Tasted by canan on 8/26/2023 & rated 93 points: KYD #2.4: Lovely and fresh cherry/plum fruit with an elegant touch. It has retained its freshness and has a balanced structure. Lovely intensity!
Beautiful wine! (299 views)
Tasted by Wine Canuck on 7/1/2023 & rated 90 points: An Epic Summer Wine Weekend - Year 2; 6/30/2023-7/2/2023 (Muskoka, Ontario, Canada): [Tasted Single Blind] This pours light ruby in the glass. The nose is of stewed prune, iron, violet, vague touches of soy sauce, and muddy earth. The palate shows a fairly roasted profile with baked plums on entry. Tannin and acid are both medium minus. The finish closes on prune, tar and fennel. Nobody particularly liked this wine. We continued to follow it over 24 hours, but it never really came around. Hard to know if this was a poor showing or if this wine is just not a style our group cares for as the bottle condition was good, the fill high, and there were no obvious flaws. (731 views)
Tasted by french16 on 6/5/2021: Fantastic.
After drinking an amazing 1996 not too long ago, this 1985 did not disapoint either.
Very elegant, lots of garrigue notes with red fruits and touch of licorice. Earthy, tobacco.
Lots of things going on. Not a big wine, especially for CDP. Again, a Burgundian style. (675 views)
Tasted by MikeATL on 1/9/2019 & rated 94 points: Leathery, minty, raspberry fruited, seamless and not showing its age, it was pretty magical. (1371 views)
Tasted by canan on 9/20/2014 & rated 93 points: Chateauneuf Du Pape 1990 Horisontal (@Terkel): Some blackberry and the fruit still has some depth to it.
The backbone is however a bit frail and the flavors are a bit hollow with a dominating alcohol presence.
It does however collect itself a bit in the glass and it is overall still a wonderful and impressive wine (4234 views)
Tasted by sjwshiraz on 11/30/2013: Beautiful sweet red and black fruits. A bit brambly but not at all horsey. Only 13.5 % as well so went down a treat (4305 views)
Tasted by canan on 11/20/2010 & rated 96 points: Julefrokost 2010 (Casa Smidt): Lovely sweet black currant nose that is also very complex and the impressions just keep coming: Coffee, sweet tobacco, dried herbs, black tea.
The palate is equally enticing and also have a lot of complex flavors. Black currant and raspberry fruit mixed with leather and green leaves. A huge tannin and acidity structure that is very impressive for such an old wine! Very complex spices and just a crazy wine!! (5812 views)
Tasted by reichken on 12/13/2007 & rated 92 points: Drunk at St John with lunch (Partridge) Bottle was opened and decanted an hour before drinking. Dark purple color, looked very young, on the nose there was leather notes, a little barnyard and smoke with a little sweet spice. very thick in the mouth...had some creamy black fruits, bacon fat, and smoke...very well kept bottle, filled the mouth , long finish, very good example of old pegau...my wine of lunch (6157 views)
Tasted by KPB on 11/4/2006 & rated 93 points: [From Bob Parker's cellar]. Deep black/ruby, brick rim. Nose of red currents, rose petals, soft spices, fresh hay, warm brioche. Remarkably balanced in the mouth, with sweet fruit still hanging in there although attenuated, tannins becoming noticable, framed nicely by moderate aciidity. A lovely wine, no longer at its prime but still drinking incredibly well. (5992 views)
Tasted by cellarid on 2/8/2006 & rated 96 points: Truly amazing. The best 1985 I've had. Very rich and thick, but never heavy. Great provencal nose and pure dense fruit. A truly Great bottle. (4395 views)
Tasted by Wilfried on 9/27/2004 & rated 93 points: Pégaü vertical tasting (Graz, Austria): Brilliant medium ruby, medium tears. Decent spearmint, bit cool, fine cool white pepper fruit, bit of lovage (this is old). Plump body, sweet dark fruit, rum punch, some acidity, fierce tannins. Long finish, fruity velvety tannins. Rum punch note is a bit disturbing, else top wine.

Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 17 for taste + 8 for overall = total score of 93. (6034 views)
Tasted by babnik on 3/11/2004 & rated 94 points: The opaque, dark crimson wine quickly filled the air with spicy plum and earth notes. Eventually leather and grilled meat joined the melody. The flavors were intense and well-integrated: Plump, dark plums, black pepper, tar, tobacco, and wood smoke smoothly brought the wine to a long and lush finish. I really liked this wine -- my first experience with a CdP of any age. It won’t be my last. (3839 views)
Tasted by Ben Andersen on 1/5/2003: The '85 Pegau is an undeniably terrific Chateauneuf. It has a reduced core of red/black fruit; developed, but far less than I would have expected (this did come from a cool cellar). It needed some coaxing and air time before it started to open up. A classic. I hope more recent vintages have similar thrills in store after extended cellaring... (3138 views)

Domaine du Pégau is a beloved icon of traditionalism in Châteauneuf du Pape, crafting wines that dually epitomize the Châteauneuf style of the Southern Rhône while being unmistakably Pégau. Long owned by the Féraud family, the estate is run by the charming Laurence, a Parker Wine Advocate Wine Personality of the Year who was exceptionally well-schooled by her father Paul. Despite receiving six 100-point scores in less than 10 years, Domaine du Pégau is a down to earth specimen of Southern France hospitality.

Pégau produces three high-end Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées: the traditional Cuvée Reservée, the special Cuvée Laurence, and the incredible Cuvée da Capo (made from the best grapes in only the best years). These wines are aged in large old oak foudres for at least 18 months in the case of the Reservée, and much longer for Laurence and Capo.

Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate summarizes the house style as follows: “This superb estate fashions an old style, massive, unbelievably rich, rustic Châteauneuf du Pape. If you want to taste what the old style Châteauneuf du Pape of the forties, fifties, and early sixties tasted like, buy a bottle of Domaine du Pégau. They are rich, rustic, sometimes massive Châteauneuf du Papes made with no concession to modern-day tastes.” Furthermore, he continues “I have long been a huge fan of this estate, and have put my money where my mouth is, having purchased all of Pégau’s vintages since 1979.” Heady praise indeed from the world’s leading wine critic.

Domaine du Pégau’s wine have developed a cult-like following among savvy consumers, who adore their expressive style, unique personality and still-affordable prices for the quality and experience they deliver.

“There is a secret in the knowledge transmitted over generations.” — Laurence Féraud

Domaine du Pegau is run by Laurence Feraud and her father Paul.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
