Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.2 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 141 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by depechemoroder on 1/4/2024 & rated 93 points: In a stunning place - pure bright stone and citrus fruit that has a golden sheen to it with hints of pine, spice, and saffron. Deep and profound, but with surprising energy and lift on the finish. These definitely haven't given up and are marvellous with lighter game birds or pork stuffed with dried fruit. (135 views)
Tasted by Otaku Oenophile on 12/30/2021 & rated 94 points: Impressive

When I got home this was already decanted for 5 hours. Despite that it wasn't flabby. Crisp honey crisp apples, cream, lemon. (1044 views)
Tasted by timjr on 5/20/2021 & rated 93 points: This aged really well. Great mix of minerality, sea air, nectarine and peach fruit, lemon, and slightly buttery oak. Wish I had more. (1183 views)
Tasted by hackey37 on 5/3/2017 & rated 89 points: Clear, deep gold color. Aromas are brown sugar, butterscotch, apple, and sweet spice. Tastes are granny smith apple, brown sugar, caramel, and herbal notes. Long and sour finish. (3440 views)
Tasted by Seth Rosenberg on 8/5/2016 & rated 78 points: Nose is big with butterscotch, wood, vanilla and some herbs. The palate is similar but the wood and butterscotch combine with a resin or chemical/matchstick aspect that is just nasty. Finish is just the bitter chemical flavor. Nose - 4/6, Palate - 3/6, Finish - 2/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 0/2 = 9/20. (5284 views)
Tasted by adarus on 6/28/2015 & rated 93 points: Buttered popcorn, caramel, hint of stone fruit. (5721 views)
Tasted by Goldstone on 5/10/2015 & rated 92 points: Sunday Dinner on the Beach (Yin Yang Coastal, Ting Kau Village, Tsuen Wan, Kowloon, Hong Kong): Light yellow gold colour - no sign of age. Nose of matured oak, lemon and clam shells with seaweed-covered rocks on the shore. Palate is is rich, opulent, oaky, rounded and harmonious, with lots of roasted lemons and enough acidity to keep it very fresh. Powerful and muscular but very lean-muscled. Big reverberance on the end. Always a delight and a crowd-pleaser. Totally blew out a Gaja Gaia & Rey Chardonnay 2009 that costs over 4 times the price. (5609 views)
Tasted by Goldstone on 4/4/2015 & rated 91 points: Life has been kind to this wine since I last drank it and really enjoyed it 3 years ago. Lovely fresh and vibrant straw gold colour. Nose is deep, sweet slightly sweaty straw and lots of variations on sun-dried lemons. Palate is quite tannic but nicely structured to showcase the burnt lemon skin, taut oyster shell and lightly caramel mid-palate. Back end is super roasted charcoal grill lemon skins and a ton of lemon juicy fresh acidity. (3803 views)
Tasted by askoje on 10/19/2014 & rated 92 points: Rich aromatic nose with lots of crackers and minerals. Pear tart with yellow fruit and hints of white flowers. Full bodied, very rich flavours. Overall great wine with beautiful finish. (2959 views)
Tasted by rcrisa on 4/19/2014 & rated 92 points: The oak's showing nicely. Vivid wine. Beautiful. (1307 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 2/2/2014 & rated 91 points: Medium gold color. PNP, drank 1+ glasses over an hour. This was pretty similar to the bottle I had a year ago. Nose shows lemon, citrus, oak, and some minerality. The palate still has some good acidity to go with the lemon and pear flavors, moderate oak, and a nice finish. This pulls everything together pretty well. Last bottle and I think a good time to finish. 90+ to 91pts. (2780 views)
Tasted by WineCellarTV on 5/16/2013 & rated 92 points: Ripe fruits, honey, nice creamy texture, minerality and solid acidity. Beautiful wine! (3856 views)
Tasted by rjsmall on 3/31/2013: Mid yellow colour. Rich nose - toast, oak, vanilla and cinnamon. Similar flavour with rich brioche toastiness and ripe fruit. Long finish with good acid balance. Very good and enjoyable. Drank over two hours. Still has a lot of life left in it. (3670 views)
Tasted by Mattshank on 3/31/2013 & rated 90 points: Nose: Deep aromas of Creme Brulee and ripe lemons. Palate: Unfortunately this bottle seems flat as the acid levels are nowhere near the same as last bottle tasted on 8/15/11. The flavor profile is similar with the lemon and apple, but in the absence of ample acidity this effort is dissapointing in a comparative sense (last score was 92 pts.). Nonetheless a solid Chard but I hope my last bottle will yield better results. (3664 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 1/6/2013 & rated 91 points: Medium gold color. Pnp, drank 2 glasses over an hour. Nose is showing more oak than previous bottles, very toasted, lemon, nutty, butterbrickle, citrus with just a bit of tropical fruit. The palate is full, round, energetic, oak, lemon, citrus, burnt rubber, medium plus finish. The finish was a bit sharp on day two. This was better day one than day two. (3763 views)
Tasted by Goldstone on 12/26/2012 & rated 89 points: Boxing Day Long Lunch at Top Deck, Aberdeen Marina, Hong Kong (Top Deck, Jumbo Floating Restaurant, Aberdeen Marina, Hong Kong): Deepening silver-gold colour. Rich, buttery nose with ripe, succulent green and orange melon. Palate is very deep and rich, oak-framed citrus freshness. Good long finish but I find this lies a bit heavy and foursquare on the tongue. On the day I preferred the higher-toned freshness of the Ch. Montelena Chardonnay 2009.....but most people preferred the Ridge for its more hedonistic richness. (3442 views)
Tasted by Fur in the glass on 6/19/2012: creamy, citrus/grapefruit, alcohol seemed much more present in this bottle (2665 views)
Tasted by unionst on 5/7/2012 & rated 91 points: Floral nose - white flowers and a little honeysuckle with a hint of orange and lime rinds. Nice balance of white peach, pineapple, and candied orange on the palate. Even a little sugared fennel. Bright acid and a long finish. I think in the drinking window right now. (2917 views)
Tasted by UTPK on 4/23/2012: Lovely nose of fully mature chardonnay and some butter, but also some minerality poking through. Full bodied but balanced mouthfeel. Just a bit tiring in the end, but very good with food. (2835 views)
Tasted by pismo45 on 1/29/2012 & rated 91 points: Nice nose but with a hint of oxidation. Toasty, lemony, nicely balanced medium bodied wine. (3452 views)
Tasted by jwolf99 on 1/15/2012 flawed bottle: No rating as this bottle seemed to be fairly oxidized; a shame for such a good wine (3507 views)
Tasted by wineshaman on 11/27/2011 & rated 91 points: Had with fresh Eastern shore oysters, Green apple, pear, some toast and hints of lemon butter. Blalanced and understated elegance, that is not overdone like so many of it's couterparts. Drink over the next few years! (4033 views)
Tasted by team-blackburn on 10/10/2011 & rated 90 points: Starting to fade. (4117 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 9/26/2011 & rated 92 points: High End Cabernets $100 plus: Drinking well again with chalk, oak, orange peel, lemon and carmel. Complex wine and really at its peak in my opinion. (4782 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 9/25/2011 & rated 93 points: Hi-End Cabs/Bordeaux Blends Offline, Blind ($100+) (Minneapolis): Medium gold color. Lovely nose of toasted oak, apples, citrus-lemon, with minerals. The palate is delightfully rich, round, and full with consistent fruit, mineral and great balance. Restrained oak and a long energetic finish make this just outstanding. (4798 views)

Garagiste (6/26/2009)
(RIDGE Chardonnay Estate Santa Cruz Mts) UPDATE: 4th of July Hours The warehouse will be closed next Friday and Saturday, July 3rd and 4th. Also, next Thursday, July 2nd, the warehouse will close early because of the Great Producers Tasting tasting at 5:30. To accommodate set up for the tasting, pick up hours are 11-2 (instead of 11-6). Please plan accordingly if you wish to pick up for the holiday weekend next week! Thank you, The Garagiste Warehouse ************************* Ridge Dear Friends, Paul Draper believes 2007 is among the 2-3 finest vintages of his career - enough said. Today, we present a selection of the new releases from Ridge and they are very promising indeed. This California stalwart needs little introduction and, while two California offers in one week is a bit much for us, Ridge is an exception. The 2007 vintage in Northern California has already caused a 2005 Bordeaux/Burgundy-like frenzy among Napa/Sonoma enthusiasts and we're just at the beginning. All of the entrants below command considerable attention and you can pretty much throw darts to find top-tier quality. If you are looking for a powerful California Chardonnay that actually tastes of its place and varietal, the 2007 Estate is quite underpriced versus comparable bottles from the Golden State - it will surprise a great number of you with its regal style. Ditto for the Geyserville. All are set to arrive in a few days and will be available for local pick up after the holiday weekend: 2007 Ridge Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay Estate 2007 Ridge Geyserville (Sonoma) 2007 was such a good vintage in Sonoma that this is destined to unwind (after its bottle shock) into a very long-lived version of this California classic. There are old-time (i.e., pre-cult wine) vintners that feel the 2007 vintage (in general) may be as good as 1968 in Sonoma - now that's high praise. 2007 Ridge East Bench Zinfandel (Dry Creek) Ditto for this wine - another Sonoma product that delivers a mouthful of fruit and substance for far less of an entrance fee than most. If you are a fan of the big and brambly (while still reigned in), this is for you. ...we also have a small parcel of this wine: 2005 Ridge Lytton West Syrah (Someone told me this wine received 95pts from somewhere but I can't find it - maybe one of you can let everyone know on the Forum board? What I do know is that this belies a California style, instead looking to Ampuis for its inspiration.) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA CA8710 CA8720 CA8730 CA8749

Chardonnay

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Santa Cruz Mountains

Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association | Wikipedia

Once referred to by wine writers as the Chaine d'Or -- or "golden chain" -- the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA sits above Silicon Valley, running along the craggy range next to the Pacific on some of the prettiest parts of Northern California. The area supports more than 75 wineries, despite being limited by geography and high land prices.

In 1981 the Santa Cruz Mountains Viticultural Appellation became federally recognized, one of the first American viticultural areas to be defined by geophysical and climatic factors. The appellation encompasses the Santa Cruz Mountain range, from Half Moon Bay in the north, to Mount Madonna in the south. The east and west boundaries are defined by elevation, extending down to 800 feet in the east and 400 feet in the west.
