Community Tasting Notes (average 91.7 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 136 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Dr. Bee on 9/30/2023 & rated 93 points: Broken cork with decanter save at restaurant. Served with mushroom short ribs. At its peak and a quick ride. Drink now if u can. (635 views)
Tasted by ThomasB99 on 3/1/2022 & rated 93 points: PnP. This is in a really good spot. Quite lovely. Old school Napa, less cherry extraction and more tannin, more character, more of what "estate napa cab" should be. Medium body and really just nicely balanced overall. Don't hold. Drink now. (2162 views)
Tasted by DRaber on 1/2/2022: Tasted better after open for a few hours (2036 views)
Tasted by Bodyfxr on 6/18/2021 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 45 minutes and over the course of eating charcuterie. Deep purple hue. A nose of dark jammy fruit and some florals. Well balanced, mildly fruit forward but not too interesting. On its own it has some depth and is well integrated making it pretty enjoyable however I had this wine first in a line up of 2013's which included Hewitt, Del Dotto and Quintessa giving it a more significant perspective. This came in at the bottom of the bunch. Drink up as I don't see this getting any better. (2539 views)
Tasted by wine4lux on 11/19/2020 & rated 92 points: Very dark and rich. First few sips were an explosion of currant and berries with a long finish. With a little air time, the fruit became darker and some tobacco and cedar notes opened up. In a great spot now. Some of the pro reviews dissed on being rough and abrasive. If this wine had those rough edges early, I think they are long gone. (3261 views)
Tasted by Mneumeier on 11/14/2020 & rated 91 points: Tasting good. Will last. (2701 views)
Tasted by millerarner on 7/20/2020 & rated 94 points: The nose was somewhat reticent, and it wanted for a little more complexity, but an ultra plush mouthfeel, that maintained good structure, was nice compensation for those nit picks. (2038 views)
Tasted by Steven DiFiore on 4/19/2020 & rated 93 points: Excellent, big, old world Cabernet. (2042 views)
Tasted by jschnabel on 3/22/2020 & rated 91 points: It needs a patience to decant for about 3 hours. Dusty fruit of Oakville comes through with some hint of magnolia. Tannins are very soft and the mouth feel is luxurious. It is not very complex and gives an initial burst of plum pie but then disappears with a shorter finish than I would expect. Overall not the best year for this vineyard, but a worthy quaff! (1785 views)
Tasted by KlinkandKlank on 3/15/2020 & rated 90 points: Upon opening the bottle, nose was excellent. Nice mouth feel. Nice full bodied cab flavor you’d expect from an Oakville Cab. No specific taste jumped out at us besides a subtle earthy tobacco. Not a fruity/jammy wine, by any means.
After decanting for 2 hours, opened up a bit. So yummy but I wish I could hold off/suggest decanting 3 or more hours. Very solid wine, but nothing super exciting to put it over the top. (1184 views)
Tasted by Bodyfxr on 12/31/2019 & rated 87 points: Decanted for an hour. This started out pretty unimpressive. But with time improved. Not sure if this wine is in a "stupid phase" at its ten year mark because these wines ate typically singing at this point. Based upon that thought, I'm perplexed whether this will improve with more time. Initially...very weak on the nose and the palate in fruit, body and all other characteristics. If you choose to delve into one of these...be sure to give it a long decant, >3hrs. It got better later in the night, especially with some gumbo. Hence my score. Overall, and especially taking price I to consideration...this was a big disappointment. Drink or hold??? (1522 views)
Tasted by Steven DiFiore on 4/24/2019 & rated 94 points: Excellent, well balanced, beautiful Cabernet. (2166 views)
Tasted by AAJR on 3/30/2019 & rated 91 points: Decanted & consumed over 2 hours. Nose - berry & floral aromas. Flavors of berries with dusty tannins on the finish. (1802 views)
Tasted by Damon2016 on 12/2/2018: Gave to David for hannukah (2241 views)
Tasted by East of Napa on 11/21/2018 & rated 88 points: Not impressive. Did not hold character from 09 to 2018. Not a worthwhile purchase. (2200 views)
Tasted by rm97 on 9/2/2018 & rated 92 points: Good not great
Lacking secondary flavors and length
May need more time in cellar and a longer time with decant (2291 views)
Tasted by sonodoc on 6/2/2018 & rated 93 points: Not much to add to my note from last year. This is aging very nicely; very smooth and enjoyable. (2171 views)
Tasted by Sabishop on 12/31/2017 & rated 91 points: Great bottle. Decanted for 2 hours. Great New Years Eve bottle. (2667 views)
Tasted by Dustonthebottle on 12/31/2017 & rated 92 points: Notes of vanilla and pepper on the nose. Decanted for an hour +. Significant pepper and heat on the initial taste with red fruit on the back end. Have two more bottles. Excited to taste in a couple years. This should improve with time. (2011 views)
Tasted by fritza on 12/24/2017 & rated 92 points: Ready to drink
Enjoyed with prime rib (2118 views)
Tasted by wine4lux on 12/12/2017 & rated 92 points: Served at holiday party, was able to savor one glass; drinking very well now; great impact at the party. (1818 views)
Tasted by lauriewilliams on 12/2/2017: Added to many bottles this should be a void. (1863 views)
Tasted by sonodoc on 4/30/2017 & rated 92 points: Red and black fruit, with a little leather, tobacco, and oak. Smooth. Easy drinking. (2654 views)
Tasted by LONGDIVISION on 9/3/2016 & rated 92 points: Surprisingly really good. Have had some FN Cabs in the past that have always seemed shut down. This was open for about for hours and drank great. (3648 views)
Tasted by RayOB on 6/22/2016 & rated 92 points: Drank at Goodmans
Rich complex nose with a silky smooth palate. Lovely (3801 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

Estate

In the United States, "Wines with “estate bottled” designations must: a) also designate an appellation of origin or an AVA, and both the vineyards and the winery must be located there; b) the grapes must come from vineyards owned or controlled by the winery; and c) the wine must have been produced, from crush to bottle, in a continuous process without leaving the winery’s premises."

- WINE LABEL FAQS: A QUICK SUMMARY OF LABEL DESIGNATION RULES" by David E. Stoll

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
