Tasted by tward on 3/30/2024 & rated 92 points: Excellent
Lesser vintage excellence here, drinking well right now. Little funk here and nearly mid-weight. Other's TNs tell the story well. This is really nice with food, too, in part due to the lean towards elegance vs. heft. but there's not doubt from the time you pull the cork that you've got a Grenache-driven CdP in hand.

Nice with a plate that include cast iron Zabuton and hanger steak!

Lovey stuff and nice QPR at an all-in delivered sub-$40 USD price about six years ago.

Tasted by wylee on 3/21/2024: Better after 1 hour breathing in the bottle. Very enjoyable (852 views)
Tasted by scorbett on 3/11/2024: No brett, very clean. Sort of presenting like an earthy Bourdeaux but perhaps with a more floral and also garrigue-infused bouquet.

Enjoyable, prim, but not particularly complex (even after hours of breathing). (927 views)
Tasted by Brain Capers on 2/28/2024: Wow, absolutely excellent bottle, no issues with cork or too much bret. And there was still a lot of life if you can wait. Very good indeed, Yum! (847 views)
Tasted by brianakrin on 2/23/2024 & rated 92 points: Good fruit core. balanced. Drinking well! (863 views)
Tasted by Sperls on 12/1/2023 & rated 93 points: Great showing from the 2011 “drinkers” vintage. Definitely a lighter wine in terms of weight and color (more translucent dark red than the often purple/black of bigger vintages) with great, high-toned cherry/black cherry fruit w a touch of spice, herbs, licorice and hint of sourness. I might have mistaken this for an aged Beaujolais cru if I hadn’t brought it. The acidity pulls it all together and it’s still pretty crunchy and chewy with a medium+ finish. Have a couple more bottles to see what happens… (1705 views)
Tasted by RMundell on 12/1/2023 & rated 94 points: Drinking really well out of a mag. Excellent wine with years to go. (1511 views)
Tasted by BilboBaggins on 10/14/2023 & rated 92 points: Smooth, dusty earth, a bit of dried fruit, herbs, Christmas spices, leather. Quite light in body for the category. Ready to drink. (1800 views)
Tasted by Joelene on 10/2/2023 & rated 93 points: Time has been good to this wine. It has gained body and weight, intensity and depth.
Still tannic some primary fruit and secondary qualities. This will keep improving. Solid wine. (1948 views)
Tasted by AMC Eagle on 9/16/2023 & rated 93 points: Pnp. Medium+ garnet-brcik red in colour with a slight clear edge. On the nose, black licorices, ripe plums, with some stewed black cherries, and beef blood along with some barnyard funk. On the palate, there are noticed some licorice and peppery plums with additional notes of black cherries, tobacco, and dark unsweetened chocolate; tannins are noticed but slowly melted away after a few minutes. Medium+ bodied with a medium finish. Last tasted August 2018. (1872 views)
Tasted by Cote d'Or on 9/10/2023: Tasted over 2 hrs
-med dark red purple minimal edge clearing
-aromatic plum kirsch fig licorice
-med/med+ acidity, med weight faded plum licorice earthy mild heat, med tannins
-on mature plateau might still improve if develops tertiary notes without the heat becoming more prominent (1639 views)
Tasted by TONOFBRIX on 8/28/2023 & rated 93 points: Brilliant as always. Perfect wine for rustic French food, try this with cassoulet and smile from ear to ear. I often find that vintages of Pegau that are ostensibly from lesser vintages make beautiful bistro wines.

Worth thrice as much as what I paid. (1642 views)
Tasted by RH_Palmer09 on 8/28/2023: A little effervescent We loved it! (1428 views)
Tasted by leolin726 on 6/29/2023 & rated 92 points: Still can age for 3 years. I reserved one glass in third day and it tastes sweet than first/second day. The cheery smell is still strong with good body. (2014 views)
Tasted by whitmanlholt on 6/11/2023 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured. There is some modest sediment and other signs of the wine breaking up toward the end of the bottle. On the nicely expressive nose, I get garrigue, herbs, and some kirsch. In the mouth, this is a mid-weight wine, showing sweet red and black cherries with a tad of aged stewed fruits. The finish brings some nice acid with just a touch of barnyard/horse. Overall, I thought this was a very good wine. It shows classic CdP/Pegau aspects without being overdone. It seems to be showing its age a bit (perhaps more than it should at just 12-years old?), but still is in solid shape. Drink now or hold through 2026. 92 points. (2128 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 3/12/2023: Just as wonderful as last time I opened a bottle. Classic Pegau marks of animal farm, beef blood, iron and dark cherry fruit. Drinking a point right now, no need to hold for much longer. (2538 views)
Tasted by Ajb on 2/26/2023 & rated 93 points: Exceptional. Cola and spice in a barn. Paired w crackling and bolognese w friends. (2104 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 1/8/2023: PNP from magnum - didn't take notes- very savory on nose/palate with good fruit (raspberry, black cherry). 92+ (2417 views)
Tasted by Brain Capers on 1/7/2023: Absolutely wonderful, everything in an aged Pegau, fruit, richness, a little funk. Yum. Yum. (2108 views)
Tasted by davergny on 12/5/2022 & rated 94 points: Another lovely bottle with character and finesse. (2117 views)
Tasted by Proletaren on 11/26/2022 & rated 84 points: Tired wine, with slightly oksidative fruit. Dry, losing fruit and some bouillon. Disappointing. (2066 views)
Tasted by MayValley on 11/25/2022 & rated 93 points: Great ruby colour with a tough of bricking.
Aromas of cherries, dried herbs, spices, slightly autumnal - fallen leaves, animal notes and some barnyard notes.
The palate is elegant, nice sweet red berry fruit, a nice backbone of acidity, just a touch of tertiary notes, good dry extract with soft tannins. I like the elegance of this vintage. It is almost light as a burgundy but with more sweetness. Approaching maturity. (1521 views)
Tasted by Doctor Vyd on 11/24/2022 & rated 90 points: Nice fruity nose smooth strong finish good color (1418 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 10/20/2022 & rated 91 points: Ruby red in color. 14% ABV. Textbook nose of red fruits, garrigue and roasted herbs. Medium body with perfect acidity. Somewhat lean and it appears the fruit is fading ever so slightly. Black cherry, kirsch, blood and charred meats on the palate. Nice length on the finish with drying tannins. Not a great vintage for Pegau or CdP on the whole but this wine is still compelling. Best over the next several years. (2038 views)

Domaine du Pégau is a beloved icon of traditionalism in Châteauneuf du Pape, crafting wines that dually epitomize the Châteauneuf style of the Southern Rhône while being unmistakably Pégau. Long owned by the Féraud family, the estate is run by the charming Laurence, a Parker Wine Advocate Wine Personality of the Year who was exceptionally well-schooled by her father Paul. Despite receiving six 100-point scores in less than 10 years, Domaine du Pégau is a down to earth specimen of Southern France hospitality.

Pégau produces three high-end Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées: the traditional Cuvée Reservée, the special Cuvée Laurence, and the incredible Cuvée da Capo (made from the best grapes in only the best years). These wines are aged in large old oak foudres for at least 18 months in the case of the Reservée, and much longer for Laurence and Capo.

Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate summarizes the house style as follows: “This superb estate fashions an old style, massive, unbelievably rich, rustic Châteauneuf du Pape. If you want to taste what the old style Châteauneuf du Pape of the forties, fifties, and early sixties tasted like, buy a bottle of Domaine du Pégau. They are rich, rustic, sometimes massive Châteauneuf du Papes made with no concession to modern-day tastes.” Furthermore, he continues “I have long been a huge fan of this estate, and have put my money where my mouth is, having purchased all of Pégau’s vintages since 1979.” Heady praise indeed from the world’s leading wine critic.

Domaine du Pégau’s wine have developed a cult-like following among savvy consumers, who adore their expressive style, unique personality and still-affordable prices for the quality and experience they deliver.

“There is a secret in the knowledge transmitted over generations.” — Laurence Féraud

Domaine du Pegau is run by Laurence Feraud and her father Paul.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
