Tasted by t.c.green on 3/31/2024 & rated 90 points: This has become softer with time and retained its rich Italian flavor. Elegant with a long finish. Perfect for any full bodied Italian meat dish.
Enjoyed with Holly and David (61 views)
Tasted by Vascular46 on 1/30/2023 & rated 90 points: Still retains dark ruby color but there is a loss of the black fruit on the nose and palate. Clearly past it's prime drinking interval but still pleasurable. I was holding these out for a vertical for our wine tasting group but I obviously held them too long. (534 views)
Tasted by Brad Fagan on 9/25/2022 & rated 91 points: Mature but still very drinkable. Drink now or soon. Opens up as soon as you open. No decanting needed. (613 views)
Tasted by Nicthebuilder on 11/9/2017 & rated 91 points: Beautiful example of an aged super tuscan.
Lovely nose of lavendar, sweet red fruits and fresh herbs.
Silky smooth tannins on the palate enhance the black fruit, with a great balance of savouriness coming from the meaty, briny flavours that come through when it hits the mouth and take front stage on the finish.
Nice wine but drink now, I wouldn't hold it for too much longer. (3269 views)
Tasted by PaulusLoZebra on 4/11/2016 & rated 92 points: Beautiful deep color with transparent edges, not showing much age; big, powerful nose of sweet, ripe black fruit, leather, hints of dried figs; big flavors, full-bodied but with tannin and acids both in recession; long; elegant, balanced. (4146 views)
Tasted by paul canet on 1/3/2016 & rated 92 points: Tout simplement delicieux (3939 views)
Tasted by tendring on 7/10/2014 & rated 89 points: Wine Education Service - Italy - Tuscany (Imperial College): Dense and still youthful.
Animal development on the nose with prunes and plums and lavender.
Fruity, balanced, soft tannins, international style, good length. (5665 views)
Tasted by Hazevedo on 2/16/2014 & rated 90 points: - Brick color. (5207 views)
Tasted by Wilsonhome on 1/28/2014 & rated 90 points: Very good. Color is ruby trending brownward. On the nose I get fruit overlaid with oiled leather, much more pleasant than it sounds. Not too tannic and a nice finish. Hope to find another few bottles. (3636 views)
Tasted by Ericsson on 12/23/2013 & rated 92 points: Bouteille et bouchon en parfaite condition. Bottom neck. (2791 views)
Tasted by hsacks on 4/19/2013 & rated 93 points: A touch richer, deeper and more complex than the 3/22/12 bottle. (3210 views)
Tasted by hsacks on 3/22/2012 & rated 92 points: Deep red color. Aromas of black fruits, leather, chocolate and spices. Ripe, beautifully structured and integrated fruit in the mouth with excellent depth and length. Very sauve and elegant. In sweet spot of maturity. (2988 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 2/18/2012 & rated 92 points: BLACK CHERRIES, BLACKBERRIES, AND CURRANTS IN THE NOSE AND FLAVOR. NICE COMPLEXITY AND A MEDIUM TO LONG FINISH. (844 views)
Tasted by chefconway on 3/21/2011 & rated 89 points: pretty solid...expected a bit more given the age on the bottle but was purchased at a discount. good fruit and leather notes. well balanced oak and tannin at this point. would rebuy for under $50 but over that there seems to be better value elsewhere (3343 views)
Tasted by jeffm_fla on 10/12/2009 & rated 91 points: Nice wine, good with food. Not as big as some Super Tuscans (2963 views)
Tasted by Jozefs on 5/20/2009 & rated 91 points: Leather, black fruit, exotic spices, black chocolate, good acidity, best on the second day. (3779 views)
Tasted by alamoave on 5/15/2009 & rated 91 points: Better than last bottle; opened approx 1 hour before pouring; little sediment; fruit blend of sangiovese and merlot and cab has absorbed most of the tannin and some of the oak; a bit of heat on the finish but thoroughly enjoyable; should be good for a few more years (3338 views)
Tasted by alamoave on 1/20/2009: Tannic. Very tannic. I think there's enough fruit to survive the evolutionary process, but this wine is not in its best place right now. Better two years ago. Hopefully, a phase. (3152 views)
Tasted by Deb293 on 11/26/2008 & rated 87 points: Not exactly worth a ten year wait...Pretty explosive nose of raspberry liqueur initially but follows with aromas of factory oil, anise and tar. The fruit is under there somewhere...On the palate this a little heavy on the mucilage glue with a bucketful of yet to be integrated tannins. Can't get excited about this. (3157 views)
Tasted by jeff nowak on 6/2/2008 & rated 90 points: soft tannin, but firmer than the 95. this had a nice core structure, yet still lacked distinction, and true complexity. medium body/ mouth weight. (3356 views)
Tasted by kstoddard on 6/2/2008 & rated 90 points: G7 (Pat): Blackberry, blackcurrant and earth. Nice freshness and acidity. Spicy finish however not as complex as the '95. However, more tannic and powerful. (3810 views)
Tasted by markellen.foodies@gmail.com on 2/3/2007 & rated 90 points: At Timo w Martin & Annette Cohen, Tamer(Giorgio Rivetti's friend) waited on us. This time double decanted before dinner, and let stand in open bottle for an hour while we drank the Piastraia. I can't get this one right. Last time I dec anted for 2 hours, and felt it lost something. Quite good, but reticent bouquet, and its finish was to my mind clearly inferior to the 97 Piastraia. Ellen preferred ot to the Piastraia(but her cold may have influenced her opinion). Will wait a few years before tryi ng again. (4087 views)
Tasted by markellen.foodies@gmail.com on 10/28/2006 & rated 93 points: At Quattro w Steve & Joyce Rapaport. Decanted for 2 hrs in am. Lost a little definition, but still wonderful. Next time will try just double decanting. Drank extremely well. Can't figure the blend. Seems more cabarnet than sangiovese. Hadn't had for 4 years. Still one of my favorites. Preceded the Arnaldo-Caprai Sagrantino 25 the anniversary 1997. (4252 views)
Tasted by Tad GW on 7/6/2005 & rated 86 points: This was a beast of a tannic monster when tasted first. Very closed nose but giving some oak. Young ruby color deep and purplish, With time the bouquet evolved and some violets could be scented among blackberry and oaky aromas. With time the tannic attack melted away to a predominant fruity taste with integrated and smooth tannins in the background. What rapid evolution! Good body with pleasing palate. Still the wine seemed somewhat limited-dimensional and simple by comparison to its competition. Yet some in the group found this their second favorite, and it came in third overall. 50+5+10+14+7=86 (4786 views)
Tasted by jeff nowak on 3/28/2004: this tuscan is not cheap, $76. i enjoyed the 97, so i was anxious to try this vintage. i found it to be drinking well. rolled off tannins with enough fruit to give up a stuctured, pleasing mid palate, despite only a medium body. more elegance than power. recommended.

Indicative blend: 25% Syrah, 30% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon

SuperTuscan Blend

SuperTuscan Blend refers to wines which feature a significant Sangiovese component combined with grapes not traditionally associated with Italy like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This separates it from "Sangiovese blend" which is used for wines which are predominantly Sangiovese and combined with traditional Italian varieties. There is often confusion as many wines most famous associated with the term "Super Tuscan" like Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia have no Sangiovese and are properly linked to 'Red Bordeaux Blend.'

In fact, Super Tuscan was a term coined to refer specifically to wines such as Sassicaia and Tignanello. These were wines that "fell out" of the official DOCG classification of Italian wines because they either contained grapes not permitted (international varietals such as cabernet sauvignon or merlot,) were aged differently (I.e. in barrique) or were 100% sangiovese - which was not permitted at the time for Chianti (E.g. Fontodi Flaccianello.) Forced to be classified as simply "Vina di Tavola" these wines nontheless quickly found favour in international markets and comanded prices above the highest quality DOCG Chianti Classico & Brunello di Montalcino wines at the time. The wine industry and press began to refer to these wines as SuperTuscans because of their popularity and quality, but also because of the prices they commanded. Subsequently, the Italian authorities, under the Goria Law 1992, redrew the classifications, and included the category IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) to classify the SuperTuscans.
