Tasted by TashNYC on 1/9/2021 & rated 92 points: Cherry, berry, earth, spice, tar and a touch of licorice. A great pairing with our Mamoun’s lunch, especially the chicken kebabs, lamb shawarma, hummus and tahini sauce. (471 views)
Tasted by TashNYC on 11/14/2020 & rated 91 points: Halal Chicken with Wine (Princeton, NJ): Cherry, berry, spice, earth, a touch of licorice and some flowers. Lots of red spice. We found another 8 bottles of this.

Delicious with the halal chicken with harissa.

Tasted by TashNYC on 10/26/2018 & rated 91 points: Cherry, berry, spice, earth, a touch of licorice and some flowers. Really tasty with our Mamoun's food. I especially liked it with the hummus, the lamb shwarma and the lamb kebabs this time (rather than the lamb tikka). With Nicole and Jonathan before the Halloween parade. Sadly, this was our last bottle. Drink now. (542 views)
Tasted by Jcalvin3 on 12/27/2017 & rated 91 points: Great bottle. On the feminine side. Good structure and full body. Dominated by soft earthiness and aromas of blueberry and currant. (742 views)
Tasted by 560 B&W on 6/29/2017 & rated 88 points: A bit too hot, although there are some interesting notes. 14.4% (1016 views)
Tasted by ToddS on 8/19/2015: Definitely best with the age. Balance is there. (1713 views)
Tasted by GoBlue2002 on 11/20/2014 & rated 90 points: I really didn't know what to make of this at first as I couldn't quite wrap my head around the aromas, and the taste seemed bland. However, this opened up over time and was a knockout with dinner. Soft and subtle, yet with plenty of structure. Quite light in color, which betrayed the fuller body. Aromas and flavors of blueberry, dried fruit, currant, and a touch of spice & leather.
Overall I enjoyed this, but just a touch too AFWE for me. (1657 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 11/6/2014 & rated 89 points: Not up to the 2008. A lot of structure, perhaps it needs more time. (1442 views)
Tasted by GrandeSerataFuori on 9/13/2014 & rated 89 points: Great previous notes below. This is an interesting wine. Felt mature to me. Felt more French and less Cali than many other of Pax's wines. I likes the floral, vegetal thing. Light color and good with foods. MMM. (1453 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 3/30/2014 & rated 91 points: Delicious. I hate to compare it to a French Rhone, but if this was served blind, that's what I would have guessed. Nicely restrained for a CA blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre. Good acid, medium weight. Ann and I killed this bottle and were left wanting more. Improved with a little air. Should drink well for a couple more years. (1524 views)
Tasted by Cadby on 2/1/2014 & rated 90 points: Wind gap 2009 Rana +++ $35

Orange edge, herbal nose beef blood, sturdy pleasure.

Tasted by stubbie999 on 10/9/2013: A quick note - really lovely, a bigger wine though with plenty of acidity to keep it moving on the palate. Typical red grenache fruit, but the Mourvedre component really adds a layer of funky interest. Well balanced and coming around - the last glass after a couple hours in the decanter was better than the first. (1168 views)
Tasted by MattMauldin on 1/31/2013 & rated 90 points: Tasting at The Watering Hole- Sandhi & other Terroir Selections (Los Olivos, CA): Dense ruby color. Notes of ashy earth, fig & strawberry. Layered palate with darker fruits and lots of earthy mineral depth. Some rustic graininess to the fine tannins set against a polished feel and a lingering finish. (2182 views)
Tasted by frank hertz on 1/5/2013: wonderfully deep spicy aromas over more gentle sweet cherry notes; very expressive; a pleasant meaty funk arrived a few hours on, was quite welcome. fruit came through with purity and finesse on the palate. i was totally into it. wind gap has a new devotee in maine. (1974 views)
Tasted by mmurry on 7/27/2012 & rated 92 points: Game and pepper on the nose, with black currant and leather, some floral notes, a little dirt, and a hint of cherry at the end. Game a pepper on the palate, with black fruit and leather, and a good earthy finish. (1522 views)
Tasted by Baggio on 7/21/2012 & rated 90 points: Very nice, but extremely locked up. As much in need of decanting as any wine I've had this year.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
