Tasted by cct on 2/3/2023 & rated 93 points: Lunch at Marta, NYC

From magnum. Leftovers from a bottle opened the night before.

A pretty classic nose with rare meat, black olive, violets, dark fruits, and tar. Mid weighted and savory more than fruit driven on the palate. It's a very well balanced and honest syrah. It's a little rough around the edges, but this is 1990s era Cornas and I kind of dig it. 93 (1208 views)
Tasted by adnorthup on 9/29/2022: Dinner at Noble Rot Soho (Noble Rot, Soho, London): so much olive and bacon fat on the nose. Beautiful red fruit, a small bit of acid, a little funk on the finish that blows off in 10 minutes. Not the best bottle of aged Cornas, but fun to try. (1417 views)
Tasted by Radders12345 on 4/12/2022: BTG at Noble Rot - Lambs Conduit Street

Nose of leather, dried cherry, prune, black pepper
Palate is a little bit thin and acidic though the aromas are there but in the background. Maybe this bottle has been tapped a little too much. (1550 views)
Tasted by Nicephoras on 2/16/2020: In great shape for supposedly an off vintage. Tannins are mostly resolved, but the olive notes on the nose and the olive tapenade on the palate are massive. This is a rustic wine in the best way, drinking very well right now. (2632 views)
Tasted by acyso on 10/17/2019 & rated 95 points: Dinner at Pizzeria Bebu (Chicago, IL): By far the best bottle of this wine I've had (and three from the same lot). The nose on this is pure olive brine, with some of that wild feral quality that makes Cornas Cornas. The palate is light and delicate, but not simple. A very large component of the flavour profile here is smoky and briny, but there's an undercurrent of black fruit still. Fully resolved and at the tail end of the peak. (3694 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 7/27/2019 & rated 94 points: Some barnyard on the nose. A bit past prime time. still interesting. fruit waning. Drink up. (2211 views)
Tasted by acyso on 6/10/2019 flawed bottle: Case of the Clape (Chicago, IL): Corked. (3279 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 3/19/2019: Revenge of the Cornas (Michaeangelo Hotel): From a magnum. This was good. Would say fell between the '97 and the '89 (the later of which really was just rocking). Touch more elegant than the '97. Starting to bring some more of the leather notes. You can tell there is some age on this wine (one of the few in the tasting where that was true). Black fruits still going strong though. (2530 views)
Tasted by acyso on 3/10/2019 & rated 93 points: Rhone, lots of it (Chicago, IL): From magnum. Better than the fifth of this I had recently. This is much fresher and shows a lot more red fruit. The nose shows more blood and dust than my previous experience. Still, the lightness of the vintage shows on the palate, but that's not a complaint, at least for me. (2622 views)
Tasted by acyso on 1/23/2019 & rated 93 points: Eclectica at Table, Donkey and Stick (Chicago, IL): To be sure, this is on its last legs. The nose has a fair bit of brett, but also some classic feral syrah elements. Some pepper, some animale, some black fruit still. The palate is thin and there's mostly acid left. Needs food to balance out these rough edges -- a smoked pinkelwurst did a great job on that front. (2384 views)
Tasted by cfk49 on 12/17/2017 & rated 91 points: Drunk from magnum, cellared since original release. Ravishing nose of spiced dark plums. Dark plums on the palate, too, along with an acidic streak that wasn't great for drinking on its own but good with the food. Less advanced and delicate than magnum drunk 1-1/2 years ago. Lot 2 L1. (1951 views)
Tasted by cfk49 on 4/4/2016 & rated 90 points: From magnum, cellared since original release, Lot 2LI (sic). Becoming delicate in structure, but still with intense violets in nose and mouth. Not a great Clape Cornas, but still one that provides good pleasure. (2989 views)
Tasted by Hodby on 6/6/2013 & rated 88 points: Medium garnet-red color. Aroma initially vaguely earthy, meaty with gentle garrigue, opening over several hours to be replaced with more obvious smoked pork, menthol, baked cherry tart, dusty leather-bound books. On entry, balance tilts very much to higher than typical acid, moderate tannin. Gets better and better with air, adding fat and depth. The anti-fruit bomb, provided from my brother's very cold locker. (5145 views)
Tasted by Dokken on 11/23/2012 & rated 85 points: Bland but opening with time. Still not much on the nose. Loose on palate missing concentration of fruit with only acidity present. Elegant but underperforming. (5514 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 11/22/2012 & rated 84 points: Of the four Clape Cornas we had last night with friends Yiannis, Whitesnake and Grigoris two were corked and brett infected, yet strangely - at least for me - likeable, and one the 1990 very good. 1994 was neither corked nor brett infected in any off-putting way and still it was the wine I liked the least, despite some concentration of ripe dark fruit, especially on the nose. Reason was mainly a rancidness on both nose and mouth reminiscent of stale sugarplum. Additionally palate was sour with prominent acidity and with fruit not being able to add much flesh. (5070 views)
Tasted by Yiannis on 11/22/2012 & rated 82 points: Garnet-brick and slightly muddy. Clean but very restrained nose with tart red cherris and herbal scents. Medium to light body, with firm tannins, fading fruit, high acidity and a short to medium aftertaste. Cleaner than the rest but disappointing. (5609 views)
Tasted by Barry Rothof on 11/17/2012 & rated 89 points: A. Clape Cornas tasting & d'Auvenay, PYCM, Selosse, Rieussec .... (Netherlands): The summer was hot and dry, with some welcome rain in early September. Nice nose showing a hint of herbs and fresh mint. Moderate acidity with tannins that were evident yet not overbearing.
Medium depth and structure, dark fruit and leather flavors and fairly light medium finish. (3311 views)
Tasted by Burgaddict on 11/17/2012 & rated 87 points: Leiden Clape Cornas tasting November 2012 (Leiden, The Netherlands): Nose rustic, still a lot of fruit, mushroom, medium bodied, tannins have mellowed. Acidity is allmost completely gone, making the wine taste tired and old, because there is hardly anything left in the backbone. (4665 views)
Tasted by mdavis on 9/6/2012: On the downhill, but drinking well and still enjoyable. (2781 views)
Tasted by chcook on 12/22/2011 & rated 88 points: From memory. Popped and decanted. Cork crumbly but wine intact. Color ruby with bricking. Nose mature syrah. I had one many years ago and it was tannic and harsh. Tis time the tannins and acid are resolved and this is polished. Will drink my last one soon. (2878 views)
Tasted by ggormezano on 8/26/2011 & rated 93 points: Drinking beautifully, but needs to be consummed in next 2-3 years (2916 views)
 Tasted by Weston3220 on 5/29/2011 & rated 96 points: C: Med+ Ruby, Slightly Garnet
A: Med+ Intensity, Developed
Meaty, ROCKS!, Dried red fruit, spice, beautiful harmonious
T: Dry,high acid, med+ intensity, long finish
Red fruit, more rocks, spice

Conc: this wine is amazing, showing beautifully, together, harmonious, thanks to Michael Madrigale Sommelier of Bar Boulud for brining this out (3626 views)
Tasted by Hodby on 11/12/2010 & rated 89 points: Medium red, no bricking. Bacon, leather, dark cherry and garrigue in the nose; opens in two hours to feature the fruit and minty garrigue more. Tilted to the high-toned acids, with soft tannin. Moderately interesting flavors, maybe a little tired, musky fruit. Tangy finish, a bit sharp initially, but long.Better bottle than this summer. From magnum, bottle #1 of one. (3310 views)
Tasted by french16 on 8/16/2010: Initially thought it was corked but it eventually blew off.
A little tired, more than I was expecting, this was a rustic Cornas but showing interesting violets and dark fruits. High acidity, the structure was lacking a little bit.
I'd like to try another bottle to check. (3311 views)
Tasted by Hodby on 8/4/2010 & rated 88 points: Medium red. Initially subdued nose of garrigue, leather and cherry, expanding over four hours to accent violets, rosemary and many mints. Somewhat plaintive acids and high toned tannin. Flavors subtle of cranberry, mint, mushroom. Finish is all front of the mouth, tangy as in what I've come to accept as a somewhat over-cropped, over-filtered wine. It works today with raita, chickpeas with red peppercorn, tomato and olives, saag with homemade cheese. Retirement is a lovely thing when lunch at home, on the terrace, with wine like this, is possible on a mild S Cal Summer day. Bottle #6 of six. (3276 views)

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.
