Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 94.7 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 12 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by johnh1001 on 4/6/2014 & rated 95 points: Paris Club dinner with JK (Chicago): This started out a little subdued and slightly funky, but over a couple hours kept getting better. My last sip was the best. Once it opened, elegant red fruit, dried roses, spice and a potpourri of other nuances on the nose. Fresh and lively on the palate with nice energy and grip on the finish. The complex delicacy of this wine was quite an intellectual experience. (1990 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 4/3/2014 & rated 96 points: Eight (Not Angry) Men Drinking Great Wine (Paris Club - Chicago IL): Great color, 2cm ullage. Open 1 hour before serving. Cork ever-so-slightly protruded, very soaked through (thank you, Durand). Started slightly musty and almost a little muddy. Within 15 minutes, fruit started getting more fresh, baking spice emerged with depth and an intensity that expanded over the next couple of hours. Kept getting better. My very last taste (at 2+ hours in glass) seemed slightly muddy, but I think I had just poured myself the dregs from the last of the bottle. (2907 views)
(2639 views)
Tasted by steinersing on 3/2/2012 & rated 95 points: Rare Wine Dinner - quick impressions: Fresh, almost exotic in its complexity, long, beautiful bottle. (5583 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 2/22/2012 & rated 95 points: Legends Dinner at La Paulee de San Francisco (Napa Valley Reserve - St. Helena CA): Nose starts with great red fruit, then Asian spice, followed by fresh mushroom aromas. Similar on palate with a great combination of flavors, supported wonderfully by lots of structure. Long and textured. This is an incredibly elegant wine. (5945 views)
Tasted by jamiekutch on 3/15/2010: Rich and dark. The most powerful of the wines with deeper tannins, aromatic intensity, a longer / longest palate feel. The Richebourg terroir shows through. (4621 views)
Tasted by winefool on 3/1/2006 & rated 96 points: (from Jeroboam) Bright crystal crimson. Absolutely wonderful pinot aroma - lovely! Super rich ripe complex red fruit with bracing acidity to support it. Among the best burgundies I've had to date! 3/06 (4030 views)
Tasted by 83AJ on 2/5/2006 & rated 95 points: Lighter on the nose then in the past with a 30 second finish. Bric color, flavors from ever corner. no need to decant. (2532 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/5/2005 & rated 98 points: Grand Cru Burgundy 1920-1971 (University Club - Chicago IL): From jeroboam. Incredible nose of rose petals, cinnamon, nutmeg, and concentrated mushrooms along with persistent red fruit. Red fruit leads the charge on the palate, equally matched with classic sous bois and good spice. Everything seems in perfect harmony with this wine right now. Crisp acidity comes out on the very long finish adding even more texture. Certainly my favorite wine tonight in an amazing lineup. Quite possibly the best wine I have ever had. (3425 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, Austria, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)
Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates
