Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.1 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 168 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Josch48 on 1/1/2024 & rated 93 points: Impenetrable opaque black ink color, with coronal edge of violet to crimson to orange. If not for the intoxicating wide central core of densely brilliant black fruit aroma, the wine’s etiology would have been construed to be that of a young Pauillac, presenting with an accompanying heady bouquet of pencil box, sweet tight grained oak, cocoa, and the subtle sense of a tightly packed dirt floor on a warm afternoon.
The medium light viscosity mouthfeel is redolent with sweet, well extracted and concentrated silky smooth blue and black fruit, supported by a well balanced acidity and the lingering fond memory of an appropriately complementary tannic presence, all of which (sans food initially) are gently transported throughout the stages of the palate, and enjoyed, as a setting sun, in the extended finish (eight minutes and counting).
The cast of varietals include 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petite Verdot.
This elegant beauty is perfectly balanced, and should remain so, with proper cellaring, for at least the next five to eight years, depending, of course, on respective tasting proclivities.
I compare the beauty of this wine with the 1985 and 1986 Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon wines I was so fortunate to drink, and, per my retentive sentimentality, the scant few remaining in my cellar. (282 views)
Tasted by raydiakor on 4/2/2022: Red and black fruits - black currant, raisin, blackberry, cherry
Black pepper or exotic spices
Toasty oak (714 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 1/3/2022 & rated 91 points: From magnum. This is pretty consistent with my note from 2014. Tasting very young. Probably a combo of the magnum and cold cellar. (872 views)
Tasted by ameyer430 on 9/3/2021: In a nice place right now. Hurry up and drink. (975 views)
Tasted by peeno on 8/6/2019 & rated 90 points: Slight cork leakage but still good. Lost a little fruit and tanins have smooth out. Almost bordeaux like now and not a high power California cab. (1705 views)
Tasted by peeno on 3/19/2019 & rated 88 points: Not as good as previous similar bottle. Not as full body as color. Dark fruits. Moderate tannins. (1649 views)
Tasted by peeno on 1/12/2019 & rated 91 points: Super mellow. Drink now. Anise, dark fruits, a little spice and a little tobacco tannin dust. (1498 views)
Tasted by joet626 on 12/21/2018 & rated 90 points: very good. Got better after first sip. Liked it (1296 views)
Tasted by joseph120 on 5/9/2018: PnP and didn't smell much. Was medium weight with moderate black and blue fruit mid palate, with moderate lasting round tannin finish. I also tasted some acid initially which I didn't care for, but about 15 min later with some air to the wine in the bottle, it was gone, and tasting real smooth. It lost its vigor after a couple of hours though. Would not allow to age any longer, and drink now. Wish I had more - was very reasonably priced. (1877 views)
Tasted by td1836 on 11/20/2017 & rated 92 points: This time was the best this wine has shown for me. Black and blue fruits, with dusty undertones. Smooth, round tannins, medium length finish. Definitely say this is drinking at peak, but should continue like this for a while. (1760 views)
Tasted by Cabernet4me2 on 10/20/2017 & rated 89 points: No formal notes taken.

Had decent fruit and with a good entry, just short mid and finish.

For the price paid, a good weekday bottle of wine, just nothing special or notable that stood out.

No signs of age, but don't think aging is of any benefit. Drank from a Magnum. (2078 views)
Tasted by shank on 8/28/2017 & rated 91 points: At its peak, drink up! (1985 views)
Tasted by shank on 8/26/2017 & rated 91 points: At its peak. Nice finish with some dark fruit and leather undertones. (2078 views)
Tasted by vinomex on 8/16/2017 & rated 91 points: No detailed notes, within its window. Very enjoyable. (1522 views)
Tasted by funk74 on 3/26/2017 & rated 91 points: Smooth, fruity, plummy start. Slightly spicy at the end. Thick and full bodied. At or slightly beyond its prime. If you have some drink it now. Great Napa cab around the $35 price point (1764 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 3/8/2017 & rated 90 points: Basically consistent with notes of 5/16/2014 - this is a much better than average CS from the shelves of the local grocery store.

Takes a while for the chocolate to tone down and flavors of blackberry, olive and bay leaf to appear. The finish is long and smooth, the tannins present but fine grained. The oak is a little dominant, but this is a very strong for $30 Napa Cabernet. (1632 views)
Tasted by GRoz on 1/28/2017 & rated 91 points: Another great honig. Ripe round tannins, good structure, dark cherry fruit with a classic eucalyptus nose. Drink over the next 3 years. (1644 views)
Tasted by Ceo on 11/18/2016 & rated 93 points: Still holding up it is beautiful🍷🍷 (1814 views)
Tasted by vinomex on 11/17/2016 & rated 90 points: Solid Cali cab drink. It lost some of its oompff experienced in the last bottle. Smooth, fruity, medium body, easy drink keeps begging for more. Probably at its peak. (1712 views)
Tasted by whitmanlholt on 10/1/2016 & rated 91 points: Popped and poured. This is a deep reddish-purple-colored wine with some slight lightening at the rim; there is not much sediment anywhere in the bottle. On the nose, I get mint, cassis, stone, and some ash. The mouth is smooth, fruity, and medium weight, leaving a chewy and sweet finish. Overall, this is a very good wine for the price -- it easily punches at 2 or 3x its price. This is ready now and should coast for 2-3 years. 91 points. (1347 views)
Tasted by joet626 on 6/2/2016 & rated 92 points: Very good. Delicious fruit with lots of toasty vanilla flavor. (1679 views)
Tasted by vinomex on 4/6/2016 & rated 91 points: Has evolved significantly, much bigger and bold than I remember. Opened for business but a hint of alcohol/heat in the body prevailed. Nice drink, mom was delighted. Solid drink but not for the faint hearted. (1689 views)
Tasted by ctjared on 4/4/2016: Drinking (1487 views)
Tasted by td1836 on 4/1/2016 & rated 91 points: Red and black fruits, herbs, currant, smooth and integrated tannins, medium to long finish. Both savory and fruity. Next to the 2012, this was drinking better. (1449 views)
Tasted by sdoverko on 3/25/2016 & rated 91 points: One of my favorites (1305 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
