Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 5 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Bathtub58 on 10/27/2018: Sourced from a European cellar (659 views)
Tasted by NYC_Maenad on 1/24/2016: Sourced from the Graham Lyon's cellar, out of original case, so there's almost no better provenance. Opened to find typical cellar funk under the capsule. Cork intact. Decanted off sediment. The color is of sun-faded red velvet upholstery, clear and solid to the rim, with no bricking. The nose at first was of plum, a bit of cherry cola (but without the syrup that usually comes with that), mint and a trace of staleness and decay. The staleness quickly blew off, to be replaced with a true tertiary forest floor (no pine, though) and the same plum and Christmas cake. On the palate, it started off leaner and showing the same staleness, but quickly (30 min?) rounded out into an even, balanced, glorious mix of fruit and spice, with mint still slightly in evidence. Nothing roasted or obviously hot-vintage about it. At its peak, a serious smoky bacon character came forward and carried the richness through to the end of the bottle. At 14.6% alcohol, this was a monster for its time. What a treat now. (1896 views)
Tasted by tcarter on 11/6/2015 & rated 88 points: Ridge Wine Vertical Dinner (Los Angeles, CA): This one is done for. Maybe my bottle--which was intact and good provenance--was off, but this has kind of fallen apart over the years. (2084 views)
Tasted by mike l. on 9/18/2014 & rated 92 points: had in paso with friends. exceptional experience. still plenty of fruit and great integration. very fun. (2003 views)
Tasted by RogerG on 3/28/1981: Second of 2 zin's at this meal. Eventually too much, but very delicious. (783 views)

Ridge Zinfandel Paso Robles

(Spring 2012 Ridge Wine Club notes)

Benito Dusi Ranch. The 1967 vintage was our first wine from this vineyard. It is planted entirely to zinfandel, unusual in a vineyard more than 80 years old.

Purchased by Sylvester and Catarina Dusi in 1924, the property has been farmed since the 1940s by their son Benito, the owner.

Wines from this location consistently show deep, juicy bramble fruit on the palate, along with notes of black cherry, gravelly earth, and rich chocolate.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
