Tasted by Wine Canuck on 6/30/2023 & rated 92 points: An Epic Summer Wine Weekend - Year 2; 6/30/2023-7/2/2023 (Muskoka, Ontario, Canada): [Tasted Double Blind] This pours light ruby in the glass. No bricking. Initially there is notable gym sock reduction, but that dissipated with air and was gone by the time I re-tasted the following day. Otherwise the nose is light, red fruited and airy, much like the appearance in the glass, showing mixed florals, red cherry, new leather, bay leaf, and chalky dry soil. The palate is again light and bright showing significant red cherry and cranberry on entry. Tannin is medium and acid is medium plus confirming my suspicion that this is Italian and likely Sangiovese. While there is structure on the mid-palate, the finish replays the elegance coming across as light and airy. Elements of this wine reminded me of some producers Rosso di Montalcino or even perhaps how Fuligni's Brunello Normale can show with the bright red fruit and lower level of extract. On reveal I was pleased to see this old friend aging nicely and slowly. I have one bottle in the cellar I wont touch for a decade. Not that this is showing too young, but it's also not at all mature.  Tasted by CADomer on 10/8/2022 & rated 93 points: A beautiful bottle of wine that really needed 3-4 hours to open fully. Darker berries and worn saddle leather evolved into brighter red berries, fresh herbs and high-toned florality. The weight was elegant on this delicious wine. What a success in 2009! (1201 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 7/24/2022: Last bottle of this vintage sadly... the nose was exquisite; pure essence of sangiovese; initially started out with leather, earth, dried violet, cherry, and herbs. A beautiful mature nose. With about 45 minutes of air however the leather and earth largely faded and the fruit and floral notes became fresher and more vibrant with a more mineral tinged spine. The palate was delightful from the start and while it definitely became fresher and more mineral driven, it was always pure seduction and pleasure. Good depth and exquisite balance. Montevertine rarely disappoints. (1408 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 4/18/2022: Scant fruit and loads of acidity. The most drinkable of the three bottles we've opened since 2018 but still very underwelming, especially when compared to the positive experiences others report. (1674 views)
Tasted by bags on 8/21/2021: this is so ready. pop 'n pour with pasta, waiting for Hurricane Henri. Sappy, rich, and deep. Just what we want in Montevertine. (2151 views)
Tasted by slanum on 9/2/2020: Bright and balanced; fully mature for my taste. (2454 views)
Tasted by marcelk on 8/12/2020: Still too young, next one in 2-4 years. (2021 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 5/2/2020: Every time I drink Montevertine, I wonder why I don't buy more and drink it more often. So silky and suave with perfect balance, but plenty of flavor intensity. I could enjoy this every week and not grow tired of it. This still felt quite young really and easily has another 5-10 years of positive development. (2109 views)
Tasted by bags on 4/21/2020: very nice. Not the best version I've tasted, but still bright and tasty. May be better 2nd day--we'll see. (1990 views)
Tasted by SLMTcellar on 4/13/2020 & rated 92 points: Easter wine with short rib (1633 views)
Tasted by RichardP on 3/31/2020 & rated 92 points: Light strawberry on the nose. On the palate, classic Sangiovese cherry, some black and red berry fruit, and notes of strawberry and savory spices on the medium finish, with moderate tannins and good acidity. This has a darker profile than the average Chianti. It was an average to good value at about $45. (1346 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 3/23/2020: Decanted for aeration, no sediment. Bright ruby color with decent fruit and development, and it was quite good with our beef-tomato farfalle but toward the end of the bottle it became more astringent. Better than our no-there-there bottle in 2018, but merely a decent dinner wine. Doesn't live up to its reputation. (1332 views)
Tasted by CADomer on 5/5/2019 & rated 92 points: Dark wild berries, savory black minerality, baking spice, and a flutter of rose petals. I feel like it never really unwound and showed me what it was all about. What I did see, I liked though. Hoping my next bottle is a touch more expressive and pretty. Don't get me wrong though, this was good stuff. (1868 views)
Tasted by earlemf on 1/5/2019 & rated 92 points: Still young 1.5.19 (1864 views)
Tasted by earlemf on 11/6/2018 & rated 90 points: Tannic and austere. It is starting to develop. Re-taste 2020 if I'm alive. (1951 views)
Tasted by James Kim on 11/3/2018 & rated 91 points: Gathering at Brian's (Brian's Home): Shy aromas of cherries, raspberries, and flowers. Nice lifted palate of strawberries, cherries and flowers with excellent concentration and acids. Balanced by moderate tannins. The wine definitely tastes young but gives joy with every sip. (2123 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 10/7/2018: Alas, not doing what I want it too. Becoming more dark tobacco and earthy notes, not to my liking. Maybe try a fresher vintage tonight? Otherwise... hmm... (2280 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 8/18/2018: Another excellent bottle of this. Still young, but delicious and developing nicely. Beautiful red fruit, anise, tobacco, and earth. (1762 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 7/15/2018: Very different from the last reviewer's experience which I presume is more typical than mine. Our bottle was dull, thin and screechy. (1788 views)
Tasted by DK Amateur on 4/21/2018: Decanted shortly before serving and drunk out of Riedel Vinum Bordeaux glasses. This is the best showing I have had of this vintage: It has density and elegance with superb juicyness and good acidity and tannin. Wonderful aromas of sour cherries and dust. Still young. Better than the following Il Carnasciale of the same vintage. (1825 views)
Tasted by gilrbo on 12/28/2017: Drunk at a dinner with friends, comparing 4 Chianti Classico and a Montecucco.
The freshest and the one with most tension of the five, starting to show some signs of evolution on the nose. Lovely now, but it will be interesting to try again in a few years from now. (2291 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 8/6/2017: This is continuing to improve, starting to develop some secondary notes giving it more complexity on the nose. There is now some savory notes alongside the lovely red fruit, anise, mint, and floral notes. The palate remains delicious and beautifully balanced. Should be excellent over the next 10 years. (2662 views)
Tasted by carstenf on 7/25/2017 & rated 92 points: Sangiovese and we drink that grape too selten. It was very nice ,
Tobacco , cherry and a Walk in the woods... So fine now (2755 views)
Tasted by rhit on 12/17/2016: Much better showing than my previous bottle. More salty-sweet dried cherry fruit and acid. Delicious the next day as well. (2744 views)
Tasted by Gian on 11/30/2016 & rated 89 points: Rosso rubino , frutta rossa , ciliegie, armadio chiuso , in bocca bella acidità, fruttato (2629 views)

Sangiovese Blend

Sangiovese blend is used in CellarTracker for Italian wines to represent wines predominantly made of Sangiovese and blended with traditional Italian grapes. It is different than SuperTuscan which is a blend of Sangiovese with non-traditional (eg Bordeaux) varieties, often in closer to equal portions. For example, Chianti is at least 80% Sangiovese and will always be listed Sangiovese blend.
