Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 94.1 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 125 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by dhwesley on 4/13/2024 & rated 96 points: Deep reddish-brown, translucent, minimal sediment. Nose is bright and spicy - cloves, violets, tea. Quite balanced, predominant impression of fruit with acid and tannin well behind. Out of the bottle dark cherry, cola, baking spices, good length. Quite drinkable right out of the bottle.

After 4h of decanting it has developed a little. It's on the fruit-forward end for Pauillacs, lively and delicious. The finish is beginning to show interesting notes of coffee and chocolate and the signature Pauillac "funk" is on display. Rich, fresh and well crafted, a real pleasure to drink. (796 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 2/4/2024 & rated 92 points: 2010 Was a Good Vintage in France (Jordan's Place - Chicago IL): Open 6 hours, not decanted. Still firm but tasty, not as exciting as Baron. (2209 views)
Tasted by bobsabayesian on 2/1/2024 & rated 96 points: Dark ruby. M+ intensity of aroma, developing with cedar, vegatal and menthol notes, black fruit, vanilla, red blossoms, hints of chocolate, and spices

Pronounced intensity of flavor, full body, tremendously complex but still balanced, and just lasts and lasts.

I had a shitty day at work and I don't mind the email I'm writing at 9pm. That's how good this wine is.

Still, I hope to wait a year before I drink another. Drink or hold. (2401 views)
Tasted by dream on 1/30/2024 & rated 95 points: Very much like an incarnation of the ’96, this has a higher percentage of Cab Sauv than the ’09 and is a very different wine. It has crisp acids and tons of energy but also great underlying fruit and very refined tannins. Totally more precision than the ’09 but not as layered and supple. To me, the ’10 has everything and isn’t ready yet and will ultimately pass the ’96 in quality. 95+ Commanderie dinner, The Modern (2367 views)
Tasted by Irish_Wine on 11/22/2023 & rated 96 points: Slightly garnet at the rim. Incredible nose with layers of blackcurrant, fine spices and cedar. Showing some development via tobacco and leather notes. Exceptional palate. Beautiful structure. Fresh and delicious with huge persistence on the finish. Starting to enter its drinking window but will only get better with more years in the cellar. (3154 views)
Tasted by KimberJ on 11/14/2023 & rated 93 points: ripe dark fruit. Leather. Balanced all the way around. Acid tannin fruit long finish.

Tasted by Jeff Leve on 11/13/2023 & rated 96 points: The wine has clearly improved with aging as now you find layers of fresh, sweet, currants, leafy tobacco, cedar, and a sprig of mint in the nose, and in the soft, vibrant, chalky palate. Drink from 2025-2050. (3573 views)
 Tasted by pren on 11/11/2023 & rated 91 points: 尝。和15 reserve一起,风格类似,但是没放开。 (2179 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 11/8/2023: I was not moved by the wine or its progress. It was good without opening any doors for complaint, but it was just nondescript and aloof. Its as if the wine is stuck...Theres good balance here and the high acidity is probably creating turtle paced evolution. HOLD_revisit in 5 years+ (2680 views)
Tasted by SimonDong on 11/7/2023 & rated 95 points: elegant, smooth, more red fruit flavors like plum. (1919 views)
Tasted by signotim on 11/6/2023 & rated 97 points: I tasted this twice and there was a difference between the two samples. The first taste had a spectacular minty freshness and felt almost weightless on the palate. The texture was stunning and it had an especially long finish. Very memorable. Perhaps the first bottle had been decanted for some time? The second taste, from another bottle, was still oustanding but seemed young and a bit would up. I'm scoring this with an average, but if the first taste was representative of what is to come, this could be a very special wine... one for the ages. (1531 views)
Tasted by ilee on 9/24/2023 & rated 94 points: Hmm, the nose is intoxicatingly good, with cassis and lead pencil telling you almost exactly where this wine is from. On the palate, it is fulsome, round and robustly fruity, giving a distinct impression of blackberries crushed with cigar ash. The tannins are prominent, and will likely be so for another 15-20 years given the way this wine is built. If you have many bottles put away, may I suggest plenty of fresh air and exercise, and perhaps a bit less alcohol in the weekdays, so you can be around in 2050 to see how this wine is going! (2301 views)
Tasted by luHar1423 on 9/10/2023 & rated 94 points: Still very young, but 2010 vintage is opening up nicely after having some deep breaths (~30 minutes). Fruity notes are fantastic, tannins and acidity nicely integrated and ready to blossom.
Advise to be patient and wait another 7-10 years to have a 96-98 beatuy imho - but for those who cannot wait, go for it and enjoy- cheers! (2249 views)
Tasted by vinhonotte on 7/25/2023 & rated 94 points: Burg/Bordeaux Dinner with BYO Gang (The Kongsee): Deep ruby, with some visible browning and fading on edges. Dried floral aromas, as well as red cherry, dill, tarragon, thyme, and pepper, as well as rosy florals. Somewhat lean and silky, with tannins present but not completely imposing, and flavours of red and black cherry, blackberry, thyme, mint, cut grass, and black pepper. Quite lengthy at the back. Interesting how such a warm vintage of Bordeaux actually produced such a soft, silky wine, when I had expected it might have been otherwise too tight. Great wine! (1772 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 7/12/2023: Like my last encounter with these, the 2010 Pichon Comtesse is still showing a lot of oaky espresso/carob notes, slightly nutty and toasty. The fruit is surly. We got to this about 3 hours after the cork had been pulled, which I expect was precisely the wrong time. (4097 views)
Tasted by RockinCabs on 7/12/2023 & rated 96 points: Nose: Opulent nose of berries, cassis, camphor, graphite and toasted coconut. Very showy and dark nose that actually does not say "Paulliac" per se.

Palate: Opens dense, deep and dark to the core. There is a lot here in the form of currants, blackberry, cassis, blueberry and graphite. So much depth, and just a bit of the sweet oak and graphite that marks many great PLL vintages.

Finish: Just singing in the finish with a resonant 60-second + delivery. Gorgeous closing notes of florals, graphite and crushed berries.

A very surprising co-WOTN with the 2010 Pontet Canet. I had really steered away from PLL in the 05-12 era, but will need to take a closer look based on this tasting. (3165 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 7/12/2023 & rated 94 points: Tasting with Florent Genty from Pichon Lalande in Enoteca Ginza. Decanted 3 hour before serving. Open-knitted with round red and dark fruit, nutmeg. Good complexity even at its youth. Wonderful length and depth. Could this be the best Pichon Lalande after 96? (3035 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 7/8/2023 & rated 95 points: Bert's pension party part 2; Bordeaux (@ BV): In the bouquet tobacco, sweet spices and smoke, luxurious oak and cedar. Same on the palate, juicy dark berries, round tannin and beautifully fresh acidity. A great length, smooth and very exclusive. Already such a great pleasure, but without any doubt a great future ahead! (3014 views)
Tasted by rmcnees on 5/26/2023 & rated 94 points: Classic Pichon Lalande tasting profile, dark garnet colored, medium full bodied, firm, tight and a bit closed surpressing that complex concentrated yet elegant and polished black fruit with notes of black tea cassis, graphite and tobacco leaf with hints of truffle and anise on a firm lingering structured tannin finish.

Tasted by mchern02 on 4/8/2023 & rated 93 points: 2 hours of air followed by 1 hour decant; at restaurant w crappy glasses and faint scent of soap so reserve judgment

Dark black core, minerals, and stones, some plush red fruit. Bright and broad, more oomph than elegance. Nice finish and better in a different setting (2952 views)
Tasted by GuanYu on 3/21/2023 & rated 96 points: Ripe cassis, violet, olive, cedar and menthol. Sweet, robust and intense. Long finish. Too young to drink now, need years of further cellaring to show its deep potential. (3037 views)
Tasted by ubercuvee on 3/19/2023: Very subtle on the nose and palate but honestly doesn’t really stand out in any way to justify a “super second” billing (2843 views)
Tasted by Iceman611 on 3/19/2023 & rated 93 points: Wonderfully balanced and fresh after a cool 13 years in the bottle. (2974 views)
Tasted by LB88 on 3/12/2023 & rated 94 points: This was superb eucalyptus and peppermint nuanced and layered. So concentrated at this stage and such a big powerful wine. Will certainly be one of Pichon’s greats with even more cellar time but can be enjoyed right now. (2622 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

Vins du Médoc (Conseil des Vins du Médoc) - Read More about the Medoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
