Die Nase ist ein kleines Spektakel, sie besticht nicht mit expressiver Frucht, sondern mit einer wunderbar kühlen Mineralität, die fruchtigen Noten halten sich subtil im Hintergrund, zitrische Noten, Mandarinen, Zesten, florale Töne, ein Gedicht. Im Gaumen gradlinig, klar und rein wie ein Bergbach, sensationelle Balance, das ist ungemein finessenreich und präzis, alles sitzt hier an seinem Platz. Grosse Länge, viel Frische. Ein ausgezeichneter Riesling mit grossen Reserven. (535 views)

This was very generously shared by our host that evening, and it was a wonderful CSH. Very fresh but aromatically expressive with lots of fruit, complimented by precise acidity that cut through everything. Great texture on the palate.

This echoes my experiences with the better German GGs (Keller, etc.) that the 2011s are in their prime at the moment. Give it some air and make sure it's at the right temperature and boy you're in for a treat.

 Tasted by NoahCap on 3/12/2022: My first Clos Ste Hune. My expectations were through the roof. I worried that I was opening it too early at 11 yrs old, but I’m glad I didn’t wait any longer. The bottle isn’t premoxed, but it’s more advanced than it should be. Bottle looked good, but removing the capsule revealed a cork that was sunk 2mm below the rim. I tasted a small bit PnP and the rest of it went into the decanter which we drank slowly over 5 hrs. Some weird funky notes upon opening, which went away after some air.

Aroma is mostly pleasant, but it’s not at the intensity that a top quality Riesling should be- I’d say medium minus. Notes are of a wine that is advancing in years: stewed pears, apple sauce, wilted wildflowers, honey, lemon meringue pie, chamomile tea, and jasmine. Not a hint of petrol. The smells are pleasant but, again, intensity is lacking, and too advanced for a wine with a reputation of being able to age forever.

Pleasant in the mouth, but lacking the high acidity it should have. Even a touch flabby. The texture is soft, smooth, very easy drinking. Tastes of poached pears, pineapple rings out of the can, chamomile and jasmine (again). There is a hint of Juicy Fruit gum note that feels out of place. Finish is reasonably long, emphasizes the fruit.

I haven’t had this wine before, but I’ve had Cuvee Frederic Emile on multiple occasions, as well as other high quality Alsatian Rieslings. This wine is pleasant enough to drink, but no way this is what it’s supposed to be. Strangely, it’s missing the je ne sais quoi typicity of Riesling. Here I am, drinking what is supposed to be one of the top expressions of Riesling in the world, and I’m not sure I could have even identified the grape if blinded. Fun to try, but given the price, a bit fat disappointment.

I've had the bottle for 3 years, stored perfectly. I suspect damage in transit. (2046 views)

 Tasted by streethawk on 1/22/2022: Medium gold. Quite viscous. Enchanting nose of blossom, lime zest, peach, apple, with light TDN/petrol. Weighty mouthfeel but has enough acidity to dance across the palate. The fruit is very ripe though I do not detect much residual sugar. Impressive persistence and complexity. This is a gorgeous wine that has improved compared to the last bottle I had in 2017. Drink now and over the next 10-15 years. Outstanding. (2019 views)

Taste: The feel is Full bodied with razor-sharp, high acidity. The acidity cuts beautifully and with intent, but it doesn’t overwhelm. The feel has so much texture and balance with apples, pears, meyer lemons, warm oils, crushed rocks, saline, chamomile, and jasmine.

Overall: This is entering its zone and it’s flat out gorgeous. There is plenty of time left as it’s really entering an upslope, but it was signing after seeing a few hours in the decanter and air at dinner. (2351 views)

Bottle double decanted about 7h before the tasting. Bought at release, perfectly stored.
Clear, pale golden color. Nose driven by lots of stony mineral and some petrol. Very dense. On the palate very precise and quite lean. Wonderful acidity. Salty, some caraway seeds, ripe fruit. Great tension and extract. This is a sleeping monster at its very early stage and made for the very long run. Keep it for at least another decade. 93-94++ (2637 views)

 Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 4/4/2021 & rated 92 points: Single bottle from a large mixed lot purchased at auction in London in 2020. Clos Ste. Hune is a 1.67 hectare monopole in the Grand Cru Rosacker in Hunawihr, which yields approximately 8,000 bottles per year. Fermented and aged in 100% stainless steel, non-malo, residual sugar 6.6 gr/l, 14% ABV. Like in Germany, 2011 was a warm year in Alsace, and it shows on the mature nose, which is quite petrolly and does not have a lot of definition, but there is some refreshing citrus fruit next to the smoke and earth. The palate is quite full and displays lots of extract, but its stony character is much more driven by the soil (ceratite-limestone, what the Germans call "Muschelkalk") than by the fruit. The finish has lots of tight, zesty, acidity but also noticeable back-end heat. I rarely drink Clos Ste. Hune and I am glad that I got this bottle for a bargain-basement price, because I would be wary of paying the normal price of admission (currently € 150 - €170 per bottle). Primary green apples, petrol and intense minerals. Medium bodied with very sharp acidity. Rather lean and doesn’t have the intensity compared to the stunning 2009 Keller Abts Erde.  Tasted by Aravind Asok on 9/28/2019: Just stunning. Based on some previous comments about low acidity, we chose a food pairing accordingly. On the nose, peach, orchard fruits, a suggestion of petrol, blending into honey. On the palate, quite rich for a riesling, and I could see why some ppl found this low acid, but I think the acidity keeps the soft sweetness in check. Long finish, lovely mouthfeel. Tasted next to an 09 Donhoff Dellchen GG, which made the slight off-dry character of this wine apparent, but also had a 76 Licht-Bergweiler Spat nearby, so it was clear the sweetness was much more restrained.  Tasted by rikipedia on 10/8/2018 & rated 87 points: Terroir-istes International - France, Alsace Riesling Grand Cru (Cape Town Law offices): (Tasted Blind): Mid- yellow in colour. Lifted, lemon cleaner note with a dry dishcloth, fresh linen quality. Certainly floral there is chamomile, mineral and lemons that slowly emerge.
The palate is all floral intensity offering decent fruit concentration, with a bit of that lemon cleaner note coming through. Tight with razor-sharp acidity, dry as a bone that suggests it will ease with some time in bottle. It has a rather abrupt finish that detracts but again, time may heal.
A wine known for its dry profile and mineral saline austerity. Vineyards 50-70 yrs old." (350 views)

There's a slight bit of sweetness (more so than I remember than the last time I had it), but it doesn't seem to add to the weight of this wine. Despite the power and expressiveness here, there is incredible cut and precision here. It's linear and focussed, like one of those green lasers. It's clear, having this next to so many other Trimbach on the table, why this is the pinnacle of their stable. (4142 views)

Multi-layered nose of pear, white nectarine, shot through with minerality, and a tinge of kerosene, pure. Mid-bodied, pure pear and white nectarine on the palate, balanced acidity, slightly slick texture, great length.

Tried the 2012 at the Trimbach cellar door after (a somewhat rushed and generic affair), and the 2012’s acidity is a lot more pronounced in comparison, and is a lot more foursquare. The 2011 (I believe of a warmer vintage) will be ready earlier. (2950 views)

Clos Ste. Hune

A note on the Terroir by James E. Wilson (1998, University of California Press, Berkeley). You may want to consult pp 94-100 for color figures making the geology easier to comprehend. A copy of this seminal book should be part of every serious wine amateur's library!

...The Upper and Middle Triassic strata contain dolomites [magnesium-calcium phosphates] interbedded anhydrite [anhydrous calcium sulfate] and gypsiferous clays [derived from calcium sulfate]. [comment -- soils derived from these minerals would be expected to have an acidic reaction]; the hard dolomites would help form the low hills of this terrain; They also contribute to the pebbly texture of the soil. The Lower Triassic is made up of sandstones and shales, with conglomerates and overall stratigraphic sequences, few classic caprock and slope landforms develop; rather the typical features are low, rounded hills. In addition to the alluvial fans, there are some Quaternary sheet washes of pebbles and sands from the Vosges mixed with the calcareous sandy/clay soils. ....the Ribeauville Fault Bundle opens up southward at St.-Hippolyte and continues [southward] to the Fecht fan delta at Colmar. The area contains a large numbe--more than a third--of the Grands Crus of Alsace. The detail of the geologic map [..... brings] out the patchwork nature of the faulting.


The cross-section of the sub-Vosgian Hills illustrates how the step faulting lowers successvely younger strata into place toward the Rhine fault. The fault blocks are between 100 and 150 acres (40-60 ha) in size. Coming through [like a] vivid patchwork, the dominant [.....] Triassic, [...] Jurassic, and [ ...] Oligocene [demonstrate] the sequence of the step-faulting.


Beginning with the tiny Kanzlerberg terroir at Bergheim, six Grands Crus are located in the [...] Triassic zone: Osterberg, Kirchberg, Geisberg, Rosacker, and Schoenenbourg, Clos-Ste.-Hune, andthough not a Grand Cru, is also on Triassic soils. [note--while Trimbach's Clos Ste.-Hune is not an AOC Alsace Grand Cru, there is little doubt that this wine could be so labelled if the Trinbachs chose to participate in the Grand Cru scheme.]jht

The Trimbach family’s tiny 3-acre Clos Ste. Hune .......... The Clos lies within the Rosacker grand cru. Yet, the Trimbachs label [the wines{ simply as Clos Ste. Hune, just as they have since 1919. They refer to neither Rosacker nor grand cru [..].

A Unique Terroir. Arguably the most perfect place in France to grow Riesling, Clos Ste. Hune stands apart from Alsace’s other top Riesling vineyards, which rely on steep slopes and heat-retaining granite or schist soil to bring their fruit to full ripeness. In contrast, Clos Ste. Hune’s 40-year-old vines are planted in cool, calcareous- clay soil with a gentle incline and a high percentage of limestone.

So, while other famous Alsace Rieslings can sometimes border on heaviness, Clos Ste. Hune balances its enveloping richness with an intense minerality, remarkable finesse and great structure. Thus, like a Raveneau grand cru Chablis, the more it ages, the more profound Clos Ste. Hune becomes.

One Master. Clos Ste. Hune has for more than two centuries [been made by] one of France’s greatest winemaking families. Staunch traditionalists, the Trimbachs reject their neighbors’ recent efforts to make sweeter, lusher wines. They continue to make Clos Ste. Hune as they did in the past: a cool, slow fermentation, a quick racking to remove the wine from the lees, no malolactic fermentation and a short period of aging in neutral wood foudre before bottling early to retain the fruit. The wine is then aged for an incredible five years in bottle before being released.

In [extremely exceptional] years, tiny amounts of Vendange Tardive are made, but they are different from other VT’s. They result not from botrytis but passerillage—dehydration caused by the sap returning to the vine's root system. They boast immense concentration and complexity, but only off-dry levels of residual sugar, as Trimbach vinifies them to be as dry as possible. Like other Clos Ste. Hunes, the VT’s are capable of immortality.

Unrivalled Consistency. But what makes Clos Ste. Hune most extraordinary is its consistency, having established a record of greatness over the last 86 years that is unequaled in Alsace. As Tom Stevenson writes in The Wines of Alsace, "I cannot think of any Alsace Riesling that could match its performance year-in, year-out over a span of, say, 40 vintages. It is the consistency of performance that establishes the greatness of a growth."

Even in average years like 1986, Clos Ste. Hune is stunningly aromatic, complex and capable of long development. Such a track record shows the advantage of this vineyard as a Trimbach monopole..... With only 500 to 600 cases made, and demand far exceeding supply, even current vintages of Clos Ste. Hune can be excruciatingly difficult to find. As for older vintages, these can be impossible [to find].
