Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.2 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 36 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Bob H on 8/7/2021: Gorgeous and complex nose - so much going on, with petrol, stone fruits and minerality. So nice, you almost don't want to drink it ;^)

Pretty impressive on the palate as well - really spreads out. I think I mentioned this in my last note, but for a Trocken Riesling, this has some serious palate presence. Drinking great at 10 years of age. (836 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 6/9/2021: I’m getting towards the end of a case of this that I bought on release, and this is still drinking nicely, although surprisingly enough (at least to me) the wine now shows a richness to the fruit that I don’t previously recall and wouldn’t generally expect with a Trocken-styled wine.

It has lost some of it’s early angularity with the years, and feels like it has comfortably settled into middle age at this point. If I think of doing so, I may put away a bottle to check in on it in another five years just to see what’s happened in the interim, but this is pretty decent at age 10. (858 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 11/8/2020: Similar in color to the ‘04 I just tried, but this is clearly more lively on the palate. Sweet and tart white fruits, ample acidity and decent persistence. Drinks fine by itself, but I’m grilling up some boneless pork chops later today and this should be fine with those as well. (1059 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 1/6/2020 & rated 92 points: This wine has hit its sweet spot. Better as it warms up. A hint of petrol on the nose. But after the hint the fruit aromatics take over. Stone fruits with a hint of tropical. Vibrant acidity without being too tart. I like this quite a bit. Great with a spicy Indonesian chicken soup! (1415 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 1/26/2019: Lovely nose, with a hint of sweetness and tropical fruit as well.

Despite the nose, quite dry on the palate, although there is a lot going on here. I like this, but couldn't single out anything specifically as to why I do. (1538 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 5/15/2018: Smells nice with faint petrol on the nose. This has softened since the last bottle and seems a little rounder and less sharp. Nice fruit, with light slate and what struck me as banana cream accents. Lowish acidity. Pretty good and very easy to drink. (1477 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 11/18/2017 & rated 90 points: Solid Riesling. Still seemed a tad tight. (1763 views)
Tasted by Balthasar on 9/23/2017 & rated 91 points: Expressive nose with peach, honey and smoke. Creamy mouthfeel, even tendency to opulence, but not flabby at all. Refreshing, vibrant acidity backbone, minerals and spices. A pleasure to drink and great QPR. (1973 views)
Tasted by EMAZurich on 8/11/2017 & rated 92 points: Grossartige Rieslingnase, glasklar, blumig, Honig.
Tolle Balance am Gaumen, dichte, süssliche Frucht, druckvoll - gepaart mit stützender, spritziger Säure, prickelnd. Glasklare Aromatik auch hier und sehr lange nachklingend. Grossartig! (1907 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 8/11/2017 & rated 92 points: medium golden color. Complex mineral notes of wet stone, citrus, peach, mint and a touch of smoke. On the palate there is tons of saline minerality again and a very fresh and pure fruit of mainly yellow fruits. It's medium+ bodied but dense, with medium+ acidity. Long and complex finish. Again a really good and complex slightly aged Riesling. Excellent value. (2452 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 11/19/2016 & rated 93 points: Similar to my last two tasting notes, but the tertiary notes of aged Riesling (petroleum) are starting to kick in. One of the best values in white wine I know anywhere in the world. (2189 views)
Tasted by RolfT on 11/19/2016 & rated 89 points: Woah - this has gone from 40 to 85 in maturity since march15. Same well-stored batch and both of two bottles opened showed this level of maturity.

Im not so sure about its potential to age further. Drink now - 2020. (1775 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 8/11/2016 & rated 93 points: Showing very similar to my tasting note of 6/28/2015. A beautifully expressive, ripe and complex Riesling with a lot of tension. Love it! (2207 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 4/23/2016: Light yellow in the glass; white fruits (pineapple in the mix), slate and a "sweet" note on the nose.

Wow, this gets your attention on the palate - a lot going on here. Sweet and tart notes intermingled here, and a lengthy finish that I am still tasting as I type this. I hadn't tried a bottle of this in about 18 months, but I would say this has "loosened up" quite a bit, and I like it a lot in terms of where it is today. This also strikes me as a wine with the possibility for further favorable development in the coming years. (1638 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 6/28/2015 & rated 93 points: Lighter golden color. Complex nose of slate/flintstone, yellow fruit, citrus, peach, mint and a touch of smoke. On the palate there is tons of saline minerality again and a very fresh and pure fruit of mainly yellow fruits. It's medium+ bodied but dense, with high acidity and just a little bit of residual sugar (still feels dry though). Long and complex finish. Year after year, this is one of the best dry Rieslings I know in Germany. And 2011 is an additional step up from my perspective. What a great wine and a fantastic value! (2585 views)
Tasted by jrobs7777 on 11/15/2014: Really solid. The acidity and weight are nicely balanced. Nice salinity, minerals and orchard fruits. Delicious, very versatile and a terrific value. (2103 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 9/27/2014: I picked up a case of this a while back, but hadn't gotten around to pulling a cork until today. Light yellow-gold in the glass; I love the nose here, with slate nuances, a saline note, crisp apples - a lot going on here right now.

Sweet & sour fruit on the palate, with nice persistence on the finish. Light-bodied. The nose is more interesting than the palate today, as the wine has not fully knit itself together yet and comes across a little "angular". I like the potential here, though. (2133 views)
Tasted by David_T on 6/21/2014 & rated 90 points: Dry with aromas/flavors of white flowers, white peaches and lime. Tons and tons of minerality/stone/graphite notes let its terroir shine. Medium+ acidity and a fairly long finish. Drink now or over the next five years. (2247 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 5/26/2014 & rated 88 points: Paired with a couple fresh caught large mouth bass from the pond behind our house. The fish were breaded and fried in a cast iron skillet on the grill. The nose on the wine was a little subdued initially, showing just a little citrus and hints of minerals and rocks. With some air, a subtle flinty, petrol note emerged. On the palate the wine was crisp with lots of acid. The wine showed almost an electric, effervescent quality initially. With some air it smoothed out some and showed a little richer with a touch of tart apple to go along with the citrusy fruit. The wine still stayed dry and crisp though. Overall an enjoyable wine, but not as exciting as the first bottle we had. I think my review on that one might of been a little too glowing. I think I will wait two years before I open another one. (2079 views)
Tasted by Highmountain on 4/30/2014 & rated 90 points: In line with previous note. Ample nose with petroleum, grape and minerals. Full and rich taste with an almost buttery finish. Absolutely dry and with good length. A very positive surprise. Well build Riesling for a very good price. (2142 views)
Tasted by Highmountain on 4/10/2014 & rated 89 points: Ample nose with petroleum, grape and minerals. Full and rich taste with an almost buttery finish. Absolutely dry and with good length. A very positive surprise. Well build Riesling for a very good price. (1864 views)
Tasted by reuptake on 3/16/2014 & rated 91 points: Great, complex, concentrated with a distinctive smoky minerality and some honey aromas. Bit of spiceness. (1616 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 12/25/2013: This shows a mix of citrus, apple and nectarine along with some minerality and a faint petrol note this time. Fruity and dry. This was well received by everyone. (1510 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 7/29/2013: I think this is bottle 4 from a mixed riesling purchase that I ordered from Down to Earth wines. The previous wines have all been solid but I was starting to think Riesling is just not for me. Then Ann pulled this bottle out tonight and poured it for me blind. The wine had a good chill on it and despite the cool temp is pretty expressive. Aromas of strong citrus and minerality. On the palate, intense lemon citrus, apricot, tangerine, stoney minerals, some salinity and mouth watering acidity. Delicious. We killed the bottle and wanted more. Hands down the best Riesling we've had. Ok, we've probably only had a couple dozen before but this was excellent. (1817 views)
Tasted by gnosis on 6/28/2013: Wow, so good. I am not always a dry riesling fan, but this one certainly "does it" for me. I agree the most with Xavier Auerbach. Lovely aromatics upon pouring and in the glass. I said mandarin orange, but apricot is also correct. What is key here is lovely complex aromatics of fruits and earthy minerality. I love when I get minerality on the nose. The difference for me as well for a dry riesling is that this is high acidity which keeps the aromas in-line and very fresh on the palate. Absolutely lovely. I would most definitely buy this again. Stellar. (1874 views)

#2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)
