Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.8 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 24 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by cct on 3/19/2020 & rated 92 points: Pop and poured, drunk over 3 hours.

A mature and quite lactic nose with butterscotch, cashew, cream, pear, bitter almonds, and sherry notes that become less evident with air time. At first the nose came across a little tired, but it freshened up some with air time. Mid to full bodied, forward, and beautifully proportioned. Deep, yet with good lift and a sense of chalkiness and power without weight. The palate is fresher than the nose with excellent cut, a sense of stony/chalkiness, and breadth without any heaviness. I suspect this was better a couple years ago. Excellent with popcorn with white truffle salt. Drink up. (1968 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 11/6/2016 & rated 84 points: Very developed... should it be so? (3418 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 9/1/2016 flawed bottle: Premox (3669 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 4/28/2014 & rated 92 points: Casual Burg Dinner with Friends (The Bristol - Chicago IL): Lush, ripe apple and pear aromas with some sweet baking spice. Similar on palate with some peach as well and good concentration. Forward and slightly advanced, probably at its peak now. Perhaps the best I recall from this wine. Leflaive 2004s have often been good or great, but also often inconsistent. (5617 views)
Tasted by Harley1199 on 3/20/2013: Femenine Sense of Wines (Cuenllas - Madrid): A green pepper splash!
Yeastie, yeastie. Reduced to my taste. Woody indeed.
Oxidation? Well don't think it is here but seems very young.
With time sunflowers seeds and a little sweetness of honey, pears
A serious complexity is showed
Lovely.

¡Bofetada de pimientos verdes!
A levadura-levadura. Para mi reducida. Amaderada sin duda.
¿Oxidación? No lo creo aquí pero parece muy joven.
Con tiempo pipas y un poco de dulzura con miel, peras.
Muestra una complejidad seria.
Muy rica. (6012 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 12/2/2012 & rated 89 points: Popped and poured. not nearly as good as another bottle from earlier this year. Mature and ripe apple aromas with some peach, some new oak spice. More precise and lean on palate, much more enjoyable than the nose, with ripe apple along with lots of lemon and lemon zest. Moderate intensity and concentration. (5220 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 11/14/2012 & rated 93 points: A lot of floral and herbal elements at the onset…it did get better with time in the glass, but thought it could use more lift on the backend…solid 93 pts for me. (3645 views)
Tasted by don_quichotte on 7/15/2012 & rated 92 points: Really very lovely, poised, precise and quintessential leflaive. White flowers, citrus, some honey. Plenty opf high notes. May well be at peak hedonistic enjoyment right now, though I suspect that it will become intellectually more intriguing with time. At this age, no point in letting pox influence the way you think about when to open those... it's either shot or it's not... (3796 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 5/23/2012 & rated 92 points: Some Burgundy with Dinner (GT Fish & Oyster - Chicago IL): Very floral start with good spice, still showing some new oak. Peach aromas to start with a hint of pear as well. A bit leaner on palate, also showing pear as well as lemon and lime. Good power and intensity. Much better and more balanced than I remember from when tasted several times shortly after release. (2852 views)
Tasted by Barry Rothof on 4/19/2012 & rated 93 points: White Burgundy tasting @ (Rotterdam, Netherlands): Again a blind wine, which showed a medium intense yellow core, with a clearing rim and a golden tinge. The medium-plus intense nose shows clear signs of evolution, with notes of sweet & ripe -even honeyed- fruits, but also savoury dried herbs and further hearty, umami-like undercurrents. The wine is medium-plus bodied and shows medium-plus acidity, which doesn’t quite get adequate opposition from medium intense flavours of dried green herbs, burnt nuts and faint caramel; even more so since -other than some distant white peach- they are somewhat devoid of fruit. It must however be noted that the oak is well integrated, as witnessed by an absence of phenolics. With above caveat in mind, the finish still manages 20-25 seconds worth of precarious balance, as it is here that the ends are definitely starting to fray. Quite frankly, I gauged this wine as past its best and showing signs of the dreaded p’ox, so I wasn’t too surprised when it was revealed as Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru “Folatières” 2004 – Domaine Leflaive. My verdict was 87 points and to drink up before it deteriorates further, but -surprise, surprise- this wine did a complete and utter 180 on our unsuspecting asses. After three hours and 30 minutes in the fridge, it turned into a nervously-styled, concentrated, precise and complex Puligny, which was probably closer to 93 points than my earlier score. Reduction can be quite the bitch!.............................. TN Mike de Lange. (2753 views)
Tasted by darvid on 9/30/2011: 2004 Vintage Burgundy Tasting and Oxidation Check (Part 1) (BLT Fish, New York City): Brilliant, classical. Fuller and riper than other high-acid vintages of Leflaive Puligny (the ‘96s come to mind) but with great balance and poise. Very fine now and seems on track to be hauntingly good in just a couple of years. (2856 views)
Tasted by Captain Haddock on 2/17/2011 & rated 92 points: Burgundy blowout with John Arnold (Chez Bruce, London): Tight nose, laser-like focus; citrus fruit notes, especially of mandarin essence, developed over an hour as it sat in the glass, nice minerality, very good length, a delicious wine with upside potential. (2950 views)
Tasted by don_quichotte on 11/9/2010 & rated 92 points: Not POX issue here. My wife qualified the nose as "pop-corn" and this captures it fairly well. Very leflaive in style. Some toast and butter. Has improved since last time i tried it. Beautiful palate but might not be obviously Puligny in style (might have said meursault?): pretty broad and intense with white flowers and nice fruit. Has improved a lot since the last bottle i opened. A clear success though might not be worth the entry ticket? (2517 views)
Tasted by Milos on 7/28/2010 & rated 92 points: Very enjoyable. Smoky note over lemon and stone nose. The palate is balanced with decent intensity, flavours of lemon rind and almond; very good finish maybe even long finish. Perfect with scallops. (2513 views)
Tasted by don_quichotte on 11/26/2009 & rated 89 points: Needs much more time. Decanted for an hour but still felt some sulfur and oak. Long and intense so should get there eventually. Still very primary color so premox not a real issue. If you do drink it now, make sure to decant for 1-2h and serve in proper glasses. (2796 views)
Tasted by psmith on 10/15/2009: Domaine Leflaive Dinner (Chicago, IL): Some sulfur notes - is this the norm for '04 Leflaive? Yellow citrus. Lighter palate. Somewhat raw structure. OK. (3389 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 10/15/2009: Domaine Leflaive Tasting and Dinner (Knightsbridge - Northbrook IL): Also a bit reductive, but not as much so as the 2004 Clavaillon. Somewhat restrained for Leflaive, mostly showing lemon with flowers and modest spice. Moderate length. (1971 views)
Tasted by jimbomatic on 9/5/2009 & rated 91 points: Very good to say the least. Spot on right now. Stones, bright fruit, flowers and a lot of lovely texture. Might improve but it is very lovely at present. (2770 views)
Tasted by City Wine Journal on 8/11/2009 & rated 93 points: Bought a month ago, travelled across country with me and served 5 days later. Very nice showing. Acacia flowers, citrus, a little stone fruit on the nose, with a nicely round, large mouth-filling and delicious follow, showing mineral, light toast and a long finish. Well done, holding form for several hours. 2004 White Burgundies continue to show well. My first Folatieres, will buy another. (2859 views)
Tasted by Alex H on 7/20/2008 & rated 86 points: The Finest Burgundy Domains: The Classical 2004 (Caveau): Gold. Very typical baygon, almonds, cashew nose. Also reminds me of Indian shop scents...not sure why....maybe indian flowers? Nuts galore with fresh acidity. Excellent mouthfeel that is juicy, rich, opulent and buttery. Medium to long finish. (3463 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 7/19/2008 & rated 88 points: Vinum 2004 Burgundy Tasting (Caveau, Singapore): I came to this wine with high expectations - a 1er Cru from Leflaive no less - but was rather let down. Pale gold colour. One swirl, one sniff and I got hit with loads and loads of oak, roasted almonds and peanut brittle with a hint of coconut. Some floral top-notes appeared after quite a bit of time, but otherwise, the nose just held that nutty, buttery, caramel profile. As would be expected from a Puligny, the palate was certainly fat, rich and opulent in a buttery, creamy way. Lots of acid as well, but this appeared quite tart rather than being a good counter-balance to the weight of the wine. In fairness, the tartness lessened wth some time, but the palate always seemed rather all-over-the-place and quite unintegrated. The one thing that I really liked about the wine was its finish, which was extremely long and classy, at once juicy and fat, and yet resolving in an extremely seamless and satisfying fashion with the flavours lingering and lingering with just a little hint of spice as the wine wound down. This wine is not showing well at the moment. I have no doubt it will improve with time, although I am not sure it will ever improve enough to be a great wine - certainly not one I would open at the moment though. (3845 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
