Tasted by Burgnick on 3/21/2023 flawed bottle: TCA (1035 views)
Tasted by Boone's Farm on 10/8/2022 & rated 89 points: Austere. Mineral driven and no sweetness. After an hour was better (1029 views)
Tasted by RayOB on 3/13/2021 & rated 93 points: Drank in London
Fully mature and deep rich palate. Recommend with food. (2327 views)
Tasted by RayOB on 9/12/2020 flawed bottle: Sadly gone (2582 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 10/12/2018 & rated 93 points: The best 88 Champagnes from 1988 Part 1/3; 10/12/2018-10/13/2018 (Les Crayeres Reims): Blind, Jamesse Synergie Glas, Magnum
It started slowly with few concentration but with time nice decent nuttieness and suprising elegance for a Bollinger R.D. Nicely balanced. maybe a hint too young from this bottle size. 92-93 (4687 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 10/7/2018 & rated 92 points: Second bottle in as many nights with identical showings: good not great, a touch more tired than you’d hope for although the warm, open-knit, slightly oxidative fruit is straightforwardly delicious. Not as sharp as a bottle from the same lot enjoyed in August would was a solid 93. Good, no complaints. (3570 views)
Tasted by Bernard Shen on 5/6/2017 & rated 100 points: Simply put, the best Champagne I've had. Power, elegance, sexiness. Disgorged 20th May 2003. It even had bubbles! (5277 views)
Tasted by jjjj7676 on 2/18/2017 & rated 99 points: This Bollinger RD from bottle was quite simply spectacular in every way. I agree that the preservation was amazing. There was a slight release as I tentatively popped the cork. But I did have bubbles! A steady stream of very fine bubbles surged through my glasses. I tasted power and finesse on every sip and taste. The initial mouth feel, mid palate and finish were all powerful and sublime. I realised (helped by my research) that this quite simply is the best vintage year. Second only to some in the 1970's. This was like stepping back in time to when things were done properly. A fabulous bottle and again my provenance was unquestionable in everyway. Thank goodness I have more .... (4618 views)
Tasted by FransS on 11/28/2016 & rated 90 points: Dégorgement 1999; this champagne started too old, but with some air the wine grew; tones of old wine, but also a lot of complexity, nutty, some caramel, after 30 minutes the backbone became more recognizable; remains only of bubbles and of course a very golden colour. (4617 views)
Tasted by CManthei on 12/2/2014 & rated 94 points: Tasting from magnum presented at a Bollinger tasting. The preservation is amazing -- effervescence abounds and it is crisp and acidic. Beautiful golden colors. This vintage is starting to get that beautiful sherry-like austerity of quality aged Champagne. Love it (6358 views)
Tasted by hajoha on 10/19/2014 & rated 89 points: Litt moden nesen, noe uren, men lurer litt frukt i bakgrunnen der.
Noe oksidativ i munnen, men også frukt. Stor friskhet og bra konsentrasjon.
Lang finish. (6280 views)
Tasted by Ramberg on 2/22/2014 & rated 93 points: No formal notes taken.
Nutts and apples on the nose, with typical Pinot infused red apples and some hints of oxidation showing.
On the palate this is quite rich and long, with minerals and mainly apples showing, together with some coffee and fudge on the finish.
Very nice, but not great. (6115 views)
Tasted by bill00 on 1/15/2014 & rated 94 points: Disgorged September 2000. This was great. Lots of yeast, brioche, baked apple and minerals. Broad and rich with very slight oxidative notes that was all kept nicely in balance by fresh acidity. Very nice spot of maturity with developed aromatics and a palate that is still lively. (5437 views)
Tasted by Shorepower on 9/29/2013: 1988 Bollinger R.D (magnum) som var degorderad 28/3-2013.
Tasted by Vintomas on 7/15/2013 & rated 94 points: Appearance: Deep golden yellow.
Nose: Winter apple, red apples, oranges, some nuts, slightly flowery.
Palate: Powerful, yellow and red winter apples, also green apples, high acidity, good spice, long aftertaste.
Summary: Fully developed, but good tension, 94 p.
Has definitely reached its peak, but I would definitely not say that it has started to go downhill. The acidity was probably as could be expected by a 1988, and it was at least not less vigourous than the last bottle of R.D. 1990 I tasted. (3636 views)
Tasted by avp on 6/27/2013: Disgorged 4. avril 2001
Ripe golden apple to peach on the nose with almonds, bisquits, cream and hazelnuts accompanying the fruit.
Dry, fullbodied and focused palate with finegrained acidity and smooth moussé. Ripe but youthful fruit profile withouth the rounding effect of dosage. Strawberry cream, almonds, aniseed and vanilla. Long.
Drinking quite nicely, but still took its time to open up. Very good. (3634 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 6/2/2012 & rated 91 points: Saturday Wine Lunch Group: Burgs & Bordeaux (Lucques Restaurant, Los Angeles, California): Light golden yellow color with few, medium-sized bubbles; mature, oxidized, oxidized apple, malty, baked apple nose; tangy, baked lemon, mineral, tart apple palate; medium-plus finish (not in as good shape as the last couple I've had) (2703 views)
Tasted by Bisty on 2/10/2012 & rated 94 points: Disgorged: 5 March 2002.
Wonderful mature and very concentrated PN aromas together with an impressing acidity. The chalkiness in the midst of the fruit is very clear and shows off the high class! Nice strings of bubbles still. Great complexity. Worth the money! (4823 views)
Tasted by kenv on 5/20/2011 & rated 97 points: Champs, Burgs, Barolos, Malbecs @ Leo's (Leo & Connies's in Eastchester, NY): Magnum. Disgorged in 2003. Gorgeous lemon custard nose with hints of all kinds of subtle spices. Stunningly complex in the mouth. Great length. Yeasty, full-bodied style. Truly great wine. Just when I might think Champagne might not be that interesting, I get hit with a bottle like this. Amazing! (6110 views)
(5147 views)
Tasted by sdr on 7/30/2010 & rated 93 points: Bollinger at its best. Light gold, modest mousse, small bubbles. Powerful, flavorful, masculine; walnuts and fig. Excellent length. Deep in it's secondary phase but very energetic. (5081 views)
Tasted by plitton on 11/27/2009 flawed bottle: A spoiled magnum, sabered with much fanfare and everything! So sad. (5319 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 3/9/2009: A magnum of 1988 Bollinger R.D (Disgorged 26th April, 2001) was in great nick. It opened with plenty of wheat biscuit and baker’s yeast and bloomed in the glass to show plenty of citrus, a little meat and refreshing minerality. It still possesses the piercing spine of the vintage and went well with Gruyere and Lacschsschinken tarts but was perfection alongside Scallops and citrus beurre blanc. (3527 views)

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France.
Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and A˙) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
