Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 76 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by stconner on 1/15/2015 & rated 93 points: though overall rating is a 93, for a Zin this would be closer to a 95. Very dark purple in color. This is a big zin and can use a little time decanting if possible. It has plenty of fruit and nice long finish for a zin. (676 views)
Tasted by domestic_primate on 12/1/2014 & rated 90 points: Exactly what I'm looking for in a Zin; big, teeth staining, borderline jammy but still with enough structure and polish to keep it interesting. (900 views)
Tasted by MPAN on 10/28/2014 & rated 87 points: Dark red; rich slightly subdued nose of dark berries; tannic and acidic expression, powerful; a bit "too much" and appearing somewhat unbalanced (1059 views)
Tasted by mn47 on 6/29/2014 & rated 95 points: Un grand vin à prix abordable. (1701 views)
Tasted by Twinkles on 12/15/2013 & rated 87 points: Hot zin that turns out to be a bit muted. Alcohol content really overpowered no matter how much I cooled it down. Remained hot on the second day but with stronger notes of plum. (3215 views)
Tasted by Dave75 on 11/23/2013 & rated 91 points: This wine is the definition of two things: smooth, and fruit forward. One of the best zins I've had in a while. Soft tannins. Berries on the nose. On the palate, strong hints of black cherry and licorice. Long, peppery finish that contrasts nicely with the overall smoothness. I would highly recommend. Wish I had a few more bottles of this.  Tasted by cucycling on 11/21/2013 & rated 91 points: so rich and wonderful, a little sweet almost like a soft port. (Without the heat) (2540 views)
Tasted by Helen & Klaus on 11/16/2013: It has a very smooth and delightful taste. It pared well with roast beef.
Very enjoyable. (2534 views)
Tasted by Philipross1 on 11/7/2013 & rated 94 points: Very Smooth, fruit forward with very soft tannins. I loved this wine, it was the bomb!
The wine looks Crimson colored. The legs are Slow. It smells like Raspberry, and Blackberry. It tastes like Coffee, and Blackberry. The body is Medium. The wine has Smooth texture. The wine finishes Medium. (2173 views)
Tasted by MPAN on 11/1/2013 & rated 91 points: Dark black red; somewhat muted nose, fruity; soft, round, lots of chocolate, well balanced; pleasant and inviting (1218 views)
Tasted by KVM on 10/7/2013 & rated 86 points: Inky. Dark fruit nose and vanilla. In the mouth it is the same, with juicy acid. Very concentrated , monolithic and boring. But not easily distiguishable as zinfandel, as the grape is dominated by the Caymus style. I do not care for this. (1268 views)
Tasted by K&J on 9/8/2013 & rated 92 points: This is a dark, rich, jammy Zinfandel. It has lots of nuances and medium acid, medium plus tannins. (1432 views)
Tasted by Ecbatana on 9/4/2013 & rated 94 points: An outstanding bottle of Zinfandel. Have always loved Caymus for their Cabernet Sauvignon and Special Selection. Never had opportunity to try their Zin before now due to the fact that it can only be purchased at the winery. This is a sub-$40 bottle when buying a case. A little spiciness, with sweet cherry and raspberry. Thick and velvety palate feel. Hits its stride 45+ min after opening. (1396 views)
Tasted by RobbieC on 8/15/2013 & rated 90 points: Three hour decant. Consistent with previous notes. Dark fruit flavors. Very dark color for a Zin; looks like a Cab. Still dry and oak showing a bit more today than I remember. (1432 views)
Tasted by bebackin15 on 8/11/2013 & rated 91 points: Picked up from the winery in July. Very mellow for a zin; expected more from Caymus on this one. Still enjoyed and drinking well now. (1367 views)
Tasted by Yaco3 on 7/3/2013 & rated 95 points: Big bold Zin. This is by far my favorite wine. (526 views)
Tasted by RobbieC on 4/18/2013 & rated 89 points: Nose is very subtle with only general "wine smell" and achohol. Very dark in color, looks like a cab. Simple and fruity. Thick. No sophistication at all. Tastes of dark fruits and tabaco. Dry but not astringent tannins. Will cap off and try again tomorrow but wanted to post first impression. First impression is 88 points but with QPR, could go a bit lower to 86.

Day 2: better. Still a simple fruit bomb but a subtle dark fruit flavor finish is showing that I didn't get before. Perhaps this needs more time, perhaps just needs more air than I gave it yesterday. Final score is solid 89 including QPR. (1809 views)

California Wines (Wine Institute of California)

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in over 100 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
