Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 87.4 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 83 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by RichardZula on 6/18/2022: Crisp fruit, pleasant, does not have the complexity of earlier vintages to me (756 views)
Tasted by RichardZula on 3/19/2022: Directly compared to '05, this was not as good, but enjoyable, no fruit notes as distinct and the older wine. (760 views)
Tasted by chatters on 5/27/2021: d'Arenberg with Chester Osborn (Strand Cellars, Croydon): Medium plus intensity aromas of plums, with a little sour red berry underpin, a touch of meatiness and leather, spiced; a little black pepper. medium plus intensity acidity, plentiful tannins are floury textured. Fruit more concentrated and a lick of alcohol heat on the back palate, a little spice here as well. Meh. (1356 views)
Tasted by OzDude on 12/26/2020 & rated 91 points: This is still a great wine. Still has time to go before it is past it’s peak. (1281 views)
Tasted by RichardZula on 3/20/2020: Blackraspberry, burnt rubber nose, blew off, medium fine tannins, decent wine but I had remembered a better wine. (1514 views)
Tasted by Quarked on 8/20/2019 & rated 86 points: Agree with MerryBerry's notes, except I found it too hot and unbalanced on first night. (1420 views)
Tasted by merryberry on 10/29/2018 & rated 87 points: Orange-burnished crimson. Crushed raspberry and cherry cola nose. Medium bodied, pepper, juicy chocolate cherries, sage, a few sweet tannins, and a medium to long sappy finish. Lots of fruit still there. (1700 views)
Tasted by shorty01 on 3/24/2018 & rated 87 points: Surprisingly good for this stage of life. Drink up. (2030 views)
Tasted by pkbowen on 12/12/2017 & rated 90 points: Very short decant from cellar temp. Under screwcap. Blackberry jam, blackberry leaf tea, and crème de cassis on the nose while cold. After opening up a bit more smokey/campfire, meaty, and black pepper aromas join the party. Lovely, complex, and showing plenty of tertiary complexity at this stage. This bottle seems to have been stored well as the fruit has outlasted much of the structure. Medium acid supports the aromas and flavors, but there is very little tannin left.

A pleasant wine that is probably creeping up to the end of peak drinking, judging by structure, although the screwcap may afford other bottles some longevity. "Very good-to-excellent," 90/100. (2132 views)
Tasted by innesa on 12/1/2017: End of a long evening drinking champagne but my recollection was of a lovely red fruit driven wine. (1949 views)
Tasted by Atwellian on 9/17/2017 & rated 81 points: Deep dark purple. Rich blackberry and cassis nose. Dry and dusty black fruit. Simple almost syrupy, initially almost cartoonish, a sweet, syrupy wine. After an hour or so, a bit of acidity starts to appear. (2201 views)
Tasted by Oroliba on 5/5/2017 & rated 89 points: Easy to drink with food. Not on its own. (2466 views)
Tasted by ratrop1 on 2/18/2017 & rated 89 points: Good wine at the price, drinking well now. Inky purple, garnet at the edge. Modest nose of alcohol, red fruit and pepper. Soft rich but simple fruit palate, almost a fruit bomb. But pretty good balance - rich sweet fruit dominates, but with decent (added?) acidity and a modest tannic finish. At its peak now. (2254 views)
Tasted by Minne Lusa on 2/12/2017 & rated 88 points: Floral nose with strawberry and a hint of watermelon. This wine is jammy, with a touch of peppery heat. Tart red berry flavors show over blueberry and creamy vanilla. Toasty oak notes show through in the chewy tannic finish. (2050 views)
Tasted by THF49 on 1/31/2017 & rated 84 points: I like Australian Shiraz and Grenache. This 50/50 blend is dry without any fruit forward and a disappointing finish. (2060 views)
Tasted by marcellevi on 12/1/2016 & rated 87 points: Very decent, good value. Tart raspberry, fruit-forward floral touch and light finish. (1864 views)
Tasted by stebockh on 7/16/2016: A little too sweet in the middle, not much complexity (1811 views)
Tasted by despore on 6/24/2016 & rated 89 points: Great QPR! (1594 views)
Tasted by khmark7 on 5/22/2016: Solid value red with good structure and balance. This bottle tastes as if it is fading just a little, so considering drinking up. (1748 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 5/14/2016 & rated 88 points: Still a fine, easy drinking wine. Is not that powerful anymore. Still fruit, getting more velvet, rounded. Medium finish (1685 views)
Tasted by mckillop on 5/11/2016 & rated 75 points: Light body. Smelled of Blue Cheese. Tasted like someone took wine and blended it with Blue Cheese. Odd mixture of flavours that where not well integrated at all. (1592 views)
Tasted by jerbearjb on 3/27/2016 & rated 84 points: Big wine with some heat on the finish. Fine with food. (1414 views)
Tasted by JimmyHaulinHogs on 2/19/2016 & rated 86 points: Super velvety soft and soothing on the palate despite the upfront liberal dose of acidity, it has a widespread array of good, cohesive mild fruity flavours to go with a beautiful light spiciness and a tannin level that borders on being just a bit excessive, but still very good. While thankfully not too sour or tart, it's notably on the acidic side which may be good for food pairing and less so for sipping. Overall, it doesn't have the appeal I expect from something that looks this good on paper, mainly due to the absence of something approaching a delicious sensation in the flavour, which is somewhat due to the disjointed acidic component. Perhaps in the future I'll have an application for something like this if I discover a good food pairing, but for now I have no plans to buy it again. (1719 views)
Tasted by STM82 on 2/1/2016 & rated 88 points: Bright red fruit with some earthy notes, salinity, soy sauce, and decent depth. Solid wine. Great qpr for 10 bucks a pop. (1584 views)
Tasted by urban_dk on 2/1/2016 & rated 90 points: Big, bright fruit. Not jammy, more macerated dark berries with some earthy tannins on the finish. Much better on the second night than the first. Thanks to K&L's $10 deal, I'll have a few more to enjoy over this year! (1617 views)

One of the most significant wineries in McLaren Vale founded in 1912. The winemaking processes of the past have been maintained, capturing the unique small-batch character of the wines and the true flavour of the McLaren Vale region. All grapes, red and white, are basket-pressed. The reds are still traditionally fermented with the grape skins (caps) submerged in open wax-lined concrete fermenters utilising the age-old technique of foot-treading.

Winemaking duties are carried out by fourth-generation Chester d’Arenberg Osborn. In June 2004 Chester’s father, d’Arry was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his contributions to the wine industry and to the McLaren Vale region. After more than 65 consecutive vintages d’Arry is very proud of his achievements in creating an internationally recognised wine brand commonly known as the ‘Red Stripe’ due to the distinctive diagonal red stripe that adorns the label. d’Arenberg’s art of being different extends to a range of fortified and dessert wines, which have legendary status worldwide.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
