Community Tasting Notes (average 92.1 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 24 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Ryan-ParkCity on 3/3/2024 & rated 93 points: Still outstanding, and holding up very well. (82 views)
Tasted by Hodad on 5/20/2019 & rated 92 points: Golden-straw color. Lemon-Kumquat citrus and minerals on the nose and palate. Silky with good acidity, balance, and long-slightly tart finish. Minerality really improved with cellar aging. Delicious! (1424 views)
Tasted by DoubleMagnum on 12/1/2018 & rated 91 points: This has all the signs of a great white. Great nose, full of citrus, flowers and stone fruits. On the palate it is ripe, with medium weight and matching acidity. Had I had it by itself, I could've confused it with premier cru Chassagne. We had it next to a Drouhin Folatieres which just knocked it out. Rita's finish is shorter. (1527 views)
Tasted by mouton45 on 2/16/2016 & rated 93 points: Brought to wine group dinner tonight at Two Chefs. Rich and ripe, very balanced flavors. Touch of oak but not overbearing. One of my favorite Cali chardonnays (2709 views)
Tasted by gschneider on 3/20/2015 & rated 94 points: This wine is awesome. Viscous, full bodied with unreal fruit and hint of spice that completes the wine. Very tightly integrated. Hints of apple pie and pear (3162 views)
Tasted by debow on 10/4/2014: A bit tart, acidic with character, buttery, oaky, citrus notes, lemo peel (3342 views)
Tasted by JOsgood on 10/2/2014: This is a delicious Chardonnay and a good step up over the regular Sandhi Chardonnay. Multiple layers of flavor and good acidity. (2464 views)
Tasted by JOsgood on 9/17/2014 & rated 92 points: This was excellent. Pure Chardonnay fruit with a kiss of oak. Long on the finish. (2374 views)
Tasted by wine4lux on 8/29/2014 & rated 94 points: Enjoyed a bottle at Michael Mina, paired very well with the black cod and lobster pot pie entrees. Honey and apple on the palate with a very light touch of oak. (1261 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 6/29/2014: From memory over dinner last night, and I am fairly certain this was the bottling. While I liked the fruit and expression of the wine, as it's in the leaner camp, there was some toasted oak on the aromatic that is also at play. I'm coming pretty close to the place where I am really well anchored into the chardonnay camp where the wine is done in some kind of vessel that eliminates the oak signature--concrete, old wood, whatever it may be. I liked this wine but take my comment about the toasted note into context. (1533 views)
Tasted by Seafoam Manor on 2/6/2014 & rated 94 points: Slight marshmallow with great rich fruit on both the nose and the palate. This strikes a great balance of being hugely flavorful, while being medium bodied and silky smooth in the mouth. This is just really delicious. Provides the best of several different worlds. Not super acidic, but there is enough to give it an energy and brightness. I don't know if it will be the longest lived wine, but I think this is still improving and is not peaking. Nice mild mineral note on the finish. (1119 views)
Tasted by mouton45 on 6/4/2013 & rated 92 points: I spotted a local wine shop and grabbed a bottle based on its strong pro reviews (RP 94, ST 93, WS 92, RJ 93). The wine didn't disappoint in the least, though I thought it wasn't the perfect pairing with Cathy's delicious chicken in sherry cream sauce dinner, which usually works best with an oaky chardonnay. Sandhi wasn't, but I think this would go great with fish or chicken without a rich and heavy sauce. The only downer was when I went back to buy the rest on the shelf, someone else beat me to it. Arrgh (1653 views)
Tasted by MattMauldin on 1/31/2013 & rated 92 points: Tasting at The Watering Hole- Sandhi & other Terroir Selections (Los Olivos, CA): Straw gold in the glass. Honeycomb and butterscotch is intermingled with orange and lime zest on the bouquet. Silken texture on the palate with hints of earth to go along with citrus and mineral flavors. Balanced bright acid notes and a full fleshy finish. Excellent and should continue to develop. (2411 views)
Tasted by cartime on 1/16/2013 & rated 90 points: Lemon curd, white vanilla, creme brûlée. Oak was sticking out awkwardly at first, but by Day 2 was better integrated. Better with food at this point, but should do well with 2 or 3 years of bottle age. Very rich palate with citrusy acidity cutting through. Would probably give this 92-93 with a bit more time. (1746 views)
Tasted by scooter260 on 1/12/2013 & rated 95 points: Outstanding! One of the top Chardonnays of the year for me. Super crisp but tons of depth. (1633 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 9/1/2012 & rated 93 points: Oily, ultra-clean, vanillin, citrus, and pear flavors (1842 views)
Tasted by Gobi on 8/19/2012 & rated 94 points: Pale yellow in color with a very complex nose filled with poached pears, guava, papaya, mango, orange rind, lemon, some roasted nuts, with some hidden mineral components. On the palate the wine is smooth with layers of sweet fruit, great acidity, and great minerality. An oily textured mid-bodied wine that is tightly knit, utter balance, quite impressive. (1051 views)
Tasted by creno on 7/5/2012 & rated 89 points: Clear, bright, medium depth straw color with thin watery edge.
Citrus, honey, pear, stone/mineral aroma of average length and fine character.
Med-dry, adequate sugar, smooth. Fresh acidity (citric).
Full body with generous alcohol.
A developing wine, balanced and correct (1476 views)
Tasted by amateurwino on 4/18/2012 & rated 91 points: Quite oaky on the nose. Palate is also quite rich. Pretty though. 90-91+ (1685 views)
Tasted by beezer6 on 4/16/2012 & rated 89 points: Tenzing Portfolio Tasting (Tenzing - Chicago, IL): More minerals, softer and less oak than the regular AVA. But still, for over fifty dollars, I'd pass.
Still kind of overdone and not really my style, though going in the right direction. (2127 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 3/19/2012 & rated 93 points: 2012 In Pursuit of Balance Tasting (Julia Morgan Ballroom, Merchants Exchange Building, San Francisco, California): Light yellow color; apple, tart pear, nutty note nose; tasty, tart pear, lemon, mineral palate; medium-plus finish (3970 views)

Sandhi Wines

producer website

Sandhi is a small-scale producer in Santa Rita Hills, California.

The winery was founded by legendary sommelier Rajat Parr and winemaker Sashi Moorman.

Sandhi wants to represent the sacred union between man, earth and vine needed to create the best wines. The focus is mainly on chardonnay and pinot noir from Santa Barbara County and the vineyard locations are carefully selected for their unique qualities and personalities.

The wines are often described as being able to beat many great Burgundians in blind tastings and really show off the expressiveness and elegance that California has to offer.

These finer edge qualities are no surprise as the majority of the fruit is from the Domaine de la Cote estate vineyards, home to some of the country's rarest and most high-toned Pinots.

Tasting Note
Beetroot, cherry and plum flavours are most in evidence along with a developing gamey, autumnal note that will develop further in time.

A contradictory Pinot of purity and depth.

About Sandhi

Sandhi is the partner wine label to Domaine de la Cote, founded by Rajat Parr and Sashi Moorman in the Santa Rita Hills area of Santa Barbara, up the coast from Los Angeles.

Sandhi are generally more approachable wines, to the palate and the wallet, than Domaine de la Cote, and explore the potential of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from across Santa Barbara and California.

Sandhi means 'treaty' or 'alliance' in Sanskrit, to represent the partnerships he has formed with local, sustainable grape growers who supply much of the fruit for Sandhi wines.

2010 Sandhi Wines Chardonnay Rita's Crown

A palate-coating and layered wine, the 2010 Rita’s Crown Chardonnay offers rich, resonant fruit that is juxtaposed with mineral notes of crushed rock and candied ginger. There is ample acid to hold the wine’s richest characteristics in check and this wine should pair marvelously with decadent ocean fare such as lobster claws and drawn butter or a hearty seafood risotto.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
