 Tasted by chablis28 on 11/8/2014 & rated 91 points: PnP It's possible we didn't have the ideal paring here as our red bean, rice, chicken dish included andouille sausage that may have over powered its structure and flavors. Too bad as my last glass after dinner seemed to show a lot better. my last sips revealed nice red fruit, rocks and spice on a energetic frame. Tannins need a bit more time to resolve. 2 left and I'll drink them miles down the road. Excellent value, typacity and purity for $45. (2718 views)
 Tasted by short and confused on 10/11/2014 & rated 93 points: Drank in April 2014 (not 2004 as I initially recalled- it did seem like a while ago) at Zuni Cafe. From memory but I was just thinking about how much I enjoyed it and wanted to leave a note. Medium red. Lovely array of Burgundian red fruit with wilder earthy and gamey notes. Very juicy on the palate. Good mineral spine. The people at the table were surprised at how good it was. I remember them asking with delight, "What is this!?" (2761 views)

Jumps out of the glass with notes of white pepper, red cherries, raspberries, minerality and some balsamic notes. On the palate there are beautiful notes of red berries again, tons of white pepper, cinnamon, cedar wood and tobacco. Medium- bodied but pretty dense, with at least medium+ acidity providing tons of freshness and medium tannin adding structure. Very nice finish. A ridiculously beautiful and sappy Burgundy that is super fresh and has a lot of finesse and complexity for this price range. It will definitely age beautifully for quite a few years but if you don’t mind some acidity and freshness, it’s fantastic now. (3245 views)

Others less tolerant will recoil in horror. The wine has a nice, sappy persistence and good weight, so I'm not understanding some CT notes that claim otherwise. I'd buy more if I was confident the stems will integrate, but who knows? (4023 views)

 Tasted by pjaines on 7/23/2013: Hmmmm.....young as a pup and a touch chunky and disjointed right now. Definately needs to be left alone in a dark cellar for a few years, which is no surpirse. Meaty tang and a touch of cinnamon stick comes through and then a whack of hard-edged fruit. This one will be a tough one to love for the first few years of its life but I think it should stretch its legs out within 5 years and become quite a pretty. For now if you are tempted to drink one then try the 2007 which are lovely. (3409 views)

On this occasion, the wine does develop a better sense of overall balance; however, the stem notes remain dominant and distract from the overall impression of the wine.  Tasted by Michael Davidson on 5/11/2013: Definitely a wild, earthy bottle. The nose is pretty closed, but the palate is very complex. Lots of earth, some fruit. It fills the palate. There's an attractive bitter note on the finish. I really enjoyed this. (2028 views)
 Tasted by sehill on 4/14/2013 & rated 85 points: Opened and poured, this bottle never seemed to bring its elements together. It gives a good showing, but fails (even with airing) to fully harmonize. The aromatics show a mix of dark fruits, earth and stems. The color is a youthful medium ruby. The medium bodied palate also lacks an overall sense of balance with the varying elements disjointed over the course of the wines consumption. (2060 views)
 Tasted by Fitzi on 4/8/2013: The wine shows pretty good inner energy, but is otherwise shut down already. Typical CdB stoniness, pale-ish, lean and lithe, but reticent of expression, olfactory or gustatory. Okay as a learning bottle, but not much fun - fell well short of the 2010 PV les Vergellesses we opened a few weeks ago in terms of interest. A surprise. (2051 views)

Tightly entwined hints of dark berries and more predominant earth flavors on the palate.  Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 12/5/2012: Starts off quite pretty with some cherries, raspberries and pomegranate then it kicks down a few gears showing all of its grunt, torque and workman like qualities. There’s some soot, blood, iron and smoked meats. Fruits have a darker edge with air and strands of liquorice thread through the palate. It has a light creaminess from the oak and its youthful exuberance allows you to sneak a peek now, but you feel its only a matter of months before the anthocyanins monster the fruit and demands that the drinker fuck off and not come back for at least a decade.  Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 11/7/2012: Well, here's one 2010 that looks like it may not hold a candle to its 2009 counterpart. I will have to try another bottle in a few months to see if it's better, but even if it pulls it off it already seems clear that it doesn't have anywhere near the material and stuffing of the 2009. I was very surprised by the overall lightness of this vintage, probably the palest and sparsest I can remember and really without any primary fruit to it - it seemed like a wine that had already passed its youth and closed up. Nevertheless I'm optimistic about it on account of the leftovers two days later, which didn't exactly unwind any additional material but did show substantially more personality. It remained very lightweight but exhibited a ton of stony minerality and the refinement of the tannin was more evident. Still, the difference in style vis-a-vis the 2009 is massive and I'm not sure this will ever be one of the better vintages for this. (3969 views)

(Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru Île des Vergelesses) Dark cherry fruit here, showing a good intensity of aroma with savoury elements to it redolent of mushroom and truffle, but there is an appealing freshness and vibrancy to it as well. Less granular than the Savigny tasted alongside, a more integrated, admittedly chocolate-tinged polish here. Full, rich, but with a more silky tone to the structure and overall composition which I like. This is certainly no delicate lightweight though, as there is substance and potential here beneath the flavour and definition. Good potential here.  15.5-16. points

Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, Austria, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru

The appellation
At the confluence of two valleys, the appellation of Pernand-Vergelesses, perched between 290 and 360 meters, is in the northern portion of the Côte de Beaune. The AOC Pernand-Vergelesses covers 123 hectares: 90 hectares of red of which 44 are Premier Cru and 53 of white of which 17 are Premier Cru.
“Sous Frétille” has been classified as a Premier Cru since 2001 (but only for white wines.) The word “Frétille” is a derivation of “forestelle”, or forest in old French. Hence, “Sous Frétille” indiquates the geographic location of the parcel, just under the forest.
