 Tasted by huse on 9/4/2013 & rated 89 points: A powerful Montsant wine made Sara Pérez (Mas Martinet/Priorat) and René Barbier junior (Clos Mogador/Priorat), the oenological dream couple of Catalonia. Varietal composition: 75 % Garnatxa (60-year-old vines), 10 % Syrah, 8 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 7 % Merlot. 60 percent of the wine spent nine months in French barriques, the rest was aged in tank. Decanted: two hours prior to tasting. Intense dark red color with some violet shades and a complex bouquet of blackberries, leather, cassis and a hint of oregano. The full-bodied palate shows concentrated berry and plum fruit, but the tannins are still quite dominant at present. Good length with a slight balsamic touch. Will likely improve over the next couple of years.

Een krachtige Montsant-wijn, gemaakt door Sara Pérez (Mas Martinet/Priorat) en René Barbier junior (Clos Mogador/Priorat), het oenologisch droomkoppel van Catalonië. Samenstelling: 75 % Garnatxa (60 jaar oude stokken), 10 % Syrah, 8 % Cabernet Sauvignon en 7 % Merlot. 60 procent van de wijn verbleef negen maanden in Franse barriques, de rest rijpte in tank. Gedecanteerd: twee uur vóór consumptie. Intense, donkerrode kleur met wat schakeringen van violet en een complex bouquet van bramen, leder, cassis en een vleugje oregano. Een volmondige wijn met geconcentreerd bessen- en pruimenfruit, maar de tannines zijn op dit moment nog vrij dominant. Degelijke afdronk met een lichte balsamische toets. Zal allicht toegankelijker worden met nog enkele jaren kelderrust. (3212 views)
 Tasted by Erik12903 on 5/10/2013 & rated 86 points: I ordered this at Oaxen slipen out of good recollection from 19glas the other month, and it still feels like very good fruit, but for some reason (maybe the pairing is less rich) it now feels more forward, rich and sweet, but still with structure. Like a well made zinfandel from someone who uses less oak than normal. Maybe it was served to warm? (1719 views)
 Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 2/14/2013 & rated 90 points: Garnatxa, Cabernet-Sauvignon and Merlot are an unusual trio and we very rarely find them planted on granite. The resulting wine takes a little getting used to and some time in the decanter too. The nose has aromas of olives, cherry stones, herbs, white almonds and granite but with aeration these are complemented by fresh blackcurrants and garrigue; on the palate the wine is quite tannic, well-extracted but foursquare and on the tough side; good length. I am not a big fan of the style but a well-made wine. (88) Much more attractive on the second day, has come together beautifully, a wonderfully wild character but with considerable charm. (90). Au nez, le fruit rouge domine (cerise). Je perçois aussi des notes de bois & une fraîcheur qui apporte un peu de droiture. Avec le temps, une touche animale se développe.
En bouche, la masse tannique est imporante mais pas désagérable. Le fruit est toujours très présent. L'ensemble est somme toute harmonieux & le vin montre un bel équilibre. C'est assez ample & robuste.
Produit très agréable. Un vin somme toute assez costaud mais digeste.

Red Rhone Blend

On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.


A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos and Amontillados. But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
