Community Tasting Notes (average 91.2 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 387 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Mleh on 4/17/2024 & rated 95 points: I opened this at midday and sipped a glass slowly every hour until dinner at 6.30. The evolution was pretty incredible. Started out with a stunning nose of cherries, cassis, tobacco and earth but the palate was all tannin and oak with only a hint of what was present on the nose. After the first hour it improved a lot, I started to get a little fruit and some leather and tobacco but the tannins really dominated still. By about hour four, it had really opened up and was much more balanced. At this point, the nose had somehow integrated all the aromas I first smelled in such a way as to create something really incredible. The palate too had started to reveal more soil, cherries, cassis, leather, tobacco and even some slight savory notes. These integrated further over the next two hours and by dinner it became really one of the better bordeux I’ve had. It feels mature, like it almost perfectly combines primary and tertiary flavors, there is a really nice amount of acidity and tannin and the finish is endless. Sadly this is my only bottle. I have some 2016s that I probably shouldn’t touch for 20 years.. (149 views)
Tasted by ME_DOC on 4/2/2024 & rated 94 points: Bought this bottle 10 years ago directly at the chateau after a drive thru the vineyards with a golf car.
2001 was one of the last years before the transformation of Pontet Canet to biodynamie and much higher prices. This bottle was a real treat. Amazing pauillac cassis and dark fruits, now perfectly integrated tannins and a nice earthiness with mushrooms, wet forestfloor and some tobacco after 23 years. Drink up, i think this is not to get any better from here...
(Some years ago i have seen a documentation on TV about Pontet Canet and in an interview monsieur Tesseron told the audience that 2001 was his preferred vintage to drink right now.) (535 views)
Tasted by grossie on 1/28/2024 & rated 93 points: Note is from a week later. From magnum.
This was a classy and classic bottle of bordeaux. Drank amazingly well- good fruit, tannins are softening, long finish.
Red WOTN was an 06 Opus one, but this was really close.
From the magnum I would say it's ready to go but still has years left, there's no rush. (1088 views)
Tasted by Doctor Vyd on 1/25/2024 & rated 91 points: Deep color fruity nose strong smooth finish (1052 views)
Tasted by Vinumming & Ahhing on 10/31/2023 & rated 94 points: Bordeaux 2000 & 2001 Horizontal (Piccolino, Exchange Square, London): Adore this. Some capsicum, a Grape Nut character and layers of dark fruits. With air there's a little pomegranate purée, some torn fresh coriander and some crumbled Biscoff biscuit. Palate very youthful but has a long future ahead of it. The beguiling nose steals the show for me. In a very, very tight field this is my wine of the night. (1761 views)
Tasted by oenanthe on 10/31/2023 & rated 93 points: Neil's 2000 & 2001 Bordeauxs (Piccolino, London): More evolved than the 2000, and clearly less explosive on the nose - a straightforward single blind pick. This also seemed ridiculously young in the grand scheme of things, another wine that I would likely have failed to even place in the right decade, astonishing. The cassis is there front and centre, but it's a fresher wine without quite the same roundness as the 2000, and of the two this is the one I would open now. Equally you could keep this for a long while still. Delicious. (1587 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 10/31/2023 & rated 93 points: Neil’s 2000/01 Bordeaux @ Piccolino: Similar mid to dense ruby. The smoke and spice dialled back a little. A touch lactic on the nose. A little less structure, more glycerin and acidity than fine tannin. A little more green freshness. ?2002 **** (1407 views)
Tasted by Papies on 9/29/2023 & rated 94 points: It’s been 3 years since we had this ( Papies 94) and frankly reminded us why we have so many of them. A wine we have been following for a good dozen years ( 93-95 range) and frankly the difference in ratings is more down to our mood than the wine which is simply magnificent and maybe the best ever made in the modern era of Pontet Canet. Sont so much in the perfection of things but more in the expression of place, purity of fruit and effortless side of it. This is not over trying like the post Michel Roland era wines but just sort of came to place party by randomness party by greatness and just delivers. This has another 20 years to go and a must try wine for the lovers of beautiful claret. 94 (1537 views)
Tasted by JVG on 9/24/2023: No formal notes, but this was fantastic. Elegant, still plenty of fruit, vanilla, violet, cedar. Medium bodied and delicious, dry, and clean classsy finish of minerals and menthol. (1207 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 8/10/2023 & rated 91 points: Absolutely delightful. Cigar box aromas with mostly fresh black fruits on nose and palate. Good weight and persistence, this is wonderfully vibrant. (1786 views)

Tasted by RolandFranz on 4/24/2023 & rated 93 points: Très beau Pauillac à maturité. Tasted by platpeeps on 3/14/2023 & rated 92 points: Rich, plump and full it was still leafy with firm tannins, so that initially it appeared closed and tight. Opening up in the glass it revealed fleshy plum fruit transforming to a plush silky finish. CHP 92 pts (1704 views)
Tasted by Mark van Delft on 3/8/2023 & rated 94 points: Superb Pauillac! Bell pepper, cherry, prune, tobacco leaf, cassis, cigar box, medium plus body, great long finish. Years of life ahead, close to peak. (1762 views)
Tasted by Birks cellar on 1/14/2023 & rated 92 points: Really good and mature. Still tannins. I can still survive some years but it is on the top right now (1839 views)
Tasted by paul canet on 12/16/2022 & rated 92 points: Textbook Bordeaux, always good in IMO, Coffee, Leather, animal touch, graphite, herbal, Nice lenght (853 views)
Tasted by MS86 on 10/10/2022 & rated 96 points: Clear, medium ruby. Youthful appearance.

Nose is bright, complex and juicy. Oak is dominant but beautifully integrated. full of red licorice, smoke, cigar box and leather.

Palate is lovely and balanced, ripe and fresh with fine tannins and robust acidity.

Flavours are toasty and smoky with a blend of ripe red berries.

Astounding length.

Drinking well now. Drink to 2030. (2155 views)
Tasted by SirJ on 3/4/2022 & rated 94 points: Pontet Canet was at first a bit knotty, high acid which made me wonder if the wine is too young. But after 2-3 hours things started to happen, black currants, cassis, and blackberries. But it is above all the minerality, the graphite that strikes me with astonishment and these wonderful dry tannins, perfect for the food. From what I understand, Pontet Canet has only developed into a "Super Second" in Bordeaux after this. Glad I have several vintages in the cellar (2012, 2014, 2015, 2018). (2731 views)
Tasted by djhammond on 2/25/2022 & rated 91 points: From memory with no formal notes, this is unusually quite youthful, but is drinking well. One of the last vintages before Pontet Canet went through its magical transformation, it is sometimes hard to reconcile the wine with some of its perfect deliveries later in the decade. In many ways 2001 belonged to the right bank, but this is a decent showing. (2546 views)
Tasted by Edouard84 on 11/21/2021 & rated 94 points: This bottle was really shining! (3011 views)
Tasted by Eudemis on 10/25/2021: 13% alcohol. Average cork in terms of length, but pretty dense and with no wine penetration. Decanted 75mn ahead. Deep colour with minimal thinning at the edge.
Magnificent nose mixing dark fruit, tobacco and spices to give a sensation of fullness. The mouth is just as good and it adds good grip and decent acidity; very good length with menthol in the finish. There is no doubting the influence of oak in the mix, but it is never in your face. Harmony is the key word here.
An archetypal Pauillac with nothing cooked or overdone. Perfect to drink now but should keep ageing gracefully for another fifteen years, I would guess. (2956 views)
Tasted by T.E.D. on 9/4/2021 & rated 91 points: My third bottle, last tasted in 2017. Still showing a Dark and youthful color. Nose shows prominent herbal, cool mint and vegetable notes with hints ash and lead. A taught front palate shows, touches of cherry herring, more herb, cigar box, some rosemary and sage. Tannins are still showing. The mid palate drops off quickly, with a limited finish at this stage. High quality and aromatic nose with a weaker palate. Still have a few bottles, will revisit in 2/3 years. (2736 views)
Tasted by Hawkeye_Addict on 6/8/2021 & rated 92 points: For 20 years old this is still incredibly youthful. Still quite a bit of tannins, but nicely integrated. Pencil shavings, cigar box, sour cherries. Went well with my steak. Can’t wait to see how my 2016’s develop over time. (2860 views)
Tasted by Maphill01 on 5/1/2021: Decanted several hours. Red cherry, cassis, leather and cedar. Classic Pauillac, still fresh and energetic. (2844 views)
Tasted by Orso58 on 4/10/2021 & rated 91 points: Magnum bottle
Deep red, remarkable colour for a 20 year old wine.

Nose dominated by blackcurrant and cedar, some vanilla (oak) and some spices

Medium weight and good fruit on the palate, still a bit tight with present tannins. Only decanted for 1 hour, which probably was a mistake

A good BX from an underrated vintage (2688 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
