Tasted by Puteljen! on 4/7/2023 & rated 93 points: Some time in the cellar has brought this wine almost to the next level. Now quite complex with pine, paintbox, cedar, cherries, rosemary, sage, sloanberries etc. i can go on. An impression of a warm garden in a conifer forest. Good lenght, well balanced, elegant without any rough edges. There is tannin but just enough to give some support and structure. Maybe hints of smoke but a lot less than I remember from its youth. Drinking very well now and will probably hold for another 10+ years without problems. Decanted for about 60 minutes, drunk over another 90. (500 views)
Tasted by MuddyBoots on 7/19/2022: Good color. Reticent nose. Tight. Dark red fruit - not much else. In contrast great attack on entry - acid in particular in very evident driving the palate forward. Grippy tannin - drying the gums. But also beautifully cool ripe red fruit with some complexity. Pure. Quite primary still. Medium weight. Today - with almost no air - the structural elements hold sway. Consistent with the notes of others below, I suggest a very long decant or wait five or ten years. Will surely be very good. Serious wine for the price point. Bought on release. Hold. (612 views)
Tasted by aChave on 4/21/2020 & rated 92 points: Clear dark red color. Tight on opening, with just hints of dark fruit. After an hour in the decanter developed dark cherry and a bit of smokey complexity. After 2 hours the lighter red fruits emerged. Middle weight, nice acidity, some tannic structure beneath. Good complexity on the finish. A fine food accompaniment when looking for a lighter weight red with good fruit and a clean mouth feel. (1088 views)
Tasted by PaulusLoZebra on 3/31/2020 & rated 93 points: Terre Nere’s 2010 Etna Rosso Guardiola at age ten has a transparent ruby color with a darker core, and is just beginning to show some age at the edge. It was decanted and at first was closed tight, with prominent tannins. After 30 minutes a delicious sweetness emerged along with some characteristic Etna aromas, but it did not reach its full elegant self until the end of the evening and was, in fact, better on night two. It is a light-weight wine, but with imposing flavors and structure. If in normal times Etna reds from Nerello Mascalese get compared with Nebbiolo wines from Piemonte, Sangiovese wines from Chianti, and Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy, this wine is definitely Nebbiolo-like. It is austere and structured, with some bright red fruit flavors, lip-smacking acidity, and very prominent tannins. This wine is much more about flavor than aroma, and much more about salinity and minerality than about fruit. It absolutely needs food. As mentioned, even better on night two. Very good QPR.  Tasted by Rich S on 4/22/2017 flawed bottle: Corked. Bummer (2694 views)
Tasted by PaulusLoZebra on 3/24/2016 & rated 92 points: Typical translucent Nerello Mascalese color, with dark hints. Closed, tight upon opening, after one hour it opened up to a big, complex mixture of fragrances: spring blossoms, crushed strawberry and raspberry, minerals, fruit brandy, earth. Excellent but understated acidity, high-toned, great delineation and structure, light, silky mouth-feel, mid-weight, very long finish. Big aromas and flavors in a light, airy package. Prominent tannin; that shouldn't have surprised me, as I find that to be a characteristic of Terre Nere's Etna reds, but I was expecting the tannin to be more integrated at this stage, and I dropped it a point for that reason. So it is going to be very interesting to see what happens to this wine, and that tannin, with further age. (3046 views)
Tasted by Omar Khayyam on 1/1/2016: Drank this too early probably, either off bottle or in a tunnel and not finding its way out, thin, green, discombobulated. Ended up cooking some small onions in the last part of the bottle. (3338 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 11/12/2015: Lovely, balanced, resolved red fruit with some dried spice, long finish. Shows some age and some resolution to the palate, but not that exciting overall. Canton Lounge. (2934 views)
Tasted by Christoffer78 on 6/21/2014 & rated 93 points: As lovely as during last tasting. The most amazing feature of this effort is the fruit. It is so expressive, yet very delicate and has an almost subtle way of exposing itself. There are red currant, cherry and lovely lime zest but also the very typical tones of lava and earth. All combined into a stunning whole. The palate adds nicely to the overall experience with perfect balance, but still rather harsh silky tannins. I am confident the wine will integrate even better with time. The length on the finish lasts som 50 seconds and adds that little extra oohmpff. An amazing wine! (4439 views)
Tasted by Eric on 5/8/2014: Consumed across two days. On the first day it was tight, tight, tight. Really quite austere but smokey and loaded with minerals. On the second day it really unfolded to show much more depth of fruit with zingy acidity. These wines are really just fantastically fresh and delicious with sneaky complexity. (4719 views)
Tasted by Omar Khayyam on 4/12/2014 & rated 91 points: Nose is very tight, but on the palate this is extremely well made, elegant, silky, and with a fantastic freshness and purity. I think this is a keeper - should only improve over the next 10 yrs. (2766 views)
Tasted by Christoffer78 on 3/14/2014 flawed bottle: Very muted and restrained. Clear tones of smoky lava. Most likely 3-5 % corked which makes it impossible to write a proper Tasting Note. (2833 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 2/27/2014: This was really good, hit me just right. Tasted blind. Lighter ruby colored. Aromatics of florals, potpourri, fresh berry. Raspberry, dried flower, watermelon jolly rancher, strawberry--just a lot of fresh red fruits that come across in a balanced way. Dusty finish. Terrific. (1798 views)
Tasted by brigcampbell on 2/27/2014: G5 - Variety is the Spice of Life (Juliette): Blind. This sat out all day and was still very wrapped up. Color reminded me of a Pinot noir and the fruit was red. The wine is very coarse and significant complexity. Very interesting and I enjoyed it. Medium plus finish with the oak showing as light coffee. Advice, if drinking now then open the night before. No fear of this wine falling apart. (3244 views)
Tasted by MWiking on 10/23/2013 & rated 90 points: kokta grönsaker, paprika och salmiak på näsan,

sen stod det inget mer i mina notes men det var förvånande gott. (2053 views)
Tasted by Christoffer78 on 8/22/2013 & rated 93 points: The Guardiola is a wine I could probably write a book about. I will refrain from that tonight, but still - what a wine this is! The nose provides deep intense lava tones, red fruit, subtle cherry and red grapefruit adjoined by an elegant but very expressive palate. Acidity, fruit and tannins are in perfect harmony and sings the most beautiful song one could ever imagine. This wine is a super effort which boasts of tender love and care in the vineyard and winery. It is for sure elegant and actually measures up to high quality efforts from Burgundy. The Guardiola is a wine I could recommend to anyone in doubt of the quality level of Etna wines! This particular vintage will benefit from a few more years in the cellar, but if you do not mind a few hard edges it drinks perfectly today too - after some aeration. (2244 views)
Tasted by Christoffer78 on 8/9/2013 & rated 93 points: Do not be mistaken, this is not Grand Vin and it never will be. Yet, it is brilliantly mind boggling and one of the most complex and elegant wines available from Etna. The 2010 Guardiola is pure youth at present, still it exhibits the wonderful lava perfume adjoined by subtle morellos and subtle strawberry. The palate reveals velvety like tannins, which are more on the harsh side but still very soft. The acidity is perfect - as is the overall experience. This is a true beauty which will develop into a swan given some time. The wines from Tenuta delle Terre Nere keep impressing me over and over again. There is absolutely no doubt they are made with great love and a skillful hand. Bravo! (2660 views)
Tasted by Chaz Bham on 5/8/2013 & rated 90 points: Lovely aromatics of red fruit skins and blossoms. The fruit is denser than the entry level Etna Rosso, and there is some toasted oak. Nice complexity, and a reasonable value at $38, outshining quite a few $70 Burgundies I have tried lately. A few extra points on the score just for the aromatics alone. (2291 views)
Tasted by Eric on 3/3/2013 & rated 91 points: Holy moley, this is just great. Tart and leathery. It has the weight of a Pinot, but there is an acidic edge that leans to Italy and an earthy edge that hearkens to the Rhone. Yum! (3791 views)
Tasted by Christoffer78 on 2/23/2013 & rated 93 points: A wonderful expression of this super wine. The 010 Guardiola reveals an abundance of complexity despite being so young. The sandy lava like nose is surrounded by a thick velvety veil of mature red fruits. Adding to this is thyme and sage. The palate is perfectly balanced and will integrate with some more time in the cellar. Compared to the 09 Guardiola, the 010 reveals ample compared to somewhat restrained fruit. It is also a little bit more dense and compact. Still, this wine is a perfect acquaintance for any Pinot Noir lover. She or he would certainly be surprised. (2355 views)
Tasted by Christoffer78 on 1/23/2013 & rated 93 points: As always a brilliant wine which is certainly light on its feet but has an intrinsic depth and an amazing balance. The nose offers abundant minerals and subtle volcanic "ash" combined with red currant and smooth cherries. The palate is nicely balanced with close to no tannins but a better integration is yet to be revealed. My guess is a year or two in the cellar will help - and make the wine even more delicious than it is today. A master effort worth trying out! (2206 views)
Tasted by robw on 1/12/2013 & rated 94 points: This vintage carries much more fruit than the 09. Yet the deference to terroir is always there. Another brilliant Etna wine that will drink well for a decade. Kudos. (2177 views)
Tasted by spillwine on 12/8/2012 & rated 87 points: Nez interéssant, sinon rien de spécial (1778 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 10/20/2012 & rated 90 points: Retailer tasting: Complex bouquet with flowers, minerals, red fruits, green herbs and earthiness. On the palate a somewhat sweet start, a lot of ripe red fruit juice, sweet spices from the oak, some earthiness and minerals and drying tannin. Early drinking stage now, probably a bit better around 2015, but not for extreme long ageing. 90+ (1804 views)

Tenuta delle Terre Nere

Producer website

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

The two vineyards in Santo Spirito are the last ones we bought, the second property acquired in two steps. Santo Spirito is adjacent to Guardiola’s northern boundary and lower in altitude as its slopes descend towards the Alcantara valley. And though adjacent, it couldn’t be more different. An outstandingly beautiful location, gentle wide terraces flowing sweetly in striking contrast to steep, graggy Guardiola. Again, Santo Spirito’s soil is deep rich volcanic ash, its grass a lush emerald green, its vigorous vines displaying a well fed abundance. Santo Spirito’s wines are luscious and sensual, always seductive in their almost fleshy bouquet, and in their buttermilk richness. And yet there’s still a balance and a purity there, very sophisticated, yes, but tender as well. Generous and vulnerable at once.

The estate is located in the northern slopes of the volcano, with vineyards between the village of Solicchiata and the town of Randazzo, the area historically recognized as the finest in the appellation for fine red wines. The property consists of over 30 hectars, divided into 10 parcels in four crus, with a total vineyard surface of 23 hectars, which we mean to enlarge to 30-32 hectars. Except for 6 hectars recently planted, the rest are between 50 and 100 years old. One parcel, having survived phylloxera, has reached the venerable age of 130-140 years old. The soils differ very much from cru to cru, and even within the crus themselves. The same is true of the altitudes, our vineyards ranging between 600 and 1000 metres above sea level. In Santo Spirito we have two vineyards as well. Although adjacent to Guardiola, the soil is dramatically different: a rich deep volcanic ash so fine as to call to mind talcum powder, were it not jet black. Besides estate owned vineyards, Terre Nere has long term leases on 4 hectars and buys grapes from small local vignerons who follow our organic procedures. All our wines are produced from local varieties, and all are D.O.C. Etna.

Nerello Blend
