Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.6 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 48 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by SWHighlander on 2/5/2019 & rated 90 points: This was a fantastic low end Pfalz riesling in its first few years. Now out of its drinking window, and predictably past its prime. Great nose. Great minerality, but the acidity has all faded. Still drinkable, but out of balance, flat. (960 views)
Tasted by SWHighlander on 5/24/2017 & rated 90 points: Golden color -- surprisingly dark for a dry Ortsweine (low end wines for a German vineyard). Completely dry in taste, quite a bit complexity again for non-GG wine. Drinks well by itself. Citrus notes, acidity is a touch muted -- not exactly bright or "refreshing acidity" as many Pfalz rieslings are. No US importer. (1766 views)
Tasted by FjordogFjell on 11/14/2015 & rated 85 points: Knallfrisk og fruktig skifer lukt (539 views)
Tasted by honest bob on 10/17/2014 & rated 88 points: From 75cl, perfect cork. Exactly as previously noted on 24.09.2014. 88P (3208 views)
Tasted by honest bob on 9/24/2014 & rated 88 points: From 75cl, good cork. My TN of 09.06.2014 is analytically accurate enough, but quite beside the point. Which is: Anyone who still thinks that Riesling is a light, girly kind of wine (for drinking on summer picnics to accompany cucumber sandwiches with the vicar, perhaps) should steer well clear of this muscular thug of a heavyweight rude-boy Pfalzer. "In your face" doesn't even come close, this has real testosterone energy and serious attitude. Think Madness or The Clash, at least. Fantastic stuff. 88P (3278 views)
Tasted by honest bob on 6/9/2014 & rated 89 points: From 75cl, excellent cork. This is in a different league to my previous bottle, which must have been slightly flawed, and is even better on the second day. Subdued but very clean, appetising citrus and green apple scent; nice tropical fruit crescendo onto the mid-palate, but otherwise the gentle ripe citrus theme persists; prickling acidity, impressively tense stony-mineral backbone on the finish. Very good indeed. 89(-90)P (3238 views)
Tasted by honest bob on 3/24/2014 & rated 86 points: From 75cl, excellent cork. Very concentrated but rather generic Pfalz Riesling. Heavy and rather over-ripe with slight hints of the voilatile off-notes which Riesling from less than stellar Pfalz/Rheinhessen terroir can carry (were this a southern French red, it might be one of those wines which smell of dustbin juice on a hot day). Tropical multi-vitamin fruit juice with added ginger and lemon. OK but not great value at 10 EUR/75cl, and a disappointment compared to my memory of the (more poised) 2009 at a similar age. 85-86P (3110 views)
Tasted by henrygjeffreys on 9/29/2013: n - milky, spicy

Tasted by jorgen.hosoy@gmail.com on 6/30/2013 & rated 89 points: same as notet 12/16/2012 (2753 views)
Tasted by Nordin on 6/6/2013 & rated 89 points: Still young but a very easy drinking village riesling. A nice blend of citrus and tropical fruits with some minerality, even better on day 3. 89-90. (2550 views)
Tasted by diggydan on 6/5/2013 & rated 90 points: Nice light wine with a good nose. 20 euros off the list at Taku, Cologne, for a 1/2 bottle. (1053 views)
Tasted by ove_stammrud on 4/26/2013 & rated 88 points: Sitrus dufter med svale innslag av aparges og ananas. God og fast munnfølelse. Noe lukket på duft. Takk. (1227 views)
Tasted by CWang on 4/16/2013 & rated 91 points: Served chilled; floral, fruity, and sweet in the nose; crispy, fruity, juicy, and refreshing on the palate; the finish, long and pleasant with sugarcane and tropical fruits; a lovely and vivid young riesling; good QPR; 91-92 for now; will be a very nice hot summer treat. (16541 views)
Tasted by FjordogFjell on 2/25/2013 & rated 86 points: Flott mineralsk lukt, ok fylde, rein fin ettersmak. 164 NOK (270 views)
Tasted by AlexGarner on 2/2/2013 & rated 89 points: German Riesling, By Farr and Burgundy tasting (Prince Wine Store - Bank Street): A nose of citrus, apple and peach encompassed in a bouquet of crisp minerals and a spritzy, bright palette with fresh juiciness. (3250 views)
Tasted by chatters on 1/23/2013: Langton's Burklin Wolf tasting (26 Waterloo Street, Surry Hills, Sydney): pale lemon with slight spritz in the glass. Aromas of wet stone, slight creaminess, ripe apple and hints of stone fruit - peach - with some slight lime notes. In the mouth the wine is well structured with medium plus acid, mineral notes over lime and green apple. Okay. (2916 views)
Tasted by SWHighlander on 1/12/2013 & rated 91 points: A cuvee made the grapes of several unclassified plots in their Wachenheim and Ruppertsberg vineyards. It's a light Riesling with a young freshness, surprisingly well balanced for an Ortsweine. It was my favorite Riesling in their entire 2011 collection except for the "G.C." wines, although that's partially because a light Riesling is going to be ready to be drunk younger than a full bodied, complex one -- and is made that way.  Tasted by jorgen.hosoy@gmail.com on 12/16/2012 & rated 87 points: Nice acid and cool fruits, a bargain for the price. (2384 views)
Tasted by .M. on 11/17/2012 & rated 89 points: Epler, fersken, Stein og hylleblomst. Sødmefull og mineralsk nese. I munnen konsentrert, med god syre og sødmebalanse, lang avslutning i Stein og blomster, synger virkelig i magnumversjon. (2081 views)
Tasted by woodap on 9/29/2012 & rated 88 points: Apple crumble on the nose. Crisp apple on the palate with refreshing acidity. Bone dry. Medium length. Beautiful now, though I expect will become more complex over a few years. (1400 views)
Tasted by guitarkim on 9/28/2012 & rated 89 points: App: straw yellow
Aroma: lemon, minerals, tropic fruit
Medium-bodied+ with very good acidity and balanced sweetness (just a touch...)
Very good length.

Nice! (2101 views)
Tasted by Finare Vinare on 6/14/2012 & rated 90 points: Young fruity nose with notes of honeydew melons, mandarines, grapefruit, metals and minerals. Gulpable juicy taste with ripe fruit & friendly acidity, just a hint of spritz, bicarbonate minerals and great staying power on the palate. This dry village riesling is so harmonious - actually wickedly good - and over-delivers considering price and appellation level, year after year! Serve it chilled on a hot summer day and prepare to swoon. Pure drinking pleasure at a low cost: €11 by DHL from Stefan Dorst's "Weinhandlung am Kleinen Platz" in Landau. 149 sek in the swedish monopoly order sortiment. (2710 views)
Tasted by -E- on 5/10/2012 & rated 89 points: Mild nese av hvite blomster med et lett preg av lime. Delikat og saftig frukt med en spenstig syrestrek. Lett sødme. Flott balansert. Gir mer etter litt lufting. 89-90 P (2187 views)
Tasted by stiang on 5/6/2012 & rated 87 points: Enkel, grei og god. (2231 views)
Tasted by gukarl on 4/5/2012: - Light gold color. Angular texture with a long finish. (1994 views)

About Dr Bürklin-Wolf

The Bürklin-Wolf estate is based in the Mittelhaardt, the quality core of Germany’s world-renowned Pfalz, around the towns of Wachenheim, Forst, Deidesheim and Ruppertsberg. Here with 85ha under vine they have the largest family owned wine estate in all of Germany originating in 1597, with a treasure-trove of superb vineyards, at the centre of which lies the great Kirchenstück. Here in the tiny village of Forst, Kirchenstück and its neighbours Jesuitengarten, Ungeheuer and Pechstein, have for centuries been recognised as producing not only some of the world’s greatest dry Rieslings, but simply some of the world’s greatest wines. In the nineteenth century, prices for these wines exceeded the prices paid for 1st Growth Bordeaux and Grand Cru Burgundy.'

In 1990 Bürklin-Wolf began reviewing their vineyard holdings in the context of the 1828 Royal Bavarian Land Tax Classification and after years of exhaustive research they discovered that today’s top vineyards are substantially the same as those identified back in 1828. Today they have adopted a Burgundian model with four tiers: Estate, Village, PC (code for Premier Cru) and GC (for Grand Cru). They are focussed on dry, terroir-driven wines and no longer routinely produce the Kabinett and Spätlese styles defined by the (still current) 1971 German Wine Law.

Hand harvest and whole-bunch pressing with oxidative handling of the juices into mostly large old foudre for fermentation with indigenous yeast on fine lees for nearly 6 months for the entry level and village wines and 12 months for PC wines and up to 18 months for GC wines.

#2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)
