Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 143 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Brownvino on 12/24/2015 & rated 92 points: Opened, not decanted, for two hours.

The wine looks inky colored. It smells like red currant, blackberry, stoniness and espresso. It tastes like chocolate. The body is medium/full. The wine finishes medium. (1763 views)
Tasted by Vertigo on 11/4/2015 & rated 91 points: Dark fruits, chocolate and smooth tannins. Very opulent with noticeable alcohol. Overall a nice wine but I need to be in the mood for such bold wine. (2070 views)
Tasted by jcasey555 on 10/18/2015 & rated 92 points: Has matured nicely. Better than I remember for previous bottles of this vintage. (2090 views)
Tasted by JDV.DDSPHD on 5/4/2015 & rated 90 points: Really good for the money. Not as good as the others. This had dark rich black fruit but that really is where it started to fall off from the others. Where you could taste the pencil shavings and touch of graphite the others had a medley of secondary flavors and aromas. This was completely solid though just not in the company of the others. (3181 views)
Tasted by jcasey555 on 2/15/2015 & rated 92 points: deep nose dark fruit finish may improve with more time (3473 views)
Tasted by GTFreek on 1/5/2015: Blind tasted. Black plum, black cherry, cocoa, dark chocolate, baking spice. I guessed Napa Merlot. (2798 views)
Tasted by KenPlace on 1/5/2015 & rated 91 points: Solid wine, but nothing spectacular. Cassis, dark and blue fruit, spices, french oak. (3157 views)
Tasted by WineWright on 8/31/2014 & rated 92 points: Rich, coating, with deep and dark cherry. Early at this point but accessible. Hold for now. Enjoy later. How can you lose? Sweet. (4050 views)
Tasted by curtr on 5/7/2014 & rated 91 points: From 375 ml. Decanted 2 hours. A bit young, but starting to open up. (3659 views)
Tasted by Kriz on 3/14/2014 & rated 90 points: What to say.. Great nose: blackberry, blueberry, flowers, meat and a hint of leather. On the palate it's one dimensional: Full bodied, smooth and good tannins. But it's boring, so boring. After one glass I had enough, this is not the wine I like. Bob will love it probably. Annoying high and sharp alcohol on the tongue and your throat. Hard to score... I have to give it 90 points because it's solid and well made. But personally three or 4 points less because I don't like these types of wine. (4458 views)
Tasted by dbg on 1/8/2014: Cellared since release. Perfect cork and fill. Dark red/purple to rim. Cassis, dark berries, tar on the nose, full body, ripe dark fruits, good balance, well-integrated oak much less prominent than last bottle, oak, smooth tannins, drinks well now and should hold for 5-10 years. Excellent. (4700 views)
Tasted by George Lopez on 1/5/2014 & rated 90 points: Really good right out of the bottle. (4600 views)
Tasted by Italiana on 12/17/2013: Inky dark color. Expressive nose. Rich, full bodied. Hides the alcohol well. Giving the next bottle a couple of years. (3988 views)
Tasted by dbg on 11/30/2013: Cellared since release. Perfect cork and fill. Dark red/purple to rim. Cassis, blacberry, tarry vanilla oak on the nose, full body, ripe dark gruits, decent balance, noticeable oak and smooth tannins, should drink well for 5-10 years. Excellent. (3620 views)
Tasted by MDRwinos on 11/25/2013 & rated 89 points: Not as impressive compared to the restaurant purchase last year. Needed a solid 1:30 decant time. Much better as time evolved. By the 2nd day it was as remembered. (2931 views)
Tasted by Trolson on 11/3/2013 & rated 93 points: I just had the wonderful experience of taste testing this with Shafer's other 2009 Relentless and Merlot. Each was greatly appreciated. (2869 views)
Tasted by mactheknife on 10/13/2013 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured; no decanting; opened up over time with dinner; nice balance and great dark fruit. Touch of vanilla nicely integrated.
Got a lot of life left; should be beautiful in another 2 years. (3084 views)
Tasted by michigan dogs on 9/20/2013 & rated 92 points: high end Cab, well worth the price (3379 views)
Tasted by Krakajack on 8/16/2013 & rated 93 points: Fantastic (3032 views)
Tasted by webbaker on 8/2/2013 & rated 93 points: Decanted for about an hour, then consumed over the next 24. No sediment to speak of. Wonderful, dark, rich fruit flavors, touch of tar and maybe smoked meat. Tannins still a bit firm, but drinking quite nicely. Wish I had more. (3749 views)
 Tasted by pc2006mg on 7/3/2013 & rated 94 points: Excellent! (3631 views)
Tasted by egh on 7/2/2013 & rated 92 points: Fuller bodied, structured, muscular, layered, dense, dark, somewhat brooding, firm, gripping, and long. With all of that said, this was still a surprisingly approachable if obviously youthful, tasty, and hedonistic offering with notions of black currant, blackberry, black licorice, bittersweet dark chocolate, and oak/barrel spice. (3180 views)
Tasted by sjdcellar on 7/1/2013 & rated 93 points: delicious bottle - currants, vanilla and lots of black fruit. excellent (3058 views)
Tasted by 1961Vintage on 6/2/2013 & rated 92 points: Deep red color...brooding flavors. Great out of the bottle..Solid on the fruit and balance. Very early still in its development. Complexity should improve with additional bottle age. (3407 views)
Tasted by Puteljen! on 5/14/2013 & rated 90 points: Very much cabernet, and very much california. Actually very much is a good way of describing this wine as there is a lot of everything, or at least fruit and alcohol. The bouquet gives up black currants, boysenberries and blackberries mixed with some vanilla, chocolate and oak-spice. Similar impressions on the palate. Smooth with low acid, low tannin and not much in the way of minerals. Finish is medium long with a slight heat from the alcohol, but still enjoyable.

This is really not my style, but impressive none the less. Others round the table liked it more than I did. For the hedonist.

A word of warning: more than two glasses will give you a headache the next day (15,3% ABV) (3632 views)

Shafer

Producer website
John Shafer and his family founded Shafer Vineyards, located in the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley, in 1979. From the Shafers' first wine, a 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon,
their wines have won much acclaim. Today, the Shafers farm 200 acres of vineyard in the Stags Leap District, Carneros and Oak Knoll regions. Their flagship wine, Hillside Select,
is produced from selected blocks of the family's hillside vineyards and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. They also produce Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay, Merlot, One Point Five
(Cabernet Sauvignon) and Relentless (a Syrah/Petite Sirah blend), which was named #1 wine of the year by Wine Spectator's "Top 100" of 2012.

2013 Vintage Notes:
"Napa Valley and virtually all of the North Coast of California (which obviously includes Sonoma and Mendocino Counties as well) has been on a qualitative tear since 2012. 2012 was a great vintage for nearly every varietal in North Coast California, but what is even more remarkable is that 2013 may turn out to be the finest vintage I have experienced in tasting North Coast varietals over the last 37 years. It's a game-changer in terms of the consistency of quality, the depth of quality, and the across-the-board excellence for so many wines." - Robert Parker
