Tasted by JMellet on 1/1/2024 & rated 85 points: Well past its prime (410 views)
Tasted by henrygjeffreys on 9/10/2023: Drunk over dinner hence short note but this was magnificent. Almost Musar levels of spicy hedonism and only 12.5% ABV. Probably at its peak but certainly not declining. (732 views)
Tasted by Jake Barnes on 6/20/2023 flawed bottle: Last of six auction bottles. Fill into the neck, cork only soaked on the end. Plenty of fruit, but it was a raisiny mess (same as bottle five). Cooked, I guess. Too bad. 12.8% ABV (flawed) (924 views)
Tasted by Jake Barnes on 12/31/2022 & rated 93 points: Fourth of six auction bottles with one previous owner and base neck fills. Cork soaked half an inch in one spot. Best bottle yet. Nose evenly divided between elegant undergrowth and tobacco leaf notes and aged black cherry with the same on the well concentrated, silky palate. Little to no unresolved tannins in evidence. Perfect acidity. A real joy to ring in the new year with. 12.8% ABV (great; distinctly above average; distinguished/****/17.5/93) (1340 views)
Tasted by CarpeDiem! on 12/28/2022 & rated 91 points: Last bottle of a case that never disappointed. Well aged, fully developed, now in its late drinking window. Charming, sweet aromas, leather, caramel, cigar box, plum, pencil. Drink now. (1356 views)
Tasted by Jake Barnes on 9/22/2022 & rated 90 points: Third from a lot of six 750ml bottles purchased at auction. Base neck fill. Cork soaked only about 5mm up. A little porty upon opening, but decanting for sediment added enough air to take care of this, and away we went.

Age-appropriate bricking. Wine in excellent condition. Easily the best bottle of the three I’ve had thus far. No sign of fading, with good concentration of aged red over black fruit, leather, a little woodiness, and some sous bois. Very nice and very correct aged Bordeaux. 12.8% ABV (very good; above average/***/15.5/90) (1374 views)
Tasted by Jake Barnes on 8/12/2022 & rated 88 points: Second of six purchased at auction with base neck fills. Cork soaked one-third the way up. Minimal bricking. PnP. Undergrowth and aged black cherry on the nose and palate. A little metallic at first. Tannins completely resolved. Good acidity remaining to provide structure.

With twenty minutes of air it gained cohesion but also became slightly porty. Then after being open for an hour, the maderized notes disappeared. It showed undergrowth, black plums, and red fruit on the nose and palate. Remarkable for a cru bourgeois with more than a quarter century under its cork. 12.8% ABV (good; average; simple/**/15/88). (1202 views)
Tasted by Jake Barnes on 7/12/2022 & rated 87 points: First of six purchased at auction with base neck fills. Sound cork soaked about half an inch up in one spot. Very dark in appearance. Overly mature and metallic upon opening.

Decanted a half hour, and then the wine found its legs. The overpowering undergrowth and metallic odor/taste disappeared, and it began showing plenty of aging/dried black cherry along with undergrowth on the nose and palate. It was bright and lean in an old school way (not a bad thing as far as I’m concerned), but there was a dryness on the palate. I suspect this was a from the acidity rather than the tannins, which I sensed were fully resolved. First glass served at cellar temperature; second at room temperature. It was better at room temperature.

All in all, a charming if not particularly powerful or elegant old bottle. I was very happy with it. 12.8% ABV (good; average; simple/**/15/87) (1320 views)
Tasted by Doctor Vyd on 6/6/2022 & rated 89 points: Deep color fruity nose tight smooth finish (1015 views)
Tasted by DJ Rooster on 1/4/2022 & rated 91 points: Still in a very good place. Burgundian, elegant, very little tannin left. Bright acidity buy not unbalanced. (1349 views)
Tasted by msauer on 12/5/2021 & rated 88 points: Gut, gereift. Satte Brombeere. Hat seinen Zenit überschritten. Viel Depot (1302 views)
Tasted by msauer on 5/25/2021 & rated 91 points: jetzt ! gereift, auf dem Höhepunkt . Karamell in der Nase, hellrot
Satte Frucht, noch Säure. mürbe Pflaumen, etwas Milchschoko (1738 views)
Tasted by CarpeDiem! on 4/3/2021 & rated 91 points: Well aged, fully developed, having further improved over last two years, but is in its late drinking window now. Charming, sweet aromas, leather, caramel, cigarbox, plum, pencil. Drink now. (1813 views)
Tasted by msauer on 3/8/2021 & rated 91 points: fein gereift, sehr harmonisch.
Reichlich helle Beeren, ein Hauch helle Schokolade
Mehr als ein CB, Tendenz St. Julien/elegant
12,8% (1858 views)
Tasted by Decanting Queen on 12/5/2020: My last bottle of this. Probably at peak or heading for the other side. Still drinking nicely and similar to prior notes. Don’t be fooled by the thinness on opening, it needs lots of time in the decanter to put on weight. Decant at lunch to drink with dinner. (3112 views)
Tasted by ldh44 on 12/2/2020 & rated 89 points: Bouchon en parfait état. Belle couleur rubis. Nez délicat, expressif. Tanins fondus , belle vivacité pour son âge. Très belle surprise. (1708 views)
Tasted by msauer on 11/18/2020 & rated 88 points: hat bessere Zeiten hinter sich.

Tasted by Decanting Queen on 8/15/2020: Similar to my previous note of June 2019. Still drinking really nicely, needs that 4 hour decant. 91 (2682 views)
Tasted by Wardyn on 4/24/2020 & rated 92 points: Aromatics of red cassis, smoke, dried herbs on the nose. Started off with a green herbaceous palate. Soon it evolves into notes of red currant fruits of medium bodied flavors. Keen acidity and very well integrated and harmonious flavors, balance with fine tannins and a lengthy finish. Drinking very well at peak. Delicious with an Argentina ribeye steak. (1757 views)
Tasted by Margaux Bro on 4/8/2020 & rated 93 points: Fantastic QPR - very textbook vintage Bordeaux. In a nice spot, drink up (1783 views)
Tasted by curtr on 3/9/2020 & rated 91 points: Needs a 2-4 hr decant. At a good stage of development. Enjoy now-2025. (1735 views)
(1266 views)
Tasted by Ara Kafafian on 1/4/2020 & rated 92 points: Blind, nose sends me to Bordeaux immediately with that perfume unparalleled anywhere else in the world. Brick rime, complex nose of barn yard, leather, cigar, cassis, humus, tomato vine, green pepper, cherries ending on a medium length finish, must be from the 1995 or 96 vintage. Preferable to drink over the following 5 years. (1846 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.
