Community Tasting Notes (average 93.3 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 74 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Donjcorleone on 4/1/2024 & rated 94 points: This really needed an hour double decant to soften and reveal its deep aromas of black cherry, worn leather, dried herbs and sandalwood that gave way to a slightly tart, red fruited, tobacco drenched, mineral flavors that lingered. (213 views)
Tasted by Hermosabritdad on 12/16/2023 & rated 94 points: In a word sensational. A nice that is in the prefect place. Black fruit - cherry - and tobacco and meat. Lovely balance and many layers. Wanted to just breathe it in!! Is so clean too. And still fresh in the palette. Was not sure about how highly rated this was - and pricy - but now that Inhabe held on to it it is finally shop g its quality. A lovely Brunello. Key is to eat at least the 17 year we have with this one! . (460 views)
Tasted by canan on 8/3/2023 & rated 94 points: Lots of elegant cherry fruit with a great intensity. Some oak but everything is in a wonderful balance! Great wine that has aged very nicely! Loved it! (603 views)
Tasted by SchlaepDog on 2/12/2022 & rated 96 points: Still a nice purple color, not much browning at all, if any after a short decant. Nose is a bit subdued, but there is a nice bouquet of red fruit, underbrush, forest pine, and faint saddle leather.

In the mouth, it is quite decadent with a velvety texture showing layers of red fruit, spice, tobacco, and sandalwood. Red fruit like cherry and pomegranate intensifies on the long finish where the tannin has mostly resolved.

Overall, fantastic Brunello, a top five best ever for me and shows how great Sangiovese can be will proper aging. This wind is ready now, but could certainly hold for 5 or more years based on this bottle. Not sure there is an upside for waiting though. Cheers. (2350 views)
Tasted by UBD on 12/4/2021 & rated 92 points: Had really high expectations for this one. Sadly, was a bit disappointed. Enjoyed it much more when it was younger. Still, “suffered” through the entire bottle. :-) (2257 views)
Tasted by MLwine on 10/14/2021 & rated 94 points: Quite good. Well-balanced combination of earth, tannins, alcohol, and fruit, with a hint of sweetness. Maybe some cinnamon and cloves even. (2421 views)
Tasted by yeti575rider on 11/24/2020 & rated 91 points: This grew on me as I drank it. Seems in mature stage with secondary characteristics emerging. Tobacco, balsamic, and Menthol notes on nose. Earthy, cherry on palate. Fruit seemed to strengthen with time which I think it needed. Interesting for me to try at this point but wondering if I prefer this at earlier stage. (2944 views)
Tasted by Ward Huang on 7/16/2020 & rated 97 points: 18 hours bottle decanting.Blend of two parts near Bindi-Santi and Poggio di Sotto.

Nose of new oak, red berry and earth. Big structure.

Second round from decanter, charming floral nose of magnolia with red fruits. The palate refected the structure from the north. I must say that word from ZACKMAYO's note again—heavenly. (2758 views)
Tasted by ConnIntChicago on 5/27/2020: Huge nose and palate. Sour cherry and soy sauce with some Brett making this more attractive to some but not for me. Long bitter cherry finish. Big style and needs more acid but nice wine with food (2038 views)
Tasted by Sourdough on 3/30/2020 & rated 96 points: Bright, lively nose. Dark, dark color. Smooth, full mouth feel dominated by black cherries, leather, minerals, and more. Really nice. Long finish. Drinking well but lots if life left. (1975 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 3/28/2020 & rated 94 points: Nose: This nose is what brunello is all about as it shows off all of the greatest hits of the grape with a savory base along with red cherries, violets, licorice, tobacco, strawberries, earth, roasted hers, and iodine notes.

Taste: Medium bodied with tart, medium+ acidity with silky medium+ tannins. The feel is pure silk and refinement with red cherries, violets, licorice, strawberries, roasted herbs, and tobacco notes. There is an immense amount of depth while also providing a lengthy finish.

Overall: This is drop dead gorgeous. It had seen about 3 hours of air and it was in full bloom. This can still age for a while longer but it is drinking in a delightful place right now. (1999 views)
Tasted by bplant13 on 12/26/2019 & rated 94 points: One of the most intoxicating noses I’ve ever experienced from a BdM. Black cherry and raspberry, spices, licorice with a hint of earth as it opened up over the course of the evening. Still has quite a good backbone with solid tannin, but paired so well homemade spaghetti and meatballs. I picked this up for about half it’s average value, but I’m still not comveniced it’s a great QPR. Can’t wait to see how my next bottle evolves in another few years. (1885 views)
Tasted by Enfantterrible on 12/21/2019 & rated 94 points: I can’t say much more than Nostrabacchus about this wine. It merits serious attention. Watch out for the 14.5%. I’ll try to keep my remaining bottles till 2023-4 (1590 views)
Tasted by zackmayo on 12/17/2019 & rated 97 points: Heavenly. Omg. (1582 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 1/25/2019 & rated 95 points: Super perfumed, with notes of black cherries, blackberries, new leather, also some smoke, crushed flowers and spicy notes, as well as some mint. It‘s full-bodied, dense and pretty powerful, with excellent medium-high but polished tannin. Good freshness with medium+ acidity. Excellent length. A superb Brunello that is very complete. (2811 views)
Tasted by mnoljo on 1/19/2019 & rated 92 points: Needs a short decant. It improved over the course of the evening. Nice balance, tart cherries with a nice mineral edge. (2141 views)
Tasted by zackmayo on 1/12/2019 & rated 92 points: Hold another year (1935 views)
Tasted by mnoljo on 7/21/2018 & rated 88 points: Could of been an off bottle or exposed to heat in shipping? Thin raisiny short finish (2784 views)
Tasted by Willi Vinotti on 5/21/2018 & rated 95 points: This has been again stunning. An outstanding balance between acidity and freshness as well as secondary notes of well tamed wood, leather and menthol, this wine is a mouthwatering effort. And an ideal food companion! This is in the same direction as salicutti, not following the path of overripe brunello, but effectively more in the Pauillac way, balanced, cool and enticingly subtle. And in a perfect spot to drink. Even though it could easily hold another 20years... chapeau! (2772 views)
Tasted by acyso on 4/18/2018 & rated 90 points: The Rotating Dinners, II.4: 2006 Brunello (Chicago, IL): Supposedly a bit of a modernist producer, I still found this very much to my liking, in contrast to the Casanova di Neri. The nose here shows more fruit and less earth, with some very clear plum and cherry notes, but this is fairly dark in complexion. The palate seems to have a light bit of leafy herbaceousness, but there's a beautiful roundness here. Perhaps a little bit of woodiness on the back end, but nothing too out of place. (3242 views)
Tasted by Empirate on 4/13/2018 & rated 93 points: Enticing fruit and floral nose. Medium + body. Early tertiary complexity. Well integrated.

Double decanted then overnight with cork, decanted 2hours.

Probably doesn’t need all that prep and really ready to go but with lots of good drinking time ahead. (2271 views)
Tasted by Lord of the Bottles on 3/4/2018 & rated 92 points: Last bottle. Once it spent some time in the glass it revealed very dark cherry fruit and some faint licorice. Not outrageously special and solid. 91-92 (2162 views)
Tasted by EMTAME on 1/2/2018 & rated 91 points: Very good, but missing that extra something to make it truly memorable. (2155 views)
Tasted by Lord of the Bottles on 12/31/2017 & rated 91 points: Drank at NYE dinner. Would agree with other notes that this is a “solid” (yet unspectacular) wine in a “feminine” (light) style. (2026 views)
Tasted by Lord of the Bottles on 12/20/2017 & rated 93 points: Drank at the Bull and Last in Highgate. High toned fruit and high acidity. Settled down in the decanter. Matched the hare pappardelle ragu well just seems on the young side. Agree with some other CT users this is not your typical Brunello and is very modern and comes across more (dare I say it) more New World generic good Sangiovese. Still a good drink. Will wait another year to open my next bottle. 92-93 with upside development. (2169 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
