| Community Tasting Notes (average 93.4 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 10 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by ChrisWagner on 8/26/2017 flawed bottle: Sadly very maderiaized and just no good. Worth the $15 flier from the ghetto liquor store in Peoria IL just for the chance. (1166 views) | | Tasted by RayOB on 2/7/2017 & rated 90 points: Drank at 67 Rich deep and viscous. Incredible length. (1296 views) | | Tasted by rh53w on 3/7/2014 & rated 95 points: What a nose! Honey, flowers, lychee, violet and mango just jump into your nose. Beautiful golden color. Lovely and languorous on the palate, lots of botyris, tastes like all of the above with the particular impression of crushed flowers soaked in honey. 30 to 45 second finish. Maybe compared to other sweet wines it doesn't have the extra dimension that an Yquem has on the best days, but then again it also costs less than a quarter of a good Yquem. A great quality/price and great on an absolute level as well. (1978 views) | | Tasted by rocknroller on 3/14/2013 & rated 93 points: Wine Dinner with Jean-Frederic Hugel (Meritage, St. Paul): Deep golden-amber color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30+ minutes. This was the Selection de Grains R bottling at 103 gm RS. Aromatic nose with lychee, bright florals, honeysuckle, apricot, some pear, quince, spice, orange marmalade. The palate is delightful with good viscosity, deep fruit layers of apricot and orange preserves, tangy, lifted. Clean and energetic with impeccable balance, and a very long botrytis filled finish. 93+pts. (2607 views) | | Tasted by airbull76 on 4/18/2010 & rated 95 points: An amazing bouquet of honey, caramel, honeysuckle, lilacs and lychee, all of which is reflected on the extremely complex palate, plus a little peach and sweet pear. It is medium-bodied with medium levels of acidity, but there is plenty there to keep it going for a long while yet. A splendid wine with a luscious mouthfeel which balances power with elegance and refinement, and is one that that I will revisit in a few years. Tasted September 12, 2009 at an offline.
Light yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of orange foam and apricots. Flavors of apricots and peaches. Light to medium acidity, light to medium body. Drink or hold. (2976 views) | | Tasted by cct on 5/20/2007 & rated 97 points: A beautiful golden color. The nose of this wine haunts me. Hugely floral with lychee, honey and an impeccable balance. On the palate an weightless yet incredibly complex wine. Great texture. Lilacs, more honey, and lychee. I love this wine. 97 pts. (2451 views) | | Tasted by peternelson on 4/18/2003 & rated 94 points: winery: Nice pure gold color; huge legs, honey nose, roses, and a hint of mineral. Very rich viscosity, but lite mthfeel; strong flavor. (1328 views) |

Citation from a comment by John H. Trombley on Hugel wines labeled "Grossi Laüi":
These wines come from lieu-dit(s) located within [a] Grand Cru vineyard(s), but were not labeled with their respective vineyard names (a requirement for Alsace Grand Cru AOC.) As a matter of fact, this seems to have been deliberately avoided, purportedly for reasons given below.
IT MUST BE EMPHASIZED THAT NOT EVERY WINE MADE IN A GRAND CRU VINEYARD IS ENTITLED TO THE AOC ALSACE GRAND CRU BECAUSE THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER REQUIREMENTS, NOT LEAST YIELD AND permitted VARIETIES.
NOTE THAT what is claimed by Robert Parker as an Alsatian-dialect trivalent for the Burgundian 'Grand Cru' or the German 'Grosses Gwächs', that is, Grossi Laüi, seems to have no official standing in the wine law that I could find as of this date. The Hugels are knows to be among a handful of powerful estates who, for various reasons, have strongly resisted participation in the Alsace Grand Cru system, and its efforts at promoting a separate system probably should be seen as self-promotional, in the view of some. In 2017, those resisters were beginning to work with the system, and it is expected that this will influence the labeling identity of subsequent vintages. I expect this may cause some confusion as to wine identities.
In Cellar Tracker, it is strongly suggested that wines not be listed as Grand Cru unless the maker has chosen to make that label claim, and is prepared to defend it to the Appellation authorities. However, exceptions may arise, and will undoubtedly be structured into the CT infomatics.Gewürztraminer Varietal Character (Appellation America)France Vins de France (Office National Interprofessionnel des Vins ) | Pages Vins, Directory of French Winegrowers | French Wine (Wikipedia)
