| Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 26 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Lipsman on 8/2/2022 & rated 92 points: Dark garnet color. Still young. Dark cherries, mouthwatering acidity, earthy, with some anise on the finish. Seems a bit hot for a low alcohol wine. Plenty of fruit. Tannins present. Drinks like a young Cabernet from the 80s. Mellows after five hours in a decanter. Still needs time in the cellar. Try again in 2027-2030. (967 views) | | Tasted by mlawren1 on 2/13/2022 & rated 93 points: Dark and earthy with stone frui, currants and berries. Drinking perfect. (963 views) | | Tasted by Tubulus on 1/31/2020 & rated 91 points: Tasted alongside the Torre Merlot of the same year (thanks coravin!). More eucalyptus/American oak/ridge signature but also a bit more lift and brightness. Clearly from the same family. (1545 views) | | Tasted by bjschmitt on 12/5/2019: Tasted at Jason Kallsen's Ridge vertical evening. The Klein was really nice, about even with the Monte Bello. (1379 views) | | Tasted by tplskylrk on 10/19/2019 & rated 94 points: P&P - Beautiful color, dark Gemstone feel. Sweet Jesus, that telltale Ridge nose. I could drink that nose all day. Eucalyptus, miny, sharp fruit, green note. Hard to describe everything going on w the nose. Just amazing. The acid and tannins as usual for a youthful Ridge, there, striking, yummy & a great food wine.
Day III - Been vacuumed & fridged. Seems darker looking? Nose is a muted compared to that orgasmic P&P Day I. Now the weight is here in the palate, its richer, fuller on the palate, the green notes of stems etc is gone, its more olives now. Balanced, oh so balanced. Bright fruit on the finish, youthful. Lingering. Damn, wish I had more, but thankful I have way way too much MB. (1461 views) | | Tasted by guitar guy on 7/13/2019 & rated 92 points: We had a wine tasting over the weekend with some friends. This wine came in second, to a William Hill, Napa Valley. Unfortunately, I left my tasting notes at our friends home, and they are no longer available. I can say that this wine was still too young, and had not yet found it's sweet spot. It was still pretty tannic, and the fruit had not fully bloomed. I would wait another three years before revisiting this big, sturdy Cabernet. (1316 views) | | Tasted by overthetop on 5/29/2018 & rated 91 points: A little more interesting than the 09 Monte Bello. Some stem flavor when first opened. (1609 views) | | Tasted by Colima74 on 2/18/2018 & rated 95 points: Everything in balance. Full mouth feel. No perceptible oak. Muted red fruit. Outstanding (1531 views) | | Tasted by kosinski on 6/3/2016: Aroma: lovely nose of violets and roses with notes of eucalyptus, tobacco, vanilla and blackberry jam. Palate: big, complex and structured with primary flavors of blackberry, graphite, cedar, smoke, eucalyptus and leather. Grippy tannins and moderate acidity. Drinkable now but will reward extended cellaring. (2003 views) | | Tasted by SkeBum on 5/31/2015 & rated 88 points: Okay Cab, noticed a LOT of oak on the palate, which is a turn off for me. Good wine overall though. (2691 views) | | Tasted by Mike Dildine on 2/14/2015 & rated 94 points: 13.6% abv. Dark ruby. Very expressive aromatics. Savory and energetic, well delineated. Bordeaux like, but with nice ripe fruit overtones. Should be a good ager. (2730 views) | | Tasted by Mike Dildine on 10/3/2014 & rated 92 points: Great focus and blance. Excellent and should continue to improve. (2567 views) | | Tasted by Mike Dildine on 7/19/2014 & rated 93 points: This wine continues to grow on me. Great typicity and depth in a traditional, restrained style. Should continue to improve. (2568 views) | | Tasted by Mike Dildine on 7/8/2014 & rated 91 points: Tasty and I expect continued development. (2203 views) | | Tasted by tplskylrk on 3/16/2014: NIce wine. Solid Ridge wine, well made, subtle, Santa Cruz fruit for sure. (2033 views) | | Tasted by pschultz on 12/18/2013 & rated 92 points: Beautiful supple cab. Drank after decanting for three hours. Will cellar well, and I will look for a few more bottles. (2336 views) | | Tasted by tplskylrk on 11/21/2013: This was OK. I prefer the Santa Cruz version. Kinda pricey for the single vineyard version comparatively. Ready to drink w some decant time. (2193 views) | | Tasted by sw92130 on 5/27/2013 & rated 90 points: very nice. drank over 2 nights. (2949 views) | | Tasted by kosinski on 3/4/2012: Deep inky violet. Intense nose of blackberry and eucalyptus. Rich but very tannic and backward with black raspberry flavors over bright acidity and warm oak spice. Quite good but needs a lot of time. (3851 views) | | Tasted by Foodievines on 3/3/2012 & rated 88 points: Plum, baking spice, raspberry on the nose. Followed by a soft entry and very big and lingering taste. | Ridge Producer website | Wikipedia
Ridge Vineyards is a California winery specializing in premium Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay wines. Ridge produces wine at two winery locations in northern California. The original winery facilities are located at an elevation of 2,300 feet (700 m) on Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA near Cupertino, California. The other Ridge winery facilities are at Lytton Springs in the Dry Creek Valley AVA of Sonoma County.Cabernet SauvignonCabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.
Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet SauvignonUSAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Santa Cruz Mountains Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association | Wikipedia
Once referred to by wine writers as the Chaine d'Or -- or "golden chain" -- the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA sits above Silicon Valley, running along the craggy range next to the Pacific on some of the prettiest parts of Northern California. The area supports more than 75 wineries, despite being limited by geography and high land prices.
In 1981 the Santa Cruz Mountains Viticultural Appellation became federally recognized, one of the first American viticultural areas to be defined by geophysical and climatic factors. The appellation encompasses the Santa Cruz Mountain range, from Half Moon Bay in the north, to Mount Madonna in the south. The east and west boundaries are defined by elevation, extending down to 800 feet in the east and 400 feet in the west. |
