Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 138 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Will Devize on 4/28/2023 & rated 94 points: The last and arguably best bottle from the case. This is light and nimble with delicate sweet red fruits over notes of pastrami and lavender. Beautifully balanced and still somewhere near its peak. A charming and ethereal delight (1170 views)
Tasted by JJKinch on 11/27/2022 & rated 92 points: Dark fruit (black cherry, blueberry), nice spice, dried herbs, garrigue, slight leather, slight olive, earth, good acidity. Some tannins. Lingering finish. Really enjoyable. (1298 views)
Tasted by AccaDacca on 7/30/2021 & rated 90 points: Enjoyable, but growing a little tired. (3356 views)
Tasted by jono9999 on 3/27/2021 & rated 91 points: Still lively. A little sweet — raisiny (3522 views)
Tasted by rayq on 1/2/2021 & rated 90 points: This was very closed initially, the nose was there but very closed on the palate (it was cellar cool) It filled out with air. There was a surprisingly dry and sharp finish, something I'd expect in a much younger wine. (though looking over previous notes not entirely unexpected!) A pleasant but not exceptional wine. I woul be inclined to drink up. (3765 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 12/20/2020 & rated 91 points: A lovely bottle of this. Garrigue and leather, sweet fruited and nicely mellow. Mature but vital. Fills and puts on weight between lunch and supper. Holding well. Very smooth. Managed to confine the sediment to the very bottom of the bottle. **** (3340 views)
Tasted by glou.sf on 12/14/2020 & rated 88 points: Tasted blind. Fragrant nose, but hard to get passed the canned pineapple flavors. Still quite tannic and good acidity, but little fruit. I didn't care for this. (2977 views)
 Tasted by jono9999 on 6/20/2020 & rated 95 points: Smooth! (2012 views)
Tasted by redders on 5/15/2020 & rated 92 points: Lovely bottle perfectly mature but still vigorous. Well melded damson fruit on nose with garrigue. Well balanced with clean earthy fruit and very long lifted finish. Went perfectly with duck breast celeriac mash and hot cherry and port sauce. (1862 views)
Tasted by redders on 3/28/2020 & rated 92 points: Just delicious. Perfect fill. Classic mature VT nose , elegant lifted and harmonious. Fresh ,secondary but no tertiary notes. Intense but balanced fruit plenty of energy . Really enjoyable with some good sausages. (1769 views)
Tasted by Shrewsram on 2/5/2020: Not sure how to score this... assessed after return from customer:

Cloudy, tawny appearance with a surprisingly deep, near opaque garnet core.

Old books, maybe a touch of cardboard on the nose, black olive, a whiff of cherry liqueur. Something varnishy, and a touch of toast/brett – farmhouse cider (VA?), more cherry, damp earth and decaying leaf matter, liquorice. Still some raspberry here, and a cool coal-like black frame. I quite enjoyed the nose, and lots still here.

In the mouth: speckled (note the 'cloudy' appearance), good acidity and resolved tannins, something stimulating.
Creamy flavours of liquorice and olive, and black fruit paste, dried fruits.
Sort of lean, and tangy, with a savoury dry finish – it is on it’s way and feels increasingly lighter.
Fading cherry liqueur – like an old bottle, with some apple skin astringency, a touch of toast and delicate notes of farmhouse cider.

Not terribly long.

Might be better bottles, and this has been open a day (or so). Not faulty, but showing its age. At a bargain price it would be interesting. (1923 views)
Tasted by townjbc on 5/4/2019 & rated 92 points: Lovely flawless wine, great fruit and nose. Excellent. Probably at its peak. (2491 views)
Tasted by MikeATL on 2/23/2019 & rated 91 points: Showing its age in a graceful way, with bright red fruit wrapped in leather, earth, and a touch of flowers. I liked it more than others who prefer younger wines. (2422 views)
Tasted by redders on 2/23/2019 & rated 92 points: Colour still some purple. Damson leather spice and slate on nose. Deep fruit plenty of structure, tannins evident on finish. Great with super slow cooked beef casserole (2177 views)
Tasted by Captain Haddock on 1/12/2019 & rated 92 points: This is well into its drinking window and had plenty to give. Decanted for 2 hours, it held up well in the glass and had a nose of dried herbs and pepper with a lovely hint of brett, and sweet fruit with a tangy, peppery note on the palate, and a hint of tannin on the finish. Not improving but should be enjoyable for a few more years. (2222 views)
Tasted by flah00 on 9/16/2018 & rated 89 points: Initially blood and mold in the nose. Still holds strong tannins.
Recorked and let it sit for a day.
Upon returning, beautiful brick red. Gasoline, garrigue, some red fruit on the nose. Hints of earth and chocolate on the palette. The tannins are soft and enveloping.
The finish is somewhat simple, but pleasant echoes of everything I mentioned. (2450 views)
Tasted by redders on 8/19/2018 & rated 92 points: Pale colour but bright. Mature complex garrigue nose. Lot of herb. Lovely to drink. Elegant balanced great depth and long finish. V good (2209 views)
Tasted by bacchus of knockholt on 3/11/2018 & rated 92 points: Medium ruby core with a pronounced bricking to the edge. Fantastic aromas of red fruits, cherry, raspberry, redcurrant, lots of perfume, cedar, garrigue; complex. This wine tastes elegant on entry with enticing red fruit and those garrigue fragrances but there's that power in the mid palate which you expect to get from a CNDP which gives an complex, long finish. An "iron fist in a velvet glove" springs to mind. A wonderful wine which still has lots of fruit but not sure what life it has left in it. (2758 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 1/27/2018: This was excellent after a disappointing '99 recently; the cork had a perfect seal and this showed younger than anticipated with ripe dark fruits, saddle leather, garrigue, floral notes, and a hint of tobacco. The palate is beautifully balanced and delicious with still ripe and tasty fruit and very nice balance. Delicious. (2796 views)
Tasted by rm97 on 1/1/2018 & rated 92 points: Delicious. Classic old CDP. No rush. (2752 views)
Tasted by flah00 on 6/2/2017 & rated 89 points: Initially smoked wood nose, moving into menthol and gasoline. Surprisingly present tannins. Lasting finish of earth and spice.

Tried half of the bottle at ambient temperature Decanted for an hour or two. The other half Decanted, but corked and kept at 58f. Perhaps the alcohol was more pronounced at ambient temperature... But largely indistinguishable. (2379 views)
Tasted by pepmi on 5/5/2017 & rated 95 points: I've scored the last three tastings of the '94 Vieux Telegraphe with 94-95 points. One could argue that I am guilty of grade inflation but opening another bottle this evening only reinforces the outstanding calibre of this particular wine and vintage.

Deep blackberry, cassis and as much tobacco as my last tasting three years ago. Full, balanced and voluptuous in the mouth. Forward esters and a finish that displays spice, black pepper and a bit of alcoholic heat -- which I hadn't noticed in prior tastings. This tasting suggests another decade of peak drinking experience. If you have more than one bottle in your cellar, don't wait to open at least one now. (3980 views)
Tasted by Taronti on 4/29/2017 & rated 92 points: Very little sediment, cork in excellent condition. Nose of roasted meat and Indian spice. Very clean with amazing fruit for its age. Civilized finish. Seems at its peak.Would pop & pour. (1645 views)
Tasted by le fouloir on 2/25/2017 & rated 92 points: Classic aged CdP. It was still in its prime. I did not decant it but don't feel like doing so would have improved it much. It opened up instantly and thankfully did not drop off during the meal. Bravo. (3166 views)
Tasted by Kopstal on 12/25/2016 & rated 91 points: Drank 1994, 1996 and 1999 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe with filet de chevreuil aux mûres during Christmas dinner.
All three wines were still very good. The 1994 was most impressive, certainly in the first hour after opening the bottles. Also colourise, it seemed younger than the 1996. The 1999 and to a lesser extent the 1996 needed time to open up. All three still powerful aromas and medium to full bodied. (3473 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
