Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 96.4 pts. and median of 97 pts. in 21 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Lollipop on 3/17/2024 & rated 97 points: Decanted and drunk side by side with the Rostaing La Landonne from the same year. Two great representations of Cote Rotie but the Guigal slightly edged it for me. The oak is always there but its so well integrated and the nose always blows me away. How can a wine smell lke that? So good. Dark, brooding and dense of course but somehow not heavy. Loved it. Will happily last about 20+ years. (557 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 9/18/2023 & rated 98 points: Six Singing Bottles (Our Los Olivos Home): Staggeringly good (my friends think my score is miserly). Only given a 2-hour slow-ox, and may not have needed that. This bottle had it all: elegant, pretty and pure, with tremendous energy, too. A wine that demands your attention, loaded with lavender, licorice and roasted herbal notes. One taster was moved to veritable poetry: "a trifecta of aroma, taste and emotion seamlessly intertwined." There was great length to the edgeless finish. (2030 views)
Tasted by bbq_grandcru on 8/26/2023 & rated 91 points: Full body. 3 hour decant. Big and brooding, nose and palate of dark fruit, meat and smoke. Tight into the finish. This needs a good five more years to integrate but it’s enjoyable today. (1593 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 6/28/2023 & rated 96 points: Aromas are intense floral and berry. The palate is lifted and complex, with blackberry, violets, smoke, and minerals….it leans a bit more savory than rich and will be interesting to see how this evolves over time. it’s quite good already (2006 views)
Tasted by d'Artagnan on 1/26/2023 & rated 98 points: Dégustation Côte Blonde (La Caverne de Collin): Un nez suave et délicat mais peu expressif, c'est un coulis de petits fruits, avec un peu de caramel. La bouche…..Stop the press!!! Wow! Spectaculaire. 98+ pts (2753 views)
Tasted by Lord of the Bottles on 10/2/2022 & rated 96 points: Complete nose of intense red and black fruit and smoke. White pepper and black pepper, too. High tension on the palate of deep red fruit that attacks in waves for about 15 seconds. Very powerful and tannic but already in balance. I can see why the critics rate this 100, but, for now, 96+ with many years needed. (2791 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 2/24/2021 & rated 100 points: Mini horizontal of the three 2010 Cote Rotie stars. All wines tasted double blind. A strong reminder how great Cote Rotie can be. The wines are so incredibly elegant, airy and pure. No weight, yet intense and with very complex aroma profiles. The winner was the Guigal La Mouline (100 pts), one of these rare perfect experiences. The perfect, fine structure paired with an ever changing aroma profile and this rare balance of sweet and sexy with absolute grace and intellectual stimulus. Second place for Jamet (96+ pts) which was almost perfect in its best moments but with a bit more time the fruit retracted a bit and more vegetable aromas took over making it a bit less harmonious. Rostaing Cote Blonde (92 pts) not on par with the others. Jumped back and forth from being fresh and balanced to being a bit green and bitter, but never with the same level of complexity.

TN: Right from the start it jumps out of the glass with various shades of minerality, smoke, saltiness, bacon fat/meaty notes, black olives, green olives, fresh herbs, floral notes and an intense dark fruit core. Expressive and layered, intense and masterly precise on the nose and palate. After two/three more hours in the decanter and glass suddenly cola notes like in Burgundy Pinots and especially a burnt sugar notes reminiscent of a Mouton Rothschild add further to the complexity. So complex and ever changing. All embedded in the most perfect structure with ultra-fine tannins, a high and perfectly integrated acidity with an absolut weightless and airy feel yet the right amount of sexy creaminess. The finish is long, multi-layered and expanding. Wow, this is an amazing wine! Right out of the gate I scored this 97-98 pts and the score kept creeping higher the longer we followed the wine until it reached perfection.

Decanting: Decanted for roughly 90+ mins before the first pour. Great from the start it improved further with more time. If you don’t follow it over hours, decant it for at least 4-5 hours at this stage.

Glass: Zalto Bordeaux (6388 views)
Tasted by sirpat00 on 2/20/2021 & rated 100 points: Decanted 90mins prior to consumption. High intensity stuff with tons of smoked meat and bacon, dark and red berries and smoke. More primary fruit pushing through after a while providing for a juicy feel, just a whiff of leather, mineral notes of ash, char coal and smoke. After an hour or so also coffee and a tiny bit of baking spices. Amazingly complex and refined nose, portraying gravitas and majestic composure. This is incredibly structured and layered, ultra-precise and textured to the core with a whole universe of aromas including almost Pinot-like sour cherry on the palate. Heart-stopping how the acidity builds up through mid-palate and culminates in an explosive finish –and all of this with an amazing lightness to it. (4346 views)
Tasted by drjb on 10/20/2020 & rated 96 points: A first look at the 2010 LaLas confirms that there should be no haste in opening further bottles. The colour is a deep and dark cherry with a lovely nose of dark raspberry, blackberries, cassis, lavender and a touch of sizzling bacon. The palate remains quite tight and mouth filling with a quite lovely range of flavours leading into an intense finish of fine tannins and well handled oak. A delicious drink yet all too early in its evolution to do it full justice. (3961 views)
Tasted by Butty on 1/12/2020 & rated 100 points: A great wine - a perfect blend of sweet and sour, going from roasted pineapple (yes) through to mint, soi sauce, bacon, spices and with a big backdrop of violets, cherries and red/black fruits. Silky smooth, elegant and balanced on the palate with a lovely weight and mouthfeel. The real deal - amazing - this is why I love wine (4392 views)
Tasted by SlimShaney on 10/26/2018 & rated 87 points: Could try to appreciate why it's amazing but if I closed my eyes and you served it to me if say it's a weird concave mushroom infested landscape. (5273 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 7/2/2017 & rated 100 points: Powerful, thick, dense, rich, bright and concentrated with layer after layer of fruit, there is no denying the level of quality found here. But I have admit, my friends were right, there is no reason to open this for at least another decade! It is far too primary to really enjoy at the table today. (8762 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 1/14/2017 & rated 100 points: Fat, rich, dense, concentrated, full bodied, deep and dark, but with the perfect amount of freshness to give it lift, aromatics to provide the entry and character, and an incredible, opulent, if not decadent, perfectly ripe, fruit filled finish that lasts at least 60 seconds. A sacrifice in the name of science, and well worth it, I might add. (9134 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 10/20/2016 & rated 97 points: Phantastic dense and elegant likewise, white pepper and cassis!, dark berries and a mighty fine grained tannin structure, salty, a nice baby for the next 3-4 decades, 97+ (6708 views)
Tasted by reaston on 2/15/2016: great (7178 views)
Tasted by steinersing on 12/13/2015 & rated 95 points: No doubt this had a lot in store, currently tight and fruit in the background, as a result alcohol shows too much now (6312 views)
Wow!! 97-99 (+?) pts (7260 views)
Tasted by -E- on 8/30/2014 & rated 96 points: Klar, dyp rød med hint av blått.
Frisk, saftig syre. Tørr utgang med milde, tørre tanniner. Sitter uendelig lengde i. Sømløs feminin eleganse. La ligge. (4628 views)
Tasted by chatters on 4/1/2014: Working with wine 2014 seminar 1 - Rhone varieties (Sofitel, Sydney): Medium minus aromas of cream, toast, vanilla, meaty elements, green peppercorns and red berry fruit touches of spice here as well. On the palate the wine is juicy and spicy with flavours of red berries tending to currants. Fine bodied tannin and slight alcohol warmth join the fruit and the whole lot just carries, as a constant, for ages. Not particularly large bodied - no massive weight or big cornucopian fruit explosion here - but beautifully balanced. Burgundyesque to coin a word. elegance personified. Very good indeed. A FAMILY HISTORY
Land with 24 centuries of history behind it, worked and preserved by three generations of winemakers with family values at their core and a commitment to an illustrious terrain that produces prestigious wines. This, in a nutshell, is the Maison Guigal. Right from the beginning the motto, “No Pains No Gains” underpins the promise made to Etienne Guigal. A commitment to work together to follow in his footsteps, to communicate the family’s passion and create so many emotions. Today, Marcel and Philippe, along with their wives, are the guardians of this exceptional domain which combines history, devotion and a sense of togetherness. A breath of inspiration for generations to come.

CÔTE-RÔTIE
1
Planted on slopes by the Romans 24 centuries ago, this illustrious vineyard is made up of the Côte Brune, upstream of the Reynard and the Côte Blonde which is downstream. Planted almost exclusively with Syrah, the Côte Brune produces a powerful, intense wine. Thanks to a dash of Viognier which compliments the Syrah, the Côte Blonde is more subtle. There is a charming legend attached to this appellation and the Château d’Ampuis: “the sire of this place had two daughters, one with hair as dark as the night and the other blonde like a field of wheat. When they got married he endowed each with two of his best slopes. This is how we inherited the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde”

CONDRIEU
2
With its steep terraces which plunge towards the Rhône, this vineyard is planted solely with Viognier. A rare grape varietal imported by the Greeks at the beginning of our era, combined with granite soils its naturally complex character produces a unique white wine with a yellow golden hue and intense and subtle notes of delicate apricot and white peach.

SAINT-JOSEPH
3
Enjoyed at the table of kings, this illustrious wine’s name hails back to the 16th Century and the Jesuit monks of Tournon. The reds are made from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. These grape varieties grown on a South to South East facing steeply sloped vineyard with granite soils produce elegant, luscious wines.

HERMITAGE
4
A prestigious appellation since ancient times, it is named after a 13th Century hermit who sought redemption by devoting himself to prayer and the cultivation of vines. Enjoyed by the Russian Court and the great and the good of Europe, this rich and powerful wine with intense aromas is produced from Syrah for the reds and Marsanne and Roussanne for the whites.

CROZES-HERMITAGE
5
A typical wine of the northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage benefits from warm pebbly soils with good drainage. This is a vast appellation partially planted on slopes. The reds are produced from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. The red wine is deep ruby in colour, full of savoury flavour and well-balanced. The white wines are dry and aromatic with floral notes.

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
6
These soils are composed of calcareous round pebbles and the vineyards are swept by the Mistral winds and warmed by the Provencal sunshine, resulting in wines with unmistakable flavours of the South. These southern wines are produced from a complex blend of the 13 grape varieties of the appellation with Grenache as the main component. They are complex with soft and powerful tannins and are characterised by a generous and strong personality.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

• The Appellation cover three communes - Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône, Ampuis and Tupin-Semons - on the right Rhône river bank, within the Rhône "département".

• Soils : In the northern part of the vineyard, the Côte Brune, consists of extremely steep, terraced slopes of ferruginous mica schists which are covered with schist sand (arzel). The Côte Blonde has a varied geology with gneiss and granite predominating at the most southern side of the appellation.

• Climate : tempered continental. Dry, hot summers and frequent rainfalls during the other seasons. History : one of the oldest vineyards in France, first developed by the Romans. It is said that during the Middle Ages, "The Seigneur de Maugiron" bequeathed a hillside to each of his daughters, one was brunette and the other fair. Thus, were born the names of "Côte Brune" and "Côte Blonde".

• Area planted : 230 hectares (568 acres), for an annual production of 8,400 hectoliters (93,333 cases). Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2,3 US tons/acre).

• Grape Varieties : Syrah (80% minimum). An addition of up to 20% of Viognier grapes in the crop is allowed.
