flavors on the palate. I sense low acidity levels and hardly any tannins. I enjoyed it. (1951 views)
Tasted by mkmast on 4/22/2011 & rated 91 points: Excellent QPR for this wine. 30 minute decant. A little subdued on the nose. Slightly stemmy and having just a hint of earthiness, the fruit really developed the more air it got. Probably needs more time to really show but the acid and fruit really make it a tasty wine. Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, Austria, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

California

California Wines (Wine Institute of California)

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in over 100 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
